I would recommend this book because it made you want to turn the page because the way he used the words in the book. This book showed me that Mario was a devoted person and how much he cared about people. The book inspired me to never give up on anything that you enjoy doing. Book Description

Israeli cinema is a central tool for understanding the contemporary challenges facing Israeli society as it has developed its identity during the past decades. Although films can be considered individual pieces of work, we can gain a unique perspective on the nation's society through a careful analysis of the subject matter, issues, and styles of expression of this unique medium. Since its inception, Israeli cinema has been occupied with the hardships of an ongoing war, problems of Jewish-Arab relations, and the major survival issues of the state. Despite this focus, Israeli filmmaking is in fact much more complex and varied. Indeed, it covers a wide spectrum of issues that have developed during the 70 years during the production of its first feature film. Israeli Film: A Reference Guide provides a survey of all major films made in Israel, as well as biographies of major Israeli filmmakers and an overview essay summarizing major trends in Israeli film--and, in doing so, offers a commentary on social trends, historical challenges, and societal issues.

            Book Description

To boldly go where no Christian book has gone before . . . "Faith Odyssey" is a Bible study unlike any other ever written. Richard Burridge invites readers to explore the journey of faith through fifty short devotional readings that combine Scripture with stories from science fiction and popular culture.

For each day, passages from the Bible are placed alongside stories drawn from literature, television, and film — from Homer's "Odyssey" to Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," from "Star Trek" to "Star Wars," from "Dune" to "The Matrix," from the charms of Narnia to the spells of Harry Potter.

Whereas Burridge's "Faith Odyssey" in an earlier edition was tied to one season of the church year ("a journey through Lent"), it now applies more broadly to anytime throughout the year ("a journey through life"). Imaginative yet deep, Burridge's reflections trace with flair and relevance the Christian pilgrimage against the background of today's world.

Faith Odyssey is an unusual take on the traditional Lenten period of penitence, fasting, and meditation: it's more of an introduction to a whole new way of thinking about salvation. Richard A. Burridge has picked a Bible reading for each day of Lent and teamed it with a sideways glance at the plots and symbolism of his favorite science-fiction films, TV shows, and books.

While the Bible selections are almost all familiar passages, the literary comparisons are often right up-to-date and not always easy to explain--hence the many long interpretations of some complicated film plots. If you're a sci-fi fan, you will adore the detailed references and parallels drawn, and if you're not, you may sometimes wonder why those film studios spend so much money on plot development and special effects when it's all been done before in the epic stories and spectacular events of the Bible. Once you become familiar with the frequent and sudden departures from the world of the Bible into science fiction (as if you're being beamed up to or down from the Star Ship Enterprise every second paragraph), you may begin to feel quite adept at traveling swiftly between these parallel universes. People finding their way through Lent for the first time, or those who want a different perspective, may particularly appreciate this repackaging of Lenten themes in a new light. --Susannah Steel, Amazon.co.uk

            Book Description

Faith Odyssey is a Lent book like none ever written. Richard Burridge here invites readers to journey through the season of Lent with devotional readings that combine Scripture with stories from science fiction and popular culture.

For each day, beginning with Ash Wednesday, passages from the Bible are placed alongside stories drawn from literature, television, and film—from Homer's Odyssey to 2001: A Space Odyssey from Star Trek and Star Wars to Dune and The Matrix, mixing Narnia, Harry Potter, and Pilgrim's Progress—all to illustrate the human journey from the ashes of sorrow to the joy of Jesus' ultimate victory. Burridge's fifty short readings trace with flair and great relevance the Christian pilgrimage against the background of today's world.

Packed with thought-provoking insight into the meaning of the Lenten season, Faith Odyssey truly provides a unique devotional experience.

4 out of 5 stars Lenten devotional with a delightful twist.......2004-01-02

Faith Odyssey contains daily devotionals for Lent and Holy Week. It is devided into weekly themes, starting with "the mess" in which humanity finds itself in on Ash Wednesday and working through a "journey" metaphor in subsequent weeks. Its Biblical analysis and insights are first-rate.

What makes this book unique are the many illustrations and examples drawn from well-known classics of science fiction and fantasy. This will delight fans of this genre and Christians who are looking for a fresh approach to the Lenten Journey.

