    4 out of 5 stars A good, quick read.......2005-07-30

This volume reprints FFs # 520-524, continuing a fine run on this just-for-fun, no-nonsense superhero series. The story revolves around one of the FF's ultimate baddies, Galactus the all-powerful planet eater... Johnny Storm has been conscripted as his latest "herald," charged with finding him new planets to snarf down. The plotline affords us a chance to delve into Johnny's deepening bout of maturity, and to take a slightly new twist on the Galactus legend... This doesn't aspire to be great literature, but it is a fun read. Recommended!

Any one who is or has worked as a therapist will be able to relate to the humor of this book. You will be able to see your patients, academic advisors and co-workers in the spoofs. We have to be able to poke fun at what we do, otherwise we could never do it. This book is funny, but not in a laugh-out-loud way.

      Book Description

Australian Cinema After Mabo is the first comprehensive study of Australian national cinema in the 1990s. Using the 1992 Mabo decision as a starting point, it looks at how the Mabo decision, where the founding doctrine of terra nullius was overruled, has destabilised the way Australians relate to the land. It asks how we think about Australian cinema in the post Mabo era, and what part it plays in the national process of reviewing our colonial past and the ways in which settlers and indigenous cultures can co-exist. Including The Tracker, Kiss or Kill, The Castle, Love Serenade and Yolngu Boy among numerous others, this book highlights turning points in the shaping of the Australian cinema since Mabo. It is essential reading for anyone studying Australian cinema and for those interested in the ways in which land politics has impacted upon the way we imagine ourselves through cinema.

Ayahuasca is a tea made from two plants found, until recently, only in the Amazon basin. Indigenous people of the region have used it for medicinal and shamanic purposes since time immemorial. In the last century, it has been ceremonially incorporated by polyglot Christian/goddess religions springing up in Brazil and by seekers on the margins of consciousness exploration. In this book, Metzner, a hallucinogenic and mystical experience researcher for over 35 years, has compiled essays and journal-type writings from a wide assortment of people who have experienced its divinity-evoking effects--28 scientists, psychologists, chemists, curious laypeople, and practitioners of these religions. While uneven in literary ability, each contributor provides an insightful peek behind the curtain of an experience that until now has been shrouded in tribal secrecy and cult ritual--truly an adventure into the Amazon of the mind. --Randall Cohan

        Book Description

Ever since the "consciousness revolution" in the 1960s, dedicated spiritual seekers and scientific researchers from all continents have explored the world of psychoactive and hallucinogenic plants. In Ayahuasca, objective scientific information and the narratives of ayahuasca users -- shamans and others -- are presented together. Readers will also learn the pharmacology of this Amazonian plant.

        5 out of 5 stars Metzner Rules.......2002-10-22

It is rare for me to have such unbridled praise for any individual writer, but Metzner is quite simply a shining intellect - a hero among others.

Anything with the name Ralph Metzner even remotely attached to it is a safe buy. Metzner brings vitality and encyclopedic awareness to every project. An elder statesman responsible for such dramatic shifts in consciousness within this nation and throughout the world, buy his works and read them with pleasure.

What is striking about this work is the respect he brings to the subject and the well-constructed tapestry of thought contained within the pages.

Also, the design of this book is beautiful.

Solid content with the stamp of greatness. Palatable to the senses and nourishing to the neurons.

        Cannot go wrong here!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, Thorough, professional, well-written!.......2001-07-17

This book discusses Ayahuasca from a variety of perspectives: historical, religious, chemical, cultural, horticultural and experiencial. The way the book is structured it would be easy for a reader to skip over the topics that don't interest them. All of the information is presented in a thorough, well-written, and objective manner offering some conclusions while at the same time allowing the reader to form their own.

Most interesting were the 25 or so personal accounts, 3-4 pages each written by people who appeared to Americans/Westerners who took the drug for religious/spiritual purposes and in a religious/spiritual setting. It was clear, based on their mindset (objectives and beliefs) and the religious setting that Ayahuasca seems to somehow create a religious construct through which a person can work through personal issues or sort through personal beliefs. The experience seemed to have a profound affect on most of these people.

Overall, I got the impression that Ayahuasca was not connecting these individuals to something divine outside of themselves, but rather that it was freeing the brain up to explore the subconscious/ID in order to resolve problems or explore issues in the persons life.

Well worth reading if you're interested in this sort of thing.

Fans of the "Dragonlance" saga will want to skip this one. It's set in the world of Krynn, but everything else is off, probably because the stupendous team of Weiss/Hickman wasn't involved in it. Instead, we have Krynn writer-wannabes who didn't even bother to do their research. JUSTARIUS, Head of the Order of the Red Robes, is referred to as "justinius" here, and that's only one mistake. Don't waste your time.

