4 out of 5 stars The "Countess" of Basic Writing.......2001-11-20

Beginning with Shaughnessy's childhood, Maher opens her story with how the family life of an immigrant miner's daughter tempered her spirit. Maher thoroughly documents the career of a pioneer in the field of basic writing. Maher's treatment was detailed and compassionate, revealing struggles rarely seen except by close companions.

Through the use of excerpts from Shaughnessy's own letters and journal, the reader is treated to the momentary and well-earned celebrations and the constant, almost overwhelming struggle of her daily fight. It is inspiring and at the same time disheartening. One individual changed so much by her sheer will and determination. However, some of the elitist inhabitants of the ivory tower still lord over those who were not so fortunate in their early education.

This book is an excellent place for new teachers to begin their education in teaching.

    Book Description

When it comes to passing the puck and reacting to hockey's fast pace, Paul Kariya has only one peer--Wayne Gretzky. And, wherever this Anaheim Mighty Ducks' left-winger plays, he astonishes competitors and teammates alike with his talent. Using dramatic color photography and an exciting text just right for 8 to 10 year olds, here is the fascinating story of Kariya's many successes. He was elected most valuable junior player in Canada; won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as best player in US college hockey; helped power the Canadian team to a silver medal in the Olympics and a gold in the World Championships; and has twice topped 100 points in a season. A homage to a true ambassador of the game.

Pufnstuf, Witchiepoo, Bugaloo, Hoo Doo--nonsense words to all but the initiated. And who are the initiated? Let's just say they're adults of a certain age who may harbor a secret nostalgia for a... land of living hats. Lidsville, that is, a "groove, groove, grooviest" place where everyone has flipped their lid and hats have come alive. Such was the wacky world that television impresarios Sid and Marty Krofft unleashed on a generation of schoolchildren in the early to mid 1970s. Likely there is many a corporate executive today who, under times of stress, may be heard to hum a little jingle to themselves: "H.R. Pufnstuff / Who's your friend when things get rough? / H.R. Pufnstuff / Can't do a little 'cuz he can't do enough!"

H.R. Pufnstuf, Lidsville, The Bugaloos, Land of the Lost, Far Out Space Nuts, and several others were Saturday morning television shows for children. All were colorfully populated by recognizable humans as well as actors in elaborate makeup, costumed fantasy characters, and outlandish puppets. Pufnstuf & Other Stuff takes a fond look back at these shows and evening programs, such as the Donny & Marie show, that also emerged from the prolific Krofft studios. Author David Martindale, who fits squarely into the age-group demographic for Krofft devotees, answers such potent questions as "Was Pufnstuf filled with double-entendre and punning drug references, even in the show's title, H.R. Pufnstuf?" (You'll have to read the book to find out.) Nostalgic grownups are the obvious audience for this book, but television and social historians will enjoy it, too. --Brenda Pittsley

4 out of 5 stars a blast from the past.......2006-01-29

For nostalgia's sake alone, this book is worth it. I loved looking at the pictures and reading the names from my favorite shows as I was growing up. These shows were great (at least in my memory). They were not the super-high tech shows of today, but they were fairly advanced in their own way.
As usual, I would have liked a bit more of the stuff behind the scenes, but maybe it is better this way. The shows were simple. Certainly the sets and costumes were simple. Perhaps it is better that the book be simple, too. Why ruin a great thing?

5 out of 5 stars A trippy trip down memory lane.......2005-12-18

I loved this book! I was amazed at how many Krofft stars and guest stars the author tracked down. Filled with fun facts, song lyrics, episode descriptions, and tons of backstage anecdotes, it helped me relive many great childhood memories. Highly recommended for anyone who came of age in the 1970s.

3 out of 5 stars Great little insights, author sounds like a jerk.......2002-11-19

I haven't finished reading it yet, but so far it's a good little coffee table book. Why I think the author sounds like a jerk: when he describes the Bugaloos, he says she's pretty and the blonde and brunette ones are handsome. What does he say about the the only Bugaloo you can tell what he is supposed to BEE? That he was black and that it's obvious by his brown and yellow stripes, he must be a bee. It was very disappointing for he deserved to be described as handsome too. So, if you can get by Martindale's biased descriptions, then you'll enjoy the non-descriminating facts.

