a decidedly different tale with constantly shifting artwork.......2002-02-06
I ordered this comic book under the impression that it was penned by Alan Moore and Garth Ennis, two of my favorite comic book authors. In actuality, it's not written by these two men, nor is it even actually a comic book, but "The World's Longest Comic Strip" set to book form.
How this unique story came to be written is, in 1991, the London Cartoon Centre, a school for comics and cartooning, found itself in need of funding and publicity. And so 125 cartoonists were gathered at the Guinness World of Records in London's Trocadero shopping mall to draw the 250 paneled comic strip The Worm - the longest strip ever to be completed in one setting. The basic script was penned by Alan Moore and the illustrators were a venerable who's who of British cartoonists, including a single panel drawn by Garth Ennis. The story itself chronicles a cartoonist's trek to meet a deadline, and in doing so, chronicles the significance that cartoonists have made in time throughout history, eventually ending at a time when comic book authors are reverenced and revered.
This tome reads like no other comic book, as every other panel is drawn by a different illustrator, often with radically different styles. This can sometimes make for a difficult to follow story line, and indeed, is best read in conjunction with the reprinted script by Alan Moore presented in the back. But the story, an odd mix of humor, speculation, and cynicism, is definitely worth reading, not only for the tale it has to tell, but for the constantly shifting artwork that it tells it with.
How could you miss.......2000-05-04
WOW! I mean, the Gods of the fanboy world shined down on this book. Moore, Ennis! The two best modern comic writers out there in one volume. It is like Larry Bris and Mihael Jordan on the same team. The best from 2 generations creating great are together. The creators of Watchmen and Preacher together is a dream come true. Sick, adult fun for the whole family. If you like ABC books or Preacher, get this.
I really liked it.......2000-03-30
If the names of the authors don't mean anything to you i would be surprised you found it to begin with. This is not perhaps the best comic book i have ever read, but it keeps a nice pace and its intriguing on its approach. Buy it and see for yourself why this guys are two fo the best on the comic world.

From the Publisher.......2005-11-11
"Millions of us have loved B. Kliban's Cat for a couple of decades now, ever since we were first introduced to the frolicky feline in the mid 1970s through the now-classic book 'Cat.' Kliban's Cat is one of the most beloved icons of popular culture. The drawings and paintings Kliban created have lost none of the appeal that first grabbed us back then and that continues to grab initiates today.
"CatDreams brings together the joyfully mesmerizing paintings Kliban executed for a series of calendars first published between 1977 and 1981 and juxtaposes them with many of his irresistible cartoon drawings. A keepsake volume that generations of Cat lovers--and soon-to-be Cat-lovers--will bask in for years to come, it is the first full-color book to compile all of Kliban's calendar paintings, allowing us, at last, to keep all our Cats under one roof. ¶ 96 pages, size: 10.25 x 8.25". 84 full-color painting reproductions and cartoons. Smythe-sewn paperback book with flaps."--© Pomegranate
Dreamy, Just As Advertised!.......2004-05-16
Absolutely fabulous collection of in-full-color surreal cat illustrations that are just plain dreamy. If you're more into the offbeat humor of Kliban's book than his signature artwork, this may not be the book for you; while some of the Kliban humor is there, the focus is definitely on the artwork. These "Catdreams" are simultaneously bizarre and calming. My personal favorites are the Astronaut Cat-Napping in Space, the "Hawaiiana-Cat," with flower & ukelele on the moonlit beach, and the cats having high-tea in the middle of winter. Essential item for anybody who is a fan of Kliban and/or cats.
