    Book Description

Political economists have viewed large public expenditures as a product of leftist government and the expression of a stronger representation of labor interest. The formation of governments' funding bases is a topic that has not been thoroughly explored, and this book sheds important new light on the issue of taxes and welfare. Beginning with a clarification of the development of postwar tax policies in industrial democracies, Junko Kato finds that the differentiation of tax revenue structure is path dependent upon the shift to regressive taxation. Kato challenges the conventional belief that progressive taxation leads to large public expenditures in mature welfare states.

    Download Description

Government size has attracted much scholarly attention. Political economists have considered large public expenditures a product of leftist rule and an expression of a stronger representation of labor interest. Although the size of the government has become the most important policy difference between the left and right in postwar politics, the formation of the government's funding base has not been explored. Junko Kato finds that the differentiation of tax revenue structure is path dependent upon the shift to regressive taxation. Since the 1980s, the institutionalization of effective revenue raising by regressive taxes during periods of high growth has ensured resistance to welfare state backlash during budget deficits and consolidated the diversification of state funding capacity among industrial democracies. The book challenges the conventional wisdom that progressive taxation goes hand-in-hand with large public expenditures in mature welfare states and qualifies the partisan-centered explanation that dominates the welfare state literature.

I've been following Tami Knight's work for years, when she used to be published in Canadian mountaineering magazines. She was our little secret for years, and whenever we saw an American sitting there bemused by some Canadian mountaineering foible, we'd laugh and laugh and laugh. Then we read Tami and really laugh.

Anyway, given recent events on the Big Momo, people might think this book rude, crude and mean. It is. So is Tami Knight. Which is why it must be read. Knight puts her finger right on the main problems with mountaineering nowadays and pushes for all she's worth. Get this book now, before the Ethics Committee has it pulled.

4 out of 5 stars Tongue in cheek.......2000-03-21

Well, I agree this is the irreverence that the Everest genre was waiting for! I laughed quite a bit, and smiled at much of it.

The Dianas (Princesses that is) expedition really tickled my funny bone the most. How inspired to take two such icons, both ludicrously unattainable for most mere mortals, and marry them.

Humour is such a subjective thing, you will either love it or hate it. But don't condemn this take on Everest because of a misapprehension of what it is about. It is a cartoon book. It does actually say more about the reality of the sponsorship and money side of 'personal Everests' than all the thousands of words I have read on the subject thus far.

5 out of 5 stars Almost As Good As the Real Thing.......1999-11-27

I thought I was buying another adventure narrative when I purchased this book, instead it is a bunch of comics that are, well, not comical. I just want you to be forewarned that this is not a real book.

5 out of 5 stars It was like she was right there- amazing!.......1999-11-06

And I thought only my hairdresser knew for sure what happened on that fated mountain. Read Tami's new book to find out what everybody else in the world failed to reveal. Or make up!

5 out of 5 stars Boy prefers to Sponge.......1996-05-18

...Actually, this book is a hilarious compendium ofthoughts and jokes related to myself and most of my friends who are rather unabashedly living off our parents. One friend, who particularly loved the book said, "You know when you go out to a bar. And somebody orders five drinks and then gets up to leave after throwing two dollars on table? Well, I'm that person." She loved the book and was happier to give it as a gift to her benefactors rather than being stung by the inssult of receiving it from them. This book is funny, well-written and very, very true! I heartily recommend it! I just wish I could have found a way to not pay for it!

That's Latin for this book was pretty darn funny. I spotted it while I was...ah, over at a friends house with a few minutes to kill and wound up taking 'Sponging' home. (Actually I'm staying at my sister's), but anyway I laughed out loud while she and her husband were watching a sad movie, 'Pretty Woman' I think, anyway they asked what was so gosh darn funny and I started reading them a few passages out of the book. We wound up turning the movie off and just laughing our heads off taking turns reading the book. Needless to say, it bought me a few extra weeks on my sister's couch. Two empty pockets way up. I'm going to borrow a couple more copies for my friends.

This little gem is crazy! Flat out. Hysterical. You'll have a good laugh, but wait! Let me let you in on a lil' secret - it's useful! Here's the dope: I'm well known amongst my pal's for bein a sponger so they gave me this tome as a well-intentioned and kindly hint to change my way of living and quit taking advantage of them. Big mistake. I nodded a smiled and admitted I had transgressed the boundries of common courtesy. Secretly I set several plans into motion to sponge off of them and all the ideas were gleaned right outta this little baby! Hah! The fools! Never underestimate the power of sponging. Book Description

Re-reading Freud's writing on femininity, fantasy and social identification, Lost Angels expands the psychoanalytic framework within which contemporary debates regarding fantasy and spectatorship have been taking place.
Vicky Lebeau takes Freud's preoccupation with femininity and feminine fantasy as her starting point and goes on to explore his differentiation between masculine and feminine forms of fantasy through feminist and critical theories of spectatorship and cinema.
Investigating how psychoanalysis explains fantasy as a form of preoccupation which cuts across both `private' and `public' forms of fantasy, Lebeau links discussion of the female spectator with the so-called `malaise' of today's mass culture through her close readings of three key `youth' films of the 1980's--John Hughes' Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Francis Coppola's Rumble Fish and Tim Hunter's River's Edge. River's Edge.