4 out of 5 stars A winning combination of science fiction and theology.......2001-04-23

With "Faith Odyssey," Richard Burridge has given Christians who harbor a hunger for science fiction and fantasy a true gift! For all forty days of Lent--plus a few days into Eastertide--Burridge draws illuminating, often unexpected, and always delightful parallels between works such as the various "Star Trek" series, the "Star Wars" films, "The Lord of the Rings," and classical mythology and the Christian faith, taking us on a true pilgrimage. This book will be useful to any Christian, but it may prove especially helpful to preachers and teachers looking for "pop culture" illustrative material.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with topics that others don't cover.......2007-08-22

I bought this book about a month ago along with some others on VMware. It definitely covers some critical P to V methods that other books just don't cover. The writing style is pretty good too, not stuffy, and the author is very enthusiastic about VMware, and that comes across well. It is slightly more basic than some, but it's a great book for someone new to VMware who is trying to come up to speed quickly, and learn the product thoroughly. It's not filled with theory, it's got good "in the trenches" anecdotes and real world info, not conjecture put in there just to fill up space. Get it!

This book is based upon ESX 2.5. There are still highly relevant parts of it with regards to tuning, performance, and general concepts. However, it's long in the tooth already--scour the earth for a book about VI or ESX3, and save your money--or better yet, download the free documentation at [...], and save up for your certification class.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-09-04

Are you an IT professional who is managing a sprawling physical server environment? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Al Muller, Seburn Wilson, Don Happe, and Gary J. Humphrey, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows the IT professional how control both costs and headaches, architects and consultants, with an emphasis on server consolidation methodology.

Muller, Wilson, Happe, and Humphrey, begin by walking you through the GUI-based installation method for loading ESX 2.5; as well as, the tasks you'll need to perform before you install ESX and afterward. Then, the authors show you how to build a virtual machine, discuss its basic requirements; as well as, some issues to consider when building virtuals. Next, the authors review some of the advanced configuration possibilities for both your ESX Server and your virtual machines. The authors then expand on the basics of virtual networking. They continue by discussing and walking you through the concepts and methodologies for migrating your physical machines into a virtual environment. Then, the authors focus on how to achieve a successful server consolidation project, concentrating mainly on the people and process aspects of the project. They then discuss some of the very cool tools you need to manage you virtual infrastructure. Next, the authors focus on the administration of a virtual infrastructure. They then discuss some of the best practices, as well as, some that were not covered. They continue by explaining the system architecture of the ESX server to ensure you have a thorough understanding of the underlying components and their dependencies. Then, the authors focus on backup strategies and the different approaches available to ensure you can recover your Service Console and VMs after a disaster. They then focus on the commands that are most likely to be used to manage your ESX Server from the Service Console. Finally, they look at what the future holds.

In this most excellent book, you'll find a lot of step-by-step instructions with associated screenshots that will make your mental transition from the physical world to the virtual world that much easier. More importantly, you'll find that this book is very effective in articulating the people and process components of server virtualization.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent basic book on VMWARE ESX.......2006-05-17

This book was exactly what I expected. A good practical reference for configuring and using VMWARE ESX. Explains the tools well without going into excessive details. This is not a technical reference, it is more of a straightforward how to book.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for the new user, too basic for intermediate user.......2006-04-20

VMware is arguably the best virtualization program available today and I would agree with that opinion. VMware ESX Server is their server virtualization product and just like all of their other products it is a stellar performer. However documentation has never been their strong point and this book tries to resolve that problem. Server virtualization allows multiple server operating systems to reside on the same physical machine and be accessed as though they were separate physical servers. This resolves a multitude of problems including situations where different software servers don't work well on the same physical server. For example, many IT departments will not put Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL on the same production server or generally don't like to run the Web Server, database server, and mail server on the same physical computer.

This book is written so the average computer administrator can easily install Vmware ESX Server on one physical computer and install as many virtual servers as needed or supported by the hardware without any problems. It even includes coverage of how to installs different server operating systems including how to install Linux on one virtual server and Windows 2003 on another on the same physical computer. However, for anything out of the ordinary the information is often not sufficiently detailed to allow the reader to completely setup the component. For example, the section on network card bonding does not contain sufficient information to actually configure it but does point the reader to a white paper on the subject. On the other hand, ESX server installation and basic administration are both well done and these subjects are the main focus of the book. If you are looking for more advanced information then this is not the book you are looking for, but if you are looking for your first book on the subject and just getting your feet wet with the product then Vmware ESX Server is highly recommended.

