An important book, but it lacks style, depth and cohesion........1999-10-01

After hearing a speech of Clarke's on the radio, I was looking forward to this book. Unfortunately, it let me down.

Clarke's writing lacks style - I frequently was wondering if I was reading a high school composition rather than a book by the great orator.

There is a complete lack of continuity and cohesion throughout the book. Topics change from paragraph to paragraph. One gets confused if he is writing about himself, his life, the people he has known or his unpublished books. Any given paragraph may include some or all of these in a rather haphazard manner.

In reading this, I especially hoped to sink my teeth into understanding more about Clarke, more about the Africana movement, more about the history of the African people. Instead, I got some anectdotal stories and superficial glimpses. There was no significant depth to the content of this book.

In spite of my disappointment with "My Life in Search of Africa," it is an important book to read. History has typically been approached from a European (white) perspective, and it is essential that we get beyond that approach, that we learn more of the rest of the world, and that we learn from and about the people enabling that knowledge.

Great Account of the Senior Tour.......2000-11-30

This is a great read from one of the players themselves at the time. So, he's no Trevino or Palmer. Frank was a solid player (11 regular Tour wins, I think) during his regular Tour years and has proven himself admirably behind the mike for years with ESPN. He's a stand-up guy who tells it like it is.

If you want to know what it's like inside the ropes with the over 50 Tour set, read this book. But start first with Pro, the first book Frank wrote in 1970 with Dick Schaap.

Our Moms weren't the only activists.......2000-01-15

Finally a book that dispels the "generation X" loser myth -- yes, there are people under thirty who have made a difference and will spend the rest of their lives doing so. This anthology, written by students, demonstrates and explains that the sexual revolution is not over, it is just maturing and dealing with today's issues and today's woman. Cheers to the editors and writers of this book. I hope that classrooms across the country will pick it up and teach the ongoing, ever evolving struggle of females to be the best, brightest and fearless people they can be.

I bought the book and love it! Its great for a novice or experienced crossword puzzle solver. Just have patience, and some quality reference books and you be occupied.

Hints From Will Shortz - Better Than Cheating!.......2003-12-18

This is a terrific introduction to New York Times crosswords.

The seventy-five daily crosswords here run the gamut of difficulty, beginning with the easiest and going all the way to the tough end-of-the-week puzzles. And for each crossword, there are a few asterisked clues with hints in the back of the book. These hints give us information that most of us had to figure out on our own the hard way, through trial and error (mostly error). For example, Shortz tells us that clues always agree in number and tense. Seems obvious now, but I didn't know that until I'd muscled through some puzzles. A question mark after a clue means a tricky (possibly punny) answer, NYTimes puzzles don't tell you if an answer consists of more than one word, well you get the idea.

Even though New York Times Crosswords to Boost Your Brainpower is an excellent intro to Shortz-era NYTimes puzzles, it is also a lot of fun for old-timers, too.

Great Stuff !!.......2005-11-30

I bought a BUNCH of these large print New York Times Crossword books for my Mom including this one. She was ardent about solving them and felt they helped her in maintaining her mental powers. I would have to agree on that. The large print really IS large and seemed too big to me at first but they were easier for her to savor and work on at her own pace. They also have puzzles you can subscribe to and receive through the mail. I was surprized and delighted during a visit to see that she and a friend worked on them together. They're a terrific resource for an aging parent and well worth the price for the stimulation !!

Coreldraw 12: The Official Guide.......2006-03-16

I selected this book after reading reviews on Amazon.com. I found the book an excellent supplement to the lynda.com training I purchased for the same program. It helped to fill in the gaps and expand upon the online training. I cannot compare it to the Coreldraw 12 unleashed cd since I have not viewed it, but I am pleased with my purchase. I enjoyed the book from start to end and that says a lot for a discriminating reader of technical publications. Because I use coreldraw 12 primarily to construct business cards, I do wish the book would have addressed color matching. However, there are other sources on this subject on the net. Enough said - great book!

Excellent resource for CorelDraw 12.......2006-03-01

This is an extremely comprehensive guide that is packed full of clear illustrations. I consider the volume to be very readable and useful for a range of users, i.e., users new to CorelDraw or intermediate level and above. No wonder they call it the "Only Authorized Reference on CorelDraw 12"!

bad paradigm.......2005-12-20

If you're looking for a book to get you up and running with CorelDraw 12, this ain't it. This book uses the "Start with the File Menu..." paradigm. The first several chapters are taken up with mind numbingly endless descriptions of menus and tools and options, how to save files (duh) and discussions of features, the function of which the novice user has no clue. You don't actually get to draw anything until way into the second section of the book. (Note that I said Section, not Chapter). Even then, the explanations are so obtuse and convoluted that it is almost impossible for anyone without a vector based application background to figure out what's going on.
I suppose if one has experience with Corel or the Adobe products, this book makes sense and probably covers all the bells and whistles. But if you're a relatively computer literate person who just wants to learn how to use CorelDraw 12 from the ground up, get a different book.

