Book Description
This entertaining little allegory is about a town whose mayor and common council turned economic planners. They would make the city rich through taxation and through subsidies. The story is remarkably pertinent today.
The penetrating satire of the tale, its ageless truths, and its simplicity and shortness, make it a classic. We read irony from preface to finis, but gentle and humorous irony. The author is expressing not his own ideas and arguments but those of the economic planners. And he is laughing at them.
Originally published in 1909, this facsimile reprint rescues an almost lost gem, and it pays respect to the memory of its author, a great scholar and a kindly man.

Dave, the existential occupant of Blake Richards's absurdist scenarios encounters the inane reality of contemporary culture in the most original and unexpected comic situations. These independent yet sequential stories cascade like an alienated trip down the Slip n's Slide at a swingers's convention, hilariously leading the reader to the book'ss startling conclusion.

A Real Surprise .......2005-05-28
The author knows how to write and tell a funny story which is a rare combination for today's standards. Each page made me laugh and I can't wait for Richards next book. This is a great book for anyone who appreciates a rich sense of humor and good writing.
Well . . ........2005-05-26
I'm a professional Comic and this book came recomended from a "co-worker". I decided to read the book in order, although it says you don't have to, and was very surprised at just how funny it was. Any one who enjoys porn, hookers, or an all out laugh riot will find this book hard to put down. A real page turner.
Future Comedy Classic.......2004-11-25
As someone who likes comedy, how could I not try this title? The book isn't too long which seems somewhat common among works of comic prose. Turns out to be a good thing, as the pages are so packed, anymore humor might have killed me. These stories had me laughing from the first sentence - actually from the story titles! Do take Mr. Richards' advice from the preface on reading the stories in order. For any fan of social satire, this is a find. I don't know where Mr. Richards can go from here, but I know I'll want to be on the sidelines.

Book Description
From the late 1800s through the first half of the 1900s, pulp magazines-costing a dime and filled with both fiction and nonfiction-were a staple of American life. Though often overlooked by popular culturalists, sports were one of the staples of the pulp scene; such standards as the National Police Gazette and All-Story carried some sports stories, and several publications, such as Sport Story Magazine, were entirely devoted to them.
An overview of the pulps is followed by an examination of those devoted to sports: how they came into being, the development of the genre, the popularity of its heroes, and coverage of real-life events. The roles of editors, writers, artists, and publishers are then fully covered. A chapter on Street & Smith, the foremost publisher of sports pulps, follows, while a concluding chapter discusses the reasons for the demise of the pulps in the early 1950s.