Love to eat them mousies . . ........2003-10-19
When I was a grad student and T.A. in the '70s, I had on the wall of my office Kliban's "Love to eat them mousies" poster, which frequently caused passersby to stop in for a closer look. Some laughed while others just shook their heads -- which is pretty much how people have always reacted to what I regard as one of the slyest, most consistently funny cartoon artists around. While he did a lot of terrific non-cat drawings, it's for those chunky, funky cats that he's best known, and this collection should please his many fans. They're all here, too: Cats in red basketball shoes and cowboy boots, cats walking their dogs, cats pursuing mice on cross-country skis, cats feeding wieners to the birds in the park, sumo cats, cats enjoying sushi, disorganized cats competing with mice in outrigger canoes, cats playing Dixieland, cats trying on fashionable tail covers in a cat clothing store, cats painting murals, cats lounging around the campfire, and (of course) cats playing mousie-eating folksongs on the guitar. To put it simply, this is great stuff from a very talented man who died much before his time.
CAT HEAVEN.......2002-10-22
Pomegranate has done a wonderful job of gathering all of Kliban's paintings from a series of calendars that were published from 1977-1986 and presenting them here in full color for the first time. A true treasure trove for any Kliban fan or cat lover.
Book Description
Emphasizing the importance of cultural theory for film history, Giuliana Bruno enriches our understanding of early Italian film as she guides us on a series of "inferential walks" through Italian culture in the first decades of this century. This innovative approach---the interweaving of examples of cinema with architecture, art history, medical discourse, photography, and literature--addresses the challenge posed by feminism to film study while calling attention to marginalized artists. An object of this critical remapping is Elvira Notari (1875-1946), Italy's first and most prolific woman filmmaker, whose documentary-style work on street life in Naples, a forerunner of neorealism, was popularly acclaimed in Italy and the United States until its suppression during the Fascist regime. Since only fragments of Notari's films exist today, Bruno illuminates the filmmaker's contributions to early Italian cinematography by evoking the cultural terrain in which she operated. What emerges is an intertextual montage of urban film culture highlighting a woman's view on love, violence, poverty, desire, and death. This panorama ranges from the city's exteriors to the body's interiors. Reclaiming an alternative history of women's filmmaking and reception, Bruno draws a cultural history that persuasively argues for a spatial, corporal interpretation of film language.

Scott Kelby is both funny and generous. His wry sense of humor doesn't get in the way of the hundreds of nifty techniques in this new collection of Down & Dirty Tricks. In fact, when you first flip quickly through the book, gobbling up all the creative ideas and timesaving tips, his sly jokes only add to the I've-just-hit-the-lottery feeling.
Whatever you're looking for--type that looks distressed, made of gel, or carved in stone; shadows in perspective or in motion; text that wraps around a globe; a glinting starburst on the edge of an object; a logo artificially placed at the bottom of a pool; or a starry sky created in an instant--just about every trick is here. And most are done in 10 steps or less. Also, each page has a Quick Tip sidebar (there're over 200 of them) that are worth the price of the book alone, with everything from getting better results from your eyedropper tool (click on Options and change the Point Sample to "3 by 3 average") to the quickest way to change units of measurement (the secret is in the Info palette).
The book has been updated since the previous edition with mostly new illustrations, many new and better ways to perform the same tricks, and a few completely new ones. Project files and images can be downloaded from the book's companion Web site at downanddirtytricks.com. Although aimed at experienced Photoshop users, the text is detailed enough for readers of all levels. For example, steps like "make a copy of that layer by dragging it to the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette" or "press the letter m to switch to the Rectangular Marquee tool" are repeated in full whenever a trick calls for them. This not only helps beginners, it allows all readers to hop around the book and be able to carry out any trick in any order. Yet another reason this book could've been titled Speedy Down & Dirty Tricks. --Angelynn Grant
Book Description
Updated for the latest version of Photoshop, Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks is packed cover to cover with step-by-step tutorials on the coolest Photoshop 7 effects. The book is not another rehash of masking, pixels, and file formats or resolution--it's nothing but the cool stuff that will make your client's (or boss's) jaw drop.

