Gut-Busting Comedy.......2000-08-02
This installment of Peter Bagge's great comic "Hate!" finds Buddy Bradley living at home in New Jersey following the death of his father. The title refers to the matriarchy Buddy finds himself living under: his dysfuntional single-mom sister, his own grief-stricken mother, and his insane girlfriend Lisa. Nervy comedy based on edgy battle-of-the-sexes obsevations will have you howling with laughter and feeling anxious at the same time. One critic said "Hate!" is like "Stranger Than Paradise" meets the Three Stooges: I would say Cameron Crowe crossed with the Farrelly brothers. Must-read literature for understanding the '90's.

When Mom has "that look"-and we all know the look-"uh-oh" is an understatement! You can run from your genes, but you can't hide! One of two new spring books that take a hilarious and irreverent look at the different branches of the family tree, this title focuses on Mom. Backbone of the household, barometer of the family climate, wielder of supreme power, able to stop chaos in its tracks with the raise of an eyebrow-Mom's ways are mysterious, inscrutable, and often very, very funny. This quirky but adoring tribute to Mom is illustrated with retro art and nostalgic photos. Sure to be appreciated by anyone who's baffled and awed by Mom, it's also a unique and memorable gift for Mother's Day.

Superb images, shows the beauty in body art.......1999-06-03
I thought the artwork was superb and presented some memorable images of tattoo'd people. Interesting to see how the individuals who enjoy bady art come from all walks of life. Although I would never have a tatto myself I found them more easy to understand when presented as art than defiance.

Book Description
PL/SQL is the procedural programming language of choice in the Oracle database. It is completely integrated with SQL and is the most fully optimized, highest performance language for database transaction processing.
This book is about cool, effective techniques to solve essential problems using PL/SQL. It does not attempt to teach the language - there are plenty on the market that do that - instead it focuses in on the fundamental programming unit, the stored procedure, and demonstrates how to code them in the most effective manner and on real practical uses for them in the database.
In short: if you have mastered the fundamentals of the PL/SQL language, and are now looking for an in-depth, practical guide to solving real problems with PL/SQL stored procedures, then this is the book for you. It will demonstrate how to:
- Design efficient, high performance PL/SQL code
- Implement effective data handling mechanisms
- Streamline your database administration
- Work with Triggers
- Secure your data
- Build effective web applications that run from the database
- Exploit the versatile functionality of Java right in the database
- Debug and optimize PL/SQL
This book is targeted primarily at the Oracle DBA or developer charged with the implementation of effective data handling and database administration mechanisms, but will also have great appeal to any developer whose applications rely on an Oracle database and who needs a sound understanding of how to use PL/SQL in order to distribute their application code effectively.

NEW from the OakTable Press Series from Apress! If you need more from a PL/SQL book than just the correct keywords and some pretty syntax diagrams, then this is the book for you. Have you been searching in vain for real-world examples and genuine strategies for maximizing the benefits of PL/SQL within your organization, you'll find them in Mastering Oracle PL/SQL: Practical Solutions, the inaugural title of the pioneering OakTable Press series from Apress.
Mastering Oracle PL/SQL: Practical Solutions isn't a tutorial on how to code PL/SQL. It's designed to show you how to code PL/SQL well. It will show you how to write code that will run quickly and won't break in high load, multi-user environments. It covers the vast array of the functionality that PL/SQL provides, including effective handling of relational and abstract data, security, triggers, dynamic web content presentation from within the database, creation of a DBA toolkit, and effective debugging techniques.
This book sets out to redress the unjust criticism leveled at PL/SQL in years gone by. It gives you the tools and techniques to ensure that, whatever your needs are, the PL/SQL you build will run as efficiently as possible. I am confident the practical solutions provided in this book will help you to realize the true power and functionality PL/SQL can offer your projects.
Mastering Oracle PL/SQL: Practical Solutions is targeted primarily toward the DBA or developer charged with the implementation of effective data handling, security, and database administration mechanisms in the Oracle database. However, it will also have great appeal to any developer whose applications rely on an Oracle database and who needs a sound understanding of how to use PL/SQL effectively,
If you're brand new to PL/SQL, then you'll want to take some time to get familiar with the language before tackling this book. It's not for the total beginner. But once you're up and running, we believe you'll find our book an invaluable guide for ensuring that the PL/SQL solutions you build are robust, perform well, and are easy to maintain.