Book Description
"David Wild's insights on the world of television are so acute that his articles on South Park have often been our sole source in analyzing what we have done, and what we should try to do next."
-- Trey Parker, co-creator of South Park
Showorunoner n: one who has been deemed capable of overseeing a television show or series For an enormous amount of money [Fin de sicle Hollywoodism Fr. English show--a public exhibition or entertainment or facade + runner--one who competes in a race or one who flees at the first sign of syndication.] also: Show Runner, Lucky Bastard, or Poor Soul
The Showrunners is the ultimate channel-surf through one tumultuous television season as seen by those who know the industry best--the creative "geniuses" who, for better and worse, make TV what it is today.
With candid and revealing interviews and vivid, behind-the-scenes drama, longtime Rolling Stone journalist and New York Times bestselling author David Wild demonstrates that today's real TV stars aren't the high-profile actors but rather the select few writers and producers identified by the networks as bankable televisionaries. Wild offers a riotous, informative guided tour through that TV twilight zone where art and commerce meet, and often butt heads, in an increasingly Darwinian marketplace.
Tune in As:
The trio behind Friends attempts to juggle three shows while keeping America's night of television must-see-worthy.
Paul Simms, the young Harvard-educated comic talent behind NewsRadio, copes with the death of Phil Hartman and endures a season from hell.
Renegade South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the ultimate bad boys of TV bathroom humor, go where others fear to flush.
The producers of the critically acclaimed Cupid ask the age-old question: What is the sound of one viewer clapping?
The team that gave us Party of Five takes their "Love" on the road with a new spin-off for Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Exiled Saturday Night Live eccentric Norm Macdonald hooks up with The Drew Carey Show creator, Bruce Helford, and finds out whether he's ready for prime time.
Two former Seinfeld scribes, Peter Mehlman and Larry Charles, find that there is life after Seinfeld--not that there's anything wrong with that.
The Showrunners is a fascinating group portrait of what it really takes, at century's end, to live and die in prime time.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent if fluffy.......2007-05-22
This isn't exactly the hardest hitting journalism. Like the writer doesn't offer any critique of the quality of the shows outside of the context of the ratings.
But that's the point of the book it is a good look inside the insular world of these network shows. And in that way it does convey the real experience behind the scenes. When you're working on 7th heaven, 7th heaven is the best show in the world.
the book does make you respect the showrunners and gives loads of great anecdotes.
Behind the scenes with all the tv shows.......2006-02-14
This is a very behind the scenes look at television for one full season. Really shows you what goes on back behind the camera. Aspiring for TV, it may make you re-think it. A little dated, but very informative.
An unsatisfying chinese meal........2002-07-02
As a producer in the motion picture and television industries, I found this book was something of a Chinese meal. Once you digest the clever anecdotes, you discover there is very little else of substance. There is virtually nothing about the real mechanics of running a show day to day such as overseeing the writers room or the day to day give and take with network execs. What is especially disappointing is the single-minded focus on sitcoms. There is nothing about dramatic series. Anyone looking for a serious discussion of the TV industry should avoid this glib and shallow treatment.
TV: The good, the bad, the ugly.......2001-10-14
As a person who actually works in the industry, reading David Wild's book on "The Showrunners" was pretty interesting. How many people would love to get their shows picked up and also to get a good first hand behind-the-scenes look at went on for several shows in the book was knowledgeable and I use the word again...interesting.
Although many of the shows listed in the book are no longer around. It doesn't really matter because there are people, showrunners in the book who will perhaps continue to be showrunners for other programs and to get their side and perspective on the business is good to know.
David Wild knows what he's writing about and he talks to quite a few big names throughout the book. His book on showing what it takes to succeed and how many fail in television and showing the good and also the bad is what many people interested in buying this book would want to read.
Sure, I'm sure there are a plethora of shows and showrunners we would of wished to see in this book but you do get insight from the showrunners for shows like "Friends", "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Party of Five", "Will & Grace", "NewsRadio" and much more.
Is their life after "Seinfeld"? Can the super-trio behind "Friends" juggle three "must-see" shows? How do these showrunners feel about a "Party of Five" spin-off show starring Jennifer Love Hewitt?
Want to know the answers? Buy the book!
Great subject, poor execution.......2001-10-10
As someone in this business myself, I eagerly looked forward to this book. I was unfortunately extremely disappointed. It is poorly written, with trite metaphors, images, and phrases repeated over and over again, not to mention occasional grammatical and typographical errors as well. It's too bad, because Wild clearly had access to some very interesting, influential, and important people, and the story he has to tell (about that year's TV season) is compelling (hence the 2 stars). The quality of the writing simply doesn't equal the quality of the material.
It also becomes evident that he didn't have access to certain shows - "Sports Night" was one glaring omission - and he never addresses this, which is particularly strange in light of the fact that he does mention that "Sports Night" was one of the most critically acclaimed shows of that season.
All in all, some interesting tidbits, but in my opinion not well told, and with some serious gaps. When I finished the book I felt frustrated that I'd spent the money I did on it.

Not for Beginners.......2006-04-13
I'm surprised at the rave reviews that everyone is giving this book. I have this book and I've been reading through it and it starts off fine as it has you build a simple application in the beginning. I found that promising because I've never used Lotus Notes before so I thought this would be an excellent book. The only problem is that once you're finished with that chapter, it goes from good to really bad. The book then becomes a reference manual for the different aspects of Lotus Notes. It provides no tutorials whatsoever as one astute reviewer on here points out. If I wanted this kind of reference I could have read the help documentation for Lotus Notes. This book is only useful for people who have mastered many aspects of Lotus Notes and even then its explanations of aspects like commands are dry and not put into context.

