Book Description
George Pólya was one of the giants of classical analysis in the 20th century, and the influence of his work can be seen far beyond analysis, into number theory, geometry, probability and combinatorics. This book serves both as a biography of Pólya’s life, and a review of his many mathematical achievements by experts from a wide range of different fields. Last but not least the book finishes with two essays by Pólya himself which focus on how to learn to solve problems, a subject with which he was fascinated throughout his life.

George Polya and his times........2003-06-02
Even if you aren't in math, I think you are likely to be caught up in the drama of George Polya and the various lives, the times, and the events that he touched. The writing is fast paced and engaging, much like that of Constance Reid's books: "Hilbert", or "Courant"... Through its appendices [by K.L. Chung, R. P. Boas, M. M. Schiffer...], this lovely book further gives you some insight into the math that underlies the stories. Other characters in the book: G. Szego, L. Fejer, J von Neumann, G. H. Hardy, H. Weyl, E. Landau, ...Through the book, the reader gets to experience the tumultous historical period that spans the long career of G. Polya: His life includes the main centers of science and math in Europe in the Golden period between the two World Wars. The second part is Polya's life of teaching and research in the US, at Stanford University. I was a guest at Polya's ninetieths birthday. It has been said that mathematicians have been more likely than others to have been uprooted in the upheavals of history, perhaps because they are concerned with theories and ideas that are more universal.
A prolific, versatile man who was also a mathematician.......2001-06-19
While George Polya is credited with coining the phrase "random walk", his journey through life was anything but random. Extremely influential in many areas of mathematics, his book, "How to Solve It" alone would have made a career. Like so many mathematical heavyweights of this century, his nationality was Hungarian. Given the number of mathematicians and their collective prolific output, Hungary must lead the world in per capita production of mathematical papers. Polya's first papers were published in 1912 and his last in 1987.
The range of the work is just as impressive. Many concepts now considered standard mathematical fare were products of his genius. When reading this biography, you are struck by the features of human nature that he projects. Who else would talk about the list of the three nicest mathematicians that they ever met? Would anyone else dare to also talk about the three most unpleasant mathematicians that they ever encountered? His honesty when admitting that he was intimidated by John von Neumann show a level of humility that few people of his stature would ever acknowledge.
In an era when being a lackluster to pathetic teacher is considered a prerequisite for a position as a research mathematician it is extremely refreshing to read about his qualities as a teacher and his concern for the profession. He was an existence proof of the reality that it is possible to be both. His contributions to the field of teaching are as strong as those in any other area of his expertise.
Biographies of mathematicians sometimes degenerate into lists of life accomplishments emphasizing the major formulas and proofs of their lives. In others, the person comes across as a solid professional, but there seems to be little else to their life. In writing about Polya, the author is describing a person that you would no doubt find to be pleasant company.
One of those amazing Hungarian mathematical exports that graced the United States with their presence, George Polya was truly a credit to the professions of being a mathematician and a human. This is one of the most enjoyable biographies of a mathematician that I have ever read.

Book Description
The world's most beloved characters - from Pluto to Pooh - speak candidly about the kinship they share with their pal Mickey Mouse.
Taking off from the current "Why Do We Love the Mouse?" advertising campaign that features celebrities expressing their devotion to the Mouse, this clever keepsake contains "interviews" and "publicity photographs" of Mickey's highly animated bosom buddies.
Customer Reviews:
I was SO misled..........2001-12-23
This book is adorable in idea... but Mickey was nowhere to be found... which disappointed ME because he IS my husband (that whole Minnie thing is a sham). It's full of all of the Disney characters telling why they LOVE Mickey. I just wished Mickey HIMSELF was in the book more than just on the cover. It's basically a picture book with a small caption from each character... very cute.
But there still should have been more Mickey!
Why Heck Not??.......2001-05-24
I loved the TV commercials featuring celebrities talking about why they love Mickey Mouse. When I saw this book I thought to myself, there's a terrific idea: have the Disney celebrities (Cinderella, Goofy, Donald, etc.) answer the same question. What can I say -- it's delightful. If you love Mickey Mouse and the whole Disney gang the way I do, you'll love this book. I've already read it eleven times, and I plan to read it eleven more times before dinner.

