The other reader only pointed out one major error in this book. I have only read ten pages in the Yzerman section and have identified four errors. Detroit is not located on the St.Clair River, New Jersey swept the Wings in the finals the lockout season,obviously not the year they won 62 games, Yzerman did not lose the Calder Trophy to Steve Larmer, and Yzerman's oldest daughter is named Isabella. Perhaps the author should stick to broadcasting and let people who know how to research or, at least find people who can research, do the writing.

Flawed but interesting.......1999-04-05

A flawed but interesting book. It attempts to be a hockey version of Peter King's "Inside the Helmet," but without King's insight. What will truly annoy fans of the game are the factual errors that any competent editor would have caught. For example, Dowbiggin writes of Clint Malarchuk's life threatening injury, but has him playing for the Washington Capitals. I am being picky sure, but how do you write about a scene no one "will ever forget" and then get the team wrong?! Overall though, the book is a welcome change from the suck up bios and transcribed interviews passed off as books about hockey.

Japan's Own.......1999-01-26

Being the World Cinema buff that I am, I always ask my friends from other countries what their favorite film from their home countries is. Whenever I've asked a friend from Japan this question, they have unanimously responded by saying "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" by Oshima Nagisa. Here in the U.S., we are led to presume it would be Kurosawa Akira, but that isn't so. For some reason, Oshima's film about Japan's atrocities during World War II resonate more, if not with most Japanese, with the younger generation with whom I interact. Maureen Turim's book "The Films of Oshima Nagisa" proceeds to tell us why, reviewing beyond Oshima's major features to include his documentaries as well. Along the way, she presents the Eastern and Japanese specific references and influences in Oshima's work rather than assume that Oshima primarily looked to the West for his inspiration as is shown in the over-emphasis in Western reviews of the Brechtian influences and the parallels to Goddard. This book also provides a solid feminist critique of Oshima's films, again with respect to what Feminism means in Japan. This book has trully enhanced my appreciation of Oshima's films and I recommend it highly.

Katrin Eismann is a great teacher.......2006-04-28

I've read her other book on compositing and all I can say is I love her style of teaching! It's inspiring and not canned at all. She doesn't teach you to just dial in numbers, but instead she focuses on the concepts so that you can then decide what numbers you need by yourself!

I definately recommend this book for any photoshopper who is serious about making the most out of his/her software.

Welcome update for a classic guidebook.......2005-12-31

I was pleased to see this second edition of the classic guide to retouching your images digitally. As always, each task is presented clearly and simply, with everything you need to know to successfully fix your flawed photographs. Highly recommended.

This is a Must-Have Photoshop Book.......2005-12-04

This book primarily deals with retouching and restoring photographs. But it is obvious Ms Eismann knows Photoshop inside and out. She clearly explains how each technique works, uses tons of very effective photos in her step-by-step descriptions, and does an excellent job of explaining how Photoshop accomplishes the task at hand. Her results are positively stunning.
I've purchased and read many expensive PS books over the years since I started tinkering with it (v. 3) and this writer is simply the best of breed. Well, I'd have to say Ben Willmore is pretty cool too, but for retouching work nobody does it better than Katrin.

Light as a Paradigm Shift in Artificial Intelligence.......2002-01-15

I am a layman- no physical science degree or job, but I have an interest in new technology applications, particularly light. Nolte's book is great for both the layman as well as the expert- the difference being how fast you will be able to read and absorb the building blocks of knowledge he stacks up (e.g; the physics of how humans see). His focus is a new paradigm of computer intelligence based on photons, not electrons- with implications of quantum leaps in computing power/intelligence and speed. If you have an interest in the power of "light" versus electricity (the 20ieth century paradigm), you will enjoy this thought provoking book. 'Mind at the Speed of Light' compliments recent best sellers like 'Telecosm'(opto-electronics), 'The City of Light' (history of fiber optics). It avoids hype but gets the reader intrigued about the future which is within reach. My only criticism is that the book and its lay readers would benefit greatly from more pictures or diagrams.

Totally Overhyped, Zero Information on the Core Topic.......2002-01-13

David Nolte may be an optics expert, but he certainly is neither a computer expert, an algorithm expert, a software development expoert nor a vision expert or AI expert. The quality of the latter topics is about 0.1%, 0%, 0%, 5%, 0.1% respectively of introductory texts for these fields.

This book gives zero information on the key topic of how his optical computers (or any other) are going to handle the topics AIs, Intelligence and Vision. (Of course this is due to the fact that nobody knows how to do it today, but at least they do not claim so).
