A great book viewing higher ed history from a human level........1998-08-19
A great book, providing a very human view of the development of higher education. Andrew Rice is the perfect vehicle to explore Oxford, Tulane, and several experimental curricular attempts at collegiate education. Reynolds is a gifted writer. Her research is deep, her charactors compelling.

Religion and Film: An Introduction
ASIN: 0275964655 |
Book Description
The Christian faith has had a powerful impact on every sphere of art in the West. While the Church, particularly in the United States in the 20th Century, cautions against the potential dangers of film as a corrosive influence on society, films emerge which are recognized as masterpieces of Christian art. In this original new book, Peter Fraser analyzes "sacramental" films, where the narrative has been disrupted and redeemed by a divine presence, in an analogy to Christian liturgical and devotional patterns. This presence transforms the film's narrative into the most recognizable of all Christian narrative patterns: the Passion. Fraser examines the films which best portray Christ's Passion, and he provides a theoretical discussion of this unique and neglected genre of filmmaking. Chapters offer a close reading of important films with spiritual content, including On the Waterfront, Diary of a Country Priest, Hardcore, The Mission, Andrej Rublev, Black Robe, You Only Live Once, and Rome, Open City. Fraser concludes with a chapter on the development of the Biblical epic. Most reading for students and scholars interested in the confluence of popular studies and film with modern expressions of religion.

The Good Doctor Strikes Again.......1999-12-02
Hooray for doctor Fraser, scholar supreme of the film world. Can't wait for his upcoming short story collection, "Old Girlfriend Stories." All in all, "Images" is a balanced study. Cheery-o.
Highly recommended.......1999-10-08
I liked it. Nice discussion of Scorsese's "Last Temptation." Fair coverage of subject matter.
Book Description
Are you "Hot Blooded"? A "Ramblin' Man"? "Do You Believe in Magic"? This exciting new series sheds fresh light on the power of the stars. Rhino Records, the leader of great music retrospective collections, and Chronicle Books have come together to assemble this astrological extravaganza. Colorful and vibrant, each of the twelve packages (one for every sign of the zodiac) contains a book as well as a tell-it-like-it-is CD with songs reflecting characteristics of that sign. If it's written in the stars, it's written in these pages--everything from personality assessment to insight into the work, home, style, health, and love arenas. Heed the valuable advice for avoiding potential relationship fiascos (Capricorns and Aries: steer clear!) and learn from references to famous couples. Discover why the Libra/Aquarius couple John Lennon and Yoko Ono came together blissfully while the volatile Scorpio/Sagittarius duo of Ike and Tina turner sent sparks flying. All this and more, plus a personalized CD that will have the sentimental Cancer reflecting on "This Magic Moment" by the Drifters and the honest and sincere Virgo jamming out to Aretha Franklin's "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing." Cosmic Grooves is not only an astrological guide to life but also the soundtrack for the journey.
Customer Reviews:
Too much romance !.......2004-03-25
I am new to astrology and recently purchased the Cosmic Grooves book on my sign,Aquarius. The book gives a brief overview of the Aquarian personality, but nothing that I had not read before. My main complaint is that 26 of the 47 pages are dedicated to describing every possible romantic combination between Aquarians and the other signs. If this information interests you, you might find the book worth your while, but I don't think it's worth the asking price. I bought my copy for $3, mainly because I think the CD is a clever idea and I like some of the songs on it. I agree with the previous reviewer; if you're really interested in astrology, invest your money in something more substantial.
What a Great Gimmick! Wish I'd Thought of It!.......2002-03-01
This is a little CD sized hardcover mini-book that is one of a 12 part series featuring all of the signs of the zodiac and it comes with a CD. I'm Pisces so I chose to review the Pisces book and CD. I've also been an astrologer for over 30 years so while I'm envious of the money making power of this clever gimmick package, I must say it is light-weight pop astrology on a par with the newspaper astrology columns and that's about it. There is cursory coverage of the "typical" Pisces, Pisces at work, in careers, in love, in relationships, home, health, style, entertaining, etc. The information found in the 47 short pages of text is accurate as far as it goes and provides a good sketch of the Piscean archetype. The book is accompanied by a music CD containing 12 tunes by twelve different artists each corresponding with a trait attributed to the Piscean character. Some of the tunes hit the mark pretty well while others are obscure and contrived. For example for the "appreciative" trait the selection is "Thank You For Being a Friend" by Andrew Gold...pretty good choice, however the tune for the trait "Empathetic" is "I Can Help" by Jo-El Sonnier and I really don't think the point of that song is empathy but alludes to a more hands-on approach to caring, if you get my drift. If the song choices on this collection of book/CD sets were better...and they easily could be...I would applaud this as a wonderful innovative way to teach Astrology, however as it is I think a person would be better off spending half the money on a good astrology book that covers all the signs not just one, and taking the other half of the money and buying a used CD that REALLY suits you. One very good thing about this is that it comes from Rhino Records so at the least the tunes aren't cheesy remakes. I've checked out all twelve of the sets in this series and the same comments would apply to all twelve.
Interesting Reading but............2001-11-26
This is my first review so it might sound wierd, anyway. I read this book in Borders bookstore, so before you consider buying the book think about the pages you have to read for the amount you have to pay. I think it's a good book to read while someone is on their launch break but that's it. It's 48 pages but I read the whole book in less than a half hour. They do have a CD but most of the songs on their I already heard so it's not worth me paying that much money. Just think about it before you buy. It's a good book, interesting to read but not worth 15.95 in the bookstore or 12.95 here.
Book Description
In this exciting new book, you will find out what goes on in the minds of great bridge players. Twelve important areas of cardplay have been chosen, involving both declarer play and defence. For those not in the know, the various plays appear to be inspired, but they are in fact the result of cold hard logic. Learn the correct thought processes yourself and your cardplay will improve significantly.
Customer Reviews:
Assorted Declarer play techniques.......2007-08-17
I liked the hands and the tips on how to play certain types of situations. Solid Intermediate level book, though its got a couple of chapters on squeezes (mostly Simple or Double Squeezes). Card reading also plays its part.
The only real pain in the neck was all the hands were exposed,a s oppose dto just the declarer and dummy. I prefer to first look at a problem "realisticly" ratehr than noding my hed and reading what the author wrote. In practice what this meant was I had to block out the defender hands with my big thumbs, which was ratehr awkwards.
I still recommend the book, studying non-trivial declarer play technique is always worthwhile.

