One suspects that this book may wind up on the scrapheap of forgotten political artifacts with copies of Barry Goldwater's campaign speeches and Ross Perot's bar charts. Nevertheless, presidential candidates Bob Dole and Jack Kemp have plenty to say and they say it with plenty of detail in Trusting the People. For those who are not already bored with the campaign and for those with a taste for political arcana and losing campaign manifestoes, this just about fits the bill.

Vision for Creating an America at its Fullest Potential.......1999-03-01
A wonderful, vibrant, and energetic treatise on the Republican vision for a Better America. Packed with specificity not often seen by presidential candidates, Bob Dole and Jack Kemp lay out exactly what they would do if elected as President and Vice President, respectively. They provide their reasons for policy ideas and explain how and why they would work to unleash the full potential of the American Economy. The book is well structured, starting out by laying out the ideas of the Dole-Kemp Economic Plan and its goals. The remainder of the book is devoted to elaborating on those ideas, with it folded together into a cohesive framework in the conclusion. I closed the book feeling refreshed and optimistic for the future of America. But I was also saddened by the fact that Dole and Kemp never had the opportunity to demonstrate the efficacy of their vision. I would recommend this book to conservatives and non-conservatives alike. Conservatives will be inspired by the Dole-Kemp vision for a more Prosperous America. Non-conservatives will perhaps gain insight into the heart of Republican ideals, possibly even dispelling some common myths about the GOP - e.g. lacking compassion, favoring the rich, etc.
Book Description
In this lively and original book, Sam Girgus offers a fresh look at films such as The Searchers, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It's a Wonderful Life, High Noon, and On the Waterfront. He shows how they are part of the cultural and historic debate that examines, structures, and questions what modern America means to its people, the world, and history.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting and thorough reading for Buffett fans.......2007-04-13
I'm extremely surprised to see the negative reviews below. Although I agree somewhat with most of the comments, the overall reviews of this book are unfair and almost bordering on mean and nasty.
I'll agree that the writer has his opinions about the albums, but a simple pinch on the arm and personal reality check by any Parrot Head will reveal that each has his or her own opinion too. I don't have any problem reading this authors opinions, especially since he backs up what he is talking about with explanations. And his opinions aren't off-base at all; actually they're quite accurate and on-target.
I've noticed that some Parrot Heads are afraid to say anything critical of Jimmy's music, even though some albums are lower in quality than others. Fans of any music should be free to point out these things without fear of anger or reprisal. I value this author's openminded and fair approach to the reviews. He neither slams albums nor worships them as some kind of sacred objects. I genuinely feel that Jimmy could read this and not be bothered, but would probably smile and even nod his head.
Really, this is an interesting book, covering basically all aspects of Jimmy's life and music, since his birth, through the release of Banana Wind. Any Parrot Head should find interesting and useful information here. There is much information beyond the album reviews.
I guess if you're narrowminded, or easily offended, you aren't mature enough for this book. Everyone else though should get it. The reader may have started out with little familiarity of Buffett, but it's clear he spent a lot of time researching Jimmy, and ended up getting a great perspective on what he and his music are all about. Well worth the money.
Not a gift for Parrot Heads.......2006-01-06
I got this book from a well meaning spouse for Christmas 2005. I have been a Parrot Head for the last 7 years. I did not like this book. The only part of this book that I found worth reading was the part after each album's review, the author wrote a few paragraphs about what was going on in Jimmy's life or with the record companies at the time that the album was recorded and released. I found the historical background interesting. The second part of the book was devoted to reviewing the books that Jimmy has written. The reviews were way to long and to me, seem self serving. Other than that, not worth your time.
This book in short is horrible........2003-12-13
This book has a terrible title. First of all, it is not a "Companion." I'm sure Ryan is a nice guy, but I found myself cringing at his insight. Second of all, the guy went to 2 Jimmy Buffett concerts. Many of us do that in year. How is he an "insider"?
I hate to be negative, but this book is awful. The only interesting chapter is the very last one where we get to see a confrontation with Marvin Gardens himself! All that Thomas Ryan does in this book is review all of his albums. WELL! Let people listen for themselves. Sorry Thomas, this book was not something you should have taken on.