        2 out of 5 stars Tough sledding.......2002-08-16

Missed opportunity. Filled with restatements, self-serving quotes, warm and fuzzy verbiage, etc. Could have been condensed down to a 75 page book by a sharp editor.

        5 out of 5 stars Trippy television ... a trippy book.......2000-05-09

What I enjoyed most about this book: It was a fun and breezy -- yet informative -- read about a genre of television I had kind of forgotten about, yet the book vividly brought the shows all back to me. Then there were some great behind-the-scenes things, like the Kroffts' positions today on whether the apparent drug-culture references in the shows (even in pun titles like "H.R. Pufnstuf" and "Lidsville") were really intended to be interpreted that way. I recommend it to any Saturday morning/Krofft fan.

4 out of 5 stars The Fellowship Sourcebook.......2005-08-21

This book mostly outlines the timeline of both Peter Jacksons' films and the trilogy from J.R.R. Tolkien, and spells it all out in plain english. There's also a lot of good information on *each* of the major characters from the books and film, and the differences between each. In the "Places" chapter it outlines major places of note, and gives some maps and adventure hooks as well. All in all I am very happy with it; but it *is* just a sourcebook, it doesn't have much actual DM stuff in it for the game. Just a good reference book.

“This comprehensive analysis of privacy in the information age challenges traditional assumptions that breeches of privacy through the development of electronic dossiers involve the invasion of one's private space.”
        —Choice

" The Digital Person challenges the existing ways in which law and legal theory approach the social, political, and legal implications of the collection and use of personal information in computer databases. Solove's book is ambitious, and represents the most important publications in the field of information privacy law for some years."
        —Georgetown Law Journal

"Anyone concerned with preserving privacy against technology's growing intrusiveness will find this book enlightening."
        —Publishers Weekly

"Solove . . . truly understands the intersection of law and technology. This book is a fascinating journey into the almost surreal ways personal information is hoarded, used, and abused in the digital age."
        —The Wall Street Journal

"Daniel Solove is one of the most energetic and creative scholars writing about privacy today. The Digital Person is an important contribution to the privacy debate, and Solove's discussion of the harms of what he calls 'digital dossiers' is invaluable."
—Jeffrey Rosen, author of The Unwanted Gaze and The Naked Crowd

        "Powerful theme."
        —Privacy Journal

"This is not only a book you should read, but you should make sure your friends read it."
        —IEEE Review

"Solove offers a book that is both comprehensive and easy to understand, discussing the changes that technology has brought to our concept of privacy. An excellent starting point for much needed discussion."
        —Law Technology News

"An unusually perceptive discussion of one of the most vexing problems of the digital age—our loss of control over our personal information. It's a fascinating journey into the almost surreal ways personal information is hoarded, used, and abused in the digital age. I recommend his book highly."
        —Bruce Schneier

"Solove's book is the best exposition thus far about the threat that computer databases containing personal data about millions of Americans poses for information privacy."
—Pamela Samuelson, Chancellor's Professor of Law and Information Management at the University of California, Berkeley

"Solove drives his points home through considerable reconfiguration of the basic argument. Rather than casting blame or urging retreat to a precomputer database era, the solution is seen in informing individuals, challenging data collectors, and bringing the law up-to-date."
        —Choice

"If you want to find out what a mess the law of privacy is, how it got that way, and whether there is hope for the future, then read this book."
        —Legal Times

        —DM News

"Solove's treatment of this particular facet is thoughtful, thorough, concise, and occasionally laced with humor. The present volume gives us reason to look forward to his future contributions."
—The Law and Politics Book Review

"Solove's book is useful, particularly as an overview on how these private and government databases grew in sophistication and now interact with one another."
        —Christian Science Monitor

"A far-reaching examination of how digital dossiers are shaping our lives. Daniel Solove has persuasively reconceptualized privacy for the digital age. A must-read."
        —Paul Schwartz, Brooklyn Law School

" The Digital Person is a detailed and approachable resource on privacy issues and the laws that affect them."
        —IT Conversations

Seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, electronic databases are compiling information about you. As you surf the Internet, an unprecedented amount of your personal information is being recorded and preserved forever in the digital minds of computers. For each individual, these databases create a profile of activities, interests, and preferences used to investigate backgrounds, check credit, market products, and make a wide variety of decisions affecting our lives. The creation and use of these databases—which Daniel J. Solove calls "digital dossiers"—has thus far gone largely unchecked. In this startling account of new technologies for gathering and using personal data, Solove explains why digital dossiers pose a grave threat to our privacy.

