Short, Quick and Biased.......2007-02-27
It is interesting to read a book about a modern political figure where it is completely obvious that the author(s) would never have voted for her in a million years. And yet you can tell that they have tried very hard to be "balanced". What you end up with is a book that relates the facts carefully but the use of adjectives leaves little question of the authors' opinion. The authors also tend to overstate the negatives so that contrary opinions held by small minorities are given equal weight to the prevailing wisdom with little indication. Occasionally they throw their act of impartiality out the window like when they name a chapter "Margaret Defends the Indefensible". That gave me a good laugh.
If you are looking for a SHORT (135 page) overview of Thatcher and her times this one isn't bad. Aside from the obvious bias, the book does suffer for its length. For example, several chapters focus on the "poll tax" and its roll in her downfall without ever actually explaining what this tax involved or why it was unpopular.
Overall it is was a quick and simple read; it gives the basic details and can serve as an aid to further reading. Other than that, it offers little.

Book Description
High Anxieties explores the history and ideological ramifications of the modern concept of addiction. Little more than a century old, the notions of "addict" as an identity and "addiction" as a disease of the will form part of the story of modernity. What is addiction? This collection of essays illuminates and refashions the term, delivering a complex and mature understanding of addiction.
Brodie and Redfield's introduction provides a roadmap for readers and situates the fascinating essays within a larger, interdisciplinary framework. Stacey Margolis and Timothy Melley's pieces grapple with the psychology of addiction. Cannon Schmitt and Marty Roth delve into the relationship between opium and the British Empire's campaign to control and stigmatize China. Robyn R. Warhol and Nicholas O. Warner examine accounts of alcohol abuse in texts as disparate as Victorian novels, Alcoholics Anonymous literature, and James Fenimore Cooper's fiction. Helen Keane scrutinizes smoking, and Maurizio Viano turns to the silver screen to trace how the representation of drugs in films has changed over time. Ann Weinstone and Marguerite Waller's essays on addiction and cyberspace cap this impressive anthology.

Get Another Book on Solaris.......2007-02-04
I cannot say I am very impressed with this book. Granted, maybe the title 'Boot Camp' should have been a give away, but you just don't walk away from this book knowing even enough to be dangerous. Maybe peel potatoes.
My reading of the book progressed something like this: I would work my way through the chapter, following the author every step of the way as best I could (given system differences), the procedure would not work, I would look up the correct way to do things on the internet, and the problem would be solved. And the information on the internet is FREE.
Where the book really fails is it does not cover topics in a way that would allow you to extrapolate from the situation covered in the book to another, similar situation that you may be having. Back to the internet.
The author also breaks a cardinal rule of system administration: he makes multiple changes at the same time. This leaves you, the reader, having to re-trace multiple steps to identify the problem when the procedure covered in the text fails on your particular system. Back to the internet.
The book does have a nice feature: it lists all the man pages and files you will be using at the beginning of the chapter. Not to say this helped me resolve many of the problems I had, but it is still a nice feature.
This leaves me to suggest you purchase another book on Solaris and you use the internet where you would have used this text.
Not very good book.......2006-04-13
I don't understand why the rating of this book is so good. To me it is not realistic. This is an avarage book. The book is missing details. There are lots of mistakes. It is not complete. I understand that to write the book on Solaris(Unix) and explain all the details of it, the book should be over 1000 pages. If the authors don't have such a patience and dedication they should not write the books. The should leave students to read documentation from Sun website or man pages. I don't have any book to recomend. The book is still good comparing to other books on Unix, which are terrible. But chapters are not finished.
The ONLY Solaris SA's Book Worth Having On Your Desk.......2006-01-24
There are lots of Solaris books on the market, most of which are horrible. This book is the only book that I've seen that covers the OS very completely in a very small page count. Subjects like RBAC, NIS, NFS, ACL's, and other topics that are typically confusing and lengthy reads are presented in this book in only a few short paragraphs but with absolute clarity. Other books talk about something, this book teaches you how it works and how to do it without all the pointless chatter.
Everything presented in this book applies to Solaris 10 as well, it simply lacks coverage of the wide range of new features such as SMF, Zones, DTrace, etc. But don't let that stop you from buying this book!
While the book might seem like a beginners only book, I find it invaluable as a Sr SA. Its extremely embarousing when someone asks you to do something with Solaris that you haven't done for a long time. A common example is working with Sendmail on Solaris... if you spend a lot of time using Postfix or other mail systems it can be a real pain to remember where Sun puts things and how to interact with the stock Sendmail in Solaris. This book has saved me from reading piles of man pages and pulling out full length O'Rielly books to simply remember some simple topic that I just haven't dealt with in a while.
Beginner or Expert, this the best Solaris book to have at arms reach. Period.
Best Solaris Administration Book.......2005-08-12
At last a book that is worth every cent!
A must have book for any Solaris Administrator, novice or expert.
You will not be dissapointed..
Extremely well written - 5 stars easily.......2004-11-30
High quality content! I knew it was going to be a great book just after finishing the 1st chapter. On a topic per topic comparison, they write much more clearly than any other Unix book out there. The chapter on "packages" alone was worth the price of the entire book. I haven't read a Unix book that explained this aspect as well as these guys. Hope to see more quality books to come from these guys.

Fantastic textbook.......2007-02-01
This textbook is not only written in a conversational tone which holds the reader's attention, but it brings in art, personalities of historical figures, and other tidbits to enhance a student's learning experience. The illustrations used are fantastic and can spur students to delve further into many subjects. History should be exciting as evidenced by this book!

