      Product Description

Legendary artist Jack Kirby first conceptualized Silver Star in the mid-1970s as a movie screenplay, complete with illustrations to sell the idea to Hollywood. Too far ahead of its time for Tinseltown, Jack instead adapted his “Visual Novel” as a six-issue mini-series for Pacific Comics in the early 1980s, making it the last original creation of his career. Now, in Silver Star: Graphite Edition, “King” Kirby’s final, great series is collected at last, this time reproduced from his powerful, uninked pencil art! Read the complete story of Homo-Geneticus, the New Breed of humanity that spawns both hero (Silver Star) and villain (the nefarious Darius Drumm), leading to one of the most action-packed narratives and spellbinding climaxes ever conceived on a comics page! And as a special bonus, read Kirby’s provocative screenplay, reproduced in its entirety, including illustrations and never-published character sketches! Plus there’s pin-ups and other rare Kirby art, and an historical overview to put it all in perspective. A percentage of profits from this book go to the Jack Kirby Museum and Research Center, so don’t ask, just buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Raw Kirby (or at least medium-rare).......2007-03-05

SILVER STAR: GRAPHITE EDITION is a trade paperback collection of legendary writer/artist Jack Kirby's second creation for Pacific Comics. A shelved movie concept from the mid-1970s, Kirby brought Silver Star to comics in 1982 as a companion book for Captain Victory. The story tells of the conflict between those individuals known as "Homo geneticus": engineered beings with the power to reshape matter at the atomic level, as well as other more frightening abilities. Morgan Miller, known as Silver Star, seeks out the others of his kind to prepare them for the coming of the evil Darius Drumm, who would turn the Earth into a wasteland.

This is by no means the best story Kirby wrote in his career; however, there's no disputing that it is big. Big action, big characters... just BIG! It's a very interesting concept that fits well with his other epic works such as The New Gods and the Eternals, but focusing on mortals rather than immortals. The ideas Kirby brings forth in this story are both bizarre and wonderful; unfortunately, the dialogue is absolutely awful, to the point of being embarrassing - that is, when it makes sense at all. It was nice of Pacific Comics to give Kirby free reign on this story, but a co-writer or strong editor really would have helped to make it more readable. Luckily, the original screenplay written by Kirby is included in order to clarify some points. While the storyline of the screenplay is not the same as the comic, it does help somewhat.

As for the art, do you even need to ask? While Kirby may not have been the best at dialogue, his art is never in question. Almost all of SILVER STAR: GRAPHITE EDITION is reproduced from copies of Kirby's un-inked pencils. The lines are intentionally rough, but you can really see The King's creative process at work. The texture of each line and shadow is clearly visible, and the power and dynamism is by no means lessened. A few inked pages are included when the pencils were not available, as well as inked versions of each cover. In addition, the story has been re-lettered for clarity.

Obviously, the purpose of this reprint is not to dazzle readers with the story, but to show us the raw creative power of King Kirby. So, while I wouldn't get your hopes up in terms of the story, the un-inked art alone should be enough to amaze Kirby fans for hours (general comics readers may not be so impressed). I'm hoping that TwoMorrows Publishing will do this with other Kirby works. Be sure to keep your eyes open for a color hardcover collection of Silver Star, available in summer 2007 from Image Comics!

5 out of 5 stars FAST AND VERY GOOD.......2007-01-12

The book was sent in a perfect state and very efficiently.

3 out of 5 stars Innovative presentation, but... .......2007-01-02

      First the good stuff:

