    Book Description

A romantic comedy of love unrequited, Empire is Scott's first work for AdHouse Books and his most personal work to date. Taking place during the 1990's, we get to see "Joe" (aka Scott) take in a Morrissey concert, experiment with drugs and yearn for a girl. My Own Little Empire is your chance to see how one of the most prolific comic creators today spent his teenage years.

    5 out of 5 stars HUGELY IDENTIFYABLE!.......2005-07-07

"My Own Little Empire" is one of those very personal and thoughtful books that make the small and alternative press so enjoyable to read. Scott Mills' self-described minimalist style and artful use of zip-a-tone blend for a unique cartooning style, at once rough around the edges and yet appropriate for the subject matter. "My own Little Empire" is a 90's story of directionless teens from Mills' own experiences. Pete, Roger, Paul, Roop, Kevin, Joey, Seth and a few others do what teens do: dick around in cars, hang out at the mall for no early reason, attend concerts, and goof off in school.

I'm not sure there's an age barrier here. I knew guys like this when I was in high school in the late 70's and I think most can relate to the issues touched on. The central theme is Joey's unrequited love for Jackie and her seeming willingness to return the affection, but doesn't want to her current boyfriend, Rupert. Likewise, Joey's afraid the massive Roop will pound him if he finds out. We all probably had a similar unrequited love in your own high school experiences.

The strips range from the sadness of Joey's love for Jackie to the outrageous as Joey, Roger, and Pete all try acid and Joey suddenly remembers he was supposed to inventory and re-organize the store where he works, with predictably disastrous results. Couple the acid induced paranoia with a road trip to an old, abandoned hospital, and Scott Mills takes readers on quite a ride. It harkens me back to when I was in college and there was an abandoned mental facility with tunnels underground that we used to stupidly frequent and party in. Scott delivered a blow of deja-vu there! I found myself liking this book much more than I thought I would. It's as simplistic as can be yet its themes hit the mark dead on target.

Great idea, pretty much right out of Foxworthy's routines, but not very funny, as all of the you might's are true for the avid turkey hunter. As a veteran, I really didn't find this book entertaining due all the scenerios being true for me. Plus he repeats himself on several pages. Cute idea and it got my 10 bucks but it's more value is more in the range of 4.00 bucks.

For better or worse, television advertising occasionally becomes a touchstone in our lives. Chevrolet's "Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie," Alka-Seltzer's spicy meatball, the Federal Express fast talker, the Energizer Bunny, "Bo Knows" Nike, Quaker Oats' Mikey--these and a select group of other video campaigns get so embedded in our psyches that we can easily recall them, word-for-word and scene-by-scene, many years after they last were aired. The 100 Best TV Commercials ... and Why They Worked, by advertising and marketing columnist Bernice Kanner, takes a critical but fond look at the best commercials in 15 categories, including "Show and Tell," "The Sound of Music," "Animal Magnetism," "Comparatively Speaking," and "Killer Comedy." While the book unabashedly "honors esthetics more than effectiveness in moving product," Kanner still seeks to celebrate those "artful and artistic" efforts that manage to push their various objects or ideas more successfully than the competition. One pleasant surprise: more than half of those chosen will be unfamiliar to most Americans, as they aired only in the U.K., France, Japan, Spain, and eight other countries that take their TV commercials as seriously as advertisers do in the U.S. --Howard Rothman

      Book Description

      Who cares about commercials?

All of us, that's who. The television commercial has become a part of the American narrative, as important a signifier of our times as a great work of literature or
a blockbuster motion picture. Indeed, we often care more about the commercials than we do about the programming itself (ask any Super Bowl aficionado). The ad is art . . . and some of the art is brilliant.
The hundred commercials in this book are brilliant. They were selected by a team of experts at the Leo Burnett Company, creators of Tony the Tiger and the Maytag Repairman, in collaboration with dozens of advertising pros from around the globe and throughout the industry. Their choices represent the very best that the advertising world has to offer. Together, they portray a half century of human hopes, wishes, and dreams.
Bernice Kanner, whose "On Madison Avenue" column in New York magazine was required reading for more than a decade, has taken each of these small masterpieces and analyzed what made them work, why they so successfully moved us, and how they broke through the clutter to become a part of the cultural landscape.
From the Marlboro Man to the Energizer Bunny, The 100 Best TV Commercials provides a hundred important lessons in how we communicate and persuade today. It is vital reading for those who create our commercial culture . . . and those who live in it.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Words cannot convey..........2000-09-01