          4 out of 5 stars A great how-to networking guide.......2005-07-17

This is very much a how-to book. There is little on network principles. The other side of that is it misses little in how to install, bring to life, and manage a home network. If you have Linksys hardware, you'll find the content directly addresses your needs; yet, despite its name, the book is not that Linksys specific.

Glenn covers four topics especially well: network security, resource sharing, tips and troubleshooting, and advanced network tools. The latter, in an appendix, presents Windows graphical and command-line network tools. It makes Windows XP network diagnostic tools available to just about anyone, even those with no technical exposure to networking.

If you just want the practical details on how to set up a wired or wireless network, you would probably give Linksys Networks five stars. I wanted more on principles.

              Book Description

Catharism was a popular medieval heresy based on the belief that the creation of humankind was a disaster in which angelic spirits were trapped in matter by the devil. Their only goal was to escape the body through purification. Cathars denied any value to material life, including the human body, baptism, and the Eucharist, even marriage and childbirth. What could explain the long popularity of such a bleak faith in the towns of southern France and Italy? Power and Purity explores the place of cathar heresy in the life of the medieval Italian town of Orvieto. Based on extensive archival research, it details the social makeup of the Cathar community and argues that the heresy was central to the social and political changes of the 13th century. The late 13th-century repression of Catharism by a local inquisition was part of a larger redefinition of civic and ecclesiastical authority. Author Carol Lansing shows that the faith attracted not an alienated older nobility but artisans, merchants, popular political leaders, and indeed circles of women in Orvieto as well as Florence and Bologna. Cathar beliefs were not so much a pessimistic anomaly as a part of a larger climate of religious doubt. The teachings on the body and the practice of Cathar holy persons addressed questions of sexual difference and the structure of authority that were key elements of medieval Italian life. The pure lives of the Cathar holy people, both male and female, demonstrated a human capacity for self-restraint that served as a powerful social model in towns torn by violent conflict. This study addresses current debates about the rise of persecution, and argues for a climate of popular toleration. Power and Purity will appeal to historians of society and politics as well as religion and gender studies.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Catharism in Medieval Italy.......2001-05-21

With exceptional clarity Professor Carol Lansing profiles the lives and underlying social climate facing everyday Cathars in the medieval town of Orvieto. Scavenging from a paucity of first-hand documentation, Professor Lansing skillfully weaves together a factual vista, based on anecdotal testimonies researched in Italian archives, on medieval Cathar life in Italy. The book is enjoyable to read on a number of fronts, above all, Lansing writes in a factual yet entertaining manner. There are a number of historical curiosities that grace the pages. Far from exercising a categorically defined homogenous faith system Lansing portrays Cathar life in Medieval Orvieto as a heterogeneous community comprising a varying and often contradictory belief system that combined forms of Manichean dualism along with Apostolic Christianity as well as strong Catholic influences. It seems there was an important cleft in degrees of religious belief and practice that separated lay Cathars from Perfects who appeared to epitomize the full faith of Catharism in docrtrine and praxis. Power and Purity is a fascinating read that provides a valuable contribution to this rare and often overlooked historical subject.

                    Book Description

This text is suitable for introductory students, perhaps in programs such as education, art and architecture. The text contains some traditional material from geometry as well as more innovative topics. Throughout the text, the authors place strong emphasis on pedagogy, hands-on model building, a guided discovery method of learning, etc. Much of the material is written in such a way that it can be used in the classroom for enrichment projects, by prospective mathematics teachers.

2 out of 5 stars fails to help.......2007-09-10

Sorry, any text book without a glossary fails its primary goal of making its information accessible.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-02-08

The book does a good job of reintroducing basic geometry to the more remedial college mathematician. It also does a fine job of introducing higher order geometry. However, the best quality of the book is its ever present agenda to relate geometry to real life situations. This helped to give me a reason to study geometry for practical purposes. Too bad my professor is a douchebag.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Geometrical Journey.......2005-12-03

This book will well serve any student who wants an interesting, visual approach to mathematics. A plethora of topics are explored including constructions, tessalations, other dimensions-the fourth dimension, polyhedra, three-dimensional symmetry, spiral growth, shape, graph theory, and topology.
All topics are presented, for the most part, in an intuitive, visual manner making it much easier for the average reader to grasp the concepts being presented. Students are required to analyze patterns thereby enhancing their analytical and visualization skills. Each chapter is presented in a stand alone manner. The book is well written and replete with numerous high quality drawings. The text would well serve
any instructor who is presenting a course for liberal arts students, a course in mathematics for teachers, or an enrichment course for high school students. The book would also provide an excellent, self-study guide for high school students who are interested in a gentle guide to mathematics outside the standard high school: algebra, plane geometry, and pre-calculus curriculum. An excellent and extensive biography is provided for the reader who wants to delve deeper into any of the many topics covered in the text. Overall, an excellent introductory text to the many facets of geometry.