Companion site works fine!.......2005-11-28

I use this book to supplement our graphic illustration course at a local college. It's amazingly precise for a third party manual and extremely thorough in covering every aspect of the program. We follow the tutorials to create our practical design projects.

One reviewer mentioned he had troubles with the companion Web site, but we've never had a problem downloading the files. We follow the Downloads link and locate the book from the alphabetized list. It's a couple of clicks at most.

No Working Companion Site as Advertised on the Book Cover.......2005-11-10

I went to the McGraw Hill page set aside for the images in the book so that I could use them to work along with the book. This is always a very big factor in my decision to buy software oriented books. Most software books now have a companion site if a CD was not included. Literally, over 90% of the 20 software books I have bought in the past three months have a companion site online if they do not supply images and other goodies on a CD in the book itself. Being able to follow along with the same images is an invaluable learning tool. This book advertises the availability of images online on the cover and within. I'm afraid however, that the web links on the companion web page lead to nowhere and McGraw Hill's technical support person could not have cared less. He never got back to me as promised, the links are still broken and if I could I would return the book. The person I spoke to simply didn't care about my problem (apathetic beyond description)-it was quite evident in his tone of voice and in the ultimate not fixing of the problem. And yes, I spoke to the correct department. This is all Unfortunate, as this book has the potential to be a terrific workbook. Now it is nothing more than a run of the mill book and I don't like to buy from companies that do not stand behind their products and mislead their customers as to what their purchase includes. Shame on you Osborne/McGraw Hill. Hopefully, someone from this mega book supplier will see this review and fix the companion site. For now , I will not be buying any books from Osborne/McGraw Hill or any of its associated companies.

A great Jewish reference book.......2000-06-04

This book makes an original bar or bat mitzvah gift and is a companion to the Slater team's other books about Great Jewish Women and Great Jewish Men. The division into categories rather than straight chronology makes it the kind of book one browses rather than reads right through, but the writing is light and interesting and suitable for all age groups. The "moments" the authors have highlighted are well chosen to provide a wide-ranging and varied overview of the history of the Jewish people.

Good Textbook, Limited Value Otherwise.......2006-09-06

This is a good textbook for teaching, and not as good of a source for research for real world application reference material, which is what I try to maintain a library to utilize. Very basic material coverage, good for students.

Indispensable books for safety and reliability engineers.......2004-08-23

Alhough Ang and Tang's Volumes I and II are already over 20 years old, I consider these books as one of the best on probabilistic design methods in civil engineering. The books cover topics such as 'statistical decision analysis (including CBA, MCA, MCDM)', 'queueing models', 'extreme value theory', 'Monte Carlo simulation', 'failure probability calculation' and 'system reliability techniques'. A huge amount of examples are embedded in the theory. They are ideal to be used as examination questions (which the reviewer succesfully does for his courses on 'Probabilistic Design' and 'Probabilistic Design in Hydraulic Engineering' at TU Delft, The Netherlands).

Civil engineers with an interest in design of maritime -, hydraulic - and coastal structures will miss the probabilistic description of sea waves and current loads. The second edition (2000) of Goda may fill this gap (available at Amazon under 981023256X). Engineers interested in probabilistic description of structural dynamics are referred to the second edition (2004) of YK Lin and GQ Cai (available at Amazon under 0071438009). The connection of probability theory with finite element models (one of the reviewer's main fields of interest) is not covered by the above mentioned books. Something for Volume III...?

Still the best book.......1999-12-28

I have used this book and Vol 2 in my graduate and undergraduate courses. Having used a variety of texts for teaching and learning about probability and statistics in an engineering context, I would say the two volumes by Ang and Tang have no rivals. Lots and lots of good engineering type problems.

Excellent text for beginning engineering probability study........1999-04-05

We used this text as the first half of a graduate course in engineering reliability. It presented the concepts clearly and in terms of engineering problems rather than card picking and coin flipping like many other probability and statistics texts. It also provided a thorough treatment of the mathematical basis of the sciences of probability and statistics.

The second volume is also an excellent text, though I have had trouble locating it recently. It treats the issues of reliability and decision analysis in more detail.
