Law School For Back-Benchers.......2001-06-30
Ward's book, which purports to guide readers through law school, is a well-conceived and very funny put-on. Ward leads the reader through the LSAT, the law school application, classes, law school exams, the bar exam, and first attempts to find a job. Particularly fun are Ward's depictions of law students by type, complete with photographs.
What makes this book funny, of course, is that there is a ring -- and a bite -- of truth to what Ward writes. His humor might go over the head of new or prospective law students, but anyone who has been through at least one set of law-school exams should appreciate it.
If you started law school out as an idealist and you're now an embittered cynic, this is the book for you. If you started out in law school but ended up in truck-driving school, Ward will remind you that you may have come out ahead. And if you're the spouse or partner of a law student and you're sick of law students, this book will serve as good entertainment during the next (boring) law school party. You may as well laugh, right?

Book Description
Directed by Alexander Korda, The Private Life of Henry VIII was the most important British film to be made before World War II. This book looks in depth at this classic film, its makers and its place in the cinematic and cultural history of the period. The story of this film's creation is a fascinating one, presented with energy and originality by Greg Walker, involving negotiations with popular conceptions of King Henry, Charles Laughton's extraordinary performance in the central role and intriguing portrayals of Henry's eight wives.

Book Description
Focusing on the often unrecognized role race plays in expressions of Chicano culture, Mestizaje is a provocative exploration of the volatility and mutability of racial identities. In this important moment in Chicano studies, Rafael Pérez-Torres reveals how the concepts and realities of race, historical memory, the body, and community have both constrained and opened possibilities for forging new and potentially liberating multiracial identities.
Informed by a broad-ranging theoretical investigation of identity politics and race and incorporating feminist and queer critiques, Pérez-Torres skillfully analyzes Chicano cultural production. Contextualizing the history of mestizaje, he shows how the concept of mixed race has been used to engage issues of hybridity and voice and examines the dynamics that make mestizo and mestiza identities resistant to, as well as affirmative of, dominant forms of power. He also addresses the role that mestizaje has played in expressive culture, including the hip-hop music of Cypress Hill and the vibrancy of Chicano poster art. Turning to issues of mestizaje in literary creation, Pérez-Torres offers critical readings of the works of Emma Pérez, Gil Cuadros, and Sandra Cisneros, among others. This book concludes with a consideration of the role that the mestizo body plays as a site of elusive or displaced knowledge.
Moving beyond the oppositions—nationalism versus assimilation, men versus women, Texans versus Californians—that have characterized much of Chicano studies, Mestizaje synthesizes and assesses twenty-five years of pathbreaking thinking to make a case for the core components, sensibilities, and concerns of the discipline.
Rafael Pérez-Torres is professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is author of Movements in Chicano Poetry: Against Myths, Against Margins, coauthor of To Alcatraz, Death Row, and Back: Memories of an East LA Outlaw, and coeditor of The Chicano Studies Reader: An Anthology of Aztlán, 1970–2000.

Examines a quarter-century's worth of thinking to consider Chicano public art and its social and political representation.......2006-08-18
MESTIZAJE: CRITICAL USES OF RACE IN CHICANO CULTURE will reach college-level audiences with a detailed survey of Chicano culture and the role race plays in modern expectations of such. Concepts of race, historical memory, and community have contributed to potentials for new multiracial identities, yet most Chicano studies focus on differences and conflicts. MESTIZAJE examines a quarter-century's worth of thinking to consider Chicano public art and its social and political representation.