4 out of 5 stars Jones reaches...and grabs hold of some truths.......2004-11-10

The negative reviewers have a point; Jones' rough-and-ready version of history fails to fill in the gaps of the entire lives of his subjects. However, they too, in their lack of historical comprehension fail to see (the critical) something: that his basic theses, that these revolutionary men (the former reviewers do not even understand this _historical_ term!) had a profound effect on our culture, and were in turn profoundly affected by their vital deviancies, are correct. Shame on them for writing such poor reviews.

5 out of 5 stars What we know is true but don't want to admit.......2004-09-16

My difficulty with reading this book the first time as a Yale grad student in 1994 was that I had a conservative worldview when it came to everything but music. I knew deep down inside that Jones was onto something, but I couldn't bring myself to admit it, because I was so close to my music. Now that I am a bit older and have gone back and re-read the book--and now that I am further from adolescence and from my music--I see that what he was saying is on the mark. If you start with a more liberal set of cultural assumptions about culture and the arts, you will disagree with Jones. However, if you have a basic conservative worldview and don't like this book, it's probably because you're going with your heart and not your head.

2 out of 5 stars Jones really doesn't understand Schoenberg.......2004-05-26

          E. Michael Jones has written much on the problems of modernism and the modern world. Gropius and his cohorts have given us an architecture that is bland in the extreme. The sexual revolution has caused untold harm. I admire and respect some of his earlier work, but I really must disagree with Jones with respect to Arnold Schoenberg.

Schoenberg was in many ways a traditionalist. Despite his often groundbreaking work, and with exceptions such as the Five Orchestral Pieces, he kept Brahmsian rhythms and more or less worked in classical forms. This is especially true of Schoenberg's last period. Schoenberg did not see himself as a revolutionary. He saw himself as one carrying on the Austro-German school of composition, a school that he viewed as absolutely central to music as a whole. It was his hope that his new theories of composition would maintain the dominance of the Austro-German school for at least a hundred years.

This has not happened. If anything, Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern are the summation of the Austro-German school of composition. Schoenberg was at the heart of the Austro-German school.

Jones, in stating that Schoenberg ventured into atonality because of an unfaithful spouse, really is taking things too far. I don't think that he adequately understands Schoenberg's place in music. It is a pity because rock music and other forms of popular music have been terribly destructive as he rightly points out. Unfortunately, Jones does not posess an adequate understanding of the traditionalist roots of Arnold Schoenberg.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as "Degenerate Moderns". . ........2002-11-21

          . . .but important nevertheless.

In his first book, Jones postulated that much of the decay of modernism could be traced to the sinful rationalizations of evil behavior by Freud, Jung, and others. In this volume, Jones tackles the role of modern music in this societal decay. The chapter on Wagner was very good -- although not nearly enough was said about the importance of Wagner's later work (which caused an irreparable break with Nietzche.

The chapters on Nietzche and Schonberg were informative -- but one got the impression that material was being repeated over and over. A bit of editorial direction would have helped here.

When Jones gets into modern pop music, his argument is both strengthened and weakened. Strengthened by the truly uncontrolled behavior of many of today's rock musicians (to say nothing of the lyrics). Weakened in the attempt to lump pretty much ALL jazz and pop into one category -- a serious mistake in my estimation.

All in all, however, a good book -- but not as good as his first.

2 out of 5 stars the end of the world as we know it.......2002-07-26

Although the first chapter about Wagner was at times fascinating, most of the book is a rather catty rant about rock 'n' roll and jazz which seems to have been the cause, according to the author, of a myriad of culture-shattering "evils" including free love, Harlem ghettos, abortion and the civil rights movement (!). On page 85, he writes, "The civil rights movement was nothing more than the culmination of an attempt to transform the Negro into a paradigm of sexual liberation that had been the pet project of the cultural revolutionaries since the 20s." Gee, and I'd always thought it came about to right the wrongs of the last 100 years since the Civil War! This kind of revisionist history (which much of the book is) can at times be humourous and at times frightening, especially when one worries that the people reading it might not know much about the 19th century and believe everything written here. According to the book, "Tristan and Isolde probably did more than anything else to bring about this mood of yearning for sexual liberation." Gee, and I thought it was the sexual repression of the 19th century... there I am, wrong again! At times the book is quite insulting to the readers' intelligence and certainly to jazz and rock and roll which the writer seems to think the 20th century chose as music simply because there was nothing left worth listening to in the classical realm. He sees the choice as a lowering of standards... often I wondered exactly what he was trying to say here. Anyway, a pity. A lot of the history was interesting, but I certainly wouldn't recommend the book to the gullible who might start walking the streets with a sign which reads "The end is near!"