Customer Reviews:
What a dissapointment !.......2007-04-12
I was looking for a manual for Premiere Elements 3.0 but this book doesn't cover this version. Maybe it is good for version 1.0
Helpful book, but doesn't reflect Premiere Elements 2.0.......2006-01-16
I bought this book because I found the Premiere Elements user guide less than helpful. Adobe Premiere Elements for Dummies does contain a lot of helpful information and tips, but my impression is that I'll need to read the book cover to cover rather than using it as a reference guide. Be aware that this book's screen shots do not reflect Premiere Elements 2.0. I don't know how different 2.0 is from previous versions, but this was a source of frustration for me when I was trying to find out how to "single step" through a clip.
The Book Adobe should have Written!.......2005-08-04
I have been working with Adobe Elements for about 6 months now. I started with Adobe's tutorial and then their "Classroom in a Book" series and have created numerous multi hour DVD's from old VHS video I have. As with most books from the makers of software, they leave a lot of how too stuff out, so I started to look elsewhere for more info on how to use all of the great things in Elements. I saw this book and it's rating so I figured I'd give it a try. For the $16 it cost, even if I learned just two new helpful things it would be worth the money. Never having read any other ".... For Dummies" book I had no Idea what to expect.
I am currently half way through the book and I have to say I have learned not just two but a lot of new things. There are a lot of the basics in the book for people just starting out with Elements but it also goes into detail on how to use all of the fancy transitions and effects very clearly. Before this book I had no idea on how to use some of the more complex effects properly. It's is clear that the author is very familiar with Premere Elements and video editing. The book is worth three times the $16 it cost.
The only thing I felt should have been done, but was not, was that the pictures should be in color. Even if this drove the price up $5 a book it would be better. I say this because often the author refers to the color of an item (The yellow line) in the pictures and unless you are sitting in front of your PC with Elements up or you are very familiar with the Elements windows, all you are going to see is a black and white photo.
Bottom line - A great book, buy it, you won't be disappointed.
I will definitely be looking for other books by Keith Underdahl. Hopefully he knows Photoshop Elements too!
Great advice.......2005-07-25
This book is just what I needed. I had just acquired the Premiere Elements Program and understood the very basics from the anemic book that comes with the program, and the DVD that introduces the program. Premiere Elements for Dummies took me to the details needed in putting together projects, editing the clips, adding the soundtrack and music, and getting it to disc. I read other books, and this was the best one - not too basic, not too detailed or advanced.
Definitely worth buying.......2005-03-19
This book has the practical advise that you really need to get results. I highly recommend reading Chapter 2, Equipping Yourself for Movie Making, even before buying the program itself. I had done some video editing with other consumer grade programs, but was new to Premiere. This really helped me get up to speed quickly. Skip the Adobe tutorials and manual and read this very reasonably priced, easy to read and concise book.

Great introduction to a fascinating culture.......2003-02-26
This is a wonderful book written for a wide audience which includes high schoolers, educators, and anyone interested in Korea. Ms. Connor, who is a high school teacher herself, covers history, culture, politics, economics and more. Every high school library should have 'The Koreas' in stock. The book is well researched, well written, and serves as a great platform from which to begin study of North and South Korea. Bravo!
Book Description
This volume makes accessible some of the most recent research of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in France. Using a topical approach to provide broad thematic coverage of the period from 1500 to 1648, each chapter focuses on a specific area of French history: politics and the state, the economy, society and culture, religion, and gender and the family. The book is more than a collection of topical essays, however, as each chapter is linked to the others, together forming a coherent narrative of French history from the advent of the Reformation, through the civil wars of the second half of the sixteenth century, to the Fronde. The result is the most up-to-date synthesis of this period, showing how recent scholarship has significantly revised the traditional narrative of French history.
Customer Reviews:
Very readable.......2004-07-31
Though I generally prefer narrative history, and this book includes very little narrative beyond its chapter on the Wars of Religion, I found all the various authors' styles so attractive that I was sucked in to reading the thematic material in the rest of the book as well! Therefore I highly recommend the book. I've recently read a more detailed book on the Wars of Religion, but found the material here a very clear outline, particularly in conjunction with the several page chronology in the back of the book which expands on the text material, not only for the Wars of Religion, but for the entire period covered in the text. The brief section of the French experience overseas was especially well handled--I felt I learned the key points for understanding this time period in just a few pages. And as implied above, I also enjoyed reading and learned a lot from the many sections on economics, politics, and social trends. As well, most of the locales mentioned in the text are actually on maps included in the book, which can sometimes not be the case with history books. One of the best book I've read on Early Modern Europe.