For a graphic designer, not a photographer.......2007-09-18
This is an excellent book for an advertiser or graphic designer. There are TONS of text effects and tricks that would be vital to creating ad copy or web graphics. As a photographer, I found very little that was relevant to my line of work. So it's a great book for a lot of people, just not for photographers.
Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks.......2007-08-31
Again, another Photoshop 7 book by Scott Kelby, my favorite expert. Like all his other books, this one is informational and easy to follow. It has effects that are ones you will use when making photoshop art as well as information to improve ordinary photographs. Photoshop is such an amazing program that keeps surprising me with effects I have not discovered. This book is another that teaches us some things that the program includes. I recomend this book to anyone who loves Photoshop and wants to learn more about it.
A whole lot of content... not sure how much of it is good though.......2006-04-02
This book teaches you how to do "FUN AND ZANY WACKY PHOTOSHOP TRICKS." There's a couple good ones. But anyone who is paying 800 dollars for a piece of software isn't going to buy a book to learn how to make cool watery text. Well, maybe they are.
The book is decent.
my review.......2005-10-20
I bought this book a year ago. I did manage to successfully complete certain tasks but in my opinion, he uses too many shortcuts. Obviously this book wouldn't be for a beginner. His sense of humor is dry and wasn't needed. This book would have been slightly better if a CD were included as well as a place to download the images he used so that we may practice on them.
Learn a ton in a short time.......2004-09-16
Photoshop has a very steep learning curve. The depth of the program is daunting. While I'm no guru on this program - yet - I've found that just diving right in and doing some of the more involved applications of the program exposes you to the maximum amount of features and you learn much more in much less time. With this book, you can do some very simple things, or jump into some of the more complex, such as creating "from scratch" illustrations. Everything is presented with beautiful, full color illustrations of every step, including menu examples and keyboard shortcuts. This book is very good for the beginner, but can also be a valuable resource for the more experienced user, and can help you to become your own in-house Photoshop innovator.

Customer Reviews:
The book to have on Military Aircraft.......2007-02-28
Over the years I have bought, seen or read numerous books on military Aircraft. There are a lot of them that are very good, and in greater detail on certain planes of certain countries and periods. However ,I've never come across one that covers the subject so completely from beginning to end.Every plane of any significance, from every country has been covered in amazing detail and data. Beautiful artist drawings of the planes in flight, frontal, plan and elevation drawings,National Markings from different periods, large multi-page fold-outs for comparing similar planes from same era, charts of statistics on speed, production, large double- page drawings of cut-aways detailing and identifying all major parts,242 B&W photographs of actual planes, and write-ups on each plane which are loaded with information. The only thing that one could say that was not covered is scenes of any of these planes in action.Although many of them never saw any wartime action, that was their prime purpose and reason for funding for development;many certainly did with amazing performances. But that would take a whole other book!
I am not into the depth of aircraft as some of the other reviewers, but have been keenly interested in military aircraft ever since a kid during WWII.I lived about 30 miles from a military airbase and watched thousands of planes flying overhead. One day, while watching a formation of Hawker Hurricanes at a distance;I saw two of them accidently collide.I can still see the two planes tumbling and spinning to the ground;while only one parachute appeared. Over the years ,I've watched numerous Air Shows and it was great to see all these planes appear in this book.Of course,of all the planes I've seen;they are but a miniscule amount of those that were designed, built and flown.
This book will become a very important addition to my library since I read a lot of military history;and am continually reaing about some plane I wish I had more information or pictures of. This book will solve that need.It will be fun to see if a plane is mentioned somewhere, but not covered in this book. But;I don't think that will happen very often.
And time marches on...relentlessly!
I was pleased that the F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighter was chosen for the cover. What an amazing aircraft and as favorite of many. What a day when it appeared at the CNE Airshow in Toronto in 1993.
"If we needed the door kicked in,the stealth(fighter) was the one to do it."..Gen.Lloyd Newton, original F-117A pilot
It was as sad as any Obituary ,when an article appeared in the Totonto Star on November 2,2006 ; with a picture of this plane telling us that itis being retired from active duty, after only 25 years.