Book Description
When Microsoft made Visual Basic into an object-oriented programming language, millions of VB developers resisted the change to the .NET platform. Now, after integrating feedback from their customers and creating Visual Basic 2005, Microsoft finally has the right carrot. Visual Basic 2005 offers the power of the .NET platform, yet restores the speed and convenience of Visual Basic. Accordingly, we've revised the classic in a Nutshell guide to the Visual Basic language to cover the Visual Basic 2005 version and all of its new features.
Unlike other books on the subject, Visual Basic 2005 in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition doesn't assume you're a novice. It's a detailed, professional reference to the Visual Basic language-a reference that you can use to jog your memory about a particular language element or parameter. It'll also come in handy when you want to make sure that there isn't some "gotcha" you've overlooked with a particular language feature.
The book is divided into three major parts: Part I introduces the main features and concepts behind Visual Basic programming; Part II thoroughly details all the functions, statements, directives, objects, and object members that make up the Visual Basic language; and Part III contains a series of helpful appendices. Some of the new features covered include Generics, a convenient new library called My Namespace, and the operators used to manipulate data in Visual Basic.
No matter how much experience you have programming with Visual Basic, you want Visual Basic 2005 in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition close by, both as a standard reference guide and as a tool for troubleshooting and identifying programming problems.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference if you have some VB experience.......2007-08-10
This book is a really good reference. It has made me much more efficient. It has good information of the new features of VB 2005. It has several chapters on the basics of VB as well as advanced features such as generics and attributes. I would definitely recommend buying it if you are already familiar with VB and want a good reference book for VB 2005. I try not to program without it within arms reach
It says it's for the beginner... that would be incorrect........2007-01-25
Despite the perception that Visual Basic should be something to learn out of a book, despite the perception that this book gives (inasmuch as it states that the book is designed for someone who wants to learn Visual Basic .net as their first language) this hardly deals with the practical applications of the program and deals more with syntax.
If I had to compare it with something, I'd say it was like being handed all of the components of a car-- new, shiny, efficient, and much assembly required. The book was a real let-down in the sense I thought I'd be buying a tutorial and ended up with a paperweight. It gets two stars because it frankly IS a good desk reference if you have the program and several other tutorial books which do what this book had initially promised.
Fantastic Desktop Reference.......2006-06-21
Visual Basic 2005 In A Nutshell is a wonderful companion reference for any and all VB developers. With the new features in the 2005 version of VB, this guide is a great book to have by your side when you are working on your latest Visual Basic application.
Packed with nearly 750 pages of reference material, this is a great books that is written well, without too much bloat (just the way I like it). The first 150 pages cover the basics of using the VB language, the next 300 is reference for keywords, classes, functions, etc, and the 300 page or so covers the 'My' reference (VERY IMPORTANT) and other odds and ends of the language.
I love the Nutshell books because they cut through the muck and get right to the point. The size of the books make them perfect for keeping by your side, and that familiar brown coloring scheme makes them easy to see on your shelf.
If you program VB, pick this book up, it will truly make your life easier!
***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Clear and concise with great examples.......2006-03-09
This is a fantastic reference book for VB prorgrammers. The examples are great. They aren't too long and get right to the point of what they are trying to illustrate. The organization is perfect and the writing is crisp.
It's hard to compete with the convenience of the MSDN. But sometimes the MSDN is tough to navigate and it's just easier to pick up a book and find what you are looking for. And the book you pick up should be this book.
A Very Good Book.......2006-02-18
I've always missed the printed help manuals that used to come with development tools. I used to carry them around with me and browse through them whenever I had a bit of time. So I was happy to read this book, which has a nice big PRINTED reference section. There are several sections that cover various topics such as object orientation, data types, delegates & events, operators, and so on. The book also covers the new features of Visual Basic 2005, such as operator overloading and generics. My favorite part is the section on the My namespace. Cool stuff.
This is mainly a reference book. The authors did a very good job of also making this a readable book. That's a rare feat.
Bottom line: this book is a keeper, and will be sitting on my bookshelf at work.