Buffett Reviews.......2000-12-21
The Parrot Head Companion's title is really a misnomer as the book is for people who are more casual fans of Jimmy Buffett, but not the devotees that real parrot heads are. Thomas Ryan advises that he was not a big Jimmy Buffett fan before he started writing the book, but grew to become one. The book reviews all of Mr. Buffett's albums and you get an honest take from the author. If you have never been to Jimmy Buffett concert, you get a feel of what it's like to be there. The book is quick and easy to read as you can skip around the chapters. Hardcore parrot heads may be put off by the book, but if you area fan of Mr. Buffett, this is nice book to have on yourself.
Not Bad for an Un-Parrot Head.......2000-07-07
Thomas Ryan has attempted to become an "insider" with this book, but it is obvious that he is writing this as an assignment and not a passion. Ryan does, however, present some basic Buffett facts, but his evaluation of Buffett's music is exactly that-HIS EVALUATION.

Book Description
Ed Gorman's western stories are anything but ordinary. They often take place in lonely, tragic, mythical landscapes.
Editors Bill Pronzini and Martin H. Greenberg have selected nine of Ed Gorman's best short stories as they appeared in a variety of magazines. Gorman can truly be called the "renaissance writer of western stories."
Book Description
Dive Into Python is a hands-on guide to the Python language. Each chapter starts with a real complete code sample, proceeds to pick it apart and explain the pieces, and then puts it all back together again in a summary at the end.
Python is a new and innovative scripting language. It is set to replace Perl as the programming language of choice for shell scripters, and for serious application developers wanting a feature rich yet simple language to deploy their products in.
This book is not for newbies, for wimps, or for dummies™. It assumes a lot about you:
- You know at least one real object-oriented language, such as Java, C#, or Delphi.
- You know at least one other scripting language, such as Perl, Visual Basic, or Javascript.
If you’re just getting started programming, that doesn’t mean you can’t learn Python. Python is an easy language to learn, but you should probably learn it somewhere else. That said,
Dive Into Python will be a guide for people who can jump into languages fast and get going.

Customer Reviews:
good dive.......2007-10-01
nice examples to dive into and get a whole view of the language in very short time. but not recommended for newcomers in programming.
Quick approach.......2007-08-06
Although this book is only a quick approach to python it makes the reader have a good background to continue learning python on itself.
Excellent gateway book for Python.......2007-07-29
Having learned Perl first in my programming career, I pretty much ignored Python from the start. Perl's "TMTOWTDI" (There's More Than One Way To Do It) philosophy, coupled with the strange (to me) way that Python enforced blocking (with indention) kept Python in my peripheral vision for quite some time. Over the years, I've become more and more curious about Python, and decided to give it a shot. After a little browsing, I chose the curiously titled Dive Into Python. Dive Into Python may be an old book (the book was originally published in 2004), but it still stands as a great gateway for programmers from other languages to get a good sense of what Python is and how they can apply their current knowledge to learning the Python language.
Dive Into Python is the name of author Mark Pilgrim's site for learning Python. The text of the book is available, as are links to other great resources for learning Python. I noticed no differences between the print version and the published version. I have to commend the author on making his book freely available in electronic form as well as print form because it allowed me the freedom to have the book with me wherever I needed it, and increased the value of the book.
One of the major strengths of Dive into Python is the author's use of other languages to teach Python. The book contains examples from Perl, Java and Visual Basic to elaborate concepts familiar to all four languages. This helped me to use my knowledge from these other languages to grasp both the similarities and differences between the languages. When discussing dictionaries in Python, the author gives three comparisons, starting with Perl: "A dictionary in Python is like a hash in Perl. In Perl, variables that store hashes always start with a % character. In Python, variables can be named anything, and Python keeps track of the datatype internally." Directly beneath that is the comparison for Java programmers: "A dictionary in Python is like an instance of the Hashtable class in Java." Visual Basic follows: "A dictionary in Python is like an instance of the Scripting.Dictionary object in Visual Basic." Other books have done this, but what makes this especially friendly is how the author separates this from the text, so you don't miss it. Each of these examples is in a bullet list, rather than embedded in the text for brevity (I can easily see an author abbreviating the above as "Perl uses hashes, Java uses Hashtables, and Visual Basic uses Scripting.Dictionary", which could easily be missed).
