Book Description
Russ Conway has worked at the Eagle-Tribune of Lawrence, Massachusetts, since 1967. For more than five years, he pursued the details of this fascinating story, an investigation that focused increasingly on the activities of Canada’s Alan Eagleson, once regarded as the most powerful figure in professional hockey. Conway’s series for the Eagle Tribune, “Cracking Ice,” from which this book was developed has been at the heart of the FBI and US Justice Department investigations that led to the 1994 indictment of Alan Eagleson.
Among other things, Conway’s sensational exposé documents the following:
Eagleson’s defrauding of injured players seeking career-ending disability insurance.
Eagleson’s use of National Hockey League Players’ Association money for questionable and unauthorized loans to friends and associates, one of whom was also his partner in business ventures.
Eagleson’s exploitation of his position as head of the NHLPA and driving force behind the Canada Cup to obtain everything from free clothing to free air travel to France.
Eagleson’s outright theft of Canada Cup money via a scheme that saw Irving Ungerman’s company, All Canada Sports, retain control of end-board advertising during Team Canada games.
Conway’s discovery, while investigating the conduct of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigation into Eagleson that Timothy Lemay, a lawyer on loan from the federal Department of Justice, was working out of the same office in Newmarket, Ontario, as the RCMP, which was collaborating with US authorities. Lemay worked for Eagleson’s law firm; Eagleson had Lemay do work for Hockey Canada; Lemay is Eagleson’s son’s brother-in-law.
Game Misconduct is much more than a sports story: it embraces business, politics, and true crime; indeed, some have called it the biggest scandal in professional sports since the 1919 Chicago White Sox threw the World Series. It is unquestionably among the most impressive and explosive examples of determined, investigative journalism in recent years.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on hockey, ever.......2005-01-21
Those who want to learn about hockey - and not just what Alan Eagleson did to it - should run, not walk, to buy this book.
Conway's book is superb, and his work on Eagleson made him a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
It's a must-read for any sports writer, too. It's like having an "Investigative Journalism 101" class taught to you, and for a fraction of the money you'd pay at a university.
Spectacular Book.......2002-09-25
This is the most interesting book I have ever read. I studied it to do an oral presentation for Grade 9 English class a few years ago and was so intrigured by the Alan Eagleson story that, now in my first year of University, I am pursuing a career very similar to that of Alan Eagleson...one in which I would essentially deal with the business side of the NHL where I would love to make some sort of a positive influence, as Eagleson did. However, Alan Eagleson's corruption, which is described in this book, is an excellent example of how one person can cause a negative influence on many people's lives through illegitimacy and how public opinion of that person can change almost instantly as a result. Russ Conway did an excellent job of investigating Alan Eagleson, and his book is a wonderful summary of his work. I would recommend this book to anybody, whether they are a hockey fan or not.
A Gut Wrenching Account of.......1999-06-21
This is one of the most important sports books ever written. Through his exhaustive work, Russ Conway exposes the greed, corruption and financial swindling that plagued the NHL throughout Alan Eagelson's reign of terror and the financial and emotional price that so many players faced. Most importantly, Conway's work served as the catalyst for Mr. Eagleson's downfall and proving many player's assertions of corruption. Put simply, this is an important piece of journalism that every fan of sports should read, whether you are a hockey fan or not.
Wonderful investigative piece.......1999-02-19
Russ Conway has written a wonderful investigative piece about a man who is truly a disgraceful figure in the history of Canadian hockey. Russ brings forth, with his own agressive style, the wicked ways of a man who calling a crook is an understatement. First, he never backed down to get his answers and his writing is first-rate. Anyone who follows hockey should read about a man who almost destroyed it.
A must-read book.......1998-07-03
All hockey fans owe Russ Conway a debt of gratitude for helping rid hockey of the parasite Alan Eagleson. He documents Eagleson's criminal and disgusting behaviour in great detail, helping fans to better understand what hockey players faced in the past, the necessary background information for many of the issues facing pro hockey today. I haven't read such a gripping book since "Net Worth". Eagleson will be back in the courts again before long, no doubt willing to lie about the charges being brought forward by a number of retired hockey players. Read this book and you'll see that the players have justice on their team.