Book Description
Covering the period from the accession of James I to the death of Queen Anne, this Companion provides a magisterial overview of the 'long ' seventeenth century in British history. The Companion 's chapters, each written by a leading expert, guide readers through the maze of scholarly debates about Stuart Britain. They offer new insights into the enormous changes that occurred during this time; not only the Civil War and the establishment of a Protectorate, but also the intense intellectual and religious ferment and economic transformations of the era. They also set out issues currently of interest to historians, such as the rise of the fiscal state in Britain, and interactions between an integrated England and Wales and the separate kingdoms of Scotland and Ireland. The volume will be of interest to academics and students wishing to keep up to date with new thinking on the period, but is also accessible enough to be enjoyed by a broader readership.

Book Description
This Companion to Shakespeare is an indispensable book for students and teachers of Shakespeare, indeed for anyone with an interest in his plays. It offers a remarkably innovative and comprehensive picture of the theatrical, literary, intellectual, and social worlds in which Shakespeare wrote and in which his plays were produced. The newly commissioned essays, written by the most distinguished historians and literary scholars working today (including Ian Archer, David Bevington, Michael Bristol, David Daniell, Richard Dutton, Andrew Gurr, Jean Howard, Roslyn Knutson, and Peter Lake), represent the very best of modern scholarship. Each individual essay stands as an authoritative account of the state of knowledge in its field, and in their totality the essays provide a new and compelling portrait of the historical conditions, both imaginative and institutional, that enabled (and in some cases inhibited) Shakespeare's great art. Including essays on the organization and regulation of Elizabethan playing, on the printing, publication, and circulation of the play-texts, on Shakespeare's reading, on religion and political thought in late Elizabethan and Jacobean England, and on the linguistic and literary environment in which he wrote, the Companion to Shakespeare remarkably allows us to see Shakespeare anew by restoring his artistry to the rich interactions of the historical world in which he worked and flourished. The lucid, engaging, and authoritative essays in this imaginatively conceived collection will definitively change the ways in which we read, see, and perform Shakespeare's plays.
Customer Reviews:
good but not great.......2005-05-21
There are a few excellent essays here, including George Wright's on Shakespeare's verse, David Daniell's on the English Bible, and Norman Jones' fine overview of English history during Shakespeare's life. But overall the writing here tends to be rather technical and flat. Many of the essays are so over-specialized in content that they do little or nothing to illuminate Shakespeare's works, which is after all the purpose of this volume.
a winner.......2003-09-12
this is a remarkable collection of informative and accessible essays that energetically lay out the intellectual, social, and material contexts in which Shakespeare's plays were written, performed, and ultimately read. This is what students and readers need to know, rather than some critic telling them what to think. A must for school libraries, but good to have on your own shelves. hurray!
what could be better!.......2000-11-25
This is the book i have waited for; it has authoritative essays on the critical conditions of Shakespeare's art. His artistry is recognized but not mystified, and the intellectual and social circumstances in which his works were written and received are here brilliantly made visible. Terrific!!
Shakespeare wrote scripts, not screenplays.......2000-10-20
This companion offers original, fascinating essays from prominent historians and literary critics who situate Shakespeare not in the context of 20th-century America, but in that of 16th- and 17th-century England. No, it does not include studies of Shakespeare in film, but Shakespeare had been dead for close to 300 years before film's invention. Rather, these essays address the material conditions in which Shakespeare actually wrote and performed, a history much more difficult to write, but one that has been achieved with the greatest of success here. I particularly recommend the essays by Lake, Hackel, Platt, Howard, Knutson, Dutton, Long, Bland, and Clegg.
Out of date and old fashioned.......2000-04-15
The collected essays in this book are reliable but rather drearily written. The biggest growth area of Shakespeare studies, namely, Shakespeare and film, is here totally unrepresented. This is a shame, as the new Folger Library Shakespeare film electronic archive will only make Shakespeare and film more central.