This book covers some *great* commercials. It should be a *great* book, but it is not. Kanner is a talented writer, but she is trying to convey in words something that can only be conveyed visually. I would buy this book in a second if it were accompanied by a CD or a DVD containing the commercials.

As it is, it is hard to recommend the book, when the words fall so far short of conveying the essence of any commercial. (To see what I mean, try reading about a commercial you remember well. You will note that the description is accurate, but it does not delvier the complexity of the experience you had when you watched the commercial.)

It's not a bad book. In fact, it's probably as good as a book like this gets. But words are not a medium suited to the task at hand. Books about advertising work better when they are about print campaigns.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining, nostalgic an educational fun read........1999-07-30

With the hundreds of thousands of commercials we see over the years, it's illuminating to be able to have someone separate the chaff from the wheat. Here we have the 100 best of all time. Just about all of them have entered the popular culture. It's fun reading and remembering how they sold their products and services and how much more emotional and impactful commercials used to be.

5 out of 5 stars indispensable for some; fascinating for others.......1999-07-29

This is an indispensable guide to what makes advertising work for anyone interested in advertising; and interesting for anyone who didn't think he/she was. Best of all, in a witty way, Kanner explains what the advertising had to do and whether it did it! A classic...

3 out of 5 stars Great concept, wrong medium!.......1999-07-12

Turn this into a video and I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Because 40% of the included commercials are foreign, and therefore unfamiliar to most U.S. audiences, the author's words are essential to conveying the concept of the ad. As talented as Kanner is, her descriptions of the commercials fall flat. I want to *see* the commercials she's talking about, along with first-person commentary with the parties involved.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Reference and Primer for Marketers.......1999-06-15

Kanner, an author and advertising columnist, has compiled this nice compendium of top television advertisements, and separated them into their "sell types", such as comparison ads, comic ads, product sample ads, etc. It is a good reference and primer for anyone interested in starting out in the ad biz. Included in the book are such memorable ads as American Tourister's suitcase with the gorilla ad, Memorex's "Live or Memorex" ad, and the classic Timex "Takes a Licking but Keeps on Ticking." To Kanner's credit, she includes some interesting analyses about each ad's results. When I saw her page for Coke's "Mean Joe Green" ad, I thought, "Ah hah, have I caught her in a gaphe? Although memorable the client actually thought that commercial was failure." But Kanner mentions that Coca Cola actually wented to use Roger Staubach, and that they replaced the ad after they saw it didn't work well. That thoroughness confirms that this book is a book reference.

As war simmers on the borders of Silvanesti, Dalamar will find a way to learn his art. His quest will take him along dark paths toward an awesome destiny.

      4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2006-08-06

Having been a huge fan of the original DragonLance books back in high school, I couldn't wait to read this one, and it didn't disappoint me. I enjoyed finding out what it was that made Dalamar become the mage he was. If you're a DL fan, I think you'll like this one, too.

1 out of 5 stars Too many inconsistencies with existing DL.......2004-09-30

Had Nancy Varian Berberick played D&D before or read up on Dragonlance before writing this?

One of the most painful moments in this book is reading about Dalamar taking out a Blue Dragon by himself, by casting lightning bolts!

There is also the parts about not one but many dwarven mages running around the realms.

The portion about Dalamar taking the Test at the Tower of High Sorcery was not too bad though.

The book started off well enough. After a prologue which basically recapitulated what readers of Legends already know, the first chapter set Dalamar as a lowly servant in a caste-rigid society of Silvanesti. The elven kingdom was under threat by the dragonarmy - and Dalamar suggested strategy to hit the rear of the enemy when it was clear the elves were overpowered. The strategy was carried out but the sheer might of the dragon against the elves meant it could not turn the tide after all.