Dive Into Python is comprised of the the following chapters: Installing Python, Your First Python Program, Native Datatypes, The Power Of Introspection, Objects and Object-Orientation, Exceptions and File Handling, Regular Expressions, HTML Processing, XML Processing, Scripts and Streams, HTTP Web Services, SOAP Web Services, Unit Testing, Test-First Programming, Refactoring, Functional Programming, Dynamic functions, and Performance Tuning. Most chapters have a similar format, generally starting with code for a specific projects. As with most any book, these projects are canned projects, ranging from printing methods in doc strings, printing ID3 info in a directory of MP3 files, or doing a simple Google search from the command line. The examples are complete, working programs, and the introduction of foreign concepts explained in the chapter really helped my learning process out. My natural curiosity took over, so I would find myself flipping back and forth in the chapter to see where the line of code, or idiom was used in the beginning program and start understanding how and why that piece of code worked. The author also makes a point whenever he uses a particular idiom from Python to note the last time it was used, or where it was introduced. I found it exceptionally helpful, though the technique lends itself better to an electronic format than it does in a printed book. Another useful technique is the bulleted list. A quick (and very abridged) example would be where the author is initially describing lists:
>>> li = ["a", "b", "mpilgrim", "z", "example"] (1)
(later on in the example)
(1) First, you define a list of five elements. Note that they retain their original order. This is not an accident. A list is an ordered set of elements enclosed in square brackets.
The above example is just a small taste of the format. For me this was a very helpful approach to understanding what each line was doing, and allowed the author to show the code first, and then explain the parts he wanted to elaborate more in the bulleted lists.
Dive Into Python is an excellent tutorial for learning the Python Language. The author is quick to point out new concepts and idioms of the language in a way that is both clear and at times very witty. The author also conveys his enjoyment of the language in a non-threatening and patient way, which makes Dive Into Python an excellent tutorial for those who are, like me, already familiar with other languages, and want to know more about Python. My only complaint about Dive Into Python is that there hasn't been an update since 2004 to this great text. Perhaps when Python 3000 is released, the author will once again revisit this book. As it stands, I highly recommend anyone looking for a good introduction to Python check out Dive Into Python.
Brilliant Python introduction for experienced programmers.......2007-05-12
Definitely aimed at experienced programmers this books uses a very interesting approach to teach Python. Each chapter starts with a coding example that the author explains in a lot of detail, showing the most important language constructs and the best way to solve problems using Python.
Easy to study.......2007-03-23
When studing a programming language from a textbook you often have to switch back an forth from the book to a computer to test some example or dig out some doubt. I was really pleased to see that you don't need to do it with this book.
The text covers python very well (IMHO), but also touches XML parsing, web services, test-first programming, performance tuning and other techinques that I found very useful.
It is also quite funny to read...

Don't Be Fooled.......2000-05-04
_100 Events_ turns out to be, sadly, a pretty shallow overview of world events. Readers anticipating a companion to, say, _The 100 Most Influential People_, will find themselves disappointed.
To its credit, _100 Events_ does include a few events outside the canon of Western history -- the rule of Asoka, the destablization of Iran, and two or three others. But each of the top events that shaped our world is treated so lightly -- a single page, most of which is taken up by an illustration -- that one may well wonder what notice, if any, the author would give to the next 100.

Could have been better.......2007-04-14
I bought this book in the belief that it would describe 100 selected inventions that shaped world history and also analyze how and why. However, the descriptions of the inventions were brief, they did not spend a lot of thought on the selection, and there was no analysis of why a certain invention had shaped history. It was a thin book written for children and young adults rather than adults. This is not necessarily bad, but was not what I expected. I still found the book useful and I am reading it to my kids. However, I have two major complaints which compel me to drop some stars.
(1) The selection of the inventions could have been better. The Video Disc, Velcro, Xerography, Teflon, the piano, the Dewar flask, the sundial and the inclined plane are all in here, but not paper (T'sai Lun), irrigation, the alphabet, the electric generator, stainless steel, integrated circuit, internet, or air conditioning.
(2) There are some glaring errors in the book. An example is #68 the theory of relativity. First it is a little odd that a scientific theory/discovery is listed together with inventions, but let me quote some errors.