Must Own Book for All Domino Developers.......2005-10-18
Before I go any further, I have to disclose up front that I personally and professionally know all three authors who contributed to Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible (Brian Benz and Rocky Oliver, 2003, John Wiley And Sons, 1032 Pages, ISBN 0764526111). And Rocky, Brian and Richard will all tell you that I would still be the first one to call it like I see it, regardless of relationships. So with that in mind, to every person who works with Lotus Notes and Domino, regardless of version, and to every person who has ever posted to the Lotus developerWorks forum asking about good reference material for development: buy this book and put it on your bookshelf. I may approach coding somewhat differently than the authors, but that is the nature of all application developers. But this book does something often overlooked in too many technical books: it not only talks about how things work in Notes/Domino, it also puts out best practices and explanations for these best practices based on the authors vast depth and breadth of experience.
Make no mistake about it, this book is a tome. You are not going to read it like a novel. You are going to pick and choose the pieces you need based on your experience levels and problems you are trying to solve. The publisher wisely categorizes this book as a "beginner to advanced" level, a point I think one early reviewer of this book missed. In a systematic format, the authors walk the reader from the very beginning of Lotus Notes as a product to the point where even the most advanced developers can benefit from the content.
Lotus Notes and Domino is all about design items and objects, stored as 'notes'. So the authors make no assumption of the reader's experience level. They start at the very beginning by laying the framework for a simple application. They then explain the notes storage model, which is often a hard concept for may people to grasp, especially outside auditors and non-Notes people. As a reader you are then given a detailed thorough explanation of the Notes//Domino integrated development environment, and then even more detail on each design element that makes up an application. For the advanced readers, there is detail coverage of data integration with Lotus Enterprise Integrator (LEI), Java and XML.
As I said earlier in this review, this book will be of value regardless of what version of Notes/Domino you are running because of the coverage of the underlying concepts surrounding development on this platform. Sure it will not help you with the introduction of DB2 as an optional back-end data store, but that is not fundamental to the platform (yet).
There is one, to me, glaring weakness in the book and I discussed this with Rocky. The book is huge and is packed full of great content. But the layout of the book by the publisher makes it hard for tips, notes, and new feature highlights to really jump out of the page and grab you. This is not the fault of the author's, but is something the publisher should look at down the road.
A Tip for Readers of this Book
This is a book that will get used a lot and as such, will fall out of the binding because of its size. The first thing I like to do with a book like this is beat the binding to the punch. I will remove the pages from the binding and put them in a three ring binder or binders. This will make it much easier to handle and give it a much longer shelf life.
Who Should Own and Read This Book?
This book should be on the desk of every Lotus Notes and Domino developer that cares about their work. It should also be in the possession of every internal and/or external auditor charged with auditing Lotus Notes and Domino applications, so that they understand what they are auditing.
The Scorecard
Double Eagle on a long par 5 playing into the wind.
Fantastic book - A must have for Lotus Notes and Domino developers.......2005-09-02
By far and away the best (and almost the only) book around for Lotus Notes and Domino 6 application development. A lot of technical books (especially for Lotus Notes) seem to re-hash the same old stuff, often glossing over or completely ignoring complex topics. However this book has it all and it an absolute must for Lotus Notes and Domino developers.
Not for Beginners.......2004-08-13
As with any book, it's only useful if it has what you want. Like many of the Bible series, it is rated for "Beginning", but it is really for experienced techs to add Lotus Notes to their skill set. The book assumes that you are familiar with scripting languages. If you aren't, don't expect this book to help you much. There are no reference materials for any of the functions or commands, no syntax helps, and no tutorials for the programming at all. Yet most of the chapters rely on programming extensively.
Book Description
The three centuries following the discovery of the New World was a period of unprecedented global expansion, spearheaded by the lusty armies of the imperial European powers. This volume of The Cambridge Illustrated Atlases of Warfare is a lively and elaborately illustrated study of warfare during the early modern period, ranging from the European Renaissance to the American Revolution. Unique color maps and authoritative text illuminate the major military and naval developments that characterized the period. Feature boxes describe key events, important military confrontations, individual tacticians, battle strategies and weapons. Throughout, the author pays particular attention to the effects of European military expansion on the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Mediterranean. This comprehensive and accessible book about a fascinating and important period will appeal to war buffs and historians alike.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference.......2004-01-06
This book, and its companion, covering The Middle Ages, 768-1487 and Renaissance to Revolution, 1492-1792, though with different authors, form an elegant pair of references. They cover a period that is infrequently covered in much detail, and rarely illustrated with any maps, much less the excellent examples here. My primary use for these books is as aids when reading both history and, even more, historical fiction such as Sharon Kay Penman, Dorothy Dunnett and Neal Stephenson. These authors write intricately plotted tapestries that rely heavily on movements in historical time, but their publishers include only incidental maps. These volumes supply a much needed reference for readers who are not quite au courant with the 3rd Anglo Dutch War, or the rise of Maratha India. The accompanying text gives an adequate survey of the time, but the primary emphasis is `rightly on the illustrated portion. The maps are beautifully designed, and easily deciphered, covering both individual battles and broader strategic concepts.
It's not bad...not great, but not bad.......2001-12-14
This isn't a bad book especially if you are looking for a good, general history of warfare during this time period.
At times the author gets a little heavy handed with the political correctness. For example, he states in the preface how he wanted to move away from the "customary dominance by western European developments". Then on the very next page he says "it is all too easy to take a Eurocentric perspective..."
Whatever. Can't historians just write their books nowadays without having to drag all this PC baggage around with them?
If you can slog through the rhetoric this book isn't so bad.
Not for the Wargamer or Military Historian.......2001-06-25
This Atlas is too general for the Military Historian and wargamer, but is a nice worldwide historical overview. It does have some good political maps, but there are not a lot of them, and they are only snapshots far apart in time. When I think of an Atlas I think of page followed by page of maps. This book is mostly text with many illustrative maps, and lots of non-map pictures. It is not as detailed as some other historical Atlases. I do not mean to disparage this work, it is a very good, very colorful overview, and puts military history in context. It is not however, a book that will provide informative maps for the Military Historian, or gaming enthusiast. Definately a book to check out of the library, It would be a good buy as a color paperback, unfortunately I paid for a hard copy.
Brilliant and provoking.......2000-05-15
Black's clear advantage was that the timeline span of the subject was avoided by most historians, probably because it's difficult to compile into a single piece of work. But, Black have done it in a fashion, arguably, very original than most historical atlases.
The special maps and themes are divided into daunting blocks of adventure and you'll not stop until the last pages. There are new insights into the clashes between Portugal and Utsmani Devlet in and around the Indian Ocean.
Let's hope more works come out from this author, at least from the Cambridge Series. In the end, you'll wish the pages were much longer as your thirst grew unbearable.