Doesn't quite capture the imagination.......2000-01-09
Great speeches - and great books - can move mountains. This book has mountains of speeches and are all the great ones are there from Moses to Mandela. But something is missing. Despite the content matter, MacArthur's editorial contribution is too flat, too dry, too short. Compare his prose with that of Safire's in the latter's "Lend Me Your Ears". Safire sets fire to our senses, MacArthur fails to stoke the embers. If you only want to read the speeches than this book is fine. But this is not the book if you are looking for an editor who can take the raw material and then explain, instruct, inspire. A useful read but there are better.

Bridging a gap.......2006-05-12
A fascinating introduction to Information theory. And we need it too. Information theory is still unfortunately largely unknown, even amongst the generally well educated classes of society. An educated person today needs, at least a rudimentary understanding of evolution, plate tectonics, genetics and the big bang. Information theory really should be in this short list too. Campbell helps bridge this gap.
An Intro to Information Theory.......2004-06-18
This book succeeds in its stated intention of giving an overview of the development of information theory. Human beings are "decoders" who interpret information. Scientific theories are human creations seeking to enlighten. The author explains a basic explanation from information theory, i.e., that "in an ordinary conversation, information is conveyed when the speaker says something that changes the listener's knowledge."
Campbell attacks Darwin's theory, writing, "One major difficulty is that the central argument of Darwinian theory circles back on itself, explaining nothing." He goes into detail on why evolution is unscientific.
The brain makes decisions along the way as to what information it will process and how it will interpret what it takes in. "All seeing is interpretation" he writes. He describes the "editing" process of the brain: "...that does not imply that memory necessarily preserves the original meaning intact. The brain goes to work on information while it is being stored in memory, interpreting, drawing inferences, making assumptions, fitting it into a context of past experience and knowledge already acquired."
This is a helpful book on information theory, the workings of the brain, and the process of interpreting what one sees. It will open the mind of the nonjudgmental reader.
Grammatical man is also very verbose.......2003-07-23
The grammatical man has been highly recommended by some of the icons of popular science including Martin Gardner (Intellectual Journey of the highest sort) This is however a book that makes that journey too circuitous, sometimes even tortuous, to complete. For a book on information theory it is quite ironic that the average sentence in the book has brain-numbingly little information. Some examples: 'The pioneers of communication theory, cybernetics, and intelligent machines came to recognize that they were dealing with a new set of concepts and a new vocabulary unlike any that the science had previously known' Another hollow pearl 'On this issue, researchers tend to be divided along Chomskyan and anti-Chomskyan lines, some at the extreme edges, others somewhere in no man's land, being shelled by both sides' Fine lines, but vacuous if entire chapters are filled with them. Definitely not a book for the impatient reader or one with a reasonable mathematical aptitude. The book tires itself out after the first five or six chapters by needlessly running around the same Chomskyan and shannonian bushes. You (a person with a little exposure to either of the fields) would find that the same theory is phrased and rephrased in words. I do agree that popular science books need to assume little prior knowledge on the readers part, but that should not mean that a point has to belabored and hammered (eloquently...have to give him that) in. I gave the book three stars because of the the first few chapters. It is a steady boring downhill intellectual journey after that.

somewhat "outdated".......2003-05-07
If you're attracted to this book because of an interest in the implications of entropy on various aspects of life, including language and information, then you should keep looking.
This was no doubt a radical and satisfying read when it first came out in the early 1980s, but the subject area has matured since then.
I will recommend the very recent "Mother Nature's Two Laws" by A. D. Kirwan as a fine alternative.
So many insights on "things being", you have to take notes.......1998-04-28
Jeremy Campbell performs an absolutely brilliant work, linking and polishing all the important concepts about every level of the universe, in such a way that even when they are the most arcane and "for-initiated-only" in their respective fields, they become crystal clear and ebulliently alive through the pages. I actually HAD to take notes carefully quoting him, in order to preserve the understanding and the wonder conveyed by the exact writing. An invaluable piece on the uniqueness of information that is a truly unique piece of the richest information itself. A book to be read many times, especially good if you are a scientist battling with specific facts every day and would appreciate to refresh your perspective of what is the universe all about.