Customer Reviews:
This is a real good book to master PL/SQL.......2005-10-23
The book is good but many solutions are not tested fully so its not that they can be cut and pasted directly out of the book. you may have to troubleshoot many of them. Otherwise a real good book.
One for the must have collection !.......2005-09-30
As a Developer working predominantly with Oracle Databases for over five years, I'm always looking for books to help me produce better code. I have to say this is one of them. The author has produced a book that explains concepts in a practical manner that is also easy to read. I began reading this book just before starting a major development project and the code insights and examples assisted me greatly in this project.
Probably more a information and guidence book rather than a reference book. I found I read it from cover to cover and used the information as a platform for future developing. Some great code examples which I have used to great effect though!
By far, one of the best book on practical Pl/sql.......2005-09-06
With 15 years experience in Oracle as DBA and developer, I wrote a lot of packages and found in this book true advices and practical solutions, wich sound good to me. The best feature is that you can experiment all the code found in it and see by yourself the advantage of using the way proposed by McDonald. I like these books where autors breaks some common ideas ans show by "A + B" that the right solution is not the most common. A real useful book written by a true professional.
A good book, worth its price.......2005-03-09
The book takes a bottom-up approach: the first part shows useful coding and optimizing techniques, while the second one gives real world applications and tips on program design.
I have two minor complaints, however:
Most chapters assume at least a good knowledge of PL/SQL and build on that, which I think is fair for a book titled "Mastering ...". On the other hand, two of the chapters (Triggers especially, and PL/SQL Debugging to a degree) take a different approach and start from the beginning, explaining the basics, too. It may be just me, but I think those pages are wasted.
Furthermore, there is a certain amount of overlap with Tom Kyte's Expert One-on-One Oracle, also from Apress.
A disorganized but essential practitioners guide to PL/SQL.......2004-10-21
I've had this book for a couple of months now. I've been waiting to finish it before writing a review, but it doesn't look like I'll be finished with it any time soon mostly because I'm using it as a reference book instead of reading it from front to back.
Clearly the book wasn't written as a reference book. Just look up almost any topic in the index and you'll find a number of entries scattered all over the place. Pipe-lined functions, for example, are written about in 4 (four) separate chapters! But the index is good and the material isn't redundant. The reason for this strange structure, I think, is as follows:
The book is divided into two equal length sections. The first half deals in general with PL/SQL strategies and techniques: how to check your code for efficiency, why code should be in packages, how to use cursors, cursor variables, cursor expressions, anchored data types and collections. The second half of the book re-visits most of the same topics in an application centric way (often using PL/SQL supplied packages). It's natural that some of the same techniques and strategies will be re-used and there will be some overlap in the application-oriented chapters.
Sometimes though, the repetition is weird: both the trigger chapter and the security chapter describe a logon trigger that's designed to prevent an ODBC user from accessing the database. The security chapter discusses the data base object grants that are necessary for the trigger to work while the trigger chapter omits all this. The trigger chapter discusses the security risk with the trigger, how a user can often rename the desktop application and bypass the trigger's intent (and purpose) while the security chapter doesn't mention that problem at all.
The book's style (but not its (lack of) organization) is clearly influenced by Tom Kyte's writing, (one of the technical reviewers). Each proposition, especially in the first 1/2 of the book is backed up with a SQL proof/example/argument (based usually on the v$stat view). The style is taken to the max in the discussion of implicit vs. explicit cursors, (in chapter 3). There the discussion stretches over 10 pages and alternates between thesis anti-thesis proof and counter proof like a debate in a Tibetan monastery.
A nice thing is that there's often more than one solution to a problem. For example the code that monitors the Oracle alert file for error messages opens the alert file as an EXTERNAL TABLE, but then an alternate approach is described, which opens the alert file as a BFILE (an external LOB). This is coupled with an explanation about why you might want to go one way or the other, which is very illuminating (although in this specific case, I'm not sure why the author didn't simply open the alert file using utl_file supplied package.)
