5 out of 5 stars Star Wars at its Finest!.......2003-06-20

Terrific grouping of stories, both epic and self-contained, during the period immediately following Return of the Jedi (and Truce at Bakura) which contains some of the best and most exciting Star Wars tales to date.

With Jo Duffy firmly at the helm as writer, the Marvel Star Wars series really hit its stride with these issues. Duffy has an instinctive feel for the Star Wars Universe and especially for its characters whom she handles with expert grace. She also adds a touch of genuine humor, an element present in the films, but oftentimes lacking in Star Wars fiction. Unlike criticisms of The Phantom Menace, however, the humor never collides with the dramatic tension, and in this the author excels, producing some of the more somber and dark tales of the series. In these issues, moreover, there is an onslaught of movement, both the fast action-paced variety and the more internal dramatic ones.

With the dissipation of the Empire, an alien force moves in (precursors to the later Yuuzahn Vong) that is both ruthless and terrifying. The Nagai are the proud and sometimes vicious warriors of a system that itself has suffered the ill-effects of centuries-long war. Drawn in malevolent form by the likes of experts Tom Palmer (one of my all-time favorite SW artists) and then newcomer Cynthia Martin (who's style predates the US invasion of Japanese art), the Nagai are never one-dimensional villains, and along with fan-favorite, Lumiya (a former Rebel plant trained in the Dark Side by Vader himself), dominate these pages with a presence that perfectly fills in the gap left by the Empire.

Also featured here is Randy Stradley's first contribution (issue 86: Last Gift of Alderaan) which is a prequel to his later Crimson Empire series for Dark Horse. This is a moving tale that never fails to elicit resonance. Issue 89 (I'll See You in the Throne Room) by Ann Nocenti is likewise a haunting and evokative tale of betrayal, greed and madness that provides a forgleam of Luke's eventual descent to the Dark Side six years later in Dark Empire. Some times the Bad Guys win... Also, here is the first entry by everyone's favorite Star Wars artist, Jan Duursema in a story called "The Dream", a fantastic conclusion to The Apprentice (in Annual 3) which demonstrates the sad consequences of the abuse of power, and in which we are given a glimpse of the second Dark Lord of the Sith to follow in the wake of Vader's demise (the first being Lumiya) as well as a surprising and touching appearance by Yoda! Great stuff here! The above is just a sampling of the many incredible stories you'll find. There's also a fantastic Lando tale (with his famous and hysterical "Drebble" disguise!), Ewoks at war, Hoojibs, Han, Leia, Chewie on his homeworld of Kashyyyk and much, much more!

Dark Horse has again done a magnificent job reprinting these long out-of-print and hard-to-find issues, and they've never looked and felt so good! No true fan of Star Wars should be without this book and it's accompanying volumes on their shelf. A masterpiece of writing, art and packaging!

4 out of 5 stars Did This Really Happen?.......2004-11-26

Maybe it was just me, but when I purchased this book on line I assumed it was going to be a book, you know the type with chapters and well thought out paragraphs. What I got was a book that is made up of day by day humorous quotes from the news sources of the time. So I was a little disappointed at the start just because my expectation was not met. With that out of the way I dug in and found the book provided a number of laughs and brought back a number of memories. The author picked up on mostly political issues to populate the book, but he does toss in a few pop culture items that usually show the ridiculous side of American life. The humor the author uses is rather dry and sarcastic, which fit very well with the news reporting style blurbs.

Overall the book is an easy to read, fun review of the 1980's that brought back a lot of memories for me. The author does tend to focus on a small group of topics, Geraldo Rivera, his dislike of popular music and Michael Jackson all seem to get repeated mentions. The book is the type you can have around and pick up every now and then and read a few pages. It is light fair and shows a 10,000 feet view of the 80's.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff-wouldn't mind one on Dubya!.......2003-01-25

If I owned a time machine, I'd go back to the late seventies when Reagan was starting his campaign and drop copies of this book all over the country.

      Perhaps it could have helped.

