        Book Description

Childhood is...well, it is amazing -- whether we are talking about being a child or raising a child. What better and funnier way could there be to look at the whole shebang than to have the art and wit of a pretty incredible group of former children, the cartoonists of The New Yorker? Just imagine the different perspectives on childhood from artists like Gahan Wilson, George Price, Roz Chast, Jack Ziegler, George Booth, Leo Cullum, William Hamilton, and Edward Koren.

Robert Mankoff has culled the best of the hundreds and hundreds of cartoons on kids from the 65,000+ cartoons in The New Yorker's archives. And, as always, he brings us wonderful cartoons and surprises from both famous cartoonists and relative unknowns. As a special bonus, the inimitable Roz Chast introduces this collection.

Whether the reader has children or is still a kid at heart, this is child's play!

        5 out of 5 stars SO funny.......2007-03-16

We've had this book for 4 1/2 years (someone with a wry sense of humor gifted it to us when our daughter was born) and it still makes us laugh everytime we flip it open. It's a great gift for new parents or for someone who marries into an existing family with young kids.

4 out of 5 stars THERE IS NOTHING LIKE HONESTY FROM A KID!.......2001-12-07

Kids really do say outlandish things! They have a knack for making an honest comment at the most inopportune time. The cartoons depicted here are so true to life that parents, particularly, will be able to relate only too well to what these kids have to say. Each page is filled with plenty of chuckles and laughs that are sure to remind you of things your own child has said in years gone by. The best qualities of the book are the realism and candid honesty which comes so openly from the mouth of a child.

5 out of 5 stars Warning: World-Class Guffaws, Chuckles, and Belly Laughs!.......2001-09-17

Before reviewing this book, let me note that the cartoons contain several examples of foul language. If such things offend you, skip those pages or the book.

I have read all of The New Yorker collections of subject-oriented cartoons, and found this collection to be by far the funniest one! The average quality of each cartoon is unusually good, as well. While many of the other collections either lack introductions or have limited, lame ones, this collection is anchored by a superb introduction.

As Roz Chast points on in her witty, illustrated introduction, "kids actually do say the darndest things." So do their parents. Ms. Chast's introduction is the best one I have ever read for a book of cartoons. She touches on the subject from the perspective of having been a child, reading The New Yorker for the cartoons as a child, being a cartoonist looking for ideas, and as a parent. She sees the family as a Bottomless Pit. You will learn the details about the day she threw a hot dog and said an off-color word The volume contains 11 cartoons by her among the 126 in the book.

The volume has an appropriately heavy dose of the brilliant work of Robert Weber (14), Barbara Smalls (8), Lee Lorens (7), and Jack Ziegler (7).

The humor typically builds by having kids saying what adults would, or vice versa. Other themes include having grown-up children speaking as though they were still 2 or 3, and anthropomorphizing animals with human speech. Some of the best work well simply with the gag lines . . . and then are enhanced by the cartoon. My favorite example of this is "I guess we'd be considered a family. We live together, we love each other, and we haven't eaten the children yet." The cartoon shows lots of guppies swimming a fish bowl.

Some of the humor is bittersweet, especially when it touches on divorce. Two small children in nursery school are working at a table. One turns to the other and asks, "So, what's your custody deal?"

Some of the most original offerings are those that take a female perspective where many will not have considered before. For instance, a mother and young daughter are looking out of an office window at a factory. "Someday, sweetheart, all of this will belong to your ex-husband and his attorney." In another one, a little girl tells her father, "I love you too, Daddy, but it just kills me that you're a man."

Parents also turn themselves in for their follies. A child is reading and looks over at his father watching television and asks, "Dad, can you read?"

One of the up-to-date offerings has a child annoying his father wondering when they will get there. But the twist is that the child is asking his questions from the back seat of an SUV using a cell phone.

Parent-teacher communications are hysterically translated. "Creative" becomes "Not too bright." "He's doing fine" becomes "What's your kid's name again?"

After you finish enjoying this fine volume, I suggest that you think about how you can relieve the stress you feel with your family with laughter!

Look for the humor in every situation. Laughter is good for you!

              Book Description

"Classical works have for us become covered with the glassy armor of familiarity," wrote Victor Shklovsky in 1914. Here Kristin Thompson "defamiliarizes" the reader with eleven different films. Developing the technique formulated in her Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible (Princeton, 1981), she clearly demonstrates the flexibility of the neoformalist approach. She argues that critics often use cut-and-dried methods and choose films that easily fit those methods. Neoformalism, on the other hand, encourages the critic to deal with each film differently and to modify his or her analytical assumptions continually. Thompson's analyses are thus refreshingly varied and revealing, ranging from an ordinary Hollywood film, Terror by Night, to such masterpieces as Late Spring and Lancelot du Lac. She proposes a formal historical way of dealing with realism, using Bicycle Thieves and The Rules of the Game as examples. Stage Fright and Laura provide cases in which the classical cinema defamiliarizes its own conventions by playing with audience expectations. Other chapters deal with Tati's Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot and Play Time and Godard's Tout va bien and Sauve qui peut (la vie). Although neoformalist analysis is a rigorous, distinctive approach, it avoids extensive specialized vocabulary and esoteric concepts: the essays here can be read separately by those interested in the individual films. The book's overall purpose, however, goes beyond making these particular films more accessible and intriguing to propose new ways of looking at cinema as a whole.

