Philip Lisa Delivers the Best Book on James Bond.......2001-03-18

Philip Lisa is the driving force behind this book. He is a man of extensive knowledge on the subject of James Bond and his ability to discuss this subject is boundless. This book covers each of the Broccoli / United Artists James Bond films. These are the official films. The book gives objective information on each title written with editorial doses of interest which maintains a consistency of perspective from cover to cover. There are no favorites in the traditional sense. The authors know very well that no filmmaker or group of filmmakers ever intentionally makes an inferior motion picture. It is all a matter of how well the filmmakers combine their efforts and produce a finished product. The focus of the book is the filmmaking, not hype or glamour. The Bond films have always maintained a high ideal of production standards and this book examines that process. Besides the filmmaking this book also examines the James Bond phenomena from product merchandising (including books, toys, music, videos, games, etc.) to the cultural impact of Ian Fleming's hero. It even covers such offshoots such as the animated TV series "James Bond Jr." The book also contains key interviews with members of the acting and production crews. It is also profusely and beautifully illustrated with many colour photographs. I highly recommend this book. And take from me, Philip Lisa is more than just a contributor on this publication.

The Ultimate Book on the James Bond Film Series and Beyond.......2001-03-04

This is the best book concentrating on the James Bond films series and the phenomena it created. Written with great knowledge, gusto and inspiration this an excellent work on the subject. What is very good about this informative work is that the two authors never editorialize in a derogatory manner. If something in a film did not work, they give us their interpretation of what went wrong and suggest other possibilities. There are many unique photographs illustrating this book. It also covers James Bond Collecting. It is well written and I highly recommend it. My copy goes up to "Licence to Kill" but I do know that another printing followed which included "GoldenEye."

Lee Pfeiffer does it again.......1998-08-25

For all the James Bond fans, anything which is more intriguing is welcome at any time. From the time in 1957 when the first movie of James Bond came alive on the small screen to the first feature movie (Dr. No.) in 1962, every single item has been a treasure for a James Bond fan. It is really surprising that this book by Lee Pfeiffer has been missed out in author reviews. Considering the wealth of information that it offers about the celebrated facts of James Bond - the masterly creation of Ian Fleming and brought alive by Cubby Broccoli is a collectors dream. Having this book in the already thick treasure trove of Bond books, movies, cassettes, videos and trivia collection has been a matter of pride for me.

I wish that other Bond fans like me come forward and acknowledge the excellent documentation. As a sign off I would like to say that the book can be described in one word " INCREDIBLE"

This is the best book concentrating on the James Bond films series and the phenomena it created. Written with great enlightenment, gusto and inspiration this an excellent accomplishment on the subject. What is very good about this informative work is that the two authors never critique the films in a unfavorable manner. If something in a film did not go over well, they give us their explanation of what possibly went wrong and suggest other avenues that could have been taken. There are many unique color and black & white photographs illustrating this book. It also covers James Bond Collecting and even the James Bond Jr. cartoon TV series. It is very well written and I highly recommend it.

Simon examines the ways in which the great literature and cultural work of the past has been rewritten for today's consumer society, with supermarket tabloids such as The National Enquirer and celebrity gossip magazines like People serving as contemporary versions of the great dramatic tragedies of the past. Today's advertising repeats the tale of the Golden Age, but inverts the value system of a classic utopia; the shopping mall combines bits and pieces of the great garden styles of Western history, and now adds consumer goods; Playboy magazine revises Castiglione's Renaissance courtesy book, The Book of the Courtier; and Cosmopolitan magazine revises the women's coming-of-age novels of Jane Austen, Gustave Flaubert, and Edith Wharton.
Trash Culture concludes that the great books are alive and well, but simply hidden from the critics. It argues for the linking of high and low for the study and appreciation of each form of literature, and the importance of teaching popular culture alongside books of the great tradition in order to understand the critical context in which the books appear.