The idea that someone so incompetant and clueless could become PRESIDENT is a sobering thought.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Time Capsule into the American 80's.......2002-07-29

The cover has been crudely taped on backwards, the cover laminate is gone, the pages are dog eared, but my copy still holds together after countless re-readings.
Chronological, exhaustive coverage of the gaffes and shocking lies told to the american public that made reagan so memorable (or should have), combined with gems of pop culture, entertainment, crime, and so on. An illustrated, cynical diary of soundbites and factoids. If you were under the general impression that reagan wasn't that bad of a president, you will walk away from this a changed person: he WAS'NT the president! The ascerbic commentary may seem occasionally unfair, (more so if your a republican), but 9 times out of 10 it hits straight on, attacking both democrats and republicans with their own quotes and foolishness. But mostly reagan.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Ruthless but Alarmingly True.......2001-05-12

Paul Slanksy evidently hates everyone, and the 80's supplied him with more than enough material to nail them all. Obviously, Republicans take far more abuse because the book IS about the Reagan era. This book is funny and really cuts through the nostalgia many (GOP in particular) hold about the 80's. Great Read.

5 out of 5 stars The truth revealed.......2000-07-01

I've lent this book to countless friends who all regarded former President Ronald Reagan as "a great man." Few of them adhere to that opinion today. It's astonishing to think that anyone so out of touch with reality could have been elected to two terms as President. Slansky's brilliant book combines seemingly unrelated pieces of information into a cohesive whole that reveals, once and for all, the astonishing incompetence of the Reagan administration. As a bonus, Slansky also manages to skewer virtually all aspects of popular culture of the 1980's. Since those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it, this book should be required reading for all, lest we get another presidency like Reagan's. My copy has been read so many times that it is literally falling apart. One of the great books of the last fifty years.

        Book Description

This collection contains twenty-seven new essays on American paranoia drawn from a range of disciplines, including American studies, film studies, history, literature, religious studies, and sociology. It’s arranged by topic and largely in chronological order, explore manifestations of fear throughout the history of the United States. Approaching the topic from a variety of perspectives and methodologies, contributors to the collection explore theoretical constructions of fear, religious intolerance in early American culture, racial discrimination, literary expressions of paranoia, and Cold War anxieties, as well as phobias of the modern age and about the future. Together, these essays cover topics from nearly every period of U.S. history, offering a remarkable picture of the "nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror" that Roosevelt discerned as such a paralyzing threat on the eve of the Second World War, and which continues to haunt American culture even as we shape our perceptions of the future.

5 out of 5 stars Best available work on socio-cultural scapegoating........1999-08-12

Beginning with a readable theoretical treatment of social fear, the authors marshal a relentless serial record of socio-cultural fears, hatreds, and discriminatory campaigns throughout U.S. history. From the Christian converts among Native Americans in New England to alien invaders of today, the focus of the periodic "Plague of Paranoia" has moved across the face of the land and selected people on the bases of a multitude of rationales -- religion and ethnicity, social behavior and gender, and others -- for discrimination, humiliation, and death, always in the name of saving the "good citizens" from some real or imagined evil. Are such plagues an unavoidable negative side to something (fear) that, on the whole, is socially valuable, even necessary? What can we learn of the plagues and their adversaries that can prepare us better to deal with such phenomenon in the future? FEAR ITSELF, besides offering very provocative case studies, provides helpful insights into both the sources and the control of scapegoating behavior.

The "Star Trek:TNG How to Host a Mystery" game allows 8 guests to assume the roles of their favorite Next Gen characters. Combined with food and costume, you can be swept away into the 24th century for an evening and become a suspect in the theft of the Legendary Orb of Knowledge! Use your imagination and ingenuity to accuse the other players of the crime as well as direct the suspicion away from yourself. Very enjoyable game for anyone wanting to do a little role playing and to solve a mystery. You do not necessarily have to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy this game, but it does help you in knowing many of the technical terms and character personalities of the Away Team members suspected of committing the crime. Highly recommended!

        4 out of 5 stars Mini-recipes for WSH.......2004-11-07

If you are familiar with O'Reilly's cookbook books you will be familiar with the format. First the author presents a problem, then a set of solutions and a some description of how the solution works. This book has a similar format but the recipes are more small and the explanations more terse. The author expects that you know a lot about the Windows Script Host to start with and are looking for some help here and there to get through common problems.

