    1 out of 5 stars Ugh...........2007-02-08

Because his X-Force mini-series relaunch wasn't enough macho mutant mayhem, Rob Liefeld returns once again with this X-Force mini. Taking place right after the events of X-Force: The Legend Returns, X-Force: Shatterstar focuses on, well, Shatterstar. Cable is dead (yeah, sure he is) and Shatterstar is up against mutant assassins and...well, something to that effect. You see, the overall storyline is kind of hard to follow, and saying that story has never been one of Liefeld's strong suits is, well, saying it lightly. And of course, we can't forget his "artwork" now can we? That's right, the inperportioned character models, ungodly muscled and incredibly busty. Yeah, it's like 1992 all over again. Chances are if you pick this up then you know what you're getting. The better question would be, why are you even bothering. Unless you have some kind of die hard thing for an early 90's nostalgia trip, avoid this like the plague.

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny Book!.......2006-03-03

I just finished reading this book and I thought it was very funny and a great tribute to the authors sister. I myself have gone through the process of a kidney transplant from a living donor so this all hits home for me. I can relate to the blood tests, the scheduling of appointments, the hospital (food especially) and the doctors. My experience on the whole was pretty good and not nearly as trying as this one was but it was very entertaing and moving to read about love within the family and how the family has to stick together in bad and good times.
It takes a special person to donate an organ to a loved one--my mother donated a kidney to me in 1995.

        Book Description

Have the Canadian media given feminism a bad name or have they been among the movement's strongest supporters?

Is journalistic objectivity a myth when it comes to women's voices, or doesn't it matter?

In this provocative new book — the first one to examine print and broadcast news coverage of women's issues in English Canada — Barbara Freeman explores what the media were saying about women and their concerns during an important period in our history — and why.

The Satellite Sex is both a social history and a media case study of the years 1966-1971, when the feminist movement began once more to gather support. Women wanted equal treatment under the law, and they wanted rights they had not gained when they won the vote many years earlier. In response, the Canadian government appointed a federal inquiry on the status of women, and hundreds of women came forward to talk to the Commission about the injustices they experienced at school, at work, in public life, in their homes, and even in their bedrooms.

The Satellite Sex demonstrates that the print and broadcast media coverage of women's issues at that time were much more complex and fragmented than revealed by research in the United States on the same era. This book, released thirty years after the Canadian Commission presented its report, also raises questions about the lack of strong feminist voices in today's news media.

5 out of 5 stars Great close-ups of the marbles!.......2000-10-19

There are several things that make this book a stand-out. The first is the basic information about the types of marbles (antique, machine-made, modern) and the makers of the marbles. If you're looking for extensive historical information, this may not be the book for you. But if you collect marbles and are interested in good, basic information as well as tons of photos (most enlarged so you can see every detail) of a wide variety of marbles, this book fills the bill. While I'm no marble expert, I learned a grat deal from reading this one!

Without Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), network administrators might have to actually get out of their chairs and go see what's up with all of the network-connected equipment under their authority. Perish the thought. Essential SNMP explains how the management protocol works and how it's implemented by several operating systems and pieces of equipment. More importantly, this book shows its reader--who should be a network administrator who's familiar with the problems of running a distributed network--how SNMP can earn its place as a network administration tool. In other words, this book examines SNMP as a strategic resource as well as a technical phenomenon.

Because it's oriented toward SNMP as a tool, much of the coverage in this book has to do with software that uses SNMP to provide network monitoring and control services. After a strengths-and-weaknesses overview of a number of SNMP packages, the authors use mainly HP OpenView, Castle Rock SNMPc, and Net-SNMP (the last in combination with Perl scripting) to demonstrate how SNMP works and how to take advantage of it. It's the scripting that really distinguishes this book from other SNMP books, by the way. It's integral to the authors' presentation, and the latter half of this book is packed with shell and Perl listings. --David Wall

Topics covered: Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and its applicability as a network management tool. Details like object identifiers (OIDs), management information bases (MIBs), traps, and community strings are defined and explained. The configuration of SNMP agents is detailed for several software packages and operating systems, and the integration of SNMP and scripts (in shell languages and in Perl) is covered nicely.

        Book Description

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) provides a "simple" set of operations that allows you to more easily monitor and manage network devices like routers, switches, servers, printers, and more. The information you can monitor with SNMP is wide-ranging--from standard items, like the amount of traffic flowing into an interface, to far more esoteric items, like the air temperature inside a router. In spite of its name, though, SNMP is not especially simple to learn.