A few interesting points about it;
"It flew over Bosnia,Panama,Iraq- the only plane to attack downtown Bagdad-and Afghanistan and "reshaped how the air force looked at strategic warfare."
"It was referred to as a fighter, though its main roles were bombing and reconnaissance. It wasn't particularly fast, not quite able to break the sound barrier. But no one ever managed to shoot it down."
"First flight was on June 18,1981;after only 31 months in development.Only 55 were built, the last in 1990. In 1992,Nighthawks flew non-stop from Hollman Air Force Base in New Mexico to Kuwait,an 18-hour flight that remains a record for single -seat fighters"
"Planes are now designed to be the deliver of weapons and not the weapon itself."..Paul Cabot, curator of the Toronto Aerospace Museum.
What a wonderful book for anyone interested in Military Aircraft.
A worthy culmination.......2002-07-10
This book should be considered as the worthy culmination of the previous efforts and publications of its authors, spanning 2-3 decades. Although aircraft that many would consider as key have been omitted, the authors admit to this in the foreword and give their reasons, which I think are quite valid. Inspite of this characteristic, this book takes its place among the standard reference volumes for its category.
The Ultimate Military Aviation Reference.......2002-05-31
A must for aviation enthusiasts. I've got several dated editions of Angellucci's aviation reference books. I think no aviation enthusiast should be without a copy of this most excellent reference book. The color pictures come to life, and it is packed with relavent statistics, data, and pull-charts which are teeming with information. The only criticism I have is that after glancing through this most recent edition in a book store... it doesn't seem to have any new aircraft. The Joint Strike Fighter and the F-22 Raptor come to mind.
A Great Resource!.......2002-03-23
This book is a great resource for aviation enthusiasts. It contains some information on virtually every production combat aircraft between 1914 to today. Invaluable are the 3-view drawings of the relevant aircraft. It also contains many charts and graphs explaining a variety of topics, such as aircraft production in relevant countries involved in the many wars where air power has been used, comparison of maximum altitude, comparison of maximum range, etc. This book does not give detailed specifications of each aircraft, but a generalized description within a paragraph ordered around date of operation or design, parent country, and type of aircraft. Many color pictorials of insignia and camouflage (again very generalized, mostly only the prominent insignia and camouflage schemes). I recommend it, especially for the aviation modeler (either plastic or computer modeler)!
Doesn't Get Much Better.......2001-11-28
If you're looking for a book about military aircraft, they don't get much better than this. Starting with old Wright and Bleriot airplanes and proceeding to the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some people may complain about the lack of some more modern planes, like the F-22, but this book is a few years old. Overall, it's great.

Everything you want to know about Aircraft Carriers........2001-12-31
"Aircraft Carriers of the World - 1914 to the Present" is a hardback book measuring approx. 10in x 10in. Beginning with a chapter headed "Evolution of the Aircraft Carrier," the author successfully explains the early days of aircraft at sea and the problems encountered in providing them with a mobile, floating base from which to operate - and return. With sections devoted to explaining flight-deck geometry, the catapult, landing systems and hangars, this provides an essential lead-in to the information that is to follow.
Chapter 2 gives the reader an insight into the changing "Role" of the Aircraft Carrier. This is a journey from those early days of "spotter planes" - required to do no more than report the whereabouts of enemy ships, right through to the ultimate modern-day, mobile nuclear powered system for delivering offensive airborne weapons to any corner of the world's seas.
With the right amount of graphs, ships' profiles, technical and historical information, this book is a scholarly piece of work. It was particularly interesting to see how the speed of carrier-borne aircraft has improved from less than 100 mph in 1915 to over 1,500 mph in 1972 and how the ratio of capital ships to aircraft carriers had completely reversed over a similar period. Further changes and modifications due to the advent of the British designed Sea Harrier are also covered in great detail.