I loved the format of the book. The introduction is informative and well-written. Numerous sketches are included. The original screenplay proposal comes along with all this, and everything is done on a high-quality paper. In a nutshell, the reader gets to know as much as he wants about the Silver Star.
Most importantly, there is the art. Jack's pencils are tight and easy to follow. There are quite a few pages of fully inked artwork inserted in this graphic novel, so a reader gets a great comparison and a feel for Kirby's creative process. The lettering is all printed in a polished and professional way. The end result of this is a peek at the early stages of a Kirby work without the reading experience being reduced at all.
Lastly (for the good), is that this is a JACK KIRBY graphic novel. I would agree that this came after Jack's prime. There are a couple sequences where story inexplicably jumps forward. However, EVERY page still contains brilliance. The art is bursting with energy. Shadows, backgrounds, gestures, expressions... it is all there and it is fantastic.
The story is a fine example of Kirby's creativity. Jack's best stories contain timeless and important themes and ideas. Both the Eternals and New Gods dealt with technology and mythological themes. Jimmy Olsen, believe it or not, had genetics and cloning in its best storylines. Reading these stories today, they still seem relevant and even cutting edge to me. The Silver Star also contains these big concepts. Silver Star also has Darius Drumm... Jack's best bad guy since the incomparable Darkseid!

      Now for the bad:

Kirby was perhaps the greatest comic artist ever. I also touched upon his gift for big ideas and grand concepts. However, having a super-powered imagination and being an mega-talented artist does not mean a man is automatically a great writer. In this work, I have to admit that my enjoyment of the art and the cool concepts (in Silver Star, Jack again dives into genetics and technology) was dampened by huge plot holes, corny dialogue, a love interest sub-plot that did not work at all, and a puzzling ending. I understand it is a comic book that isn't shooting for realism, and I can suspend my disbelief. Despite that, I still felt the storyline just did not come together in a satisfactory way.

To sum up, I think anyone really into Jack Kirby, superhero comics, or great comic art will love this book. For the rest of us, it is a pretty good ride, but a far cry for The Eternals of The Fourth World stories.

5 out of 5 stars A unique addition to his legendary body of work.......2006-06-07

Silver Star: Graphite Edition (The Complete Visual Novel In Pencil Form) by Jack "King" Kirby is the compilation works of the legendary comic book illustrator whose "Silver Star" concept in the mid 1970's was originally intended as a film screenplay but was too much ahead of its time for the Hollywood movie makers of that decade. Creatively presenting this historical comics landmark in the form of a graphic novel just as Kirby drew it in pencil and with no color inking, Silver Star presents six of Jack Kirby's original mini-series books of action-packed, enthralling superhero stories brought to life with distinctive Kirby art. A seminal event in comic book annals, Silver Star is very strongly recommended for all fans and collectors of Jack "King" Kirby's comic book and graphic novel art and authorship as a unique addition to his legendary body of work.

5 out of 5 stars Great original Kirby creation!.......2006-06-05

Silver Star was the second of Kirby's two early-eigthies comics put out by Pacific Comics (the other being Captain Victory). Though the King did comics work afterwards on licensed heroes belonging to other companies, this is considered his last original work that he created from scratch.

This edition is not just a collection of the old Pacific series. Rather, it's a reprint of all those stories using Kirby's original pencils (with only a handful of pages featuring inks because the originals were either unavailable or unusable). To ease reading, the print-quality lettering of the comics is used to replace Kirby's temporary hand-lettering. The effect is a story as easy to read as a print comic, but with the primal power of the original pencils preserved.

This gives Silver Star an edge that you rarely see from Kirby. The King is great because he captures such imaginative images, but here, he captures emotion as well. Silver Star was originally intended as a screenplay (that text is included in this volue, btw), and the cinematic element in the writing and art really shows through. I don't think anyone would call this Kirby's finest work, but it's definitely enjoyable for both story and historical reasons.

Note that a portion of the profits from this book go to the Kirby Museum, so it's a worthy cause!

Our pastor shared the story of the Little Red Hen from this book and we laughed and enjoyed it so much, we ordered it for our friends and family for Christmas. My husband and I recommend this book for Christian Humor and for people who enjoy fairy tale analogy! I look forward to reading Fabry's other books as well!