What's a Criticism?.......2005-02-06
In a 1950 essay, W. H. Auden marvels that Edgar Allan Poe remained a good critic after having been given subjects so inferior to his abilities. In the case of Ian Penman, one wonders why a man as intelligent and widely read chooses to waste his considerable verbal ingenuity and critical acumen on topics so often unworthy of his talent: Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Bovell (who?), Robin Cook, celebrity biographies. In a shrewd essay on Norman Mailer, Penman writes, characteristically, "Sometimes, exhausted, you feel that the world and its malcontents are there only to serve as a metaphor for the Struggle of Being Norman: battered typewriter, liver, lover . . . Mailer." An essay on voyeurism sees Alfred Hitchcock as personifying the "stifling wait of the male gaze."
Although clever and insightful, Penman's essays exhaust like Mailer. By page 300 they drag one down with or without a Hitch. However, with fewer pieces and more overall design, _Vital Signs_ would spring to life-or at least stir. It probably takes more than Augustus Pablo (who?), Tim Buckley, and Jim Thompson to establish that canon of value without which a critic can only carp emptily, but behind the coruscating wordplay about De Niro, Rik Mayall (who?), Was (who?), Steve Martin, heavy metal bands, and host of performers and would-bes often inferior to the Etonesque Penman, there lies a despairing intelligence that could, one suspects, show the reader a, if not the, way.
Of Limited Interest.......2002-10-28
Penman is a "name" critic in England, but the 46 pieces collected in the 370+ pages here offer only glimpses as to why. Culled from his contributions to highly influential UK music/style mags (NME, The Face, and Arena), London newspapers, and UK film mags (Sight & Sound, Modern Review) from the late '70s to mid '90s, the pieces generally cover either musicians, film actors and directors, and writers. A quick perusal of the table contents will reveal that there's not a single woman to be found amidst Penman's various interviews, profiles, and critiques-make of that what you will.
Non-Brits will find many familiar people lurking in the contents, such as Harry Dean Stanton, Oliver Stone, DeNiro, Nicholson, Mailer, Tarantino, Zappa, Prince, and several Brits that may not be, such as Robin Cook, Martin Amis, Rik Mayall, Dennis Bowell and others. That's almost the collection's fatal flaw in a sense, when Penman does a few pages on someone we know well, he rarely provides a new insight or take (with some notable exceptions, cf. H.D. Stanton, Tarantino), and often the info is dated. When he discusses something/one unfamiliar, as in several pieces on British TV, it's totally meaningless to the uninitiated.
On the plus side, every piece exhibits Penman's dexterous wordplay, and most show him to be clever as the dickens. And, as with many critics, when he is tearing someone down, he's awfully entertaining to read. (cf. Mailer, Tarantino). There are some standout pieces, his 1990 essay on Heavy Metal offers an interesting perspective on the genre, and his piece on Tricky manages to capture the essence of the music (unlike, say, his overwrought piece on Augustus Pablo), and his appreciation of Jim Thompson is nice capsulation of his appeal.
So, there's some good stuff here, but few readers are going to love every morsel, or, I daresay, even half.
more good than bad.......2001-08-30
I'd honestly never heard of him until I snatched this book from a remainder bin, but Ian Penman appears to be something of a cult writer in England. He had the good fortune to begin his career in 1977, when punk rock was revitalizing the music scene, and was hired by New Music Express (NME), the best of the British music periodicals. Today he's mainly writing reviews for The Guardian, still some music but also books and stuff.
This collection of material is fairly wide-ranging, though, oddly enough, the rock music writing is the least interesting in the book. Penman's style is fairly slangy and staccato, so some of it is tough sledding for an American reader. Plus, some of his concerns, has been bands, British TV, sex, drugs, alcohol, are a tad parochial. I guess his trademark is the clever use of parentheses to express double meanings--(c)harmless; in(ter)dependence; etc.--which can be amusing but is always distracting. What redeems the book are some very good essays on such varied topics as The Rockford Files, Steve Martin, Harry Dean Stanton, Clint Eastwood and Jim Thompson, all of them positive, and then some real bloodlettings performed on Quentin Tarantino, Jack Nicholson, Frank Zappa, and a few others. I disagree with only the Tarantino assessment, but even it is done with such gusto that it's at least enjoyable. On balance, there's more good than bad here and it was enough to get me to look for his byline in the future.