The book followed with Dalamar fleeing along with the rest of refugees from Silvanesti to Ergoth where the haughty elves enslaved the wild elves inhabitants of Ergoth.

Through the process, until the elves returned to Silvanesti, the author made repeated shows of Dalamar losing faith and totally put off with the Silvanesti's obsession with the worship of Eli, or Paladine. However, the true clerics had long ago been removed from Krynn prior to the Cataclysm and elven societies were supposed to have given up on the gods as well. They may preserve the memories, but no cleric received any spells until (1) the Dark Queen granted her followers spells, and (2) Goldmoon became a cleric of Mishakal through the staff and the Platinum Discs were recovered. Clearly the author missed out an integral aspect of the settings of Dragonlance. An author may reserve her own creative license, but when writing within an established fictional setting, should either comply or set up her own.

4 out of 5 stars Dalamar: the Early Years.......2003-03-30

This Dragonlance Classics book tells the story of Dalamar's youth in Silvanesti and his eventual calling to the dark arts. He is cast out of his Elven home and left on his own to pursue his fate. He goes to the Tower to be tested, and is willingly used by the leadership of the Tower to complete a task that would allow more than one person the revenge they seek. Berberick's telling is good although her characterization of Dalamar falls slightly short of his personality from what we know of him from other stories. Her perspective of the fall of Silvanost and Lorac's Nightmare is insightful and well written, and ties well into the Chronicles storyline. This is a good book for someone who has already read the core books of the Dragonlance series.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to the Dragonlance line!.......2002-12-21

This is definitely one of Nancy Berberick's best -- which, as a longtime fan of her writing, is saying a lot. The evolutionary years of one of Dragonlance's most intriguing, disturbing characters are finally revealed, taking the reader through the tortuous process of shaping the man he will become. This book is pure delight, from start to finish, and sure to please the many fans of the Dragonlance line!

      3 out of 5 stars Misrepresents.......2002-03-07

This story is intriquing and an interesting read if you enjoyt he character Dalamar however there are several flaws that I found to be distracting and disappointing. First of all, the portrayal of te Silvanesti elves was harsh to the point where you could hardly call them "good" at all. The author seems to make the assumption that if you fight the "bad" guys, in this case a number of evil wizards and a dragon Highlord that makes you "good," which is not true at all. The Chronicles series sets you up to realize that the Silvanesti are incredibly snooty and uptight, but not cold and unconcerned about themselves. Yes, they have avoided the outside world and show disinterest there but former authors of the series never through out the belief they walk over each other on a daily basis. It is an assumption i believe this author got wrong. Also, it describes Dalamar's path into darkness in a fairly unbelievable way. Dalamar is potrayed as in intelligent individual who suddenly turns to darkness for reasons that just come with living. Also, at times when Dalamar is portrayed at his darkest, you get the feeling you are reading about Raistlin and not him. In Legends and the Summer Flame, Dalamar has feelings, good ones. He is a dark elf mage not some power hungry warlord.

In short, this portrayal of Dalamar is only believable if you change the character we know as Dalamar from the other books and since you probably pick up this book because you liked the character in the other books, then it is probably not all that worthwhile. However it is not a bad read, just don't expect too much insight into the character in the title. As mentioned in other reviews, this has a lot more to do with events than the character Dalamar and when it does talk about Dalamar, it does so poorly.

      4 out of 5 stars Great book........2007-08-21

I love the Visual Quick Start series, and this book is no exception. It has jump starred my blog and I feel it is worth keeping around for hints and questions that come up. I wasn't sure if the book being published a few years ago would still be relevant but it is.

4 out of 5 stars Short, Simple, Powerful.......2007-07-20

Wow, I am shocked at how much I learned about blogging in just 120 pages. The author has done a great job at getting this book down to the bare-bones, leaving nothing but the necessary information. The method of using graphics more than text really made this an easy read, yet conveyed much more information than text alone.