The Digital Person sets forth a new understanding of what privacy is, one that is appropriate for the new challenges of the Information Age. Solove recommends how the law can be reformed to simultaneously protect our privacy and allow us to enjoy the benefits of our increasingly digital world.

3 out of 5 stars The Digital Person.......2007-05-02

I think this book address the rising problem of privacy in the Information Age very well. Discussing the history of databases and the privacy laws are helpful, but I think the author goes too much into that. I was hoping the book would discuss more about how privacy problems could be in the future and how to deal with them effectively.

4 out of 5 stars taken from Journal of Law, Economics & Policy Volume 1, Number 2 (Winter 2005).......2006-08-17

"The knowledge which can be gained from the study of this text is found in the placement that Solove's topic has within the broader debate surrounding the role of knowledge in society. Solove's points chime in right around the time we recognize that computers have great potential for advancing the spread and use of productive information. Computers provide tools capable of tapping into dispersed knowledge; but, we must simultaneously recognize that they are not miracle cures to be implemented from central positions of authority. The knowledge which they coordinate is valuable only in so far that it is dispersed and subjective. The hazardous notions of knowledge, in the Hayekian sense, would be those which claim to be more complete and universally applicable than they actually are. When based upon such false notions, actions stand to be erroneous, misinformed, and the host to unintended consequences."

There are some great reviews below, so I will not repeat them. Amazon is getting to the point now where it is almost essential to read all of the reviews as a pre-cursor to buying and reading the book.

This book was instrumental, after I bought it, in pointing me to the preceding work by David Brin, "The Transparent Society," and I found it useful to read that book first.

The two key points in this book that make it a notable contribution are:

        1. Best available review of applicable laws; and

        2. Superb expansive discussion of privacy violation that emerge not just for deliberate abuse and invasion, but from "careless unconcerned bureaucracies" with little judgement or accountability.

IDEA for Amazon: connect with the Institute of Scientific Information, and start showing us new books that cite existing books. I would love to be able to "fast forward" from this book to the "best in class" books that cite this book so that I could buy the best most recent book (I buy and read in threes on most topics). Amazon has become a major intellectual force, and is my starting point for every issue (Google is for fast looks, Amazon is for deep looks; I hope that one day they merge with Wikipedia).

4 out of 5 stars "Purposely Not Taught Outside of Law School- its Big Money!".......2006-02-24

"The Digital Person: Technology & Privacy in the Information Age," Daniel Solove, NY, NYUniv. Press, 2004 ISBN: 0-8147-9846-2, HC, 228/283 (Notes 37 pg., Index 16 pg.), 9 1/4" x 6 1/8"

Assoc. Prof. of Law & author of "Information Privacy Law", Solove thoroughly covers the history, current status & provides some law recommendations for coping better with rapidly changing practices of information gathering, its useage & its intrusions into our privacy.

Historically traceable, perhaps, to 1st U.S. census asking 4 questions in 1790, & hundreds of queries by 1890 including those on disease, infirmities & wages, data sorting was processed by punch card readers (forerunner of IBM). The "New Deal" Social Security System of 1935 assigned 9-digit U.S. citizen identifier numbers (SSNs) & useage of SSNs popularized with computerization in 1960's by both private & governmental (city/state/federal) sectors but provoked early concerns on privacy invasions.

Noting 'information breeds information', data analysis & number crunching fostered creation of 'digital dossiers' on millions of citizens via accumulation/assemblage of 'bits of information' from private, public & governmental sources. The privacy invasion affects our freedom, diminishes our power & allows for abuses including identity theft, blacklisting, profiling, self-incrimination & serious data errors (the latter which may be impossible to exterpate). Databases, some 2000 at federal level, are valuable comodities bought, sold, & traded between the private, public & governmental sectors including DMV, SS, PE's credit-card issuers, banks, websites, employers, etc. for spying, credit checks, targeted marketing, & diverse legal/illegal purposes, etc. Several paradigms including "Big Brother" of "1984" are discussed in detail.