This book was great. Based on the postmodern premise that there is value in both high Culture and low culture, Simon bases his chapters on well-tested (in the Cal Poly classroom where he teaches) theories that many elements of recent culture are easier to interpret when compared and contrasted with High Culture. So, he compares "Star Wars" and "The Faerie Queen", the shopping mall and the formal European garden, Playboy and The Book of the Courtier, Star Trek and Gulliver's Travels. And with each comparison, your eyes grow wide as you see the similarities. It's a wonderful way to evaluate modern cultural production. So, basically, anyone at all open to postmodern ideas will love this book. If you're a strict modernist you will probably hate it, but it'd be good for you to read it ;-)

I can't believe I haven't seen this book on more chess 'lists' - Smyslov really stresses understanding - any player will make greater gains when armed with a strong endgame. My coach (a GM) first showed me this book in Russian - an outstanding tool for improving your game.

Not for beginners.......2006-05-02

I teach an introductory programming class in college and will be looking for a more introductory book. Those things that are essential to programming, a class-worth of learning, are taught in ONE DAY of the 21 days. That one day became 1 1/2 month. I also think the order of the days could be better: Simple subjects should come sooner than more complex ones.

Now for you techies here is what I am saying: Control Structures such as if/then, loops, arrays, and such are taught in one chapter. Then functions and subroutines and classes in the next. If this is your speed, go for it!

In short this is for either experienced or enthusiastic programmers. Those programmers could finish a day in one whole 8 hour day. But if you are a beginner don't start here.

The Abby Road of VB .NET 2003 Books.......2006-03-27

It's a good book, but yes as many have said its got lots of errors. Most computer books have lots of errors.

I wish the book would have a website with the solutions to end of chapter applications and other goodies, but it does not come with anything other than the source code for the book.

Best Introduction to VB.NET out there...........2006-02-07

I have toyed around with Java and PHP and some Visual Basic 6. I knew the craze surrounding VB.NET was strong so I took up this book. One of the best purchases I've made, to be sure. It's simplified so you get your feet wet, and then goes on into more indepth topics. It's a bit lean on the DataView (sorting and filtering, etc) but other than that I applaud this Holzner. Great piece of work.

A wonderful and poignent book.......2007-09-21

This is about my favorite book in the world. The author paints a wistfull and heart-felt picture of a world, which is, sadly, almost gone. He was the last of a family of English farm-cart and wagon builders, who's craft was the high-end of traditional technical woodworking. This book is beautifully written-both on the sentence level, and in it's loving descriptions of human skill and practical knowledge. I have been a fulltime professional woodworker and student of traditional woodworking for more than thirty years, and this book, more than any other, has helped me understand the connection between what I do, and who I am.

A very enjoyable read that allows the reader a peek into an era when people "made things" from start to finish and took pride in their craft. There's also a good bit of information on traditional woodworking and artisanship in general. I highly recommend the book.

If you wanted to sit down with a wheelwright from a couple hundred years ago and keep your mouth shut and listen to every bit of wisdom he had to impart ... that's what this book is about. Read (listen) to non-rocket science about what makes a wheel work and how to either make or not make dumb mistakes.
Valuable information about general wood working that applies not only to wheels.
Or if you're a history buff, how wooden wheels once fit into everyday life.

A personal search for meaning in a way of life that has past.......1997-12-28

I found this book to be a wonderful and informative treatise, both as a student and as an amateur woodworker. Sturt's narrative is a measured blend of documentary and moral argument, which is of equal or greater importance now, as when it was first published in 1923. In it, he offers a first-hand account of the historic, geographic, and human context concerning the artisan-producer within the tradition of medieval wood and iron work. I found three main themes within Sturt's work that were particularly pleasing to myself, and which I found relevant to my search for meaning. Firstly, he emphasizes the relationships that arose from the close interactions of a local market, of a close-knit group of workers, and of an artist and his/her medium. Secondly, he rightfully condemns the waste and destruction associated with the Industrial Revolution, while omitting a lament over the changes in the means of production. And lastly, he offers an example of the effectiveness, connectivity, and ingenuity that arises from the intimate interrelationships between workers and their tasks through their tools, between producers and consumers through their products, and between people and their community through a sense of place and a sense of purpose.

The depth and extent of the challenge of quantum mechanics becomes increasingly compelling as they move from the simplest experiments involving single photons or particles, to the famous Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen and Bell's Theorem, and then to macroscopic quantum phenomena.

excellent for first year grad students.......2006-12-29

This book is great for understanding QM conceptually. You should have studied QM at least at the undergraduate level already - the authors assume you already know the math. I'm a first year grad student in electrical engineering and the level is perfect for me (that is, challenging and slow to read, but very rewarding and not too frustrating). The authors go over a lot of spiffy experiments that have taken place in the last 50 years. They give you the experimental schematic, tell you the "expected result", give you charts of the actual result, and discuss what it means. As an engineer, this style of learning is great for me, because there's a lot of pretty diagrams and plots.