      2 out of 5 stars Not a good investment.......2006-09-25

this book was very overly "spiritual" in all of it's stories, to a fault really. Instead of Cinderella, there is "Compulsivella" and for Beauty & the beast, there is one titled, "Beauty and the mark of the beast". Someone gave us the book, I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars, is because it gave me a good laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Spiritually Correct Bedtime Stories.......2000-07-04

When I first saw this book in a store, I started to glance through it, and ended up standing there reading almost the whole thing! It's enchanting, and chastising, to see familiar stories become so personal to modern life. The humor makes it that much more memorable. It's going to be on my gift list for sure.

This is a great calendar! Shag is one of my favorite artists. His style is truly unique and his artwork definitely puts you in a retro-lounge kind of mood. It takes you back to the wonderful ultra hip, ultra chic, ultra cool, ultra lounge, ultra laid back, cocktails & martinis era of the 1960's. This calendar also exhibits some of Shag's more humorous and playful side as well. Each month will take you to a different part of the world, from Venice to Rio, to Paris and Tokyo. This is a great introduction to the world of Shag, but also for those who are already familiar with his work, it's another great way of having his work in your home (especially since all his prints sell out so quickly!). Be sure to check out his website: www.shag.com

2 out of 5 stars As basic a book as eluded to in the title! Only 2/5ths good........2004-01-06

I was quite intrigued by the title of this book as I am sure most folks are who are interested and buy books on domino. I have seen this book often sold with a big set of dominoes included with the package elsewhere - but that hardly makes up for the book which has too many gross errors. At one point in reading about one game description and rules I became hopelessly lost and couldn't really understand much! Its just another book. I finally got the book "Dominoes Plus: The Dominoforms Handbook" as my main guide of use myself to replace this one.

1 out of 5 stars Hard to read and full of errors.......2001-10-22

It boggles the mind how a book publisher can put out a book with so many typos and mistakes. Since the author's name looks German maybe the problem was in the translation process. After struggling with this book for a week I went back and purchased Jennifer A. Kelley's Great Book of Domino Games... what a difference. My advice is don't waste your time or money on Muller's book. Buy Kelley's book (her book is a pleasure to read).

        2 out of 5 stars Rough edition.......1999-08-30

I am not sure if there was a translation error, bad print run, etc... but watch out for typos and other errors in this book. Learning a new game becomes even more challenging when the diagrams do not match up and the text is wrong.

2 out of 5 stars A decent overview, but errs on at least one specific game........1997-12-09

My specific goal with this book was to find information about the famous Texas domino game of "42," so I was primarily interested in that section of the book. Its attempt to teach that game is inconsistent with the known guidelines and strategies played in Texas 42, so be careful if that is your interest in this book. If so, a comprehensive new book solely on the domino game of "42" is available from amazon.com - "Winning 42: Strategy & Lore of the National Game of Texas."

The credentials of Mr. Strong are not stated. Due to the many errors in grammar, spelling and the use of the wrong words in the text spoils the spirit of the history of the Phoenicians. I would not want Mr. Strong to write a history of my people!

The first two-hundred pages are filled with redundancies. He states the same legends (myths) over and over and over. It will put you to sleep without the use of prescription drugs!

There is little consistency in his style and format. On the same page he will state, "....and in the 8th and 7th centuries BC..." and then in the next paragraph "... and in the VIII and VII centuries....".

Of course these mistakes could have been eliminated if the publisher had hired a knowledgeable editor and trained proof readers.

I will not recommend this book to anyone unless the numerous mistakes are corrected. Therefore, I give it one star -- mainly because that is the lowest rating available.

        5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2004-10-31

Mr. Strong writes a coherent, detailed, yet story like history of this ancient group of traders that remarkably were responsible for many of the things we take for granted today. This is well researched and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their horizon.