Solove discusses stealth data collections relative to the 1st, 4th & 5th Ammendments, providing ample case law citations & recommendations for reducing one's own vulnerability to identify theft, & he confides of perceived, needed changes in current laws. An important read (not overtly technical but perhaps wordy or repetitious in sections) about what appears purposely not taught ouside of law school. This week several states announced that video (CCTV) surveillance of all business will be mandated - with specific mention of City of Santa Monica amongst the first & some vague rumors that CCTV may be proposed for all dwellings.

            Book Description

Whether it is major political events like the Boston Tea Party (December 16), or incredible discoveries like that of Tutankhamun's tomb (November 26), every event in history happened-of course-on one of 365 days.

5 out of 5 stars Random Access History.......2005-09-21

For each day of the year, Marsh and Carrick offer one or two short essays and a brief list of other significant events that happened on that day. Each essay is well written and describes an important event (a birth or a death, a battle or the passage of a law) and then explains what flowed from or caused the event.

I've really enjoyed this book. Each morning over breakfast, I read the entries for the day and learn a little bit more about history. The subject changes constantly, so it's never boring, and I can always leap ahead to see what happened on my birthday, or my wife's birthday, or our anniversary or whatever.

Although there are several other works that are similar to "365," I think this one is the best of the bunch. Still, in case you want to have something similar on hand when you finish with "365," you might consider these entries, all of which are more lightweight than "365" (but still entertaining): Whitely, "On This Date . . ." (2002); Spinrad, Sprinrad, Miller & Brown, "On This Day in History" (1999); Miller & Brown, "More on This Day in History" (2002); Donaldson & Donaldson, "The Book of Days" (1979) (eccentric and quirky); and Patterson, "What Time of Day Was That: History by the Minute" (2001).

For a more encylopedic but less readable approach to the subject, try The History Channel's "Today in History: A Day by Day Review of World Events"--this book has a lot more entries than "365," but it lacks Marsh and Carrick's elegant essays.

On the whole, I highly recommend "365" as a thoroughly enjoyable way of boning up on history.

LeBeau presents how to broaden perspective on the place of Indians in Michigan history. The four lessons centered on eroding stereotypes, primary historical figures, treaties, and maps as related to historical realties have implications on Native Americans in all regions and even this group as a whole in the U. S. LeBeau's aim is not to overthrow the decades of Native American studies, but rather to amplify and complement these for a more refined understanding of the history of Native Americans and its interrelation with American history. The book has the design of a classroom/student workbook; which it is meant to be. LeBeau brings into the picture of Native American studies different sorts of resources, with innovative and enlightening ways to question and examine these. With a Native American heritage, LeBeau is a former director of the American Indian Studies Program at Michigan State U. and is still active in academia and writing. The workbook-like book with a CD is suitable for high school through college courses.

5 out of 5 stars Explores the role that the Chippewa, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, & the 12 federally recognized tribes played in state history.......2005-10-14

Illustrated with color photographs, Rethinking Michigan Indian History is a resource especially intended for Michigan classroom teachers, as it especially explores the role that the Chippewa, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, and the twelve federally recognized tribes of Michigan played in state history. Divided into four main lessons, "Defining Our Terms and Exploring Stereotypes", "Challenging the 'Great Man' Theory of History", "Indian Treaties and the U.S. Constitution", and "How Historical Maps Influence Thinking about Michigan's Indians", Rethinking Michigan Indian History advocates change in conventional thinking and teaching practices in a non-confrontational manner. An accompanying CD-ROM holds printable PDF file versions of the graphic resources, handouts, and colorful maps on the copy-ready pages. Very highly recommended.

                Book Description

Computers are incredible. They are one of the most important inventions of the 20th century, dramatically and irrevocably changing the way we live. That is the good news. The bad news is that there are still major limitations to computers, serious problems that not even the most powerful computers can solve. The consequences of such limitations can be serious. Too often these limits get overlooked, in the quest for bigger, better, and more powerful computers. In Computers Ltd., David Harel, best-selling author of Algorithmics, explains and illustrates one of the most fundamental, yet under-exposed facets of computers - their inherent limitations. Looking at the bad news that is proven, lasting and robust, discussing limitations that no amounts of hardware, software, talents or resources can overcome, the book presents a disturbing and provocative view of computing at the start of the 21st century. Along the way he shows just how far from perfect computers are, while shattering some of the many claims made for these machines. Though we may strive for bigger and better things in computing, we need to be realistic: computers are not omnipotent - far from it. Moreover, the problem is real and here to stay.

