An Apple for the Teacher.......2003-04-29
A big shiny crisp apple, minus the worm, for Ms. Powell for having the courage to reveal the reason for America's teacher shortage. Written with honesty, wit, and poignancy, Ms. Powells' story is told in the "We have to laugh to keep from crying" tone well-known to teachers. Using varieties of apples and apple recipes as metaphors for the categories of students, parents, co-workers, and administrators that all educators will recognize, Ms. Powell relates her story in episodic style, interweaving the optimism and idealism of a teacher with the reality of teaching. I can attest to the fact that her experiences with cowardly, inept, unethical, cruel administrators is not unique. While Americans pay lip-service to the importance of education, a thread on anti-intellectualism runs through the fabric of America culture, manifested in placing the blame for all of society's ills on teachers. Demoralized sheep in teachers' clothing willingly act as doormats in exchange for job security until they can finally retire, while unethical educrats go to any length to protect their lucrative positions and self-perceived importance. Superintendents as CEOs, principals as middle managers, and teachers as blue-collar workers [produce] assembly-line students as products, destroying all humanity and joy in the educational process, thereby guaranteeing an endless supply of minimum wage workers and cannon fodder... Her stories and her message are lucid, and all too true. We must hope that this book will serve to inspire other educators to reveal the truth about education; we must heed the advice of this "brilliant eccentric," and demand school reform before education, and democracy, is destroyed in America. As Thomas Jefferson said, "A nation that expects to be ignorant and free...expects what never was and never will be." I recommend this book to all educators, including administrators.
Nail on the Head.......2003-04-04
Rotten Apples - what an understatement! I was a child of the public school system in central Louisiana, were I received a minimal education.
Ms. Powell's book broke my heart and brought back unpleasant memories. Reading it was an emotional roller coaster for me - elated for her in one paragraph and saddened in the next. I felt her pain and frustration. She hit the proverbial "nail on the head". GOB is alive and well on the state, parish and local levels, to a degree that an outsider could only imagine. "...cronyism, nepotism, rascalism...".
Two of my siblings are educators; both have left the public school system - citing many of the same problems that Ms. Powell writes about. I've worked in state and local government most for my career. I have seen it and experienced it first hand.
I thought the book was well written, retrospectively weaving a tale chapter by chapter.
I especially liked the way she used different apple themes to describe each chapter, which offered some comic relief.
Woe to the NON-GOB.

Book Description
Video Content Analysis Using Multimodal Information For Movie Content
Extraction, Indexing and Representation is on content-based multimedia analysis, indexing, representation and applications with a focus on feature films. Presented are the state-of-art techniques in video content analysis domain, as well as many novel ideas and algorithms for movie content analysis based on the use of multimodal information.
The authors employ multiple media cues such as audio, visual and face information to bridge the gap between low-level audiovisual features and high-level video semantics. Based on sophisticated audio and visual content processing such as video segmentation and audio classification, the original video is re-represented in the form of a set of semantic video scenes or events, where an event is further classified as a 2-speaker dialog, a multiple-speaker dialog, or a hybrid event. Moreover, desired speakers are simultaneously identified from the video stream based on either a supervised or an adaptive speaker identification scheme. All this information is then integrated together to build the video's ToC (table of content) as well as the index table. Finally, a video abstraction system, which can generate either a scene-based summary or an event-based skim, is presented by exploiting the knowledge of both video semantics and video production rules.
This monograph will be of great interest to research scientists and graduate level students working in the area of content-based multimedia analysis, indexing, representation and applications as well s its related fields.

