Mr Right when you need him is the perfect gift for any woman, single or married. The doll has 4 or 5 phrases that will instantly make this a gift that will be passed around from person to person. However, I must warn you that too much use causes difficulty in squeezing the doll (It was a little too popular with my friends!) The book is light hearted and a fun read. Highly recommend as a gift!!

This is a very nice book and doll package containing 'a sweet-talking man-doll and 64-page owner's manual with helpful tips on use and care.' Author Karen Salmansohn is superb. In part of West Africa, people have carved statuettes of their "spirit spouses" -- here is a good contemporary American version. Highly recommended.

What is Behind the Films of Max Ophuls?.......2001-12-17

Unlike some of the other books about Ophuls, Bacher's book goes into what lay behind some of Ophuls' directorial decisions, the personalities of producers, editors, stars, etc. It is the book of scholarship that needs to be written about every director worth studying. This is the book you read BEFORE you start to consider what Ophuls is trying to communicate, what the meaning is of Ophuls films. The only drawback of the book is that it only goes into detail about Ophuls' four American films!
The biggest surprise was that the book was a pleasure to read. The personalities presented are real people. It is, despite the scholarly intention of the book, very fast reading. I found it too fast.... I will have to go back and read it again in order to write my own paper on Ophuls films!

Read This Right, And You Too WILL Improve Your Game!.......2002-03-13

This Chess book is so exhilarating that I actually feel COMPELLED to write a review on it. I won't bother repeating the information in the accompanying reviews. First of all, in the overall introduction of the whole book, it is suggested that as you progress through the games, you choose the winner (or, in the case of a drawn game, the stronger player) and cover his moves with a card (I folded "Sticky Notes" in half and stuck them on vertically). Then, based on your analysis of the position and the game, announce or write down your move and compare it to the actual move. Granted, this will slow down your progress through the book by great proportions, but, by even greater proportions, it will improve your chess game. That method is called the Tactical Vision Exercise. I took (notice I'm not saying, "...it took me") from around early April 2001 to February 17, 2002 to complete the book doing it this way and my chess understanding has become improved and clarified more than 100-fold (I took about 1 to 2 hour sessions of this at least once or twice per day).
Please don't become critical or skeptical when I tell you that I have lost quite a few games of my own in my trek through this book; after all, chess is a mentally demanding game. But, I have also won many more games against strong opponents than I have in the past. That says a lot for that exercise, but, to do that with this 3-in-1 book in particular, I believe, is an extremely required activity for any good amateur wanting to improve even more greatly in chess, whether to increase your chances at casual victories or to win in more tournament games!
Speaking of tournaments, this book also gives you tremendous insight to what goes through a top-level player's mind as the tournament progresses; it's more than just a series of games. Furthermore, the editors (or was it just Mr. Tykodi?) at various points throughout the book, did an excellent job at providing improved suggestions (moves, that is [whether from a computer or from their own analysis]) where Mr. Purdy (with all due respects) may have been a bit short-sighted.
And then there are the openings!! If you crave openings knowlege and tips, this is truly a recondite handbook to a few of the classically popular ones; the Sicilian only showed up in the Spassky versus Fischer match. I had always been one to spurn the Slav, but, it was definitely the most popular one among Euwe and Alekhine.
I had not studied many Fischer games at all before my journey through the "How Fischer Won" section of this book. And now after playing through his games (via tactical vision), I must say he is a "mad genius" on the chessboard!! Many of his moves left my mouth wide open in awe! I had studied chess consistently for at least 5 years before this book and never have I come across any player more outrageously spectacular than Bobby Fischer; keep in mind I've always been of the "don't believe the hype" mentality. But, I'm from Missouri, and he definitley Showed Me!! He shows that you shouldn't shut a move out of your mind simply because you see that your piece will be captured; play it through in your mind first and calculate beyond that!
Don't be afraid at all to mark in this book like crazy; it's really the only way to imprint the information on your brain and it'll make review of the book much easier (I can't imagine going through this book word-for-word and move-by-move again). It is truly a journey.

Extremely Good.......2000-04-24

This is a three in one volume of the C.J.S. Purdy books: How Euwe Won, The Return of Alekhine, and How Fischer Won. While The Return of Alekhine is the largest of the three none outstrips the other as a far as readability and enjoyability. Purdy was a talented annotator famed for educating the intermediate chessplayer and he doesn't disappoint in these 80 annotated games. Opening nuances; complicated middlegames; well analyzed endings; missed opportunities and hidden combinations are all to be found. A summation of the openings follows each book and as an epilogue there is H.W.M. Lunney's biographical sketch on C.J.S. Purdy: The Annotator. A close reading will reveal Purdy's distinctly high regard for Euwe as both a player and a person. He had a lower opinion of Alekhine yet he had enormous esteem for Alekhine's chess and he completely disregards rumors of his drunkenness during the first match. As concerns Fischer - he is simply a chess deity. It's clear that Purdy strongly favored the two bishops, perhaps almost as much as he favored the term "Sword of Damocles" which is used recurrently. Naturally the book is somewhat dated by its stern opening opinions, but this doesn't detract from the cutthroat chess contained within. The extent of sharp tactics and engaging play that can result from the Slav Defense was truly astounding. Alekhine and Euwe each played it against each other and they were far from boring games. The Fischer-Spassky section is supplemented with a small pamphlet entitled Post Mortem 1976. Given at end of each game are corrections or reconsideration of analysis from the original text. In at least one instance the reader is told, after a column of analysis, that one of the moves was actually a typographical error. Here it may have been better to just correct the mistake than merely note its existence. I was surprised when playing through some of the games that I had never done so before. This might be expected with those from the Alekhine-Euwe matches, but even some of the Fischer-Spassky games as well. If you, too, haven't availed yourself of the opportunity of playing out these games consider Extreme Chess a grand chance to do so. The layout is well organized and there are photos interspersed throughout. The cover is colorful and artistically designed. Recommended.