In my opinion, the chapter describing the PL/SQL Web Toolkit and related technologies is a treasure trove by itself and probably worth the price of the whole book. I don't believe this information is available in such an engaging lucid way anywhere else. It's the only chapter that I had read without stopping.
The book came out as Oracle10g was being released, which raises an important question - is this book already outdated or not? My feeling is that the book is just relevant for 10g PL/SQL developers as 9i developers. The reason I say this is that the PL/SQL language from the developer's point of view has not changed between 9i and 10g (See the paper on OTN 'What's New in PL/SQL in Oracle Database 10g?' which emphasizes that the main changes in PL/SQL 10g - compiler and execution environment - are transparent to the developer.) Maybe, for 10g, the book could have mentioned some of the new PL/SQL supplied packages, for example, dbms_scheduler in addition to dbms_job, or utl_mail instead of utl_smtp, htmldb in addition to the web toolkit, but obviously this has no impact on the book's main message.
What is the book's main message? Demonstrate that the PL/SQL code you write is performant and scalable (chapter 1). The rest of the book is a hodgepodge of technical PL/SQL advice and techniques that should have been organized like a dictionary or an encyclopedia. But nothing is perfect and you can still learn a lot from this eccentric PL/SQL text (even if you can't read it from cover to cover).

Book Description
Who is Mr. Dimock? An enchanting storyteller, an eccentric scholar, a wise man, a self-professed "Indophile." Exactly what does he explore? Everything: monkeys, karma, snake charmers, monsoons, curry, ancient sages, the Dharma-Shastras, cricket, even UFO's.
In an amusing and intriguing book, Edward Dimock takes us along on a spirited tour of India, starting in 1955, when he and his family first sailed to Bombay. From the bustling streets of Calcutta, where monkeys roam among thousands of people, to the tiny island of Diu, Dimock's brings him to the house of an elusive maharaja. A run-in with a water buffalo teaches him that things aren't always what they seem. The tale of an ascetic sage reveals the power of mediation. An ancient mythical figure by the name of Manu gives advice on how to live wisely.
Mr. Dimock Explores the Mysteries of the East traces Dimock's numerous trips across India and his explorations of its culture and customs. Whether he's haggling with gypsies or riding through town on an exotic land. Charming, playful, and full of insight, Mr. Dimock Explores the Mysteries of the East illuminates the wonders of India as well as the vibrant personality of its author.
Customer Reviews:
A Charming, Extremely Talented Writer...A Must Read.......2000-11-03
I am passionate for non-fiction books about India so this book was on my personal reading list. I will mention this: Something about Mr. Dimock's writing reminds me of that "lost" writing style of the 19th century. This is an absolutely fabulous book that unfortunately will probably be overlooked time and time again by readers. This is a book I will buy and always keep because it is so perfect in every way!
Review of Mr. Dimock Explores the Mysteries of the East.......2000-04-11
The great strength of this book lies in its brevity. Two-hundred pages divided by twenty chapters makes for fast reading, covering a wide variety of subjects. Edward Dimock is a man of the world; his depth of experience allows him to write with both fondness and irreverence. Early on he confesses himself to be an old fuddy-duddy, guided by the ancient Manu (like Dante and Vergil), yet is not above numerous and much-appreciated pop references to anything from Mel Brooks to Star Trek. For those of us who know choice little of India (let alone been there) Mysteries of the East is both didactic and hilarious. Dimock's a wonderful writer, quickly establishing a humorous tone while discussing otherwise weighty matters. The rhythm he works himself into had me anticipating his editorializing, even in the midst of the more luxurious description. He's always "on", always has a little something to say about his travels and discoveries, be they an American movie star in Agra or the island of Diu where Dimock "communes with the spirits" (my realization of what he meant by this caused me to laugh out loud; I was finally hooked). Dimock is a witty observer of detail, with a well-educated sense of comparison and contrast. The similarity between Santa Claus and Ganesha is nicely drawn, while the author is careful to distinguish between Sir Richard Burton and just plain Richard Burton. The Indians and Sahibs are allowed to speak for themselves either charmingly or boisterously, quick character sketches that add flavor to the cultural mix. Dimock also knows his Vishvamitra and Herodotus and lets these old-timers have their say. But as he himself writes, "It is no news to anybody that language is more than words", and some very fine study is put into his silent characters as well, everyone from Yusuf