Boredom buster.......2007-03-09

I really enjoyed this book and it's what I turn to whenever I'm having a "blah" moment. The drawings are easy to follow, the writing is short and brief and there are tons of little extras throughout the book (stickers, punch outs, etc). It's more of an activity book than a drawing book and even if you have no interest in drawing, you'll enjoy the wit and whimsy of the words and illustrations. A great buy at the original price, but a fabulous bargin at anything less!

I have owned these three wonderful books since the late nineties & have re-visited them many times.

In the field of what I would like to term as 'deliberate doodling', I consider these three books to be the best in the genre. Unlike the common doodles, which seem whimsical, 'deliberate doodling' involves some form of structure & purpose. I am very impressed by what the author has done in the three fun books of hers.

All three fun books are spiral bound, each with almost two hundred pages of inspirational doodling techniques, on top of various other discovery games & paper crafts for professional & personal entertainment. Each is sturdily constructed with two pockets for special projects, organised with ten card-board dividers & yet small enough to fit into your briefcase.

From my personal perspective, they are wonderful toys for grow-ups: playful, instructive & absolutely worthwhile!

The author has actually written another similar book, entitled 'Squeaky Chalk : And Other Fun Things to Draw (And Do) When There's Nothing to Do!' but for some strange reasons, I did not lay my hands on it.

For the benefit of readers, let me share this personal experience of mine: I have combined the 'deliberate doodling' techniques from Joy with the 'rapid viz' techniques from Kurt Hanks, & integrated them into the 'private writing' processes as formulated by Mark Levy in his wonderful book, 'Accidental Genius: Revolutionize Your Thinking Through Private Writing .'

I use what I often like to term as my 'scratch pad', the type artists use, foolscape size, spiral-bound, 100 pages per pad, 100 gms weight, in conjuction with a multi-colour/multi-utility pen from Rotring. At one point in time, (for about 3 years) I used the Bienfang spring-bound note/sketch pads until the only local supplier went out of business unexpectedly.

On many occasions, I have astonished myself by being able to wrestle with the valuable business & life insights from my own seemingly disparate "private writing"/'deliberate doodling'/'rapid viz' pages. The doodles & illustrations often add a perceptive visual dimension to my seemingly random thoughts on paper. My scratch pad is always a visual smorgasbord of relatively heavy text, mystical doodles & logical illustrations (thanks & no thanks to my engineering training!). I have translated many of my valuable insights into pragmatic projects. One of the sideline projects is writing reviews on amazon website.

To all readers: If you really want to use both sides of your powerful brain to generate valuable insights, I can guarantee that these three books can drive your imagination engine into hyper-speed mode.

Delightful surrealist romp.......2006-05-15

I simply love this little book. I found it on clearance and thought "Hey, what can it hurt?" It didn't hurt at all, obviously. I love the whimsical flow and little extras like the herb labels and "postcards." It's also very informative, teaching you how to doodle things like cups of coffee, mice and peanuts, and the ever-honorable peccary. This would make an excellent gift for those who like a little silliness in their everyday life.

Get an editor!.......2000-08-16

First and foremost, this book is in bad need of an editor. If it had an editor at all, I did not notice. If this book were well edited, I'd give it three stars instead of two. Secondly, there is simply not enough here to make the book worth buying. The text itself is only 195 pages long, and the first 101 pages are devoted to a very general and bland review of the histories of the various Star Trek series. Most readers will be familiar enough with the information in the first half of the book that they will feel impatient to get to the more interesting second half, with its interpretation and analysis. Unfortunately, the author is a lightweight, providing mostly description of various episodes in the next 90+ pages. He does not dig deep, but skims over his themes, developing nothing in depth.

And what are his themes? First of all, Mr. Gregory traces the growing sophistication of the show and its audience, beginning with Roddenberry's somewhat naive liberal humanist utopia, with its ideas imbedded in straightforward action stories, and ending with a complicated political situation, its ideas being presented along with challenges to those ideas, allowing for more complexity and a more inclusive perspecitve. Secondly, the author traces the growing technical sophistication of the show, explaining how the many artists involved in the series were able to make better and better use of the television format, or televisuality, as the years progressed. The author's ideas were sound, and I tended to agree with him in his assessments. Unfortunately, he seemed to have the attention span of a gnat. For a much better analysis of Star Trek as mythos, read _Deep Space and Sacred Time_, by Jan Lundeen and Jon G. Wagner.

It's also a quick and easy resource guide to solve any normal question/problems associated w/ Elements. It's written in a very straight forward and easy to understand format. I swear I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Buy this book! These two are the funniest writers -- they should work for The Onion. I've never seen the Creationist position skewered with more brilliant sarcasm than in this book. Everything from the infantile layout and graphics, the astonishingly embarrassing poems, and the wonderfully ridiculous arguments adds up to a wonderful parody of the very sort of books these two comedians have such obvious contempt for. Their little riffs on population, the fossil record, and the global flood are priceless! Wow! John Stewart should hire these two!

Appreciate the wonder of God's creation.......2006-01-15

This book may encourage you in your own personal search for the truth. If you want greater depth of research information on the topic of creation versus evolution, there is much out there. This book is a place to start and sites many useful sources. The Institute for Creation Research (icr.org) museum near San Diego, for example, is where I picked up my copy.

I have examined the evidence and I have decided that God created the Earth without the use of macroevolution. (Microevolution, which happened after creation, is fact and is not disputed.)

I like to read this book and marvel at the wonder God's amazing creation. I highly recommend this book as a resource to strengthen your faith in our awesome Creator God.

This book is organized into daily readings-one page per day. Each day describes an amazing fact about our world and God's creation.

Jesus taught us to pray by addressing God as "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." (Matthew 6:9) I believe God wants us to adress Him with a feeling of respect and reverence, fully aware of His sovereignty and awesome power. When I read this book it makes me feel even more in awe of our God and his amazing work.

"But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul." Deuteronomy 4:29

Religious, but not scientific by any means.......2005-02-17

This book is clearly incapable of fulfilling its boastful back cover promises. First of all because a truely fact-based and scientifically accurate discussion of the topic cannot be attained without a huge load of background knowledge. Secondly because the sources quoted are by no means impartial in the evolutionary debate, but, instead, similarly premised and largely lack understanding of modern science. Thirdly, one of the main arguments presented, after stating some arbitrary "nice-to-know" item on biological facts, that "this cannot have come into existence by accident". Thus, the line of argumentation is neither impartial, nor even-handed, but simply a blunt attack on science based on the absence of the will to truly deal with the topic unbiased and in greater detail.

Simply disappointing.

Good, but not what I expected.......2005-01-22

What I expected from the description was a book presenting comparisons of evidence between creationism and evolution in point-for-point facts. A strong selling feature for myself was the comment of it being written in laymans terms. (as opposed to the scientific approach of other books)

Instead the book is actually made up of 365 (as in daily) facts dealing with several categories of creation supportive "mini-reports". Yes, these daily thoughts are listed starting with January 1st and go through the calendar to the end of the year. These extremely short items, while interesting, never go into any depth. They simply state a fact and then end with an appropriate or related Bible verse. Imagine an important event from history condensed to two paragraphs and it will give you an idea as to the "just getting started" feeling presented in this books "single page" format. I agree with the basis of the beliefs presented, but the format and lack of depth was disappointing.