Book Description
Pro PHP Security is arguably the most comprehensive PHP security book available, and is highly recommended to any developer or administrator of a PHP-based Web site.
— Michael J. Ross, Slashdot contributor
Pro PHP Security is one of the first books devoted solely to PHP security. It will serve as your complete guide for taking defensive and proactive security measures within your PHP applications. (And the methods discussed are compatible with PHP versions 3, 4, and 5.)
The knowledge you'll gain from this comprehensive guide will help you prevent attackers from potentially disrupting site operation or destroying data. And you'll learn about various security measures, for example, creating and deploying "captchas," validating e-mail, fending off SQL injection attacks, and preventing cross-site scripting attempts.
Customer Reviews:
Very little about PHP security at all.......2007-01-31
The book is entitled PHP security. But the actual content covers very little PHP at
all: less than 20 percent. It tries to cover everything from UNIX permission,SSH
and all other security issues, but really doesn't have much to do with PHP. So I
think the title is highly misleading. For someone interested in the general
security issues, it might be a fine book. But not for programmers want to know
the security about PHP.
Unless you're already well-versed in the topic ..........2006-03-09
Unless you're already very well-versed in the subject matter, ( sql injection, cross-site scripting, session hijacking, remote execution, sanitizing user data/input, ssh, encryption, ssl, dangers of shared-host scenarios, bulletproofing db installations, user verification, captchas, remote procedure calls ) this material is relatively comprehensive and valuable. Well-organized, well thought out, I won't hesitate to recommend this one.
Finally a good book on PHP security issues.......2005-12-15
PHP applications written without a concern for security risk cross-site scripting, SQL injection, session hijacking, and a multitude of other potential problems. This book examines how to setup a secure environment including encryption, hashing, SSL and using PHP to connect to SSL servers. The authors also examine how to install and configure OpenSSH and using it with PHP applications. Of course they also deal with the usual concerns of user authentication, permissions, restrictions, validating input, preventing SQL injection, preventing cross-site scripting, preventing remote execution (including PHP code injection and embedding), security for temporary files, and preventing session hijacking. The Pro PHP Security is written specifically for PHP programmers working in the Apache, MySQL, and PHP 5 environment and is highly recommended
Good information with lots of links to addtional resources.......2005-11-06
This book is great because it's thorough and on each topic it gives lots of links to additional resources. It's easy to read and it's organized well so you can find what you're looking for.
One of the main things I appreciate about this book is that it gives just the right amount of information. It focuses on practical usage of security techniques but I also like to know the high-level picture of how and why things got to be the way they are. This book tells me exactly what I want to know. A good example is the the section on hashing and encryption. It gives some simplified examples of how the algorithms work and talks about where they came from, which ones are better and why, and how to use them. But it doesn't dive too deeply into encryption theory which would only be interesting to someone wanting to code an encryption routine.
Some of the interesting things I learned from this book are:
1) I learned about the various hashing and encryption algorithms. Which ones are good and just how good are they. Before reading this book I couldn't have told you which is better between md5 and sha1.
2) I learned all about protecting against cross-site scripting and sql injection. I thought I had already taken enough precautions on my latest website, MarsBookmark.com, but this section pointed out some attacks I wasn't aware of. It also had links to sites with sample hack attacks you can run against your own website to see if it's vulnerable.
3) I learned how to do captcha screening to make sure people registering for my site are real humans and not robots (I haven't actually implemented this yet but I will soon). The book also pointed out something I never thought of - a hacker with a popular site can proxy registrations from your site to real people trying to register on his site and defeat your captcha by tricking people who think they are answering a captcha for his site. As usual, the author provides lots of links to other sites for more resources on captcha.
I've never before focused on security as much as I should have. Probably because all the information was not readily available in a single easy-to-digest book until this one. I'm really glad I found this book.
Serious, well-written, should be on your reading list.......2005-10-25
One of the great attractions of PHP is that it's easy to learn, and you can use it to build interactive websites in next to no time. Just like learning to drive a car, though, early success can lead to over-confidence. This book is a timely reminder of the pitfalls that lie in wait not only for the unwary, but also for the more experienced PHP programmer.
In keeping with the title, "Pro PHP Security", the authors address many issues that beginners may not regard as being on their immediate horizon. While some issues are advanced, it's a book that should be on the reading list of every PHP user. In addition to practical examples that deal with specific vulnerabilities, there's a clear exposition of the need to understand good application design. Chapter 19 ("Using Roles to Authorize Actions") is an object lesson in how a seemingly straightforward project can rapidly overwhelm you with complexity, and provides good advice on how to avoid this sort of problem.
I suspect that most readers will gravitate towards Part 3, which concentrates on practical solutions for specific security loopholes, such as validating user input, SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and preventing remote execution. Invaluable though these chapters are, the real value lies in making the reader aware of all aspects of security. Preventing accidental deletion of data, even by trusted members of a team, is just as much a security risk as the script kiddie trying to corrupt your data. This book takes a welcome, rounded viewpoint of security issues from a variety of angles. While not scare-mongering, it's a salutary wake-up call.