The authors also teach you how to apply the math you learned in your undergrad to actually analyze real world situations. For example, they analyze scattering events inside a fission reactor using the uncertainty principle and conclude *warning: spoilers* that the uncertainty in the position of a particle in a fission reactor is one hundred times bigger than the cross section of the nucleus it is to strike. (This is a fundamental uncertainty due to the Heisenberg Principle, not due to faulty measuring equipment). This means that we cannot visualize a fission chain reaction as these neat little balls that bounce around, splitting nuclei apart. It means that we cannot be sure what is going on inside at all. I thought that was neat.

The Foundations of Quantum Mechanics made accessible.......2006-08-24

Even after taking an advanced-level quantun mechanics course my junior year of college, I had only heard vague reference to Bell's Inequalities, and certainly had not heard of delayed-choice experiments or Bohm's formulation of quantum mechanics. I knew nothing about quantum computation, hidden variable theories, or really anything at all beyond the Copenhagen Interpretation.

Quantum mechanics tends to bring up philosophical questions in first-time students. I have a friend who after taking his first quantum course, was adamant, to near the point of hysteria, that quantum mechanics must be wrong because to him the collapse of the wave function simply did not make sense. For him, and for myself, The Quantum Challenge was exactly what we needed. It takes questions about the meaning of quantum mechanics and answers them firmly and concretely (to the extent that the answers are known) in light of experimental results. These are the sort of things they don't teach you in physics class, where you diagnolize matrices, solve Schrodinger Equations, and learn approximation methods for months without understanding how everything you're doing works in application.

I was a teaching assistant for an intensive, 4-week quantum mechanics course for high school students this summer. The Quantum Challenge was our text. At first, I was skeptical of using this route to introduce students to quantum physics, but now I realize that it is much more successful than a traditional approach towards the mathematics of quantum. After working with Quantum Challenge, my students had a better understanding of quantum physics than they would have if we had spent four weeks trying to teach differential equations and linear algebra to them.

The book does include some math and is not for a complete beginner in quantum mechanics. Before reading it, you should understand bra-ket notation and have enough quantum mechanics to do simple one-dimensional problems, but after that, dive into the arcane and fascinating world of the quantum.

An honest presentation of the puzzles in Quantum Mechanics.......2005-10-03

This is the only pedagogical book I have seen that tries to explain the issues in interpreting Quantum Mechanics without trying to sell the reader on a philosophical direction first. The authors just try to explain the implications and rationale behind QM as it is today, without promoting a "new direction". I think this is extremely useful - even if you want to go somewhere else, it helps to know where you are, to start.

There is a lot of discussion of the relevant experiments and the issues they settle (and raise). This is rather grounding.

The reader will need a good undergraduate-level capability in mathematics and previous exposure to quantum physics, in order to make real progress with this book. I think this is unavoidable, as QM is inherently mathematical. Given this background, the reader should find this book clear and well filled-out.

(I am writing about the 1st edition - I'm not sure how the 2nd edition differs.)

Great book........2005-01-01

I had Professor Zajonc for my Modern Physics class. He assigned some readings from his book; I don't think anyone read it. They should have because this book is immensely readable and it was a LOT better than his lectures. I think I learned more reading this book than going to class, which admittedly I didn't do very often.

This book is an excellent bridge between popular accounts of quantum mechanics, which focus on the consequences but have no math in them at all, and technical accounts, which are all math. This book is a good medium. If you have knowledge of undergraduate math and physics you should be able to get through this book.

The Quantum Challenge.......2003-06-17

This is the best book available, by far, on experimental results of the quantum measurement problem. It is one of the few books that are beyond popular accounts, which generally do not have the depth necessary to understand the measurement problem, and - on the other hand - very technical quantum optics volumes. I give it my highest recommendation for anyone with some science background to become acquainted with the quantum measurement problem in detail. It is a triumph and comprehensive in its coverage and reference to quantum measurement experiments. Every scientist should read this book.