GRADE : C+
Customer Reviews:
Belongs on the reading list of every businesswoman in America.......2005-12-30
Based on interviews with thousands of men and women, this book explores attitudes and behaviors of women that cause men to get resentful or angry. Women therefore find themselves needlessly impeded in their daily lives.
If women want to be taken seriously at work, then how is the wearing of sexy and revealing clothing to work going to help? Most men are scared of a sexual harassment lawsuit, so women need to find a way to tell male co-workers that they will not be offended by compliments on a new suit or hairstyle. Talking too much can be deadly to one's chances for promotion. Before making an oral presentation in front of others, have a critical friend spot-check you. Be organized, don't waste time and stick to the point. Be more goal-oriented in the language that you use.
When dealing with office politics, create and maintain allies, and remember that friendship and friendliness are two very different things. If you are the victim of office sabotage, the most important thing to do is confront the saboteur. Otherwise, you are giving them a green light to continue. Do not confuse confidence with inflexibility or stubbornness; you do not have to win every time. Resist the temptation to cover your office wall with college diplomas, plaques and certificates. Have a male friend grade your handshake from "too limp" to "bonecrusher."
This is an excellent book. It doesn't ask to women to change who they are, but to realize that there are things women do every day that drive men nuts (not in a good way). Changing those behaviors will help women to prosper in their personal and professional lives. This book belongs on the reading list of every businesswoman in America.

Expected much more.......2001-06-29
I expected much more from a book with "Audubon Birds" in the title. The designs are simple and the poses of the birds seem unnatural. I would not recommended this book to an experienced cross-stitcher. It might perhaps be of use to a novice cross-stitcher.
really nice bird patters.......2000-11-01
I received this as a gift and loved it.There were plenty of designs to get started on but it was hard to figure out which one to do first.I suggest this book Highly for anyone who likes Birds and who needs a great book.

EXCITING!.......2000-03-26
My mom loves cross-stitching and she has this one. I've borrowed this book from my mom last summer, and I already completed 5 designs from this book! The designs range from simple ones to a-little- bit-complex ones. It's really exciting to do it yourself!

Customer Reviews:
Will help you pass, but it won't be easy...........2007-01-14
Don't kid yourself. The 1Z0-031 is not an easy test, but reading this book helped me pass the test. If you are new to the profession, like me, then this book alone will not be enough.
I read this book once, understood MOST of what I read and then tried the test and failed. I then took an Oracle DBA class at a Community College and read two other books titled "Oracle 8i DBA Bible" and "Oracle 9i DBA Handbook". I also read Biju Thomas' book one more time, fully understood it and then I was able to pass the test.
I highly recommend this book. I feel that if you can read and understand 99-100% of what Biju Thomas writes in "OCA/OCP: Oracle 9i DBA Fundamentals I" then you can pass the Oracle Exam. I also would not attempt the Exam without reading this book at least once.
Good for certification and great for on the job Reference!.......2005-10-09
My objective in going to the exam was to learn the basics of database and passing the exam was secondary ( i have a fairly well settled job where certification does not matter much).Anyway, No review on certification books is complete without giving a background of your experiences on the subject :
MY DBA EXPERIENCE :
My experiences on Oracle DBA fundamentals is practically and theoretically zero. I have already passed the Introduction to Oracle9i SQL exam which is a pre-requisite to get certified. You can be a master in SQL skills and still be a novice in DBA Fundamentals. Frankly I DID NOT know the following :
1. Physical structure of database is composed of controlfiles, datafiles and log files
2. Never knew that most developers and DBA's spend the time on logical structures which are tables, tablespace etc and do not physically exist in the database
3. Had never heard of V$views
4. I was aware of tables, tablespaces ,DDL commands etc
5. I am an application developer and bulk of my interaction with oracle was select statements, update statements etc
6. Was aware of different types of indexes and that is an important topic in both SQL fundamentals exam and DBA fundamentals exam
If you can answer to all of the above criteria's with a confident 'yes', you are most likely a DBA already and just want to get urself a pay raise by getting certified..Yes, this book will help to breeze thro ( i read about someone who got the exam passed by studying the book for 40 hours). For newbies like me, it is not that easy..in fact it is doubly difficult over intro to sql exams because, i lacked the practical experience ( try inactivaing a tablespace from your company database).