                Book Description

The Lindbergh Syndrome: Heroes and Celebrities in a New Gilded Age explores the political, media, and cyclical forces that converged at the moment Charles Lindbergh landed a tiny plane, Spirit of St. Louis, at Le Bourget Field in Paris in 1927. It asks, "Why did Lindbergh, a reluctant hero to begin with, become the most charismatic personality of his era, against his will, merely for what he regarded as a scientific accomplishment? Why, in the starkest contrast, did Neil Armstrong, upon returning from the 1969 moon landing, become an anonymous citizen, who at all times has been granted the privacy Lindbergh was denied?" The Lindbergh Syndrome is presented here as a societal ailment. Even as we ask, "Where have all our heroes gone?" we at once indulge in what Mark Twain in 1873 first identified as Gilded Age conceits...frivolousness, laissez-faire economic policies, anti-intellectualism, and public gullibility toward business and government malfeasance. Because Gilded Ages lead to cynicism and social decay, this book hopes its modest goal of calling attention to their existence will help American citizens avoid them in the future...and in the process, be able once again to recognize the difference between a hero and a celebrity.

                5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2005-12-13

Breezy writing and plenty of savvy observation about the way media creates heroes, and why some make the cut while others with perhaps more noteworthy credentials do not. Far from a stale history lecture, Mills writes in a very engaging easy-to-read style and peppers the books with thought-provoking commentary. This one was quite a find!

                Book Description

From Minnesota Fats to Fast Eddie, pool has always been associated with a fringe scene. Not anymore. More than 30 million Americans--men and women--play pool. EPSN covers the professional men's and women's billiards tour nightly, and the sales of pool tables has skyrocketed in the last five years.

Shooting Pool documents this hot sport, from the slick, exclusive, upscale rooms that are popping up all over the country to the magic of the fast-disappearing funky pool halls of yesterday, from the glamorous women's professional tour and its televised matches to the tavern leagues of northern California. Text by pool expert Mike Shamos and evocative black-and-white and color photographs by George Bennett highlight it all, as well as the current crop of top American players, the legendary older hustlers, and the places to play. They explore the life of the professional player and offer lessons on perfecting the game.

5 out of 5 stars Great survey of post-Color of Money pool in America.......2003-08-20

"To play billiards well," quipped Charles Roupell, "is a sign of an ill-spent youth." That image of vice, hustling, and threat to the community used to be a large part of the average American's perception of pool. Then in 1986, The Color of Money came along and revitalized the game and ushered in a new era. It's this era, in all its impressiveness and diversity, that Shamos and Bennett survey.

Shamos is among pool's most accomplished historians, and his knowledge of the game shines brightly in this book. He introduces us to a selection of people who have contributed immensely to the game, takes us on a tour of some of America's classiest and most unique pool and billiard rooms, outlines women's and men's professional pool, and closes with a look at the state of the pool industry.

The life of the book is Bennett's photography. Bennett's lens never fails to bring a sense of animation to the stills and to put us in the moment. Much like buying a better stereo and rediscovering your CDs, Bennett reintroduced me to the image of this game that I've played since childhood.

                3 out of 5 stars Great Photos.......2001-11-13

This book is full of great pictures of pool rooms past and present. Lots of room and player info. Very polished publication. Inetersting for those, like myself, interested in the sport and history. Not an instructional book; but definately worth the price and time to enjoy.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product!.......2007-03-15

Finally - a product that allows for simultaneous booting of several operating systems.

I am absolutely very happy about this product. Not only does it allow me to do application software testing efficiently, but also allows me to practice for my Networking / MCP, MCSA certifications.

Now I won't have to build any more PCs - I can have a virtual laboratory using one PC.

5 out of 5 stars Nice guide for VMWare Workstation.......2007-01-24

We are using this as our textbook in the operating systems class I am currently taking although it's a user guide and not a textbook. VMWare is not that difficult and if you are computer literate, you won't need this. If you do want / need a VMWare reference, this is definitely the one to have.

                  3 out of 5 stars Cost $28 to buy a manual.......2006-08-10

                  1. It is just a manual, not a text book that you want to learn more.
                  2. I don't think we need to spend $28 to buy a manual. Too Much!!
                  3. Easy installation if you follow the instruction from the book.