This is the very best audio tape I've ever listened to. While some interviews are better (Stephen Ambrose) than others (Richard White), each one offers important insight and perspective on the most important events of our time. Through the eyes of these men, our nation's history is told so clearly and succinctly, and with such passion, that you can't help but be changed and moved by the experience. I guarantee you'll come away with a better grasp of who we are and where we're headed as a nation.

4 out of 5 stars Easy U.S. History on the Ears.......2000-07-05

This audiobook is an excellent addition to the U.S. history-buff's glove compartment. There are basically four tapes of interviews by Roger Mudd done for the History Channel. Mudd asks questions to the featured historians and they respond with stories and factoids to keep you thinking. I can listen to them many times and still learn things that I didn't catch the last time around. This is also a great way to brush up on your U.S. history while enriching what you already know.

Even as academics increasingly break down the historical profession into areas of subspecialization, American Heritage continues to satisfy the public demand for "master narratives" of the American experience. The latest tome, Great Minds of History, is a lively collection of question-and-answer sessions conducted by veteran journalist Roger Mudd with five renowned scholars of the American Revolution, the Civil War, the West, the Gilded and Progressive Ages, and the late 20th century.

These conversations (drawn from the transcripts of a TV documentary series) allow each author to expound upon the more significant aspects of his field of expertise. Gordon Wood, for example, airs his controversial thesis that the words of the founding fathers and the egalitarianism of New England artisans made the American republic significantly different from its English progenitor. Other interviews stress the historian's craft in constructing causal relationships between events. When James McPherson is asked if the South came close to winning the Civil War, he offers three fully detailed, plausible scenarios for Confederate independence. Pressed to identify the most important Western historian, Richard White answers, "Buffalo Bill Cody," calling the showman's mixture of fiction and authenticity the first example of postmodern historical thought. David McCollough and Stephen Ambrose also make thoughtful (and occasionally bellicose) contributions to this collection, which should please fans of the History Channel and American Heritage alike. --John M. Anderson

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, just excellent.......2007-09-03

Roger Mudd interviews 5 prominent historians. Interestingly, these are all historians who specialize in writing readable histories that outsell the dense, uninteresting treatises many of us were forced to read in college. These are men who do their research, know their facts but also understand that historians should be, first and foremost, the storytellers - the modern, well-researched equivalent of the old person in the village that memorized the stories of the old days and passed them down.

-Gordon Wood talks about the Revolutionary War/Constitutional era.
-Richard White talks about the American West.
-James McPherson - the Civil War
-David McCullough talks primarily about the late 19th century, but he also veers into other topics - he meanders the most and is, perhaps, the most enjoyable.
Stephen Ambrose talks about World War II, Eisenhower and Nixon.

Along the way, lots of personal observations about the past, the recent past and the present are tossed in and it makes an enjoyable read for any serious readers of history.

5 out of 5 stars Mindful of Great History.......2006-02-03

This was my first audio book. Purchased from Amazon (because they delivered overseas) to keep me company on my daily metropolitan Tokyo commute from Uraga-Cho to Yokosuka Naval Base.

My only complaint is that I wanted more. So compelling are the topics, questions, answers and analysis of assorted aspects of American history, that upon initial trial, you are addicted. GIVE ME MORE! Make a volume 2, please.

I found the period between the Civil War and WW1 most compelling, probably because I was least familiar with this area. Yet I learned it was these decades that truly set America on its path of economic greatness as well the ability to rise to, meet and destroy the forces of fascism, and additionally place the roots for the future expansion of civil liberties. Of course the other topics of American history are gripping too; especially when framed by the discerning questions of Roger Mudd and answered insightfully from great historians. As a bonus we get to listen to the great voices of Roger Mudd, David McCullough, Stephen Ambrose, the others are enjoyable as well.

5 out of 5 stars Interaction with Great Minds.......2001-06-29

Perhaps you saw the television programs or have viewed the videos of one or more of them. Perhaps you have listened to the audiocassettes. In any event, this book consists of a series of thought-provoking questions posed by Roger Mudd which are answered by five of our nation's most eminent historians: Stephen Ambrose, David McCullough, James McPherson, Richard White, and Gordon Wood. Their respective subjects are:

The Colonial Era and Revolution (Wood)

The Civil War and Reconstruction (McPherson)

                  Westward Expansion (White)

                  The Industrial Era (McCullough)

World War II and Postwar America (Ambrose)

Obviously, a reader's specific interests will determine which of the Q&A exchanges are of greatest value. Richard Snow provides an excellent Introduction. His associates at American Heritage are also to be commended for completing background research and then writing profiles of the five historians. Mudd is a skillful interviewer. In book form, inevitably, his style and pace can only be suggested but are in great form when the exchanges are heard or (better yet) seen.

