Too brief on Yogananda's early years...........2005-07-11

Firstly, I wish to state that I enjoyed this DVD about the life of Yogananda completely. It tells us the difficulties Yogananda faced in establishing his foothold on American soil. The narration is superb in quality but fails to bring the viewer to a deeper understanding on Yogananda's early mission in America.

Thus the only negative point I feel about this DVD is that it is too short and brief. The 30-minute viewing time does not justify the price of this DVD. Furthermore it has no extras or useful additional tidbits on the early life of Yogananda in America.

I could not put this book down because this book symbolized what it takes to succeed in life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for what it takes to be successful at whatever you want to do with your life.

An intelligent sports book........1998-09-17

Dryden may be the Canadian hockey equivalent of basketball's Bill Bradley. I wouldn't be surprised if Dryden becomes Prime Minister of Canada in 20 years.

Dryden studied at Cornell and took a year off playing hockey (after winner a playoff MVP award and Rookie of the Year)to complete his law degree at McGill. He won a fistful of trophies and Stanley Cup rings during his brief Hall of Fame career as a goaltender with the Montreal Canadiens. The rare combination of scholarship and athletic brilliance results in an very well written book.

The book is a diary of the last part of his final season. While light on anecdotes, it delves into the heart of what is right and wrong with hockey.

Is is most likely the best book ever written by an athlete.

This is the definitive book of hockey. Dryden's thoughts on goaltending, the city of Boston, and on the state of hockey cannot be matched. Dryden had an incredible insight on what was wrong with the game and where the game was headed, even back in 1983. I read this book once a year, it is that good.

Valuable pictorial reference for this great jewelry designer.......1999-03-18

So little is written about this remarkable designer that it is great to have so much information in one source about Eugene Joseff. The photographs recording his designs are invaluable to costume jewelry aficionados and collectors. Joseff's contribution to film-making is unique and , until now, practically unsung. Movie stills, photos from the Joseff archives and photos produced for this volume provide a valuable record of his prodigious and truly remarkable output.

Why the publisher doesn't assign an editor to clean up much of the amatuerish, gawky prose is beyond this reader's comprehension. While one does not expect erudition in a "collector book", one should not have to endure irrelevant and uninformative captions, homespun drawings and corny typefaces. Many of the photos are poorly planned, using strange props and odd angles which interfere with seeing the jewelry. The poor editing and the poor layout prevent me from giving a higher rating. But if you are a costume jewelry collector, especially of Joseff, you have to have this book.

The biggest diaspora in Vietnamese history occurred between 1975 and 1992, when more than two million people fled by boat to escape North Vietnams oppressive communist regime. Before this well-known exodus from Vietnams shores, however, there was a massive population shift within the country. In 1954, one million fled from north to south to escape war, famine, and the communist land reform campaign. Many of these refugees went on to flee Vietnam altogether in the 1970s and 1980s, and the experiences of 1954 influenced the later diaspora in other ways as well. This book reassesses the causes and dynamics of the 1975-92 diaspora. It begins with a discussion of Vietnam from 1939 to 1954, then looks closely at the 1954 "Operation Exodus" and the subsequent resettlements. From here the focus turns to the later events that drove hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese to flee their homeland in 1975 and the years that followed. Planning for escape, choosing routes, facing pirates at sea, and surviving the refugee camps are among the many topics covered. Stories of individual escapees are provided throughout. The book closes with a look at the struggles and achievements of the resettled Vietnamese.

Memories become history.......2007-04-08

I lived through all the periods of Vietnamese history mentioned in the book. I witnessed (as a child) the 1954 exodus from the North, the 1975 event leading to the concentration camps, the exodus of the boat people from Vietnam and their life outside of Vietnam. It's quite an extraordinary and pleasant experience for me to read "The Vietnamese Boat People". It's like being led on an instructive tour to your own hometown, guided by a scholarly (and surgeon) friend who writes English in a way very few of us can, to revisit familiar places that you thought you have always known so well, only to find out that there are a lot of new things and perspectives about your own past and your country's past. With the book,my own eclectic, personal pieces of memory seem to find their place in the jigsaw puzzle. It may help former refugees like myself, and hopefully our English speaking progeny, find a sense of meaning and purpose from our turbulent and traumatic past. For some of us, this may also provide some relief from lingering guilts and regrets about our past lost cause, and maybe, a sense of closure necessary to start a new chapter for our life and for our former country that still stays behind in every way.