O'Reilly has answered the call for help with a practical introduction that shows how to install, configure, and manage SNMP. Written for network and system administrators, the book introduces the basics of SNMP and then offers a technical background on how to use it effectively. Essential SNMP explores both commercial and open source packages, and elements like OIDs, MIBs, community strings, and traps are covered in depth. The book contains five new chapters and various updates throughout. Other new topics include:

The bulk of the book is devoted to discussing, with real examples, how to use SNMP for system and network administration tasks. Administrators will come away with ideas for writing scripts to help them manage their networks, create managed objects, and extend the operation of SNMP agents.

Once demystified, SNMP is much more accessible. If you're looking for a way to more easily manage your network, look no further than Essential SNMP, 2nd Edition.

        Customer Reviews:

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-25

Most of the books in this series are very technical and go into serious details. This one reads like a compendium of owner's manuals. A really good book on SNMP is needed and this one is not it.

        3 out of 5 stars 1/4 good.......2007-05-03

This book is good up till you get 1/4 of the way through it. The first quarter of the book is good and it goes over general SNMP stuff then history different versions etc. The last 3/4 of this book cover configuring proprietary monitoring systems like open view and solar winds.

I dont care about open view.. or solar winds.. i wanted to learn about snmp... not some vendors software package. Im suprised that this got published with such a general title.. when really the book is an snmp intro, followed by how to setup a proprietary monitoring tool.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on SNMP starts from the beginning.......2007-02-21

I hadn't seen a new book on SNMP come out in some time, and the older ones I had read were so abstract and unhelpful that I was reluctant to try another one. This book, though not perfect, is much better than the older books I have looked at on the subject. For one thing, it just didn't dive into the subject with a bunch of confusing graphs and object trees assuming I already knew the big picture.

Chapter one is just a general introduction to SNMP and network management. Chapter 2 goes into details on both SNMPv1 and SNMPv2. It talks about how SNMP sends and receives information, how to read MIB files, and about SNMP communities. It looks in detail at three MIB's - MIB-II, Host Resources, and RMON. MIB-II is a very important management group because every device that supports SNMP must also support MIB-II, thus objects from MIB-II are used in examples through the whole book. Chapter 3 introduces SNMPv3, which addresses the security problems present in v1 and v2.

Next the book introduces the idea of a network management architecture. It stresses that you need a plan that helps you use Network Management Stations (NMS's) effectively in order to effectively manage your network. This section includes how to properly choose your hardware and what questions you need to ask yourself. Next the book discusses actually installing and running your software. Specifically HP's OpenView Network Node Manager and Castle Rock's SNMPc Enterprise Edition are discussed. Included are detailed instructions along with screenshots of the application. Next there are instructions on how to configure SNMP agents. You are walked through some standard configuration parameters plus some advanced parameters that sometimes crop up. Once again there are plenty of screen shots to help you know you are on the right path.

Now that you've been walked through the configuration of your system and the installation of software, the book shows you how to use the three basic SNMP operations of snmpget, snmpset, and snmpwalk. A group of Perl scripts are shown that set, get, and walk objects. Next HP OpenView and Net-SNMP are used to perform the same operations from the command line. A third alternative is demonstrated that uses OpenView's graphical MIB Browser. Next is a discussion of how to set up SNMP to poll your devices at certain intervals and to set thresholds that require action if crossed. Again Perl scripts enter the discussion for configuring this set-up. SNMPc and OpenView screen shots show you how to configure this using graphical interfaces, and what to expect. Next the book discusses traps, which are how an agent sends a monitoring station asynchronous notification about certain key conditions that may require action. The book demonstrates how to handle traps using OpenView and Perl scripts. Next the book shows how to read, configure, and even define your own traps.

The book now turns to the problem of agents that need to be extended in their abilities. The book discusses the answer to this problem - extensible SNMP agents - and three of them in particular - the OpenView, Net-SNMP, and SystemEdge agents. Next are some interesting scripts for automating common system administration tasks. Issues covered by these little scripts include determining who is logging into your machine, a port monitor, service monitoring, and switching port control, among others. There is then a discussion on MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher), a trend analysis tool that generates image files and whose output is viewable from a web browser. Complete instructions on installing and using the tool are given. The next tool discussed is RRDtool, which in network management will most likely be used to store and process data collected via SNMP. However RRDtool can be used for many diverse purposes that have nothing to do with computer networks. The last chapter in the book is an odd one on using Java with SNMP. Specifically, the book presents the Java SNMP API known as SNMP4J. It doesn't really seem to add any functionality other than being an alternative for people who don't like to use Perl.