Book Description
What are the ethical responsibilities of the historian in an age of mass murder and hyperreality? Can one be postmodern and still write history? For whom should history be written?
Edith Wyschogrod animates such questions through the passionate figure of the "heterological historian." Realizing the philosophical impossibility of ever recovering "what really happened," this historian nevertheless acknowledges a moral imperative to speak for those who have been rendered voiceless, to give countenance to those who have become faceless, and hope to the desolate. Wyschogrod also weighs the impact of modern archival methods, such as photographs, film, and the Internet, which bring with them new constraints on the writing of history and which mandate a new vision of community. Drawing on the works of continental philosophers, historiographers, cognitive scientists, and filmmakers, Wyschogrod creates a powerful new framework for the understanding of history and the ethical duties of the historian.

Book Description
i Health, Civilization and the State /i examines the social, economic and political issues of public health provision in historical perspective. Focusing on Britain, Continental Europe and the United States, Dorothy Porter provides a comprehensive outline of the development of public health care from the ancient world to the modern state. Covering a broad range of historical issues, the book includes discussion of: pestilence, public order and morality in pre-modern times; the Enlightenment and its effects; health care centralization in Victorian Britain; localization of health care in the United States; population issues and family welfare; the rise of the classic welfare state; and current attitudes towards public health as we approach the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Overview.......2006-03-29
The New England Review misses the point entirely. Porter's historical overview and analysis constitute an argument about the role of biopower in relation to the state. Her use of evidence to make the argument is compelling and the scope of that evidence is monumental. Her analysis of eugenics is particularly insightful. I would highly recommend this work to anyone interested in the relationship across state sovereignty, governmentality, and population.

Telepathy not subliminal psychology.......2004-11-19
Just to clarify. I bought this book, thinking it was about subliminal psychology and communication. That is not so. This book is about suggestion through telepathy and such parapsychological phenomena.
The 3 stars is because I wouldn't be able to rate it fairly.

Two hundred years ago wildlife roamed and soared through the mountains of western Colorado. The fish swam in the clear mountain streams, and the Ute Indians followed the large herd of wild animals that sustained their way of life. Within a hundred years the white man had not only confiscated the Ute homeland but also destroyed the natural ecosystem and nearly eliminated all wildlife. At the turn of the twentieth century concerned citizens were demanding that action be taken to restore Colorado's wildlife heritage. Crusaders for Wildlife is a history of what the people did to bring wildlife back to the San Juan Mountains in Western Colorado.

A two for one deal.......2000-06-03
I spent four years on the Western Slope of Colorado involved in one way or another with some of the wonderful literary talent in the area. If there is one thing I learned it was that when Western Reflection Publishing Company of Ouray, Colorado published a book it was usually worth looking at. This one is no exception. In fact, the reader of this book gets not only a well-edited book but one written by a highly talented Western slope author: kind of a two for one deal. Glen Hinshaw spent thirty-four years as a Colorado wildlife officer specializing in the San Juan Mountains and southwestern Colorado. For most of this time he was "on the ground" working out of Creede, CO. to preserve and protect the wildlife heritage that most people associate with Colorado and too many take for granted. Crusaders for Wildlife is a highly readable history of the near demise of many of Colorado's wild animals just a hundred years ago and the mostly unknown efforts of a band of dedicated crusaders that toiled to preserve and return the wildlife heritage for generations to come. This is not your usual history book. It is better. To be sure, there is an abundance of well-researched, well-written histories of the fish and game that make the San Juan Mountains truly a national treasure. You will learn of the stewardship of the land and wildlife by the Ute Indians and exploitation by early settlers. You will learn some of the complex issues that confront wildlife officers as they struggle to balance the needs of wildlife with the changing demands and expectations of a growing populace. The effects of logging, grazing, and roads on wildlife is examined in a balanced manner and the age-old question of the possibility of Grizzlies in the San Juan's is addressed. You will also learn about Whirling disease which is threatening Colorado's legendary fishing reputation and the reasons behind setting limits on Elk and Deer kills. Yes, its all here. If you are a hunter, fisher or simply have had the opportunity to visit the incomparable San Juan Mountains and want to know about the history of the game and fish in the area, this is the book for you. Hinshaw has a knack of writing in such a manner that you feel you are riding along side of him as he patrols the mountains he so obviously loves. It's like sitting at home with an old friend visiting about wildlife and mountains and other memories that matter. We are indebted to Hinshaw for a superb, readable history of an area truly blessed to have attracted the attention of these Crusaders for Wildlife. This one is worth the reader's time.