                4 out of 5 stars Easy introduction.......2004-09-21

The is a good introductory book into the limits of computation. The book introduces the major concepts and vocabulary in a very easy to understand way. However that is the limit to this book on limits. If you are looking for non-technical information, then this may well be the book for you.

If you are looking for proofs, answers to your homwork problems, or rigor, you will be disappointed. The author states many conjectures few have proofs. From the conjectures he uses easily understood arguments to make his points. The conjectors are in fact true, but you will have to look elsewhere to find proofs.

The reasons I gave 4 stars instead of 5 are twofold. Although the book is pretty good, the writing seems a bit quirky at times. I would have liked to have seen a bit more rigor. Although I can understand wanting the book to be as simple as possible, but many of the proofs are not very difficult and could have been included (for example the halting problem).

4 out of 5 stars A limited introduction to the limits of Computation.......2001-11-09

This another nice book from David Harel, the author of the delightful
'Algorithmics : the spirit of Computer Science', which introduces the
general reader to the limits of computation (and hence the limits of
                what computers can do).

Harel, who's a renowned figure in the field of Theoretical Computer Science,
has the ability to write and explain in a way that makes things seem
wonderfully clear, and indeed it is only such authors who can write good
                books for the general reader.

This small (240 pages) book is quite ambitious in its coverage of topics -
starting off with the notion of an algorithm, it goes on to discuss
Efficiency and correctness, Turing machines, Finite state machines,
                Decidability, Computability, Complexity, NP-completeness, Recursion,
Parallel algorithms, Probabilistic algorithms, and even touches upon
Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence !!

All this is done with almost no mathematics, at least hardly any beyond
high-school level. The reader is gently introduced to some of the most
celebrated problems of Computer Science, and he/she can get a feel of
the nature of this exciting and interesting field.

Throughout the book, the author keeps underscoring the fact that no matter
how far technology progresses, there'll always be problems that we can't
solve cheaply, or can't solve at all, or can't ever know whether they
can be solved or not (!!), ie he stresses that there are problems that
are 'beyond computers', which cannot be tamed by more and more processing
power or any other technological advancements.

This book covers pretty much the same range of topics as Harel's earlier
book, 'Algorithmics : the spirit of Computer Science', but in only half
the number of pages, and with a heavy emphasis on the 'limitations' of
computers, which actually are limitations of our knowledge rather than
                of the machines themselves.

How does it compare with the eariler book ? Well, it's more uptodate,
since it was published in 2000, whereas the other one was in 1992 -
so here you find buzzwords like 'Java', 'Dotcom', 'Quantum Computing',
etc, which you wouldn't find in the earlier book, but on the whole
i prefer the earlier one, since it had a little more detail, made you
think a little more, and even had exercises for those who were interested
                in probing further.

So all in all, if you want a light, breezy introduction to the basic ideas
of Theoretical Computer Science which doesn't demand too much concentration,
this is a good choice, but if you're willing to put in some time & effort
& enjoy puzzles & logical thinking, then you'll find Harel's other book,
'Algorithmics : the spirit of Computer Science' much more rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Popularization At Its Best.......2000-11-23

This book is a masterpiece! It can be read on many levels and should be a must for anyone who knows how to read and think. The layman will get a gripping and very accessible account of the limits of computing in particular, and the boundaries of knowledge in general. The professional will be able to see, in a nutshell, and explicitly, what he or she or it already knew, but did not really FEEL. But note that this book does not put down computers, but shows the intrinsic limitation of all knowledge. It should have been subtitled: `What EVEN computers can't do'.

                    Book Description

These timely essays describe how to rediscover a land where life can be lived and enjoyed to the fullest, free from the constant specter of pollution, overcrowding, and overdevelopment. Though focusing on California, the environment everywhere faces similar pressures. If solutions can be found for one region, perhaps there is hope for the rest of the country as well.

The contributions gathered here, written specifically for this volume by experts from across the state, examine the many and varied threats to the health and well-being of one of the nation's most striking landscapes and its inhabitants. California's Threatened Environment identifies realistic and workable suggestions for revitalizing the once Golden State - suggestions that can help to protect threatened environments across the United States.

"It would be difficult to imagine a better book for realistically acquainting oneself with the endangered natural state of the state." - San Francisco Chronicle