Customer Reviews:
this book is a waste of good paper.......2007-09-13
I have been condicting ethical hacking for 3 years and this book was such a let down, it falls well short in providing and good detailed content. Basically its the kind of stuff you learn on day 1 and shows no evidence of experience from an author who can hack into systems. My advise is save your money as this book covers nothing you wouldnt find on Google in 5 minutes. You know it is so bad I think I will write my own book.
My advise google, wireshark, nmap and netcat the content you get it 5 minutes will be as good as this book.
Another revolutionary book from a revolutionary author!.......2007-08-18
Now Listen...
I know some of you look at these books as if it's a world of training people to be hackers. Now, maybe these books might create a few bad seeds, but they usually create a lot of good ones..
This book is astounding, I bought this book because I love researching all about hacking, security, and protection. My major is computer science and I am hoping to be a professional white hat security professional, a hacker that is hired to show the flaws in sites.
Now,when people see these books and say...this is madness!! books about hacking?!
I think these books are great. They help you protect yourself, your computer, your company, your website, your server.
This book shows a lot what hackers use...and the more you know about it, the better you can protect yourself. If you think that this trains bad hackers, well we cant change how some people use information. What I can tell you is that a lot of people will be better off with the information in this book for the companies and servers.
This author is excellent!
Great book!
A good guide for the beginner ethical hacker........2006-11-30
There is alot of good knowledge to be learned in this book, but it is very cutthroat and dry. There are almost no "real world" examples of what they talk about, and alot of it talks about using programs that were created for linux.. Otherwise it is a good book, but I have read better.
i love GHH.......2006-04-14
i have read tonnes of books on this subject.starting from secrets of a super hacker by knightmare(published way back in 94, trust me dat was a great read n even 2day i find myself glued to da back as the first time i read it.now coming back 2 gray hat hacking.this is wat i would like 2 call the hacking reference book for the next generation.every one concerned about security should consider picking up this book.u might as well save some money n picking up more knowledge than any of the hacking exposed books in the market.no this book is not for button clicking script kiddies who play around wid trojans n claim to be hackers or web defacers(lamers).if u belong to da breed of script kiddies pick up this disgustin book by ankit fadia (oh by the way ive reviewed it).i wouuld liek to congradulate the authors for the outstanding work put into this book.howeever it would be great to see expanded materials on various topics and a little more detail in tool description.its not bad but it could still be better.so as i said before get dis book u wont regret it.so kiddies grow up keep those hacking exposed n ankit fadias books apart throw em in da firplace burn em do anythin .but go get dis one
laterzzzzzz
Covers more than the typical hacking book.......2006-02-12
"Gray Hat Hacking - The Ethical Hacker's Handbook" is not your normal hacking book. This book should not be lumped in with the "Hacking Exposed" series nor the likes of "Counter Hack". What differentiates Gray Hat Hacking (GHH) from other books is the amount of code the book offers. This book is not for script kiddies, but instead shows how to advance to the next level of hacking (and, more importantly, prevention) by devoting over 100 pages to developing programming skills for both Linux and Window exploits. I had not encountered a book that dedicated this much space to scripting.
The authors take a delicate balance at discussing tools that are well documented in other publications (ettercap, xploit2 & p0f), and mentioning some lesser known tools (sharefuzz, RATS and valgrind). While I believe there is no doubt that the authors know their material, I do agree with other reviewers in wishing GHH was simply expanded. I also like that GHH offers many referrences. Page for page, this book probably received more highlights than any other hacking book I own.
I give this book 4 pings out of 5:
!!!.!