Snow is quite correct when observing that the five-part narrative "is always kinetic, darting, and oblique; and the narrators have at once too high and too close a regard for their subject to sentimentalize it. Nevertheless, the cumulative message is clear and heartening." For Ambrose, here is the clear and heartening message: "this is the best country that ever was. This is the freest and, right now, the most prosperous that has ever been conceived anywhere. And, by God,, somebody had to be doing something right to bring us to this point. I want to celebrate the people who brought us to this point." He does so with passion and eloquence. The perspectives and insights provided by the other historians (whose contributions precede Mudd's exchange with Ambrose) also expand and clarify the context within which our nation's history has evolved from one dynamic era to the next.

5 out of 5 stars Shows How to Make History Come Alive!.......1999-10-07

This book is a fabulous resource for those of us who have tried to explain why the study of history is so important. The "interviewees" show that the best way to present history is by "story telling" about the lives of real people rather than making a dry recitation of facts. All of them are extreemly enthusiastic about their subjects.

                  5 out of 5 stars a truly wonderful book!.......1999-03-30

                    Book Description

The first collection of original contributions on American abolitionism to appear in a generation.

The campaign to abolish slavery in the United States was the most powerful and effective social movement of the nineteenth century and has served as a recurring source of inspiration for every subsequent struggle against injustice. But the abolitionist story has traditionally focused on the evangelical impulses of white, male, middle-class reformers, obscuring the contributions of many African Americans, women, and others.

Prophets of Protest, the first collection of writings on abolitionism in more than a generation, draws on an immense new body of research in African American studies, literature, art history, film, law, women's studies, and other disciplines. The book incorporates new thinking on such topics as the role of early black newspapers, anti-slavery poetry, and abolitionists in film and provides new perspectives on familiar figures such as Sojourner Truth, Louisa May Alcott, Frederick Douglass, and John Brown.

With contributions from the leading scholars in the field, Prophets of Protest is a long overdue update of one of the central reform movements in America's history.

Prophets of Protest is a collection of essays by scholars who are also teachers and local historians. The editors, both young professors at Harvard, gathered the group and facilitated the research by asking each to critique and help the others.
This collection is very gratifying for me as an independent researcher and writer because my work has been to document the support of John Brown, abolitionist, by local African Americans in Virginia, both slave and free, in the Harpers Ferry raid in 1859. Hannah N. Geffert of Shepherd College (now West Virginia) writes "Regional Black Involvement in the John Brown Raid" by showing the geography that made sense of John Brown's plans. The local slaves supported him. They did not cause him to fail. Hannah Geffert writes this evidence in standard academic grounding; she is kind enough to credit my thirty years of research on this topic in her byline.

This book is great for anyone interested in the human history of our counting numbers.Every aspect of global cultural numbers is covered in this awesome book. From the dawn of the human race to the brillant Renaissanse mathematicans and Asian use of spoken nuncupative numbers, this book explains every meaning behind the development of number language systems. There are excellent foreign phrases and words about numbers explained here. We're the only animated being on the planet that records, measures and quantifies units. This is the best tome on why and how all the ancient cultures developed their own unique number symbols and how they evolved, merged or became extinct. If you're a modern numerator who always wondered about the historical meanings and progress of numbers, this book has a jillion examples.

Because numbers have both a physical reference and a spiritual mystery, they are fascinating. This book helps me understand the meaning of number both historically and currently.

If you have a serious interest the theories and cultural symbolism of numbers, this is a solid and still accurate resource. Though originally published in 1969, this book is a well-researched and clear overview of the ideas and concepts behind numerology and number symbolism. Unlike most stuff published today, this books isn't some "solve all your problems with numbers!" collection of nonsense, but an insightful outlook on the origins of number symbolism.

4 out of 5 stars A bit stilted and dense, but fascinating nevertheless.......1999-12-22

Number Words and Number Symbols is a translation of a work originally in German, and it shows. While the discussions of the origins of various cultures and languages' symbols and words for numbers is almost encylopedic in its completion, it can be very stilted reading at times.

If you don't mind sometimes long and verbose reading, then this is certainly one of the best works on the subject out there. I would quibble that Menninger gives the East less coverage than the West, but his comparisons of number words across Indo-European languages is simply fascinating. Also, too are his theories about how the displacement of one language by another in a region can often lead to weird anomalies in number counting.