Galileo's trial by the Inquisition is one of the most dramatic incidents in the history of science and religion. Today, we tend to see this event in black and white--Galileo all white, the Church all black. Galileo in Rome presents a much more nuanced account of Galileo's relationship with Rome. The book offers a fascinating account of the six trips Galileo made to Rome, from his first visit at age 23, as an unemployed mathematician, to his final fateful journey to face the Inquisition. The authors reveal why the theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun, set forth in Galileo's Dialogue, stirred a hornet's nest of theological issues, and they argue that, despite these issues, the Church might have accepted Copernicus if there had been solid proof. More interesting, they show how Galileo dug his own grave. To get the imprimatur, he brought political pressure to bear on the Roman Censor. He disobeyed a Church order not to teach the heliocentric theory. And he had a character named Simplicio (which in Italian sounds like simpleton) raise the same objections to heliocentrism that the Pope had raised with Galileo. The authors show that throughout the trial, until the final sentence and abjuration, the Church treated Galileo with great deference, and once he was declared guilty commuted his sentence to house arrest. Here then is a unique look at the life of Galileo as well as a strikingly different view of an event that has come to epitomize the Church's supposed antagonism toward science.

5 out of 5 stars The difficulty of incorporating scientific thought into established orthodoxy........2007-04-22

Recognized as the father of modern science for his study of physics and astronomy, Galileo's adherence to the Copernican theory of heliocentrism might not have been so problematic had it not been for his personality and misreading of Vatican politics. As it was he felt justified in printing his treatise Dialogue contrary to the church's admonition against his teaching of the theory. It is indicative of Galileo's scholarship and reputation that few of the volumes were handed back to authorities when the Dialogue was banned and Galileo was permitted to serve his sentence under house arrest.

Galileo's six trips to Rome began as a young man seeking employment and culminated with his hearings before the Holy Office forty-six years later when he admitted to "having violated an injunction not to discuss Copernicansim." (194) The author's use Galileo's letters, Papal records, newly discovered documents, and historical references to place the story in context.

As it unfolds the difficulty of incorporating scientific thought into established orthodoxy is shown at the very conception of science. What becomes clear is that a discovery, to be accepted, has to have a welcome mat and the structure of society does not always provide one. Galileo had to operate within an ecclesiastic framework not in tune with his views. While Galileo had many supporters, his opponents, whom he often accused of being ignorant, were powerful adversaries. It did not necessarily matter whether objections were valid or not as long as they adhered to tradition.

Another problem for science, is demonstrated by Galileo's use and improvement of the telescope. The power of the scope was increased twenty times and objects could be properly focused. Galileo demonstrated the telescope in social settings to impress distinguished guests with a close-up view of Rome and the stars. However his critics did not always understand the telescope's potential because "impatient and shortsighted philosophers often saw a blurred image that confirmed their prejudices." (41)

Within the scientific community new devices do not necessarily lead to conformity of opinion. Utilizing the telescope, Galileo was able to observe Jupiter with its satellite moons revolving around the sun in a Copernican system. That and the discovery of sunspots overturned Aristotelian perfection of the universe. Even though Galileo and the Jesuit professor from Germany, Christopher Scheiner, both observed the same spots, they came to different conclusions: Scheiner to buttress Aristotelian immutability by declaring the spots were moons and Galileo by using the sun spots to show the Sun's rotation on its axis.

There is another point to be made from reading Shea and Artigas' book on Galileo. All his life Galileo held to his belief of tidal theory "as his decisive argument for the motion of earth." (123). Here the recognized father of modern science is holding resolutely to an idea contrary to basic observation of seaman that there were two high and low tides in the Mediterranean sea, not one each as his theory postulated. "He was so convinced of the validity of his proof of the earth's motion that continued to believe, in the teeth of evidence, that diurnal period in the ocean followed a 24- not a 12- hour cycle." (132) Galileo, the master, is probably only one of many scientists to follow who are caught in the trap of their own beliefs in the face of convincing evidence to the contrary.

        4 out of 5 stars HELIOCENTRICITY v. THE CHURCH.......2005-04-21

Early 17th Century Rome. Any book that is published must first be reviewed and revised by the Catholic Church. The Church still stings from Martin Luther's 95 Theses, and King Henry VIII's secession. A Papal Conclave is disrupted by three Cardinals dying whilst Rome is in the grip of a malaria outbreak. Bubonic Plague rears its ugly head after close to 300 years. The Pope peppers his Cardinal enclave with relatives. The Pope is not only a spiritual leader, but also the mayor of Rome, trying to administrate a bustling city while also nurturing the world's flock. And not all the Cardinals support the Pope, either (and he knows it).