STUDY EFFORT : This book goes through every topic in detail, but sorely misses the visual explanation that would have made some topics easy ( example ...shutting down an instance and startup). This is the reason why i am not giving 5 stars to the book. Neverthless every topic was well described. some of the topics are little elaborate eating into our valuable study time. I studied the book totally 4 times , since after every reading ,tried doing the question paper and slowly removed the errors in understanding. It took a whopping 6 months for me ( and my friend) to learn as you earn. With little more effort, probably i could have got certified in 4 months
I used the book tests and Best of all, my friend who also passed the exams sent me a question paper ( that be purchased in ebay) based on Jason Couchman's book Took that exam( about 150 questions)..and everytime went back to the book reading the chapters and sections where i got it wrong . As a matter of fact, the question paper from jason was very very closely aligned with the questions i got in the exam.
EXAM : Passed the exam .scored 49 correct ( required 44). there was not one question on syntaxes . i assume the oracle examiners have decided it is too easy to find syntaxes on the internet and were focusing on understanding of the subject ( ex : steps taken to multiplex a control file)
If passing the exam is primary for u..don't miss the simulation exams of Jason Couchman ( of course u need to study )..but if u want to learn every aspect of DBA Fundamentals, use this book. On the job, this book is a great resource ( according to a junior DBA in our team). Well written book!
Very good test preperation.......2004-09-06
To pass those Oracle Exams is hard for a newbie anyways because the hand on experience is missing. I am one of these candidates but I have to say that this book is very helpful to get ready for the test. 95% of the topics needed for the exam are completely in this book and explained in a good understandable way. For the other 5% I have used the original Oracle training documents. After you have passed the exam this book is an awesome reference because topics are divided in a very usefully way and all topics have examples of the SQL commands and dictionary views.
Good Reference.......2004-08-18
I used this book and ILT Oracle's manual for my preparation.
Most of the objectives are covered in the book, I like the way in which information is being presented, the only problem I found is some chapters miss important information such as names of dictionary views, which are clever to exam.
NLS is barely covered and not all views are shown.
The tables chapter enforced too much about types of segments, I spent too much time looking into creating partioned tables which is not part of exam objectives.
The Undo chapter misses information on how to check for PENDING DELETE rollback segments.
Follow Exam Objectives when using this book, so you won't waste time memorizing stuff you don't need.
Good Luck
Very useful. Passed first time........2004-08-05
I purchased this book and downloaded Oracle 9i from the Oracle web site. I spent less than 40 hours reading the book, doing the practice questions and playing around with Oracle and I passed the exam with a 47/60. It's not the greatest of passing margins but considering I haven't had any prior experience or training with Oracle (I have had one year of experience with MS SQL Server 2000) and it took less than 40 hours of my time to prepare for it, I would say the book did its job well.

Bernard Bailyn, A First Rate Historian.......2000-01-24
Bernard Bailyn, brilliant historian, answers a series of questions at Dartmouth College while in residence there on the subject of writing and teaching history. To the average reader, this guide will be not be hard to read, but probably not very necessary unless there is an intent to teach undergraduate or graduate students in a small class setting or if research is in process to complete a larger work on history. The book contains practical knowledge for all history teachers and offers some very general assumtions that must be kept in mind whether teaching or reporting on history. Well written and constructed, but intended for the serious historian.
One of the wisest books on writing history ever written........1999-04-24
Someone had the inspired idea of having one of the greatest living historians take part in an interview on his craft and profession. The result, ably edited and presented by Edward Connery Latham, is one of the wisest and most accessible books ever written about writing history. Bailyn's work spans the range of historical scholarship, and he is perhaps the most influential historian of the second half of the twentieth century; the list of his graduate students that appeared in the 1991 collection of essays published in his honor is in turn an honor role of the nation's most creative, able, and productive historians.
I would recommend this book enthusiastically to anyone who is considering entering the historical profession or anyone who simply wants to understand what it is that historians do. The questions, by Professors Jere R. Danielle and Charles T. Wood of Dartmouth, are incisive and provocative, and Bailyn's answers are uniformly enlightening and engaging. Everyone having a role in the creation of this wonderful book is to be congratulated.