I knew a little about blogging and had already begun using blogger when I read this book. I did not expect to learn as much as I did; I did not know about the many extra features, such as blogging from a phone. This book is work every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully Simple. Really........2007-05-07

If you like books that combine images with easy-to-understand instructions, Publishing a Blog with Blogger is for you.

This book is a no-nonsense guide to begin blogging fast and easy. I have three blogs, and this book taught me more about starting and making simple changes than I've read anywhere else.

I especially appreciate Chapter 3's information on blogging by phone or Email and numerous ideas on customizing your blog space. This book focuses on the Blogger platform; however, the tips are usable on any type of blog.

Get this book if your goal is to create a blog with minimum effort and maximum results.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginning Bloggers.......2007-03-23

      *****
This book is very visual, lots of fun, and easy to read and understand---in short, perfect for the beginning blogger. It is the exact opposite of a reference manual, and thus is very hands on. Note that this book is only for people who want to use Blogger, which is free, to publish their blog. If you don't know what you want to publish your blog with, you like the "free" part, and you're not a business, you probably will be very, very happy with Blogger. So this would definitely be the book for you.

It is only 127 pages, so it's not overwhelming to read. You can easily go through it over a weekend and get your blog up and running. If you have HTML or XHTML experience, you'll find lots of good things, too, so slightly more experienced bloggers may still pick up a few tips, like how to change their header on a template or how to syndicate their blog.

If you are a geek, you won't need this book. You'll just log onto Blogger and think it's "intuitive" and be able to do everything. However, if you're like me and get stuck a lot, even with so-called "intuitive" software, you'll love this book.

Even though this book was published in 2005, and yes, Blogger is in a new version, I haven't found any problems applying what is in the book. None at all. The new version of Blogger just does more things for you; everything in the book still needs to be done one way or another. So it's doesn't make the book dated as far as it's utility goes. If you're really a beginner (which is who this book is for) you might not even notice.

There are pictures throughout of what the screens look like, so instead of TELLING you what to do and letting you figure it out, the book SHOWS you what to do and you just follow along. It keeps things as simple as possible.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book, Needs Updating.......2006-12-15

As others have attested, this is an excellent beginning guide. It is clear and easy to understand, in large part due to the screen shots and non-technical language. It is definitely an entry-level book.

What was lacking for me was that Blogger has just moved to a new version so the interface for editing much of the code in templates and other helps has changed. This will be a challenge for a relative beginner such as myself.

For just getting the basics, this is a great book, but keep in mind that there are changes to Blogger since it was printed.

REALLY, if they come knocking and telling you how the world is going to end this second (or maybe next week) and their proof is how bad times are and how many things are going wrong... well you can whip this little book out and show them just how horrible life has been all along! A little perspective! But wait... you started a dialogue with them .. and they'll be back.. again, and again, and again... oh no!

4 out of 5 stars A good read for those with short attention spans.......2000-09-17

I enjoyed reading this book a lot, but when I finished it, I realized there were some things I would have liked it to discuss. This book focuses mostly on the disasters of the modern centuries. That's fine, for some people, I guess, but I tend to be more interested in stuff that took place before the middle ages. This book also made a good attempt to be eurocentric, and it did cover some interesting events from other parts of the world, but I got bored hearing about every time Mount Vesuvius erupted.

        4 out of 5 stars A good bathroom book.......1999-07-19

The book was well written and somewhat humorous. The short write-ups of each disaster makes it an easy book to pick-up and put-down on a frequent basis. The events are in chronological order which makes it easy to find your favorite clamity.

4 out of 5 stars Great bachelor coffee table book...........1998-09-02

In all seriousness, it is interesting how the world and history has forgotten so many disasters (both natural and man-made) that have occured throughout history... Spurs the mind to look up more about some of the events that are touched on in the book...

4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it........1998-07-06

The book was easy reading because it gave short, concise, interesting synopses of world history. The book included both man-made and natural disasters from the big bamg to 3-mile island. A must for all history teachers and anyone who likes to read about history. The book is easy reading and you can get through it in a day.

