            Erotic? Maybe. Funny? Always.

Hot on the stilettos of Patently Ridiculous comes Patently Erotic, Richard Ross' foray into the nexus of American capitalism, inventiveness—and sex. In this latest collection of actual patent applications, the author delves once again into the archives of the U.S. Patent Office to take a look at contraptions designed to titillate and facilitate.

Accompanied by commentary from the author, and illustrated by the inventors's own diagrams, inventions such as force-sensitive, sound-playing condoms and lap dance liners provide a revealing look at our issues with intimacy.

            Book Description

With his sculpted physique and brooding good looks, Sylvester Stallone remains the quintessential movie star. In this biography—based on exclusive interviews with Stallone, his outspoken mother, his second wife, and a host of fellow celebrities and friends—this most private of public figures is revealed. Frank Sanello looks not only at Stallone's personal life, which fans will find as compelling as any of his action pictures, but also at his film career, from cartoon icon to failed comic actor to re-energized action hero. Frank Sanello has written biographies of Sharon Stone, Tom Cruise, Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, and Steven Spielberg. A former film critic for the Los Angeles Daily News, his work has also appeared in The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and People.

It would be poor even if it admitted it were fiction. This author clearly does not know Sly Stallone, and set out solely to criticize him at every turn. Very poor use of "quotations" and "friends" . . . totally inaccurate attempt at "biography". Shameful way to make money off the life of a respected actor and person. Don't waste the time . . .

3 out of 5 stars Revealing, but sort of from rather low perspective!.......2004-11-18

Seemingly a panorama of the life, the work, and the relationships of the big-time star Sylvester Stallone's till he married the third. Not much praise, lots of criticisms. Quite complete in says sharing. Source of the says is either Hollywood street or streets where Sylvester Stallone is or is made to be seen.

1 out of 5 stars NOT a book for Stallone fans.......2003-08-27

This book is so full of errors and inconsistancies that I began to doubt everything in it. It made me wonder if the author even knows Sly as a person or understands him in any capacity. It certainly isn't a book for Stallone FANS because it portrays Sly as a bottom feeder and (tries!) to makes the reader think that Sly is a low-life who possesses every negative quality known to mankind. Not only does the author make fun of Sly on practically every page from beginning to end, he also quotes all negatives from "alledged" co-workers, "friends", critics, etc. Most of the "quotes" from Stallone are hearsay, not from actual interviews between Sly and the author. And nowhere in the book will you find that Sly cooperated with or endorsed this "biography". It's a joke and the worst [amount of money] I ever spent on a book. ...

            4 out of 5 stars ROCKY TITLES.......2000-03-13

I was very pleased with the book and was fascinated to find out information that I did not know about Sly. However some parts did get boring for instance I did not want to know the relationships in detail of Sly. HOwever some bits were very interesting this included the review on his films and his background.

5 out of 5 stars A really "cool" book about the most determined actor: Sly !.......1999-09-22

This book is really enjoyable, it describes the climb of one legendary actor: Sylvester Stallone. From his early teen adventures till "copland", it's full of information, fun, deep thoughts, quotes from the infatigable optimistic. Know more about the 1000 % profissionalism Sly applies when he's on duty.

4 out of 5 stars Maradona has gone to seed.......2006-11-04

In the book is a hilarious photo of Diego Maradona, with Julio Iglesias and Susana Gimenez, taken in 2004. Well, I guess it is funny. It shows Maradona as quite plump. Since his retirement from football, he has ballooned up impressively. Maybe it is sad, to those of his many fans who watched him lead Argentina to many victories.

Overall, the book has many short articles on various aspects on popular culture in Latin America. Mexico, Brazil and Argentina dominate, unsurprisingly. Topics include music. There are many varied styles across the region. Even within Mexico, for example, there are differences. Like the nortena sound out of Monterrey. TV and the ever-present telenovelas are another major cultural focus. Very much a mass media.

The text also discusses the written word and major writers. A somewhat more specialised appeal within those countries.

3 out of 5 stars Toadkiller Dawg says: "A decent dungeon crawl".......2000-01-14

Masters of Eternal Night is the second in a trilogy of illithid-themed adventures. Like most trilogies, the middle story isn't much more than a quick set-up for the finale and this game module fits the mold.

MOEN starts with the PCs being told where to go, what to do and how to do it by an unknown entity and, much like the first installment in the series, this lead-by-the-nose approach is its major failing. The overall story line isn't particularly strong or even complicated. In search of a world-saving artifact, the PCs must travel to a remote location and excavate a crater that holds the ruins of an ancient illithid spacecraft. Most of the craft (and its millenium-old inhabitants) has been preserved by time-stopping technology, so the quest becomes a series of dungeon crawls as the PCs dig up and explore the thirteen seperate sections of wreckage while having to contend with sporadic attacks by illithid bounty hunters and their human thralls slavers in one of the few sub-plots.

