        5 out of 5 stars I'm hooked.......2006-03-23

I just finished reading a copy from my library. I went to Amazon to find out where I could find the next several chapters in the storyline. The only drawback to this graphic novel is that I don't see a continuation of the story, although there is 166 pg. worth of story. It isn't like you feel you just started the journey before it ends.

The graphics are fantastic with just a wee bit too much gore. I would rate the book at a PG-13 level. Since I can't find the next installment of Ninja Boy, I will be looking for other books by Ale Garza.

The story is really strong and original. You follow a boy ninja as he tries to avenge the death of his fellow Mungen ninjas. He hooks up with a funny little sidekick named Sake who loves to drink. The story contains a little fantasy with a little video game martial arts with special powered kicks right out of Street Fighter.

3 out of 5 stars Like the Enquirer.......2007-08-17

I wouldn't say this book is a stomach-turner. Rather, it reads more like a salacious novel, or some daily celebrity mag... You read it and think to yourself - could that REALLY be true? It seems so gossipy in some spots you wonder. But, it is an interesting read. The parts on Mussolini and Napoleon do read very well, the parts on Hitler and Mao a bit over the top. Some of the inferences - like all of the Nazi elite being gay - seems too much for me. Plus, I've read quite a few biographies on the individuals in this book, and some of the stuff in here is news to me - which makes me question how authentic it is.

Not a bad book, and a super fast read. I won't buy any other books in the series, though. If you want to know about the sex lives of these people, I'd recommend just picking up an in-depth biography. These short blurbs on each dictator read more like sexy book reports in comparison.

        1 out of 5 stars Disgusting.......2002-09-08

Although I do not have a weak stomach, this book is one of the most disgusting books I have ever read. Especially the chapters on Mao Tse-tung and Hitler are repellent. The chapter on Mussolini is the only one that has some "funny" passages. Il Duce "rarely bothered with a bed, preferring to do it on the floor or against the edge of his desk. The act was perfunctory. He would not bother to take off his trousers or his shoes. The whole thing would be over in a minute or two." The book starts with Napoleon and ends with Saddam `Abu Ali' Hussein.

In stead of this book, I would recommend Cawthorne's "Sex Lives of the Kings and Queens of England". Compared with the dictators, those Kings were decent men!

5 out of 5 stars Adds new meaning to men of power........2000-02-14

Did you ever picture Hitler as a great lover? Think of napoleon has someone women swooned over? Imagine Castro as a playboy? Well then you might want to take the time and read Nigel Cawthorne's Sex Lives of the Great Dictators.

Take a look at what men of power did to make women come at their beckon call. See how the powerful and ruthless tyrants controlled the fairer sex. Read about the exploits of those who ruled with an iron fist, but in private were all together different.

Men like Saddam Hussein, Marcos, Castro, Idi Amin, Napoleon, Lenin and others are all included in a tantalizing, alluring and yet some how romantic set of stories. Cawthorne continues his success of Sex lives books with this installment.

Trafalgar Square Book's website is a wonderful collection of this and so many other books. It is easy to navigate and you'll be sure to find something to appeal to your taste. This book, like other in the series, is priced to fit most budgets and overall this would make a good gift.

          Book Description

Steve Reinke is at it again! This book is a must for those of us who admire Reinke's elegant, witty, minimal, plain-faced and archly flat-footed forays into making queer video - in all senses of the word. This book presents text and images from thirteen videos from 1996 to 2004. An intervview conducted by Mike Hoolboom cleverly touches on each tape in turn, constructing an independent and quirky view of Reinke's video production. Reinke remains a master of the sound bite, of the non sequitur and of sampling: a sort of sad nostalgia animates these itty-bitty send-ups - as well as his commentary - and muddles them into a delirious cocktail of signifiers in collusion. This book about video is ultimately a book about words, and it makes - unpredictably - a great read. -AA Bronson

          Book Description

The Ultimate Guide to Geek Culture There's never been a better time to be a geek. After decades, if not centuries of persecution, ridicule and never, ever getting the girl, geeks are hot. They are scientists, programmers, artists, musicians, actors, videogamers, skateboarders and architects. They have risen above unimaginative educational systems, hostile social environments, and conventional employers to develop the most liberating, global, inventive and democratic culture on the planet. They are geeks and their time has come. Geek Chic begins by tracing the rise of Geek culture particularly in movies, television, music and media and goes on to present an extensive timeline of geek history over the millennia with short biographical sketches of O.G.'s (original geeks), such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Spike Jonze.

4 out of 5 stars amusing guide to technology inspired culture.......2005-12-20

Here is a hilarious excursion into a segment of contemporary culture. The book goes into the byways of numerous references to trends, fads and events of the last 30 years. Test your recall of your own experiences in these times.

The Geek in the title refers to an emphasis on technology. While by no means all the pages are devoted to this, it certainly provides a constant theme. Thus, you can see the pathetically puny computers of the early 80s, lovingly depicted. Along with descriptions of key persons like Bill Gates. He looks so young in one photo! Within which is the backdrop of a computer room stuffed with clunky IBM PCs.