One of the charms of Zecharia Sitchin is his tendency to take ancient writings as fact as opposed to myth. For example, according to clay tablets discovered by archeologists, Gilgamesh, a king of ancient Sumeria, was punished by the gods for raping female subjects on their wedding day--a particularly naughty, though not uncommon, pastime of ancient royalty. Snickering, the tricky gods created a double of him, which, as you can imagine, created havoc in the king's life. Some time later, directed by his goddess mother, Gilgamesh walked with his double to Lebanon to attain immortality. Sitchin ponders that perhaps the double had superhuman strength and en route built a second Stonehenge discovered in the Golan Heights by Israelis during the 1967 Six Days War. Hmmm. As Sitchin concedes, there's really no way to tell who actually built this hoary structure, but the in-depth archeological and historical research gathered here to support his musings concerning an extraterrestrial secret code to construct humankind is fascinating beyond belief. --P. Randall Cohan

        Book Description

Many thousands of years ago, a race of extraordinary beings guided the evolution of life on Earth -- determining the existence and nature of mankind as we know it today. All powerful, all knowing, the proof of their genius is apparent in the mysterious monoliths at Stonehenge, and in a strange but highly significant sturcture of concentric stone circles in Israel's Golan Heights -- both requiring sophisticated astronomical knowledge. Teaching man to look to the heavens, they bequeathed to us the Cosmic Code.

The newest entry in a carefully researched multivolume series tracing the creation and motivation of mankind, this book identifies the turning point in our species' delicate balance between the demands of destiny and the vagaries of fate. From deep inside ancient Sumerian texts that predate even the Bible, Zecharia Sitchin dares to reveal the nature of prophecy and historical truths that have long been obscured by disbelief and misunderstanding: the code used to construct our kind by master builder from the stars.

Another great book by Zachariah Sitchen, I have read all eight books of his Earth chronicles and they are all very mind boggling.

1 out of 5 stars Misunderstandings and baseless assertions Ahoy!.......2004-08-18

For all those praising the academic/scholastic merit of this work, yours must have a detailed references section that the one I picked up seems to lack. I would give him a D- and a "See Me!" had this had shown up on my desk. Someone should point out to him that evolution has no direction, as if we were destined to get to this point and are no longer evolving. Be careful of the plethora of misunderstandings and baseless assertions that can destroy a person's capacity to think about humans at all scientifically, historically, or otherwise. If you're incredulous of my own assertions, please research anything in Sitchin's works. You will have done more research than he likely did, and could even cite it. Don't take one sourceless book's word for it! You'll find planet X (Tiamat?) prophesies, space stations made of rocks, and millions of years of evolution very slightly co-opted by extra-terrestrials less believable than you once did. There are, after all, enough actual mysteries in the world. We don't need another convoluted theory that creates far more problems than it solves. It's no fluke that these books have made no waves in challenging any anthropological or historical constructions of earlier periods of humanity, areas of knowledge that are constantly modified by actual scholarship. It's also no fluke that these books are marginally profitable, and they keep being released, expanding upon the baseless foundation with even more baseless structure rather than defending the indefensible first works. As far as I'm concerned, if he's one of the few who can decipher those texts, he's abusing his position for financial gain, and could easily be ousted in the genre by a legitimate scholar.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion.......2002-05-03

Waiting for Sitchin's new books, is like waiting for the next Episode of Star Wars. It just can't come soon enough. This is an excellent companion volume to the Earth Chronicle series and sheds additional light. The more you read, the more you ask; Are we more like the Anunnaki or are they more like us? Good book!

        4 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2002-01-06

If Sitchin's Annunaki theories is what you like reading this book is just like his other books. This is a recap on his interpretations of ancient Sumerarian writtings.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview for the popular audience of quantum physics.......2007-07-19

A very good overview, written for the popular audience, of quantum physics, originally written in 1982, by physicist Heinz Pagels. The first part of the book deals with the history of the subject. The second part, the (then) newer stuff, including complex subjects like Bell's Theorem. Unfortunately, since Pagels died in a mountaineering accident in 1988, there hasn't been an update of the book (because of the speed of the scientific discovery, even the best science books can get quickly outdated). That's why the newer stuff in physics, mainly string theory, is not covered here. Still, a very good book.