Like its predecessor, MOEN sets a strong tone of oppressive gloom as the PC's world begins to die around them. With an alien spacecraft, psionics and various technological items in the story, MOEN has a strong bent toward sci-fi/horror and away from the more traditional swords and sorcery type of fantasy. The wintry setting is an unusual change of pace.

MOEN is a decent value, but it subject matter is somewhat specialized. It could be reworked as a stand-alone module, but probably is best used in conjuction with the other adventures in the trilogy. This is also a save-the-multiverse kind of plot that GMs might have difficulty integrating into an existing campaign, though the product does give several alternate starting points and, more importantly, suggestions for what to do if the PCs-ahem, fail and destruction of the campaign universe is imminent. While this product is better than many three-star modules, including A Darkness Gathering, it does fall short of deserving a four-star grade.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome link in an Anwesome Trilogy.......1999-08-27

Wow, what a great adventure. Having just read the previous review, I have to wonder if we read the same module. Masters of Eternal Night combines an epic journey with the chance to aid desperate refugee-rebels struggling against illithid domination, and finally, a good-old dungeon crawl with an innovative twist. If successful, the heroes find a relic of the illithid empire long vanished, and what a rush that is!

I can't reccomend this adventure (and the next one, Dawn of the Overmind) enough.

In this vehicle to boost sales of The Illithiad, players once again are spectators to Bruce's story. Nothing they do will affect the outcome.

              Book Description

Reliable, flexible, and configurable enough to solve the mail routing needs of any web site, sendmail has withstood the test of time, but has become no less daunting in its complexity. Even the most experienced system administrators have found it challenging to configure and difficult to understand. For help in unraveling its intricacies, sendmail administrators have turned unanimously to one reliable source--the bat book, or sendmail by Bryan Costales and the creator of sendmail, Eric Allman. Now in its third edition, this best-selling reference will help you master the most demanding version of sendmail yet. The new edition of sendmail has been completely revised to cover sendmail 8.12--a version with more features and fundamental changes than any previous version of the Unix-based email routing program. Because the latest version of sendmail differs so significantly from earlier versions, a massive rewrite of this best-selling reference was called for. The book begins by guiding you through the building and installation of sendmail and its companion programs, such as vacation and makemap. These additional programs are pivotal to sendmail's daily operation. Next, you'll cover the day-to-day administration of sendmail. This section includes two entirely new chapters, "Performance Tuning" to help you make mail delivery as efficient as possible, and "Handling Spam" to deal with sendmail's rich anti-spam features. The next section of the book tackles the sendmail configuration file and debugging. And finally, the book wraps up with five appendices that provide more detail about sendmail than you may ever need. Altogether, versions 8.10 through 8.12 include dozens of new features, options, and macros, and this greatly expanded edition thoroughly addresses each, and provides and advance look at sendmail version 8.13 (expected to be released in 2003). With sendmail, Third Edition in hand, you will be able to configure this challenging but necessary utility for whatever needs your system requires. This much anticipated revision is essential reading for sendmail administrators.

2 out of 5 stars This is more like a reference manual.......2006-03-02

This book probably covers most information regarding Sendmail but is not meant for someone trying to learn how to configure sendmail. Most chapters have a small introduction and then go on to explain each feature/aspect in detail. For a beginner, it is difficult to connect the dots (features) and understand how to configure / run sendmail.

If you take care of Sendmail servers, you should have this book. I've been using this application for almost 10 years, and I still learn new things all the time, and this book is primarily where I get my answers. Highly recommended.

I admire O'Reilly books for their uncanny ability to hook me into a lot of advance technologies. I desperately need to get a handle on sendmail for basic configuration, so naturally I come to O'Reilly.

I investigated this book several times, and though it looks like a great awesome and essential reference, it simply does nothing for those trying to get off the ground. I think it is only for advanced and seasoned sendmail administrators, but for those trying to get a handle on sendmail, this is not the book.

In contrast, I have books on postfix and exim mail systems by O'Reilly and these books are decent in getting you started. I am saddened that this is mainly a reference and not like other O'Reilly books. The book could have been called "send mail, the definitive reference".

This is a great book if you are seasoned Sendmail admin with good C programming skills. I give 3 starts because it is so hard to understand.

I've been using sendmail for 3 years and I just tried Qmail and Postfix. I have chosen Postfix because it's so darn efficiant and configurable.

Viktor Duchovni, is a great help on the online community and the online docs are just as detaild as this sendmail book.

If you are stuck on sendmail then get this book.

But try Qmail and Postfix if you can...

BTW... RedHat lets you choose between Postfix or Sendmail. That means a lot to me.

5 out of 5 stars the sendmail bible.......2003-09-18

If you are a mail admin and don't use this book, you are either doing it wrong or are a genius.

Anyone who is serious about sendmail administration and configuration must use this book.

sendmail is far to complex to be used w/o a great reference such as this.

              5 out of 5 stars Medals.......2005-10-24

I find this book perfect, it was just the thing I was looking for.
Every kind of medal is presented along with its history.