Math is fun? It is in Ian Stewart's romp through a labyrinth of possibilities and logic. Although some of the delightful puzzles, problems and teasers will give your brain a workout, you will be glad you followed the path to the end. Stewart uses the maze metaphor (the book has an "entrance," "passages," and an "exit" rather than an introduction, chapters, and an end) to illustrate the mental journeys we take when solving everything from bar tricks to problems of artificial intelligence. Difficult points are illustrated with an imaginary journey and lots of fun games. Real-life examples of mathematical "magic" abound, including the trails of slime-molds and the dimples in golf balls. Great walk through the jungle of probability. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
Enter the magical maze of mathematics and explore the surprising passageways of a fantastical world where logic and imagination converge. For mathematics is a mazea maze in your heada maze of ideas, a maze of logic. And that maze in your mind is a powerful tool for understanding an even bigger mazethe one of cause and effect that we call "the universe." That is its special kind of magic. Real magic. Strange magic. Infinitely fascinating magic. Acclaimed author Ian Stewart leads you swiftly and humorously through the junctions, byways, and secret passages of the magical maze to reveal its beauty, surprise, and power. Along the way, he reveals the infinite possibilities that arise from what he calls "the two-way trade between the natural world and the human mind." If you've always loved mathematics, you will find endless delights in the twists and turns of The Magical Maze. If you've always hated mathematics, a trip through this marvelous book will do much to change your mind.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful introduction to recreational mathematics!.......2005-11-30
Other reviewers have criticized this book for its lack of detail and mathematical depth. Although that may be true for the experienced mathematician, this is an EXCELLENT introduction to the world of recreational mathematics. This book shows that math can be fun and useful and explains it in a way that anyone can understand. I often wondered, when I was younger, where logic tied in with math... I loved logic games and puzzles, things labeled as "math games" but I hated "math" -- arithmatic is totally lame. This book completely bridges the gap between logic games and mathematics and submerses the reader in a whole new, wonderful world. However, if you are already familiar with this world it may feel kind of like watching Seseme Street -- entertaining, but attempting to teach things you learned long ago. Either way it's an entertaining and educational (for the non-mathematician) romp in the frivolities of mathematics.
Entertaining but Not for people looking for the real math..........2000-07-27
Not enough in-depth detail but entertaining writing by Ian Stewart. Give good introduction to many field of maths....
suitable for students in grade 10-12 BUT NOT FOR ME.......1999-01-05
The content in this book is suitable only for beginners. If u think that u are quite familiar with recreational mathematic, this book is quite tedious and have no new topic.

Book Description
This collection of ethnographic and interpretive essays fundamentally alters the debate over indigenous land claims in Southeast Asia and beyond. Based on fieldwork conducted in Malaysia and Indonesia during the 1980s and 1990s, these studies explore new terrain at the intersection of environmental justice, nature conservation, cultural performance, and the politics of making and interpreting claims.
Calling for radical redefinitions of development and ownership and for new understandings of the translation of culture and rights in politically dangerous contexts—natural resource frontiers—this volume links social injustice and the degradation of Southeast Asian environments. Charles Zerner and his colleagues show how geographical areas once viewed as wild and undeveloped are actually cultural artifacts shaped by complex interactions with human societies. Drawing on richly varied sources of evidence and interpretation—from trance dances, court proceedings, tree planting patterns, marine and forest rituals, erotic poems, and codifications of customary law, Culture and the Question of Rights reveals the ironies, complexities, and histories of contemporary communities’ struggles to retain their gardens, forests, fishing territories, and graveyards. The contributors examine how these cultural activities work to both construct and to lay claim to nature. These essays open up new avenues for negotiating indigenous rights against a background of violence, proliferating markets, and global ideas of biodiversity and threatened habitat.
This collection will prove valuable to anthropologists, political geographers, ecologists, environmentalists, legal scholars, and those interested in indigenous rights.
Contributors. Jane Atkinson, Don Brenneis, Stephanie Fried, Nancy Peluso, Marina Roseman, Anna Tsing, Charles Zerner

Indonesia contains some of Asia's most biodiverse and threatened forests. The challenges result from both long-term management problems and the political, social, and economic turmoil of the past few years. The contributors to Which Way Forward? explore recent events in Indonesia, while focusing on what can be done differently to counter the destruction of forests due to asset-stripping, corruption, and the absence of government authority.
Contributors to the book include anthropologists, economists, foresters, geographers, human ecologists, and policy analysts. Their concerns include the effects of government policies on people living in forests, the impact of the economic crisis on small farmers, links between corporate debt and the forest sector, and the fires of the late 1990s. By analyzing the nation's dramatic circumstances, they hope to demonstrate how Indonesia as well as other developing countries might handle their challenges to protect biodiversity, meet human needs, and deal with political change. The book includes a foreword by Emil Salim, former Indonesian Minister of State for Population and the Environment and former president of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme.
"On economic and social justice grounds, as well as for biodiversity conservation and environmental management, this is a rare and extremely useful analysis of forestry issues, given growing domestic and international concern over the status of Indonesia's forests."-- Larry Fisher, Cornell University
"An original contribution to understanding the obstacles and opportunities for achieving forest policy reform in Indonesia and elsewhere."-- Paul K. Gellert, Cornell University