Book Description
Testosterone has inspired dreams--of restored youth, recharged sexual appetites, faster running, quicker thinking, bigger muscles--since it was first synthesized in 1935. This provocative book investigates the complex, bizarre, and sometimes outrageous history of synthetic testosterone and other male hormone therapies. Exploring many little-known social arenas--both inside and outside the medical world--in which these substances are becoming increasingly available and accepted, Testosterone Dreams examines the implications and dangers of their use in professional sports, in the workplace, in our sex lives, and beyond.
Testosterone Dreams tells the story of testosterone's growing and sometimes concealed influence in our culture over the past 70 years. It explores such controversial topics as the invention and marketing of the male menopause, the disturbing history of hormonal and other medical treatments aimed at boosting or suppressing women's sexuality, and hormone doping in sporting events such as the Tour de France and the Olympics, and in Major League Baseball. It brings to light the hidden use of hormone doping by policemen, soldiers, and other workers in a variety of jobs. It also discusses the burgeoning steroid use in the gay community and its relation to AIDS, and takes a hard look at the pharmaceutical industry's promotional campaigns to create new markets for testosterone products.
Testosterone Dreams is the first book to bring together the whole story of testosterone and to consider its social and ethical implications: Where does therapy end and performance enhancement begin? How are changing medical technologies affecting how we think about our identities as men and women and the elusive goal of "well-being"? This book will be essential reading as we move inexorably toward the wide-open, libertarian pharmacology that is now making these drug regimes available to a wider and wider clientele.
Customer Reviews:
Bigger, Faster, Stronger... we can rebuild him....Big Whup........2005-06-17
Testosterone dreams is a thought-provoking study at times of how a drug, or at least the promise of a drug, changes our attitudes about what is normal and expected in humans. Testosterone has been offered up as a enhancement for athletic performance, sexual drive and slowing the aging process. Heavily promoted by drug companies (just watch the commercials during golf tournaments), the public begins to question acceptance of normal human limitations and imagines an improved world. Soon these enhanced expections become the norm.
I believe this is what the author is getting at. I have to admit while the book was thought-provoking at times, other times I kept saying to myself "so what?... The author should just relax and not take himself so seriously." Ignoring the point whether the drugs actually do what's promised, every invention sets forth the same process of altering people's expectations. I can't say I finished this book and thought I learned something despite some interesting observations.

At Risk.......2001-04-29
This is an excellent introduction to the concerns of religion and ecology. The volume has leading authors survey topics of religion and science, mutli-religious perspectives on the topic, religion and ethics, and religion and educational policy respecting the topic. The book is ideal for schools and discussion groups.
An important question for religion.......2000-06-19
This book, with chapters from a wide variety of scholars of religion, ecology, and science, is a great introduction to the interaction between ecology and faith. This book will be a rewarding read for anyone interested in how religion must cope with the environmental crisis, as well as those who (wrongly) think that religion has nothing to say about ecology.