5 out of 5 stars this is a really good book.......2007-07-04

After skimming a sad stack of "learn how to create web pages" books I found this. It isn't so basic as to be close to useless, nor an impenetrable tome of code. It is an excellent introduction which provides the big picture--it is easier to learn how to do something when you understand how it works--and step by step details for those new to xhtml. Don't be fooled by the cheesy design of the cover. This is a well-written book for intelligent beginners and the best choice in this category.

3 out of 5 stars Not For Absolute Beginners is a better title.......2006-05-20

I am a true beginner, wondering how the heck to get a simple website started. I read the first 5 chapters, and I still don't know. Some very basic information seems to be missing, such as "How do I get the info from my computer to my web page? Can I preview what I'm doing? etc."

5 out of 5 stars Best book for learning html code.......2004-08-10

I read this book three times then coded my first site. I knew nothing about html prior to reading the book.

It was fantastic to read a book that not only explained in fairly plain English what each tag is and how it works, it showed easy examples and lessons to follow.

Highly recommend this book to those who want to create their own website!

5 out of 5 stars The title is misleading.........2004-05-02

Sounds like a 'for dummies' book but is very far from it. Saying 'web pages' is simplified. This book covers site design from scratch minus the details and makes simple work of a convoluted subject. It doesn't show you simple web page stuff but is a complete outline of the entire web site design/development field. Incredible. From this, I can choose what complexities I wish to delve into further without chasing after marginally useful technologies. Being in the computer field since before PC's, I prefer simple straightforward explanations and find techspeak boring. For a book written in latter 2003, I find it far more current than some 2004 books I've seen. the future of the web is moving to simplified (thank you!) and being versed in structured computer development, this is the first time I've been able to garner any excitement for web design.
I've read all the IBM manauals I care to. This book does not talk down to you but it does cover from the basics. Not for the AOL user but more for a Compuserve sort. I'm so glad I chose this as my intro. My only gripe is the additional 'online' chapters located on the publisher's website were to be download files so I expected a pdf or something but instead found viewable pages sans the 'figures' (pictures) accompanying the text. Also, the author refers FAQs and things to his personal website which no longer exists. not kool. But the book's merits (including the price) still warrant 5 stars in my book.

Using advanced statistical techniques to analyze each national election of the Weimar era, Childres offers a new and challenging interpretation of who voted for Hitler's NSDAP and why. He also provides a systematic examination of Nazi campaign strategy.

          Book Description

Years ago, David Freedberg stumbled across a group of drawings by the little-known Academy of Linceans, a seventeenth-century Italian group that took as its task nothing less than the pictorial documentation of all of nature. Moving across Europe, he encountered thousands of such drawings—of fossils, the species of the New World, or the heavenly bodies studied by the group's most famous member, Galileo Galilei. Profusely illustrated and engagingly written, this book reveals this crucial moment in the development of natural history.

          5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book.......2002-12-20

This book, by David Freedberg, tells the fascinating story of Freedberg's discovery, on a tip from the notorious spy and brilliant art historian Anthony Blunt, of a group of amazing antique drawings stashed away in an obscure cupboard in Windsor Castle. The images, gracefully drawn and beautifully colored, depicted a bizarre range of flora and fauna: deformed lemons with claw-like legs, flamingoes, dramatic portraits of badger faces, strange plants...

The discovery marked the beginning of a great adventure told in the book--of Freedberg's search for and discovery of the source of the drawings: a 17th-century gang of noblemen and eccentrics based largely in Rome who took as their mission nothing less than the discovery, analysis, and visual record of all natural knowledge. They called themselves the Accademia Lincea, or Academy of Lynxes. This was the age of Galileo, who was in fact a member, and whose work the Lincea edited and published. With the aid of microscopes, telescopes, and other instruments, the Lincea and their peers began to develop a picture of the natural world in all its details that profoundly challenged traditional views of Heaven and Earth, supported by the Roman Catholic Church.

Freedberg's manner is at once learned and accessible. He tells a gripping story of a group of fascinating characters, some brilliant, some insane, and their grand projects, including a decidedly obsessive interest in bees. Lavishly illustrated in color and black-and-white, this is surely one of the most attractive, novel, and important works of history this year.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN SCIENCE AND ITS HISTORY.......2002-12-19

Rich in breathtakingly beautiful illustrations (83 color plates, 89 halftones) "The Eye of the Lynx" is a must-have for those with a penchant for science and its history.

We are told that author Freedberg, an art history professor and director of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University, once happened upon a neglected cupboard in Windsor Castle holding hundreds of intricately precise drawings of plants and animals dating from the Old and New Worlds. He was acting on the word of Anthony Blount, an art historian and British spy. These drawings had been hidden and forgotten since the days of King George III.

Later, after coming across countless more throughout Europe, Freedberg discovered their provenance - a small 17th century scientific group. Based in Italy it was called the Academy of Linceans for Lynx-eyed.

This optimistic organization set as their goal the representation of all nature in pictures. The mighty task of the Linceans is recounted for the first time in English in this wondrous book. They, unlike their predecessors, focused on internal structures rather than external appearances.

For its time, one of the most outre ideas proposed by the Linceans was the microscope. They simply turned Galileo's telescope around and exposed a once invisible world.

Freedberg has rendered an enormous service in bringing to light this integral portion of the development of visuals as related to natural history.