People are alike all over.......2005-07-20
The first thing that hits you looking through this 3 volume set is how ready, willing and able the human race is, world-wide, to kill, kill, kill. If the human race was a car, it would have been sent back to the factory, the schematics destroyed, and the engineers would have started all over again from scratch! Serious design flaws.
Anyway, this set is a (probably brief) catalog of man's inhumanity to man. There is some mention of genocides and crimes against humanity in pre-modern times, but most of the horror takes place in the 20th century & later, where modern weapons make killing easier and more efficient - where perpetrators take pictures & make films of themselves committing atrocities. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. The set is pretty up-to-date, including Darfur, Gujarat, and Abu Ghraib. A depressing glimpse at Planet Earth and it's inhabitants.
Includes black and white photos.

Product Description
Occasionally one comes across a book, which is unexpected, delights and inspires. Surinam, known as the Jewish Savannah, where a vibrant Jewish community was granted full and equal rights two hundred years before the Jews of other communities in the region. St Eustatius, where the economically successful Jewish community was plundered during the British occupation in 1781. Curacao, named the Mother of Jewish communities in the New World, where a prosperous Jewish community comprised nearly half of Curacaos non-slave population and was the center of Jewish life in the region. For all their economic and local political power, the Jews were little more than pawns in the 200-year struggle for control of the Caribbean by Holland, Great Britain, France and Spain. Eventually growing tired of this chess game, the Jews of the Caribbean drifted into assimilation or immigrated to the United States, where life was more secure. An ideal resource and captivating read for those traveling to the region or people with an interest in Jewish history, this is an exceptional book that brings the Jewish communities of the Caribbean to life, with intensity, and with a heartbeat so strong as to secure their proper and rightful place in recorded Jewish history.
Customer Reviews:
Impressive vision of the Caribbean.......2006-02-26
Impressive title, impressive research (of 35 years) and an impressive and so new approach to the Caribbean so affected by the tourist's vision. The author even looked upon the Jewish old cemeteries, an aspect that adds to this book a so mysterious and human touch! I, who come from the Spanish-speaking islands missed a lot more information on Jewish presence in Puerto Rico and other Hispanic islands, no matter a section on Dominican Republic jews is well presented. An open book in this sense.

Excellence In A Small, But Expensive, Package.......2006-07-05
I only have one beef about this book: the price. This book is only 192 pages long but costs more than some 500 page hardback college books. Normally, it would kill this book's buying appeal. Fortunately, this is worth it. Hands Down.
Separated into three sections, this book begins in the most obvious place: understanding the scientific mind of child. It then moves to environment, curriculum, and stage-setting for scientific inquiry. Then it ends with the "how-to" about putting science in the early childhood classroom. Short. Sweet. Simple, but EXTREMELY Detailed.
You know the best part about this book? Again, its simplicity of words. You don't always need 600 pages to teach a teacher how to impliment a strategy in his/her classroom. Sometimes it takes a few pages (like this one).
Give it a try. It may be a little pricey, but I truly believe tha the superb content will soften that blow.
Thoughtful Education.......2000-12-04
Even though the title of this book indicates an emphasis in early childhood education, any teacher can find useful, thought provoking ideas. It is well written, to the point and for teachers who believe that children construct their own knowledge, very supportive. I believe the ideas in the book can apply to any area of teaching.
A Science Teachers Dream!.......2000-10-10
This book is perfect for an elementary school teacher or science teacher. The book talks about the underlying processes that enable each child to learn in their own unique way. Teachers can take the information presented in this book and prepare science lessons that support the learning capabilities of the children. This book also presents numerous case studies and scenarios that give readers a variety of lesson plan ideas while at the same time explain HOW AND WHY the lesson plans best support the children. I am an education major and have found this book to be a wonderful resource for my studies. I know that I will also use this book when I become a teacher and need to put some wonderful ideas into practice.