              Book Description

XML is a completely platform agnostic data medium. Flash is able to make use of XML data, which is very useful when you are creating Rich Internet Applications -- it allows you to populate Flash web interfaces with data from pretty much any source that supports XML as a data medium, be it databases, raw XML files, or more excitingly, .Net applications, web services, and even Microsoft Office applications such as Excel and Word! In this book, Sas Jacobs first introduces XML itselfwhat it is, its syntax, its associated technologies (such as CSS and XSLT,) and how to get XML out of your applications in a format Flash can use. Then she shows how to use the XML object to stream XML data into Flash, and how to use the XMLConnector component and XML Sockets to build advanced Flash/XML applications. Numerous example applications are built throughout the book, including an MP3 player, XML photo gallery, an Excel-driven web catalog, Access and Word-driven content management systems, and an XML-driven chat application.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-12-26

I really do not understand what the negative reviews are all about for this book. Even if you do not want to use office to generate your xml, you can still read over those chapters use the xml file created and learn HOW TO USE xml in flash which is what this book is about. I would probably not use office but I learned alot about processing the xml files that were created by the office program. Anyways this book took me from 0 knowledge about xml in flash to becoming fairly copmpetent in this subject. I highly recommend this book.

              1 out of 5 stars Horrible Book.......2006-10-27

I had to purchase this book for a class I'm taking, and now it's 8 weeks into the semester, and I seriously got nothing at all from this. I'm having better luck looking for tutorials than reading this worthless book. Pictures are horrible, chapters drag on forever, and it's just plain not worth the 40 bucks i lost for this. Find a different book if you're just learning xml and flash, worst purchase in my college years!

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I expected..........2006-07-13

I was actually hoping that it would be the perfect companion to the 'PHP for Flash' & 'Advanced PHP for Flash' series but it's more on the intergration between XML/Flash/MSOffice which in the web-designing industry is kinda/sorta useless since seeing that most of the technology used is PHP/ASP and MySQL.

The book is great for learning the basic functionality of XML with Flash but doesn't really give you the in-depth functions that are so widely used today.

Hopefully there will be an 'Advanced' series out soon.

              Happy flashing!!!

5 out of 5 stars Learning to use XML structured data in Flash projects.......2006-04-10

This clearly written and well-organized book provides an overview of XML and how to use XML structured data in a variety of Flash projects. Anyone who is interested in working with XML in Flash and would like to learn more about how to get started will benefit from the easy-to-follow examples and the range of topics that the author has chosen to cover. Beginning with an overview of XML the chapters quickly move on to show how Flash can use XML data. The content is addressed to both Flash designers and developers. While Flash developers may already be familiar with the uses and specifications for XML schemas, Xpath, and XSLT; many Flash designers will gain an appreciation for many of the complexities of XML, as well as insight into the Web Services model. Later chapters, for example, reveal how to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Access to create XML content.

As one who can manage Flash ActionScripting, but who does not have a strong programming background, I found the background into the various XML types to be quite helpful. The book does an excellent job of explaining entities, relationships, schemas and how to navigate an XML object in order to show the how to use XML content with Flash. I was particularly interested in the many applications for e-learning and found the blend of author's screenshots, code examples and main text to provide a nice balance of learning styles.

I learned a lot from this work and am sure that it would be useful to people who are already familiar with Flash and want to learn more about how to use XML with this program.

5 out of 5 stars Really nice book.......2006-03-10

How to use the XML in the Flash? This is one of the doubts most recurrent in lists and forums of quarrels. Who already tried work in Flash with XML created in one of programs of the Office Package definitively already lost the patience, much calm is necessary to reach the accurate node of the correct skill.

Sometimes we obtain alternatives, but almost always having to lose much time to carry through simple tasks. There the book "Foundation XML for Flash" of the Friends of ED publishing company enters, it presents simple solutions for who works with this type of archive, shows as to work with archives of the Word, Excel, Access besides instruct to work with Web services and much more.

It is a perfect book for who wants have complete reference regarding about the Flash and XML theme.

              Book Description

In the nineteenth century, prominent Bostonians like Thomas Handasyd Perkins and Charles Greely Loring discovered the shore north of Boston as a summer escape from the heat and stink of the city. From the 1820s until the Great Crash of 1929, they and their social brethren built cottages and castles from Nahant to Ipswich, amusing themselves with lawn tennis, polo, yachting, and more eccentric pursuits. (Who can account for John Hays Hammond's castle in Magnolia, or Isabella Stewart Gardner's infatuation, if that's what it was, with gay blade A. Piatt Andrew on Eastern Point?) In this social history, originally published in two volumes as Boston's North Shore and Boston's Gold Coast, Garland offers an affectionate history of America's most civilized resort, with many previously unpublished photographs and maps.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating history and wonderful pictures.......1998-12-26

Recalls the era of grand hotels and processions from Boston to the country shore during the 19th and 20th century when gentlemen and ladies paraded according to a strict code of social behavior. Wonderful photos of bygone places and memories of now suburban places which once were bucolic and a time when life seemed easier and gentler--especially if you were rich enough to enjoy it and not on the 'serving end.'