First they claim that the theory of relativity was published in its basic form in 1909, the correct year is 1905.
Last sentence of the first paragraph: "He also theorized that the speed light travels, which we understand as 186,000 miles (299,330 km) per second, is not absolute". Too bad it is exactly the opposite. The theory of relativity is based on the fact that the speed of light in vacuum is absolute.
First sentence third paragraph: "The essence of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity is that if matter is converted into energy, the energy released can be shown in the formula E = mc2". Too bad, but that is NOT Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. E=mc2 is a consequence of the special theory of relativity and the E=mc2 paper was published in Annalen der Physik 1905 (p639-p641). The General theory of relativity was published 1915 and had to do with Gravitation and space/time curvature. The authors are mixing up the theories.
The Laser #88: In the second paragraph they try to explain stimulated emission which is the principle behind the Laser. Well this paragraph is not even wrong, it's nonsense.
So in conclusion, it is not a bad book, it is useful, but it could have been a much better book if the authors had tried a little harder to get it right.
Nice little book.......2001-11-29
This is a nice little book, easily read in one or two sittings, about mostly technological inventions. There are great pictures and/or prints, and clear explanations, even for those who are technologically-challenged. Each invention takes up only one page. Quite suitable for kids ten and up, and adults who want a quick introduction or reference book. I enjoyed it, and passed it on to my unix supervisor son. Some really interesting stuff here.
This is a great book........1999-02-19
This book contains inventions from all around the world from microchips to fire. This is a really good book if you are going to do research on inventions.
Book Description
During Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Louis Cataldie remained in New Orleans in dangerous and often unbearable conditions to attend to the sick, the injured-and the dead. As chief coroner of Baton Rouge, tending to the dead is Cataldie's job. A little town with big-city problems, Baton Rouge means "Red Stick"-and lives up to its bloody name. Cataldie has faced unusual and disturbing cases, from tracking three serial killers on the loose simultaneously while working the scene of a Malvo/ Muhammad Beltway Sniper shooting, to helping apprehend Baton Rouge serial killer Derrick Todd Lee in a controversial case that was featured in an ABC Primetime Live special with Diane Sawyer and Patricia Cornwell.
Cataldie's maverick ways have made him a favorite target of the media, but he offers no apologies, and speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves. Graphic and frank, this is his unique, up-close look at his life spent stalking death in the Deep South.
Customer Reviews:
A nice first effort, but falls short.......2007-09-25
This book is, for the most part, as deep as a conversation - like what you'd hear over dinner or having a beer - more than it is a real examination of the coroner's role and duties.
Don't get me wrong, this is a really nice first effort, but I come away feeling like I have not learned much about Dr. Cataldie or his office.
We learn that he takes his work seriously, it's a tough job and you can't let it get to you.
Don't get me wrong, I personally know people with similar positions, and it is a tough, demanding job that takes a toll most people will never realize. I wish everyone could understand the sacrifices Dr. Cataldie and others like him make each and ever day.
However, I do a little professional writing myself, and the most important lesson: Show, don't tell. Take us with you, don't just describe the trip. You got real close, particularly in the Conclusion chapter when he talks about some of the regular people who have needed his professional services. I'd like to hear more about them.
So for that Katrina book I hope you're working on, dig deep, buddy. I know you can do it.
Gripping Insight.......2007-08-25
This was an excellent forensic case book. Not only do you get excellent cases but you also get the author's down to earth personality, concern for life and true emotions. If you enjoy forensic novels and case books - This is a definite must read!!
A fabulous read!.......2007-05-14
I was totally involved with reading this book. I couldn't put it down until I had finished it.
Very in depth, very well written, really does show the steps a coroner goes thru in a death and crime situation.
I felt as if I were on the investigating team. It really is a very good book, including much about the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area.
Great read.......2007-05-08
This is book that is hard to put down. Cataldie takes you with him to crime scenes. He is a very detailed writer. I would love to find more books like this.
Review of Book by Louis Cataldie.......2007-01-10
I am a true crime afficionado and found this one especially interesting because I live near Baton Rouge, and it gave more details about some high profile cases which you never heard on the local news. I also appreciated his perspective on the nature of his work.