                    Book Description

This book explains the structure of the 9 regular solids, including the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron, plus many semiregular solids. It demonstrates how they can be used to explain mathematics visually rather than by symbol systems, and includes instructions for constructing cardboard models. Over 300 illustrations. 1971 edition.

4 out of 5 stars Quite charming book on polyhedra.......2006-11-23

This book illustrates many beautiful ideas through photographs of paper models with concise commentary. First the regular polyhedra, of course, followed by variations of the models that brings out their duality and symmetry properties. We also study how the regular polyhedra can be compounded, inscribed in each-other, and pasted together along a common cross-section ("when halves of the Platonic solids having the same cross-sections come together, monsters are born"). We also study truncating the regular polyhedra to obtain the semi-regular polyhedra, stellating to obtain non-convex regular solids, and faceting to obtain non-convex semi-regular polyhedra. There is a deplorably short but somewhat useful section with practical advice on building models. "Suitable cardboard is of the sort used for mounting photographs, and suitable glue is a 'white glue' of the sort exemplified by 'Elmer's Glue-all' ... For several hours the joints remain sufficiently flexible to permit adjustment of the dihedral angle". It's a pity that we are advised to construct the sides of the regular polyhedra by unromantic means; equilateral triangles are to be made using "a draftsman's 30-60-90 triangle" and the construction of a regular pentagon "requires a guide made of heavier cardboard, such as an illustration board, with two edges meeting at the desired angle"---obviously you will want to construct the faces using ruler-and-compass constructions.

                    5 out of 5 stars Little Gem.......2002-01-19

Alan Holden must be a very dedicated man. This short book on polyhedra is filled with pictures of intricate paper models, all made by the author. In the final section, showing how to construct similar models, one can see a photo of his workshop with hundreds of models arrayed neatly on shelves behind him. This book was clearly a work of love.

Most of the book is occupied with a treatment of regular and semiregular polyhedra, prisms and antiprisms. These are examined in some depth--for example, all nine regular polyhedra are constructed. The last fifty pages introduce other topics, such as packing, lattices, and knots; the treatment here is very brief, somewhat disappointing and leaving a desire for more depth. The same can be said of the final section, on construction--Holden gives general guidelines but leaves the reader to compute the dimensions of all the faces of his models himself.

The prose is clear and concise, rare for a mathematics book. But the real substance lies in the photographs of polyhedra models. These are contructed in such a way that it is always easy to see the details of the solid: faces of different shapes are made of different shades of paper, complicated models are shown in intermediate stages of construction, polyhedra to be compared (such as duals) are shown as individuals and interpenetrating. The great icosidodecahedron photo on page 112 (or its companion that might go by the same name on page 98) is almost worth the price of the book by itself.

This is not a rigorous treatment of the subject, but it is a beautiful one.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Archimedean Star Polyhedra.......2001-02-14

This well-made and inexpensive book is brim-full of pictures of Alan Holden's models of polyhedra. It is a book for the hobbyist and the enthusiastic closet Pythagorean, more than it is for the professional mathematician. It is especially useful as an introduction to Archimedean star polyhedra, which are surely as beautiful as anything in geometry, and which were not fully catalogued until the 1950s.

If you find this material as compellingly fascinating as I do, you may want to follow up this book with these two:

"Polyhedron Models," by Magnus Wenninger, has a more thorough and systematic treatment of the Archimedean star polyhedra than Holden's book. These include some incredibly complicated models of "snub" star polyhedra -- spectacular stuff that is not included here. (On the other hand, Wenninger's book costs a good deal more.)

"Regular Polytopes," by H.S.M. Coxeter, is an elegantly written introduction to polyhedra in 3 and 4 dimensions. Coxeter himself wrote the first systematic treatment of the Archimedean star-polyhedra, and helped to discover the last few in the process. This book's illustrations are nowhere near as nice as the other ones', but this is balanced by its more rigorous mathematical treatment of the theme. Somebody needs to come up with a better way (using computer graphics?) to illustrate higher-dimensional polyhedra. In the meantime, this inexpensive book is the best I know on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, simple and elegant book on polyhedra.......1998-11-01

A friend of mine lent me this book in 1975. (I still haven't given it back). Although this 200 page book is very simply and clearly written, I have never been able to sit down and read it from start to finish. Each part I read makes me stop and contemplate. After 24 years I still find new things in it! The book starts out describing the five Platonic solids. Next it explores the dualities: between the octahedron and cube, between the dodecahedron and icosohedron, and between the tetrahedron with itself. Holden talks about solids discovered by Kepler and Poinsot, space filling solids other than the cube, Nolids, lattices and a whole lot more. He also describes how to make your own models with cardboard and Elmers' glue. Doug Kendall's photographs of Holden's models are very pleasing. This is my favorite book.