The value of a recipes book is first in the areas it covers and problems it solves, and is secondarily in what you can learn from the solutions to the problems presented. Since the solutions are so small and the descriptions relatively brief, the value is really in what problems are covered. The sections I found most relevant were file management and 'inside the registry'. Your mileage may vary though, so I would look at the table of contents before making your purchase to ensure that you are getting enough value for your dollar.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, detailed and thorough reference.......2004-03-06

Now in a newly updated and expanded second edition, Windows Admin Scripting Little Black Book by Microsoft Windows expert Jesse M. Torres is a comprehensive and superbly organized, 464-page instructional reference and resource. Focusing on immediate solutions to difficult problems with security, information gathering; automatic task scheduling; basic information concerning Windows 2000/XP/2003 architecture, and a great deal more, Windows Admin Scripting is an excellent, detailed and thorough reference which is especially recommended to the attention of systems administrators.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference.......2004-03-04

The first edition of this book has been out of print for some time. Mine is ragged from flipping through it. Covering the most common areas of scripting an administrator would be concerned with, you have the additional option of choosing the method best for you from the multiple solutions provided. VBS is covered lots of places, but Batch is becoming a hard topic to find good information on- KiXtart? Forget about it- until the first edition of this book hit, there was little mention of KiXtart in any book! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pocket Reference.......2004-03-03

I ordered this book after reading its review ... I need automate system rollouts, create/modify users, install applications, etc; and this book shows how to do it quickly and simply. I especially like that all examples are shown in 3 different scripting languages, because then I get to choose what language I want to use or whats easiest or appropriate.

This book covers both automating Windows and common 3rd party products. the author picked a good selection of 3rd party apps, as I use most of these in my environment (winzip, ghost, norton antivirus).

I wish the book were physically smaller, like the microsoft pocket guides and came with a cd (although you can download all the scripts and other stuff from the author's website). Besides that, excellent.

        3 out of 5 stars A Good Secondary Addition.......2004-03-03

This book is a very useful addition, when used in conjunction with, and after a review of, other books on scripting and Windows administration. Throughout the book you will find cut-and-paste scriptlets written in a variety of languages and organized in a relatively easy to find manner. When you aren't looking at scriplets, you will find an abundance of command line syntax references and third-party solutions for very specific issues. As a general administrator, if you know what you want to do, and you don't need a lot of hand-holding or further information, you will probably find it here.

That said, lets discuss the annoyances of this title. First and foremost, a very healthy portion of this book is dedicated to regurgitating the command line syntax (what you get from /? ) from the many utilities referenced (most of which are available from the utilities themselves or the included documentation). The book also includes a lot of command line syntax / usage printouts of 3rd application suites, such as PowerQuest's Drive Image Pro, Symantec's Norton Ghost, LiveUpdate, pcANYWHERE, and Norton AntiVirus, Microsoft Office and WinZip to name a few. It is hard to tell if they were included as a paid endorsement or not, but the author seems to feel that everyone has them, they are your only choice, and does not include a CD-ROM of evaluation software. The book also makes heavy use of non-native scripting languages (KiXtart primarily) as the scripting language of choice to show many of the cut-and-paste solutions; despite it being a foreign command interpreter to the Windows OS and not the industry standard for administrative scripting.

You won't truly learn how to script with this "Admin Scripting" book. You won't learn the in's and out's of the administrative components you are trying to control. You won't be informed about all the ways to accomplish a task if a 3rd party solution is utilized. You will, however, find yourself with a quick reference "idea" book which will come in very handy when you just need the answer to something quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of 21 CFR Part 11.......2004-04-22

While everyone has heard about giant companies such as Wal-Mart and General Motors, Fortune magazine occasionally runs articles about huge companies that most people don't know of. Similarly, in the information security space, many people have heard of regulations such as Common Criteria, ISO-17799 and HIPAA. Yet there is a huge regulation that many people know nothing of, namely 21 CFR Part 11.

Title 21 Part 11 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (also known as 21 CFR Part 11 or simply Part 11) falls under the authority of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA felt that the risks of falsification, misinterpretation and change without leaving evidence are higher with electronic records than paper records and therefore specific controls are required.

Part 11 deals with the conditions under which the FDA will accept electronic records and electronic signatures as equivalent to paper records and handwritten signatures and electronic New Drug Application (NDA) submissions as equivalent to paper submission.

With that, 21 CFR Part 11: Complete Guide to International Computer Validation is a very good overview of the topic.

The book details how organizations regulated by Part 11 can create a compliance strategy for validated systems.

Anyone needing a quick introduction to Part 11 will find this work valuable.

The only negative to this book is its price; at $180.00, it is extremely expensive. Such a price will make the book unobtainable for most readers. I believe its low Amazon.com Sales Rank of 1,810,979 is due directly to that.