the waiter to Nikki the German shepherd. Dimock takes an obvious delight in the menagerie that is India, from thieving monkeys to a charging water buffalo, and a most striking non-speaking role is played by Gopal the elephant, whose astuteness and venerability Dimock compares favorably to his own father. He's correct in describing the glance of the polite pachyderm as sagacious: some animals--say, cows,--look right through you, but elephants look right at you . . . appraisingly. The change of scene in Part III of the book caught me somewhat off-guard as Dimock leaves India and travels to Aden and then back to New England. I thought the whole book was supposed to be about India, but I got to thinking about the title; the East. After all, Aden is in the Middle East, and Massachusetts is on the east coast, and both are plenty mysterious to me as well. The most memorable advice Dimock provides if one is to truly see India is that one must: 1. Meet a maharaja, whether he be sober or inebriated, 2. Ride an elephant to see an outdoor drama without trampling any of the locals, 3. See a ruby-eyed idol deep in a rain-forest straight out of The Jungle Book, 4.Take in a live performance by a cobra and its handler in the street, or at least stumble upon one of the great snakes out in the bush, or (Shiva willing) in one's own bathtub.
Hilarious.......1999-07-19
Mr. Dimock possesses a perspective on India that, few if any, Westerners will ever have. He is probably the only Western author who has been able to notice and accept the chaos of India. Mr. Dimock aslo has the unique insight of perceiving the order that arises from this choas. In his book he presents India to us as a place of constant comedy the humor of which is best understood by someone who is fimilar with the region and it's people. India comes across as a place of extremes where even the animals have a personality and express it in their own right. The book was funny and nostalgic at the same time. The ideas would have been best expressed in an Indian language but the limiations of English as a language used to recount India is also very amusing. The book is very highly recommended especially to those who live in mortal fear and awe of the place. Thanks! B

Read this in College. Found it to be the best complete review of American Indian policy from colonial times to present.

David Bodanis, author of The Secret House and The Secret Garden, applies his wit and curiosity to another invisible realm: the insides of our bodies. Bodanis wraps his thought-provoking investigation of the natural world in the story of a family's typical day. We follow the baby's explorations of the house, go out with the family to the mall, and experience the daughter's first kiss. Of course, your mind still might be reeling from breakfast and the orange juice--"a liquid which contains embalming fluid, varnish solvent, vinegar, and nail polish remover ... and a certain amount of real orange juice, too."
All that microscopic reality--the benign bacteria feasting on our faces, the widening of the pupils as Baby's gaze meets Mom's or Dad's ("the tiny muscles controlling the pupils in the dad's eyes suddenly tug wider. Males who don't have children rarely show this universal sign of interest.")--triggers a host of facts, both fascinating and appalling; that aforementioned parental gaze segues into an explanation of the ingredients of baby food ("boiled and skimmed pigs' feet extract is often used, though in a pinch the scooped inner pith of discarded fruit can be added, too. Chalk is often added next"). And that's the least of it...
Bodanis's scrutiny is fortified with more than two dozen color photographs from the Science Photo Library that show the world we live in but, thankfully, never see. It's amusing, disturbing, and cheerful in the face of "Ugh!" and "Ah!"--the perfect book to trigger lively conversations. One thing's for certain: you'll never again complain that your ordinary day is just too ordinary.
Book Description
An extraordinary look at the ordinary world
Ever wonder what makes the icing on your danish so white? (Hint: the same thing that makes the paint on your walls so white.) Pondering the mysterious force of romantic attraction? (Often, we are drawn to those similar to us in looks, opinions, and even number of siblings.) Do you sometimes feel as if your home is too crowded? (You will be shocked at the number of microscopic houseguests who share our dwellings.)
Following a typical family on a typical weekend day, The Secret Family examines what is happening inside family members as they eat, talk, get dressed, walk, and drive to the local mall -- as well as how they interact with the dust mites, bacteria, tapeworms and innumerous other microbes with whom they share their lives. Full of brilliant, state-of-the-art photography, astonishing facts, and real-life science, this book exposes the worlds and histories behind our everyday routines and surroundings. David Bodanis is our lively tour guide on this adventure and ensures that the familiar will never look quite the same again.