Enter Galileo, who argues that the Earth is NOT the center of the universe; the sun is. The establishment likes his telescope, but not what he sees through it. Galileo will not abide superstition; he believes heliocentricity is a fact, and he's damned and determined to make sure everyone else believes it too. This idea crashes head-on with long-held beliefs, and the Catholic Church is not about to tolerate another compromise. After five journeys to Rome to argue his case, spread out over decades, Galileo is at last subpoenaed by the Tribunal of the Inquisition, where confession is mandatory. The only question is--should the defendant be put to death . . . or merely imprisoned?

Enter this world where free thinking might put you in irons, where paranoia is the rule, where whispers can kill. These learned men, the authors, have left no stone unturned in exploring the role and effect of Galileo's scientific endeavors. At the time, he was an extremely likable man--full of anecdotes, well-read, he could make the ladies laugh--but no one dreamed he would become the father of modern science, as he is regarded today. But he was also a tragic man, beset with lifelong illness, the loss of friends and relatives to disease, and the misery of isolation for his beliefs. And he agonized over the fact that the Church questioned his faith in God.

This book can be dry; it can overload you with Italian names--it can fill you with righteous anger--but it can never bore you. For all ye lovers of truth, of justice, of history, even of Catholicism, I unreservedly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Galileo of History.......2004-03-09

I would recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding the Galileo affair as an historical event and not simply as the stereotype of obscurantist religion fearing the truths of science. Built around Galileo's six trips to Rome, the authors give a lucid explanation of Galileo's life and work. Galileo's is ever more successful as a scientist and ever more eager to vanquish those who disagreed with him.

While clearly a scientific genius, he claimed theories to be true without ever having physical proof. He insisted, falsely, that the tides were caused by the earth's rotation and then used the fact of the tides to argue for the Copernican thesis that the earth and not the heavens was in motion. When certain theologians objected that his theory seemed contrary to scripture, he entered, with no expertise, into a theological discussion on the proper mode of interpreting scripture. Unfortunately this intemperance in debate led finally to Galileo's "trial" and house arrest.

At the same time, the theologians are presented as a mixed lot, some opposing Galileo with an irrational zeal, others soberly weighing the evidence he proposed and so insisting that he treat his theory as a hypothesis and not as proven fact. The authors present the Church's position with some sympathy: it seemed imprudent to change the more obvious understanding of scripture without proof for the scientific theory that undermined it.

The book's prose is plain, but always clear and readable. The tone is dispassionate and objective. The authors, both serious scholars in the field, have clearly done their homework (but mercifully use endnotes) and present a balanced account. This book may not change your view of Galileo or the Church, but it will certainly leave you much better informed about the facts of the case. Given the importance of understanding science and religion, this is no small matter.

                  Book Description

From Resource Scarcity to Ecological Security revisits the findings of The Global 2000 Report to the President -- commissioned by President Jimmy Carter and released in 1980 -- and presents an up-to-date overview, informed by the earlier projections, of such critical topics as population, water, food, energy, climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity. It examines current environmental trends in order to consider the state of the global environment over the next thirty years and discusses what can be done now to achieve ecological security.

The contributors to From Resource Scarcity to Ecological Security find that the world population will likely continue to level off, but the population decline in many industrialized countries will create new socioeconomic and political problems -- including the "reverse demographic shock" of disproportionately large aging populations. Although world food production is likely to increase at a rate that keeps up with population growth, greater demand in China as well as distributional issues will keep significant numbers of people malnourished. In addition to these continuing scarcity issues, ecological insecurity may increase because of new threats that include global warming, loss of biodiversity, bioinvasion, and the rapid worldwide spread of new diseases. Assessing Limits to Growth not only analyzes the nature of these impending problems but also suggests ways to solve them.