I liked this book very much. It had many good examples and it answered all of the questions I had previously had on SNMP starting from the beginning with what is SNMP and what can it do for you? I would highly recommend it to any network administrator who is planning on workng with SNMP.

5 out of 5 stars Essential SNMP, Second Edition, Review.......2007-01-17

An excellent book that can help not only network engineers but Unix system administrators.
A lot of doubts that I had about SNMP went away and I feel much more relaxed with this topic in technical circles.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but where is there one for idiots?.......2007-01-11

I pretty much hate SNMP. It's stems from not understanding it. This book has given me a grasp on some of the concepts, but has refered to a few things that I am supposed to already know. It's not for beginners.

        Book Description

For a city like no other comes a book like no other. The New York Chronology tells the epic story of how a remote trading outpost and fishing village grew into the "world's capital" as we know it today. In tens of thousands of chronological entries, James Trager marches year by year through both the defining and incidental moments in the city's history, from the arrival of Florentine navigator Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524 to the sad closing of Ratner's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side "after 97 years of serving blintzes, kasha, latkes, and matzoh brei."

With impeccable scholarship, humor, and an astonishing level of detail, Trager's information-packed entries straddle 32 separate categories that define this great metropolis. Turn to any year and you'll get a vivid sense of what life was like for New Yorkers at that time -- the political and financial developments that shaped their lives; the books, magazines, and newspapers they read; the restaurants, nightclubs, shows, and sporting events that entertained them; the fitful progress of their neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, public works, transportation systems, and so much more.

Of course, New Yorkers themselves hold center stage, and The New York Chronology is loaded with eye-opening and colorful stories about its famous, infamous, and long-forgotten inhabitants. From society events and publicity stunts to scandals and murders, here are scores of offbeat tidbits that you simply won't find in a more conventional history. Handsomely illustrated with more than 130 photographs and drawings, it is an entertainingand essential book for New York lovers -- a homage as grand as the city itself.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars Mostly ignores two+ centuries.......2007-01-03

I am not an expert on the history of New York and bought this book because I am interested in the pre-revolutionary period of the city's history. The book's subtitle implied that the whole history of the city would be covered, but it is not covered very evenly. The very rich first 250 years of the history are covered in a scant 32 pages. The first half of the 19th century gets about 50 pages, while the rest of the 19th century gets 170 pages. The incredibly bloated 20th century gets over 600 pages. This book is really just a chronology of the city of New York since the Civil War. The part of New York's history that it does cover thoroughly (i.e., 1860 to the present) it seems to cover well, but that is only half the story. I hope someday someone (else) will do as thorough a job on the other centuries of the city's history.

        5 out of 5 stars Impressive achievement.......2004-03-05

        Impressive achievement

What a great gift for someone who thinks he knows everything there is to know about New York -- or wishes he did. The sheer amount of information here is impressive, and would be daunting except that the layout is so easy to follow. Years appear at the top of each page for quick reference and handy symbols alert the reader to category of information in each entry within the year: e.g., music, transportation, everyday life, theater. (Page numbers are at the bottom.)

The index is detailed and easy to use once you realize that a given church will be listed under "churches" or your favorite hotel under "hotels."

The major delight in the chronological arrangement is that the reader can put each entry into its historical perspective. I was very interested to learn, for example that Trinity Church on 5th Avenue and Intercession at 155th were completed the same year, by the same architect.

As might be expected, the bulk of the information covers the 20th Century. Trager dispenses with the early years in about twenty pages and reaches the 20th Century in a couple hundred. Even so, he does not slight detail in those earlier years.

Most readers who are already familiar with Manhattan will probably have a couple of topics they will use to check for accuracy. Mine is Minniesland/Audubon Park. Trager scores points. He gives John J. Audubon several entries and mentions the Minniesland purchase as well as Audubon's death and Madame Audubon selling the original prints to the New York Historical Society. Trager appears to have made an error in acreage, however, (possibly a typo) writing that Audubon bought 24 acres in 1841 and sold 23 of them to Richard Carman in 1843 (who then sold them to Trinity Church for use as a cemetery, which still exists). That would have left Audubon with only one acre, which is a quick look at an historic map will show is not correct. The 24 acres should probably be 42 acres to leave enough for the land that became Minniesland and later Audubon Park.