5 out of 5 stars Superior book on a superior product .......2006-04-20

When it comes to virtual computers installed on one physical computer nobody does it quite as well as VMWare. Version 5 of their workstation product is a significant improvement over earlier versions with easier installation, better discovery of available hardware, and many other features. While it is easy enough to install a basic system and the software pretty much installs itself the documentation of VMWare has always been lacking. This book fills that void by supplying a superb manual to match the superb software product. The author takes a kind of quick start approach as he goes through installation and upgrading, and then moves straight to creating a virtual machine so you can get working with it right away. From there he moves to some of the more advanced features such as working with snapshots, cloning a virtual machine, and working with teams. This is followed by a section on networking virtual machines, performance tuning, and optimization. He even includes an excellent section on tips and tricks. If you have the need for more than one operating system installed on your computer or just want to work with more than one then virtual machines is the easiest way to go about it. No rebooting and working in just one system at a time like a dual-boot configuration, you just run them both at once and switch back and forth as needed. And it will support more than just two virtual machines running at the same time. The VMWare Workstation 5 Handbook is highly recommended to anyone interested in the VMWare product.

                  5 out of 5 stars A real time saver.......2005-11-04

The VMWare Workstation 5 Handbook (Networking & Security) (Paperback) by Steven S. Warren
                  ISBN: 1584503939
For someone who does not like to go through a lot of options and help pages to find the answer this book is a real time saver. Most users will find that this book covers all their queries and then some. The author strikes a right balance in satisfying both the dorks and the nerds amongst us with the depth and breath of the topics covered.
VMWare provides excellent online documentation but then why would one buy this book and why is this book so popular? The main reason is that the author has realised that people using VMWare have a very real need to learn to do things fast and be done with the installation and configuration and get on with testing their software in a distributed enviornment.
Steven S. Warren is a Senior Technical Consultant for The Ultimate Software Group and was named a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP).
I give this book 5 stars on a scale of 5, 5 being the highest. I strongly recommend this book.

                    Book Description

Unavailable for several years, Virginia Hamilton’s award-winning companion to The People Could Fly traces the history of slavery in America in the voices and stories of those who lived it. Leo and Diane Dillon’s brilliant black-and-white illustrations echo the stories’ subtlety and power, making this book as stunning to look at as it is to read.

“There is probably no better way to convey the meaning of the institution of slavery as it existed in the United States to young readers than by using, as a text to share and discuss, Many Thousand Gone.”

The purpose of the book Many Thousand Gone by Virginia Hamilton is to teach others about the many struggles slaves went through and how some people were kind hearted enough to help.

Virginia intended this book for many audiences. She wanted everyone to know about the slavery times.

This book has many stories from the beginning to when slaves were brought over from Africa, to Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and when the Union enlisted black troops.

I would recommend this book to anyone because it is very informative, interesting, and thorough in its descriptions in what slaves went through.

An excellent collection of stories of early African Americans, Many Thousand Gone begins with the first slaves arriving in the United States in 1619 and goes through the close of the Civil War and the end of slavery. Each chapter relates an easy to read account of people who represent the events surrounding slavery, particularly during the 1800s. Accounts of escapes along the Underground Railroad are included as well as the stories of individuals who played a significant part of black history. These include Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, Soujourner Truth, and many others. All in all, this book was a joy to read and very informative.

                          Book Description

Genetic Programming II extends the results of John Koza's ground-breaking work on programming by means of natural selection, described in his first book, Genetic Programming. Using a hierarchical approach, Koza shows that complex problems can be solved by breaking them down into smaller, simpler problems using the recently developed technique of automatic function definition in the context of genetic programming.

Where conventional techniques of machine learning and artificial intelligence fail to provide an effective means for automatically handling the process of decomposing complex problems into smaller subsets, reassembling the solutions to these subsets, and applying an overall solution to the original problem, automatic function definition enables genetic programming to define useful and reusable subroutines dynamically. Koza illustrates this new technique by showing how it solves (or approximately solves) a variety of problems in Boolean function learning, symbolic regression, control, pattern recognition, robotics, classification, and molecular biology.

In each example, the problem is automatically decomposed into subproblems; the subproblems are automatically solved; and the solutions to the subproblems are automatically assembled into a solution to the original problem. Koza shows that leverage accrues because genetic programming with automatic function definition repeatedly uses the solutions to the subproblems in the assembly of the solution to the overall problem. Moreover, genetic programming with automatic function definition produces solutions that are simpler and smaller than the solution obtained without automatic function definition.

At the Rio Summit in 1992, the nations of the world adopted the Global Biological Diversity Convention, and 120 countries have since ratified it. At present, however, the convention acts as a framework only, with little in the way of binding language or substantive obligations. The time has come for the international community to develop the institutions and obligations which will give real effect to the aspirations of the convention, and to ensure that the lofty language of the text has some real effect at ground level.
This book describes the nature of the issues now before the international community, the gaps in the Convention which remain to be filled, and the ways in which the international community can reach agreement on those gaps. Tim Swanson begins with an overview of the issues. He then develops the basic nature of the problems within a bio-economic framework, presenting the decline of diversity as the result of the development process and its management within the same context. The second part of the book describes the nature of the solutions required to address the problems, and the ways in which they can be adapted within the framework of the convention, with detailed explanations of the concepts involved.
The biodiversity convention represents an unprecedented opportunity for the development of institutions and policies which will help foster an alternative path to development. It is an opportunity which should not be wasted