Book Description
Explore: Stories of Survival from Off the Map offers first-hand accounts by the world's boldest explorers, who have encountered storms, starvation, canibals, predators, and disease in their pursuit of mystery and adventure. Nunez Cabeza de Vaca writes of his 16th century expedition to the region north of the Gulf of Mexico, an amazing tale of survival and hardship that begins with the loss of de Vaca's ships and the capture and enslavement of his party by Indians. Argentinian novelist Abel Posse gives us an unforgettable Christopher Columbus facing down mutiny and the threat of starvation Tim Flannery almost dies while searching for Fulmer's Fruit Bat, thought to have become extinct 12,000 years ago. Thor Heyderdahl recounts his earliest adventure in Polynesia. Premier mountaineering and adventure writer David Roberts searches for a legendary lost city high in the cliffs of New Mexico. Following an ancient trail, Roberts discovers a beautifully preserved Anasazi city — and a curse. Explore also includes writing by Lawrence Millman, Gene Savay, John Long, Redmond O'Hanlon, Fanny Bullock Workman and William Hunter Workman, Andrea Barrett, and W.H. Murray.
Customer Reviews:
A strong addition to a terrific series.......2000-10-07
EXPLORE adds 18 well-selected tales of adventure to the Adrenaline series. They blend of humor, like Tim Cahill's Peruvian expedition with two eccentric companions; dangerous adventure, including A.N. de Vaca's exploration of America in the early 1500's; and more scholarly accounts, such as David Roberts' search for lost cliff dwellings in New Mexico. The best feature of this book, and the series as a whole, is that it exposes us to writings that we would otherwise never see. Ms Schwamm has cast her net widely and hauled in four centuries of engaging exploration stories. Some are excerpted from works out of print, but the bibliography makes it possible to track these books down if you must hear the rest of the story. So why only four stars? As a collector of the entire series, I find this volume less spine-tingling than the rest, with fewer stories of death-defying danger, which is okay - not all exploration involves a struggle to survive if you go about it properly. If you like National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, this is a book for you.

Book Description
Jonathan Singer's witty, erudite book is a celebration of rationality and an urgent call to make use of intelligence and reason to better cope with human problems. Emphasizing the importance of rationality's greatest achievement, modern science, Singer--one of the foremost biologists of our era--argues that for the first time in several million years humanity has at its disposal the tools for an objective understanding of the external world. Singer demonstrates that, today more than ever, the fullest exercise of rationality is essential if humanity is to rein in a runaway technology and control an explosion of the human population that together threaten to devastate life on this planet within only a few more generations.
The intrusion of reason and rationality into our largely irrational world has been painfully slow, uneven, and often unwelcome. Singer explains that for rationalists the founding of modern science--which took place only a few hundred years ago--has overthrown many of the myths of conventional wisdom and dogmas of traditional religions. Yet these beliefs still hold sway over the irrational world, obstructing efforts to deal sensibly with the problematic future of mankind.
The core of The Splendid Feast of Reason is an engaging and accessible account of the knowledge that modern science provides. Singer offers an absorbing discussion of how life works, of the nature of reproduction, aging, and death, and of the necessary fragility of the individual life compared to the resilience of life itself. He emphasizes the primary role of the genes in determining the structural organization and the behaviors of living things, including humans. He also stresses the nature and mechanisms of biological evolution, mechanisms that have now been placed in jeopardy because of human ignorance and irrational appetites. Finally, Singer delves into the enigma of the real world with its irrational and chaotic operations and offers suggestions of how a rationalist can not only survive, but thrive in it.
Customer Reviews:
A Splendid Book!.......2006-04-14
It is hard to believe that this is Dr. Singer's first book, based on how well-written it is. I hope he is working on a second. I simply can't believe how many great ideas are packed into this one short work. I ended up underlining every 5th line or so. Simply put, this book is for everyone who recognizes the mass irrationality of humanity. It will be comforting to find another rational mind who speaks so directly in praising science and reason, and pointing out the folly of the more visible and "popular" aspects of society. I fear this book will be little read because it is too brilliant and filled with more wisdom than most people will be able to connect with. Let's face it, truely intelligent and wise people can't attract much of an audience in our modern world. Should you be one who longs to read some important and well-crafted lines on the state of humanity; where we went wrong and where we got it right, you couldn't do better than to pick up this gem--one of the best books I've read in a long time.
Amazing, mind opening read.......2002-04-17
This book was recommend by Discover magazine as a best science book of 2001. It covers the evolution of reason and its application in science. Truely a life altering book. It will make you look at the world in a new, simplified way.
