Fun Little Book!.......2002-11-28

I've had a lot of fun with this book, testing my own knowledge of literary trivia and using it on friends in my book discussion group. Appealing format, informative and entertaining. This would be a great gift for any bibliophile.

Where Milton, Melville, Mencken Merge.......2002-10-25

Entertainingly organized by topic, and with question lists, "Literary Trivia" is truly fun and games for book lovers.

This stuff is trivia, but Richard Lederer deals only with the big authors. He doesn't ask you any inane questions about authors who no one has ever read. That would be taking trivia a step farther than what is useful. Anyone with a decent reading list will know many of the questions, and he presents them in such a way that it also turns out to be fun learning.

What will you learn? Delightfully, nothing of consequence. Each chapter begins with a pithy discussion of what little quiz or game is to follow.

For example: in a chapter about how books end, Lederer tells us about the origin of "cock and bull stories". Then, he lists 15 quotes to match with 15 books, and then 15 authors to match accordingly. He also generously supplies the answers.

You'll ponder pen names, significant numbers, the Bible in the news (impressive overall subsection on this very influential book), and, of course, a fair dose of Shakespeare trivia.

Every chapter is succinct. Get stuck or bored with one? Move onward.

This is more than bathroom bookshelf fodder, but a couch and cola book. Teachers can use this to excite students about books. Any coffeeshop owner ought to grab a few copies as well.

By the way, yes: Milton, Melville and Mencken are in here.

Do I recommend this book? Wholeheartedly.

Can trivia really be worthy of 5 stars?.......1998-08-30

The answer is yes-if you're an English teacher who is always looking for ways to get kids engaged with research methods in the library. This book is filled with challenges that set students in motion in the library. The rest of the non-high school world of readers should find this book a pleasant diversion and a more stimulating breakfast companion than the daily crossword.

Not happy with this book. The author does not provide enough details on environment configuration, unless you use JBoss. I would stick to Core Servlets by Marty Hall.

Obsolete book.......2007-07-29

I bought this book to learn the newer concepts introduced as part of Java EE 5. This book did'nt meet my expectations, the example code described in the book has already been deprecated and just don't work on Glassfish. The code on the book may be tested to use beta version of Java EE5 reference implementation ! I could'nt figure it out.

Chapters 1-8 good; Chapters 9-14 don't work.......2006-05-27

This book was published too early. By that I mean, Java EE 5 was not finalized so the code examples starting in chapter 9 don't work. Another example is chapter 10 titled EJB Entity Beans. According to the Sun tutorial, Entity Beans have been replaced by the Java Persistence API.

Good but..........2006-04-19

The book is very good until you reach chapter 9, i think the authors made this book with a no ready version of ejb 3.0 spec's.
When i tried to run the examples i couldn?t. I prefered to start the jboss ejb 3.0 tutorial and i think im going to give just a glimpse to the
next chapters to see if something works.

It was good... until chapter 9

Too much too fast!.......2006-03-25

I bought this book to update my self on Java EE 5. However when I come to Chapter 9 and I try to run Jboss session bean samples it seems that things have changed since the moment they wrote the book. And I'm sure specification of EJB3 and JBOss will change until final realease.

I wrote to the authors but I never had an answer to my questions, so it did the experiencie a little bit more frustrating.

I learnt not to buy books of things under development!,

This amazing book has 96 primary sources - excerpts from books and essays by and about pre-emancipation Jews, discussing topics as varied as Christian and Muslim oppression of Jews, Jewish religious law, Jewish false messiahs, and Jewish education.

Some of the more interesting things I learned:

*That Christian oppression of Jews began almost as soon as Christians took over the Roman Empire. Just a few years after Constantine (Rome's first Christian emperor) took power, he issued relatively mild decrees against Jews converting or intermarrying Christians. A Jew who converted and circumcised a non-Jewish slave could be subject to capital punishment. A century later, Theodosius actually prohibited Jews from erecting new synagogues.

On the other hand, as late as the 1750s Frederick II of Prussia prohibited Jews from establishing private synagogues, and sought to regulate exactly which prayers Jews could engage in.

*Just as Jews sought to distance themselves from Christians, Christians did the same. A 300 Spanish church council prohibited Christians from eating with Jews. And in 325, the Council of Nicaea changed the date of Easter to ensure that Easter's dating was not dependent on the dating of the Jewish Passover. (Some early Christian communities, by contrast, celebrated Easter on the first night of Passover).

*The sheer diversity of Jewish customs over the centuries. Some Jews today think that the most distinctively dressed groups (such as the Hasidim) are the most "traditional" or "authentic" Jews. But a 1748 essay describing Shearith Israel (a still-prospering New York synagogue) writes that "Both men and women were dressed entirely in the English fashion; the former had all of them their hats on." (I visited Shearith Israel a few years ago, and today, hats are still more popular than in other shuls!) . Another essay describes Shabbat dinner in Alexandria, Egypt in the 15th century: Jews drank cups of wine, alternating with fruit, and did not start eating meat, etc. until they had drained six or seven cups!

*In the past as today, Jews struggled with observance, especially while traveling. From a 1748 description of New York Jews: "They commonly eat no pork; yet I have been told by several men of credit, that many of them (especially among the young Jews) when traveling, did not make the least difficulty about eating this, or any other meat that was put before them..."

*The amount of internal self-government in some Jewish communities. In 1637, the Jewish leadership of Lithuania held that in order to prevent Jews from overspending on marriages and other festive occasions, a local rabbi should "consider the number of guests which it is suitable for every individual, in view of his wealth and the occasion, to invite to a festive meal."

*The backwardness of a few Jewish communities. For example, the memoirs of Solomon Maimon describes his elementary school in Mirz, Poland as follows: "[His teacher] was the terror of all young people, `the scourge of God'; he treated those in his charge with unheard of cruelty, flogged them till the blood came, even for the slightest offense ... When the parents of these unfortunates came to him, and took him to task, he struck them with stones and whatever else came to hand, and drove them with his stick out of the house . . . All under his discipline became either blockheads or good scholars." Of course, the book contains an ample selection of essays about Jewish leaders who ensured that better contains prevailed.

Anatomy and Physiology Refresher Too.......2007-09-25

I purchased this book to use in a veterinary terminology class and I've found it's a great refresher on basic anatomy and physiology as well. The sections are broken up by system (i.e. urogenital, digestive, etc.) and really make a lot of sense. The diagrams are quite useful.

I am very pleased with my purchase. The flash card feature on the disc, is great for remebering terms and meanings. Pictures in the text book are clear. Breaks down everything in easy understandable terms.

great book only if you want veterinary medicine terms, they have a breif explanation and go by subject i.e. ears, reproduction and less by index and alphabetical ways. Though the CD has been a huge help when looking up words though it does only contain about 3,000 terms which i small in thought to how many words there are.

I am using this book to teach a high school class. It is very detailed but easy to understand. It has a lot of physiology too, so it will give you a very well rounded understanding of both medical terminology and phsiology.Covers dog,cat,horse, cow, goat, pocket pets, birds, etc.
Great photo's and diagrams with review questions in back of each chapter. Covers terms used in a veterinary hospital for lab work, diagnostic testing etc. Teachers can order answer key from publisher.