        5 out of 5 stars Cosmic Code.......2007-03-12

This book was mentioned in a previous book I have read (The Biology of Belief - Lipton). This book easily explains a tough subject like quantum physics. I found it strange that someone like myself (mostly read spiritual books) would enjoy a scientific discussion of the very small. I could not put the book down. If you enjoy reading spiritual books, you will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great outline of quantum theory.......2006-01-03

Wonderfully and lucidly written. Lays out most of the basics of quantum theory in an accessible way.

        4 out of 5 stars Good..........2005-07-05

Excellent transaction...would do business with again. Book a little more worn than stated.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on a complex, abstract subject.......2003-10-02

This is the best Quantum Physics book even written for the lay man. Infact, it might even be the best popular science book ever written. I have been a fan of this book for over 15 years and I feel that it is "must read" for every student involved or pursuing any branch of pure science (not necessarily physics).

Amazingly well explained concepts that stream you to the miniscule, abstract world of Quantum Mechanics.

5 out of 5 stars For Those Who Like to Think.......2000-02-08

Chuck Missler's careful detail within his books tend to make his writing difficult to keep up with. Cosmic Codes is an exception. His chapters are broken up into headings that allow the reader to take a breath or to chew like the intellectual cows we tend to become. Cosmic Codes is not for the faint of thought, you have to be ready to think; to think beyond time, space and our predefined view of reality. Cosmic Codes also puts the "Bible Code" in its proper place. They do exist, you cannot escape the math on the odds, but Missler puts the evidence in its proper perspective. There are some errors here and there. For example, Rambsel notes the absence of Judas from the Isaiah 53 ELS findings. I have since found it within the text. However, considering the topic and the vast amount of cross-referencing, it is brilliant, albiet imperfect; Like Chuck himself. When reading Cosmic Codes, as with all other works by Chuck Missler, start by reading Acts 17:11 in the Bible; it is his caveat.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad about the mistakes in Hebrew!.......2000-01-20

This is such an interesting book, but perhaps Missler has copied the Hebrew errors of Bullinger, Jeffrey, and Rambsel, when discussing the Torah Codes. There are many absurdities. At the bottom of page 112, what in the world is "tegoleh"? In the center of page 155, in describing Jesus as a Nazarene, the Hebrew word would be "Notzri," spelled nun, tzadi, resh, yod. It is related to "Netzer," meaning branch. Instead, he has spelled "Nazir," which means a monk or abstainer: nun, zayin, yod, resh. The full-page chart on page 159 is full of mistakes. This kind of carelessness makes Christian "authorities" on Hebrew scriptures look foolish, and their subjective "codes" even more so. This is unfortunate, but the average reader needs to be informed.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible panorama of evidence illumimating the bible.......1999-10-28

This book is for believers and nonbelievers both. This book will take the reader on a journey through the Hebrew scriptures and the codes beneath them, including the Yeshua codes. Also, detailed background on the Feasts of Israel, the fulfilled prophecies of the Hebrew scriptures, and more fascinating tidbits than I can write about here. Reading this will make you realize how much you can miss by just glossing over the scriptures casually as so many of us do.

5 out of 5 stars A most interesting book you won't want to put down........1999-10-17

"Cosmic Codes" by Chuck Missler, helps confirm ones beliefs, not through faith alone, but through the complexity of design in the form of messages through symbolism and ciphertext, which our LORD has so diligently placed within HIS written word "The Bible". Chuck Missler takes you through an overview of these messages, systematically placed by JESUS CHRIST; to authenticate HIS word as HE proclaimed it. For those who consider the "Bible" as just another storybook, prepare to throw that view right out the window. I recommend that you hold on to your "brown britches" (Lord Nelson pun), for HIS coming is surely on the horizon. In reading "Cosmic Codes" one can enjoy the work of a man who has dedicated himself to proclaiming that love declared by our LORD, to all those who would listen. The choice to hear that message of love is now up to you!