Incredible journey into things we don't see.......2003-02-01
This is one of those books, which is highly informative, entertaining and has "repeat" value. I read this book twice in succession and even though i rented it from the library, i feel so compelled by the information in it that i am purchasing a copy for my bookshelf . I know, i will refer to it often to reaffirm to myself ,nothing is ordinary as it seems.
For eg: Postage stamps, those tiny square pieces which we lick , stick and forget. I quote how this book unravels it " Postage stamps are an intricate layered sandiwch of chemicals. The glue is a true masterpiece of the chemist's art. Think of a problem. Not only does the glue have to be sticky enough to hold onto a envelope, but it has not to be so sticky that it grabs permanently on your tongue. It has to do this with onlythe amount of salive we're happy to dribble off and then it has to stick to the envelope firmly, but still you give you a moment or two to readjust its position. Finally, even once the chemists have worked out something that's tongue attractive and humidity resistant and briefly free-sliding, they still have have to throw it out if it tastes bad. Or offends anybody's religion. Ir is too expensive. Or is too high in calories."
This is just a sample. The books jumps and hops in a free wheeling away across many varied aspects of our lives, commenting and shedding light on them. For eg, Chicken breast is found white in the fast food centers, stuffed in salads or other food menu. WHy? Normally food tends to be green or reddish or brown, but very rarely white. This is because of the sedentary lifestyle of the modern-day chicken. The flight muscles in the breast don't get used much, so there's no reason for oxygen sotring red blood cells to be soaked darkly through them. AS a result, the breast comes out white.
One thing you will definitely remember after reading this book is that you are never alone. Tuck yourself in the cleanest of bedsheets? Even then, there will be around 40000 pillow mites (ghastly miniature Rhino look alikes) crawling over the pillow.
Right now, on our faces are armies of demodex mites. Harmless creatures feasting on our skin, unvisible to us.
The pictures in the book are incredible. Read and enjoy!
cheers!
A very interesting read..........2001-07-13
I cannot elaborate much further than the other reviews already have. Simply stated, this book makes you think about everyday things in a different way. I am glad I purchased and read it. Yes, the photographs are amazing.
Fabulously frightening.......1998-04-05
This book provides a fascinating look into what goes on in our homes daily. The descriptions of what we eat, where we sleep, and how our bodies protect us from (too much) harm are incredible. Bodanis has researched nearly every aspect of family life, and explains to us what it all means. My only complaint about this book is that it doesn't have enough photographs. Those that it does have are splendid, however.
mind blowing!.......1997-12-30
It's not often you read a book that opens your mind to entire new worlds. Reading this made me feel like an explorer who has just discovered a world hidden in plain sight. Every page made me think "WOW"! This is a mind-expanding book.
Funny, entertaining, informative - a great read - buy it.......1997-09-28
The Secret Family by David Bodanis is a popular science book with a difference - it is funny and entertaining, as well as being informative. He has a talent for exposing hidden worlds in the most mundane of everyday activities: the food we eat, our shopping routines, family relationships and the way our bodies work. Plus he has the most amazing colour photographs of soap bubbles, scouring pads, eggshells, sweat droplets, CDs, and salt etc, magnified so much that they expose a different and beautiful world.
He takes an ordinary family - parents, teenage daughter, ten year old son, baby and a dog - and traces them through a lazy Saturday breakfast and visit to the mall. After reading this you will never look at your supermarket orange juice or danish pastry with quite the same relish. You will eye your friends and family suspiciously as they carry huge populations of microscpic mites (demodex) on their eyelashes regardless of how clean they are and when two people kiss, the mites intermingle and new populations are born! Bodanis scatters his narrative with interesting curiosities - how the yellow sticky notes were invented, the origins of the doberman, the arbitrary address system for mail in parts of Japan, and how supermarkets use synthetic smells, colour and music to get us to walk slowly, buy more, and eat faster.
I'm a fan of Bodanis, and recommend his earlier books too (The Secret House and The Secret Garden). So if you want to give yourself a treat, read this book, and then buy one for a friend.