As another reviewer has already mentioned, with this much information, that sort of error is to be expected, and can be corrected in future editions, which this delightful book fully deserves.

Despite the blips, this is a great addition to anyone's New York history shelf.

        5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!...flaws and all.......2003-12-29

James Trager has been writing fascinating, unique, histories for a lot of years. I first encountered him through "The Food Book" (which has apparently transformed into "The Food Chronology") which offered an awesome compedium of food lore both simple and arcane. (I still get a kick out of reminding my friends that a lobster is really nothing more than a glorified cockroach!) I have used his "People's Chronology" as a bible on any number of writing projects from trivia contests to advertising copy. And now he has compiled "The New York Chronology", once again exhibiting a mind-boggling grasp of hard facts and fascinating trivia. Since the book runs over 900 double-columned pages, I haven't read all of it. And that's as it should be. Sure, you could read it as a straight narrative, but the real pleasure comes from opening it a random, reading one or two entries, and being enthralled enough to realize you've gone several pages beyond your orignal intent. However, in a compendium this big, and this full, some errors are bound to appear. While there have been two or three "facts" that I have been a bit skeptical about, (were Romney Brent and Nigel Bruce REALLY both born in Mexico?) there is at least one I know to be in error. The "movie" entry for 1943 lists the Loretta Young/Brian Aherne flick "A Night to Remember" as being about the sinking of the Titanic. While there was a British film of that name about that tragedy, the '43 film was a comedy/mystery taking place in Greenwich Village. As you can see, however, the "flaws" I've uncovered thus far are almost exclusively in entries about minor subjects. They should not keep anyone from buying, reading, and treasuring this marvelous labor of love!
IMPORTANT UPDATE: 3 days later: Having delved more deeply into the chronology, I DO have to alert the reader to some more errors (alas!) Just at random, "The Boys From Syracuse" -the musical- was NOT based on the lives of the Shubert brothers (although the title was used for a book about them), it's based on "The Comedy of Errors". The ACTOR Mako was the star of "Pacific Overtures". He is not, and never has been, an ACTRESS (Thank God! Have you SEEN him? He's brilliant, but not very comely.) And, I seriously doubt that Otto Haebach wrote the lyrics to the title song in "Oklahoma". Mr. Trager knows a hell of a lot, but about show-biz, not so much. Nevertheless, I'll stand by my rating if only for the exhaustive work in the tome.

5 out of 5 stars TR's World View in Bite Sized Portions.......2001-09-10

This collection is a sampler of several hundred Teddy Roosevelt quotations. It is a little book, the kind you are more likely to pick up and browse, than read through from beginning to end.

The editor has conveniently arranged TR's missives by topic. The reader will find our most energetic president holding forth on politics, foreign affairs, voting, citizenship, family, children, motherhood, Lincoln, virtue, boxing, war, and himself among the categories. In short, this sampling covers many of Roosevelt's incredibly varied interests.

Because the topics are so varied, this collection will serve to give those not well aquainted with TR a good taste for the man's energy, passions and world views. For those of us who are TRphiles, this book is a treasure trove, for it calls forth in many ways the truly unique aspects that serve to make Roosevelt perhaps the most "American" of Americans.

Also included are books by TR, quotes about him, his thoughts on the Rough Riders as well as his stirring and famous "...In the Arena" speech.

An inspiring little tome handsomely presented.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Have It!.......2000-08-19

This book is like a: "word for the day" calendar, or a "horoscope of the day" calendar. Since this book is 184 pages; read one quote per day, then start over. BULLY PULPIT is a glimpse of T.R.'S life. It's not as time-consuming as a biography would be...

Not since: MORNINGS ON HORSEBACK have I run across a book as interesting as this one.

        ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Great little TR book.......2000-05-02

This book of TR's maxims is a wonderful little reference to have. I keep it in the bathroom for quick reading, and I'm never disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection and Arrangement of T.R.'s Quotes.......1998-06-27

This will provide all T.R. fans with a quick reference to many quotes by this great man.
The topical arrangement allows the reader to get an overview of T.R.'s thoughts on a variety of subjects. The photographs interspersed throughout the book are also a very nice touch. Well Done.