5 out of 5 stars Really is a "Complete Guide".......2004-10-01

This book provides a vast wealth of information for those with interests in the field of U.S. military awards such as collectors, researchers, enthusiasts, veterans of previous conflicts and active military personnel. If anyone has ever served in the military this will be a prized pocession on your bookshelf!

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for military, veterans, and awards officers.......2004-04-08

Since I've had this book, I've used it time and time again as a quick reference guide for the order of precedence and the proper wear of military ribbons and their attachments. The book contains full-color photographs of all the current and previous military medals and ribbons (except the four or five most recent awards) along with a history, proper order of precedence, occasions for wear, and a full explanation of the proper wear of the attachments for each award broken down by each individual service.

If you are an awards officer/clerk, then you will appreciate the full-color guide with each of these awards in order and guide for wear. This book beats looking up the official instruction for your particular branch.

If you are in the military, a veteran, or an awards officer/clerk in any of the four branches, Coast Guard or Merchant Marines, I'd recommend this book to you.

5 out of 5 stars A compendium of honor and beauty.......2000-11-05

"A Complete Guide to All United States Military Medals 1939 to Present," here in its fifth edition, is an authoritative reference work which should be on the shelves of every library--school, public, and military--in the United States. Co-authors Frank Foster and Lawrence Borts have an obvious love and respect for their subject, and this commitment shows on every one of the book's pages.

This is as complete a guide to U.S. military ribbons and medals as I could imagine. The authors describe the history and criteria of each award and provide clear full-color photographs of each one. The book also contains detailed information about the various devices worn on each ribbon, guides to the proper wear of medals and ribbons on the uniform, and much more. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine awards are all covered. There is even a special section on United Nations mission medals.

This book would make a great gift for veterans, currently serving military personnel, and amateur military historians. The many illustrations make this book a truly beautiful reference work. But more than that, this book is a meaningful tribute to the women and men who have actually earned these medals and ribbons over the years. As a veteran myself, I want to thank and congratulate Frank Foster and Lawrence Borts for a stunning achievement. I look forward to the sixth edition.

              Book Description

Catherine Bauer was a leading member of a small group of idealists who called themselves housers because of their commitment to improving housing for low-income families. In her lifetime she changed dramatically the concept of social housing in the United States and inspired a generation of urban activists to integrate public housing into the emerging welfare state of the mid-twentieth century. In the first book-length biography of Bauer, H. Peter Oberlander and Eva Newbrun trace her fascinating life and career. Their account is lively, spanning two continents, and dotted with famous names in modern art and architecture.

In the late 1920s Bauer spent time in Paris, where she befriended Fernan Léger, Man Ray, and Sylvia Beach. Back in New York she fell under the spell of American urban critic Lewis Mumford, who, as a mentor and lover, profoundly influenced her life. It was at his urging that she became involved with the architects of change in post-First World War Europe, among them Ernst May, André Lurçat, and Walter Gropius. Convinced that good social housing could produce good social architecture and moved by the visible ravages of the Depression, she became a passionate leader in the fight for housing for the poor. She co-authored the Housing Act of 1937 and advised five presidents on urban strategies. Her book, Modern Housing, published in 1934, is still regarded as a classic.

Houser is a rich contribution to the literature on modern housing, urban planning, and women's studies. In the three and a half decades since her death, urbanization has radically changed landscapes the world over. Housing as a basic human right has slipped from the public agenda, and the homeless have become a visible symbol of society's indifference. Catherine Bauer's visionary teachings about the symbiotic relationship between good housing and a healthy society are thus as relevant as ever.

5 out of 5 stars A Feminist Activist In Housing Policy.......1999-12-08

Houser is part biography and part intellectual history of the early days of idealsm and activism in the housing movement. Oberlander and Newbrun are effective in using a sensitive telling of the life of Catherine Bauer to evoke a sense in which housing policy today has lost its way despite the foundations laid by Ms.Bauer and her colleagues. This book is a must read for those interested in reviving American housing policies.

5 out of 5 stars very informative, very enjoyable........1999-10-14

This book is not only required reading for anyone interested in public housing, but also very enjoyable as a lively account of a most attractive and courageous woman. It is fun to read about her amatory exploits on her first trip to Europe, exciting to read about her successes in public life, and sad to find out about her tragic death. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in a remarkable woman's career.

                    Book Description

The Nature of Selection is a straightforward, self-contained introduction to philosophical and biological problems in evolutionary theory. It presents a powerful analysis of the evolutionary concepts of natural selection, fitness, and adaptation and clarifies controversial issues concerning altruism, group selection, and the idea that organisms are survival machines built for the good of the genes that inhabit them.

"Sober's is the answering philosophical voice, the voice of a first-rate philosopher and a knowledgeable student of contemporary evolutionary theory. His book merits broad attention among both communities. It should also inspire others to continue the conversation."-Philip Kitcher, Nature

"Elliott Sober has made extraordinarily important contributions to our understanding of biological problems in evolutionary biology and causality. The Nature of Selection is a major contribution to understanding epistemological problems in evolutionary theory. I predict that it will have a long lasting place in the literature."-Richard C. Lewontin