Another Purdy Masterpiece.......1999-07-21

Chessco/TPI has produced another fine book, that is sure to be a best-seller. It covers the WC Matches between Alekhine and Euwe 35 and 37 and the still-discussed Spassky-Fischer duel of 72. All the games are annotated by Purdy based on his original work, but updated by Chessco; there are photographs I have not seen before. There are articles by Euwe and Alekhine written for papers/magazines give a frank and revealing picture of both champions. The notes are superb - pure unadulterated Purdy - this man had opinions and was not backward in coming forward with them. I like that! Buy this book and have the read of your life!

Nice book. I've been an NLE dabbler for a few years, but never very serious about it. After finishing this book, I feel pretty comfortable with avid xpress, which was pretty intimidating at first. Good, easy read. I would have liked color pictures, though...

Clear, Concise guide!.......2005-03-11

This is an excellent, well-written guide to the Avid Xpress Pro system, and while it can't replace the extended Authorized Avid Education advanced editing course, it is a great overview of the many different topics covered therein.

But, more importantly, it covers many things not in the official Avid training guides - things that after reading this book one feels really should be, like practical tips, tricks, and notes for a more truly professional end project. I would definitely recommend this for serious editors and people who want to get into the deeper strengths of the Avid system... it moves quickly, and might be confusing for a complete beginner.

I am just finishing up on this book, and after two solid days I have gone from no experience with avid to very comfortable. I don't know how well a new editor would do with this book, but if you already know FCP or Premiere this seems like an excellent way to learn all of the key concepts you need to run an editing app.
This is the best instructional manual I have come across.

I make my living editing digital video and this book is by far the best instructional material on Avid Xpress Pro I've seen. There are tips and suggestions it would have taken me years to figure out on my own. I'm doing better quality work in less time. I wish I had found this book two years ago.

New Concept in Information.......2000-05-17

"Roadside History of Montana" is a very good book on the history of Montana but beyond that it is a valuable outdoor recreation tool. Along with "Roadside Geology of Montana" this book adds wheels to reading. The concept of formatting a book to follow highways has opened up new vistas for me when traveling with a companion to read as you travel, or to study in advance when traveling solo. This concept has increased my enjoyment of ALL of my outdoor activities, at least the getting there part.

Scotch-Irish in the Carolinas.......2000-08-01

I found this book to be very informative. It provides some information genealogically and describes the historical perspective of the region. I bought both the Carolinas and the Tennessee book and found that there was repetition. Therefore, I recommend buying one book on the Scotch-Irish written by Mr. Kennedy.

Using the community of the Waxhaws as his proving ground, Peter N. Moore challenges the notion that the Carolina upcountry was a static, undeveloped backwater until entrepreneurial cotton planters entered the region after 1800. Moore looks through the lens of a single community--a predominately Scots-Irish settlement in the lower Catawba River valley in what are today Fairfield, Lancaster, York, and Chester counties--to document the social, economic, and cultural characteristics of a locale that was dynamic before planters set their sights on piedmont South Carolina.

Moore shows that social tensions within the Waxhaw community drove its transformation, rather than the land-grabbing speculators and aggressive planters. He identifies forces for change: immigration patterns, neighborhood rivalries, population growth, and developing markets for slaves and wheat. By 1800 the Waxhaws bore little resemblance to the backcountry community of the late colonial period. Moore complicates the broader picture of the transformation of the Southern interior. He also contributes to the debate over the rural transition to capitalism and engages the literature of the evangelical Great Revival to demonstrate the influence of revivals, familial loyalties, and doctrinal differences on the region's religious culture. Telling a more inclusive story than many studies of the late-colonial piedmont, World of Toil and Strife points to the importance of Indian-white conflicts in shaping both the geography of local communities and the mentality of white settlers.

Beautiful pictures and enough info for kids, or for doing preliminary research.......2006-07-03

I have recently begun to study jellyfish, at this point more interested in photographs and brief descriptions rather than full pages of scientific data. My study is writer-related rather than scientifically related, so 'Amazing Jellies' was perfect for my goal. It is also nice if you are looking for a special jelly book for a school age child with advanced reading skills.

The pictures are plentiful and exceptionally good. The brief information provided covers types of jellies, the parts of the jellyfish, jelly forms, their lifecycles, how they move around, and what they eat (not to mention what eats them).

The font is a bit small for the younger grade-school set, and the longer words are not 'played down' so some of the reading could be difficult for the younguns. The book itself is small, only six-by-six inches, so it shouldn't be confused with a coffee-table book.

If you are looking for a pretty, inexpensive beginning point for information on jellyfish, this book is a nice place to start. Enjoy!