Concise history of Vietnamese Refugees .......2007-04-06

This is a clear, readable, and concise book about Vietnamese refugees. There have been a large number of books on this subject, but this is one of the better and more complete ones I have encountered.

The author begins with a subject neglected by many authors -- a description of the refugee flight that came about as a result of the French defeat and the Communist takeover of North Vietnam in 1954. About one million people fled North Vietnam at that time. He then jumps forward 20 years to an account of the many different phases of the 1975-1992 humanitarian crisis -- and crisis it was -- beginning as a consequence of the defeat of the U.S.-supported South Vietnamese government in 1975. Throughout the narrative, he mixes in the personal stories of individuals escaping from Communism, their life in the refugee camps, and their later experiences in the United States. Finally, he describes the refugee policies of the countries who hosted and helped -- sometimes reluctantly -- Vietnamese refugees: the United States, Thailand, Malaysia, France, Canada, Australia, and others.

The author draws most of his material from previously published books, but his insights often have a interesting twist of their own, perhaps because the author himself is Vietnamese, experienced some of the events he describes, and reflects the view -- very anti-communist -- of many in the American Vietnamese community.

Good Geometry Proofs Textbook.......2007-10-17

This is a good text book. It has lots of clear worked out proofs of propostitions. Many of the exercises at the end of each lesson require that you find proofs of propostions mentioned in the text but were not proven. This book also has good drawings of shapes that explain what the propositions, theorems,and axioms mean. Since I am a student, I personally think the exercises at the end of the chapters are somewhat difficulty to figure out, but for others they might not be. If your professor doesn't explain the material well, you can at least try to understand by yourself using this text. Overall, this is a good textbook.

A wealth of knowledge of geometry.......2007-08-09

This text provides a wealth of knowledge about geometry. For me, with only a minimum of college level geometry previously studied, it was my first meeting with a rigorous development of any type of geometry, euclidean or noneuclidean. It was very exciting to see how this subject can be so carefully developed. Even though I was exposed to a meticulous construction of real analysis and algebra ,there is quite a difference in the techniques used to develop geometry, which you might anticipate.

Each time I have reviewed Dr.Greenberg's text, I am not only able to retain the material easier, but also to achieve a new level of understanding, which is kind of surprising.

This text is a treasure of knowledge of geometry, but the reader, if not much better prepared than me, needs to understand that digesting this text requires a bit of a committment , but it is well worth the effort. If you are a prior football player, like me, you will probably remember the coach mentioning it will take a 110% effort to win. This is a different way of indicating how tenacious, I feel, you will need to be.

I am really looking forward to reading Dr. Greenberg's most recent edition of this text, which is now available.

Hard to get into without a math professor on hand.......2007-04-05

First of all, I must point out that i am reviewing the second edition of this book. I'm sure the third edition is different, but i think the main points of my review will still hold.

I bought this book because i needed to brush up on my geometry for the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) in mathematics. While it is certainly a well written book (I found the historical aspects of it particularly interesting), its major flaw is that there are no answers to the end-of-chapter excercises! This makes the book virtually useless to anyone not in school wanting to learn geometry in their own time (i.e. not for a class). Whilst i managed to do most of the exercises at the end of the first chapter (at least i think i did), it seemed pointless to attempt subsequent problems as they were quite in depth and there would be no way for me to know whether they were right or not! A big improvement would be if the number of problems were cut down (seriously, it would take years for someone to finish all of the end-of-chapter problems!) and something resembling answers was in the back of the book.