Surprisingly, few countries (14 in all) appear to have ever employed Aircraft Carriers in their fleets and the remainder of the book gives full details of these countries and their ships in alphabetical order. Here one discovers how such historic ships as HMS Warrior built by Harland & Wolff and launched 20 May 1944 and HMS Vengeance (Swan Hunter - 23 February 1944) were renamed Independencia and Minas Gerais when they eventually became the pride of the Argentinean and Brazilian navies respectively.
The plentiful supply of historical photographs throughout the book are particularly well chosen. These include everything from the earliest attempts at launching aircraft from warships prior to WW1, the only known picture of the Japanese Shinano - displacing a massive 64,800 tons and lost in November 1944 prior to completion, and examples of every type of Carrier right up to the mighty nuclear powered USS Nimitz class and much more besides.
In short, this book contains everything you are ever likely to want to know about Aircraft Carriers and I congratulate both the author and publishers for a job well done.
NM
Nice overview of the subject.......1999-01-18
I was looking for a book to give me an overview of the different carriers I might want to build models of, and this book fit the bill. The book is organized by country, and lists each country's ships by class from oldest to most recent. The book contains over 400 line drawings and photos. The book gives design info and an short service history of the ships.

Book Description
After Brazil and the United States, Colombia has the third-largest population of African-descended peoples in the Western hemisphere. Yet the country is commonly viewed as a nation of Andeans, whites, and mestizos (peoples of mixed Spanish and indigenous Indian ancestry). Aline Helg examines the historical roots of Colombia's treatment and neglect of its Afro-Caribbean identity within the comparative perspective of the Americas. Concentrating on the Caribbean region, she explores the role of free and enslaved peoples of full and mixed African ancestry, elite whites, and Indians in the late colonial period and in the processes of independence and early nation building.
Why did race not become an organizational category in Caribbean Colombia as it did in several other societies with significant African-descended populations? Helg argues that divisions within the lower and upper classes, silence on the issue of race, and Afro-Colombians' preference for individual, local, and transient forms of resistance resulted in particular spheres of popular autonomy but prevented the development of an Afro-Caribbean identity in the region and a cohesive challenge to Andean Colombia.
Considering cities such as Cartagena and Santa Marta, the rural communities along the Magdalena River, and the vast uncontrolled frontiers, Helg illuminates an understudied Latin American region and reintegrates Colombia into the history of the Caribbean.

"The practical cabinetmaker".......2007-08-13
This book is a must for "New Guys" to be on your shelf, and give you a quick reference. It is jamb packed with information! It is non-technical, practical and written by a technical guy. There are many things I have learned in "fixing things" and I come up with novel ways of doing it, but this guy is good! If you work with both hand tools and power tools, as I do, you may neglect a tool and find it rusty. Inside this book is alchemey magic for the small shop. Reversing the rusting process! Each page has something for us. It also tells me why, and if I want more, the facts behind it. Only one draw back, but it probably kept the cost of this book affordable. I'd like it to be on better paper, and have a few more pictures of what the project or technique looks like, so I can have a visual reference point.
Book Description
Clear, concise compendium of about 150 timesaving math short-cuts—faster, easier ways to add, subtract, multiply and divide. What a neat little book.......2006-10-30
I live a life dominated by numbers so anything I find that speeds the manipulation of large computations is a godsend. This little book handles the equation nicely. Its unassuming stature hides a powerhouse of mathematical linguistics that brings speed and better accuracy to a wide range of numerical problem solving situations. It's simple, clean-cut approach to finding easy solutions to everyday math problems should be a tremendous help to everyone who reads it.
A helpful book for the math literate and math phobic alike........1998-04-17
Being slightly math phobic, I have always tried to find easier ways to solve math problems. This book gave my current methods credibility and gave me new ideas and methods to try. It even helped me feel more confident about my abilities. I'm sure just about anyone could get something out of this book.
