Katherine Ramsland sets Piercing the Darkness up as a story about Susan Walsh, a wannabe journalist who mysteriously disappeared while researching "real" vampires. While that story line ultimately sees less light than the vampires themselves, Ramsland's rambunctious, rambling tales of nightclubbing, international travel, and meticulous wardrobe selection among the creatures of the night provide ample entertainment. The book traces her circuitous route through AOL chat rooms, Paris's underground tunnels, and any number of goth and "vampyre" clubs, pursuing leads and hunches that seem to materialize from thin air. What the story might lack in integrity, it more than makes up for in sheer strangeness.

With each new foray by Ramsland (previously noted for celebrating Anne Rice in several books) into the unknown, we are treated to fascinating insights into the personalities and motivations of people who might well be the world's most devoted fans of Rice's supernatural melodramas. Interesting book....reminder for WM3 supporters.......2006-09-20

The book is written in a very conversational style, and dashes all over the place. The reader would do well to remember that Ramsland wasn't JUST writing this book, but that she was researching a number of other books during her escapades.

Also for WM3 fans, please keep in mind that at the time this book was written the injustice of this case was just beginning to come to light. The commentary on it in this book was unenlightened at best, and in the years since then Ramsland has even written an article on bitemark evidence that cites the bitemarks found on the victims and exonerates the WM3.

We must in our passion and support of Jesse, Damien and Jason always speak with intelligence, and not just knee jerk reactions.

Thoroughly disappointing - keep your money........2006-02-10

The book is poorly structured - a rambling mess of anecdote and half-baked psycho-babble.

Much of the 'evidence' is based on surfing the net or unverified hearsay.

I think the author tries too hard to present her 'interviews' and meetings in a conversational style whilst trying to maintain the appearance that they are somehow transcribed. Everyone the author interviews has the same 'voice', this does not help the book's credibility.

The result is material that I simply can't take as serious journalism, let alone social-scientific or psychological inquiry. People (generally speaking), even trained academics, do not all present pages worth of cogent, structured answers to casual questions at 2am over coffee.

The 'emails' from Wraith, apparently the character driving the underlying narrative, are (IMO) clearly contrived stories from the imagination. If they are genuine then the author should have picked this before presenting them as somehow valid and worthy of the book's 'intent'. Again, credibility is an issue.

I gave up on this book after 274 pages worth of frustration and cringing. Every time I pick it up to finish it I remember why it has been collecting dust.

Finally, has anyone counted the number of times the name 'Anne Rice' is dropped into the text? Yes, Rice has been influential on some parts of the goth/vampire subculture. That's fine, mention it once and then GET OVER IT!

I had to start wondering why Ramsland had written the book and Rice hadn't....or if Ramsland received commission for mentioning Rice....or if her publisher said 'Well the only way we're going to sell this damn thing is....'.

If you want to learn something about the subculture of vampyrism I would suggest investing in the works that are the authentic products of people who invest their energy in living lives through the symbolic embodiment of vampyrism.

Unfortunately even 'V' has opening remarks by Ramsland...sigh

No Vampire or Goth should buy this book..........2005-05-21

If you took a White-bread Christian and plunked them down in the middle of the Goth Club scene--well that is the jist of this book. The author has little understanding of the Gothic Subculture, much less the diverse Vampire culture, and their deeper connotations in modern society.

She is laughable at times, misguided completely at other times, and sadly mistaken when she tries to explain the fasciantion of/for the vampire.

Anyone who has a toe in the Gothic underworld will wince at her naive observations and chuckle when she classifies Vampire: the Masquerade Role Players as potential mental cases.

In the 1970's and 80's when everyone was bashing D&D as 'The Great Evil to the Minds of Our Youth' claiming that roleplaying caused mental problems in youths. These fanatics are the same target audience this book is trying to reach. Basically it states "Vampires are somewhat real...and your kids will be warped by them." Whoever them is, because she bounces from roleplayers, to teen killers, to the Goth NightClub scene. And in her research she never uncovers the reason as to the disappearence of the journalist she is seeking.

I loved Ms. Ramsland's book "Cemetary Stories" so I was really looking forward to reading about her foray into the Vampire Culture in search of a "real" Vampire. All she found was a lot of sad lonely individuals of questionable sexual persuasion who engaged in 'Vampiric Costume Drama" for the sole purpose of having a sexual encounter. One gets the feeling that these poor misguided individuals could all benefit from a great deal of Therapy and/or some Heavy Duty Medication.Even Ms. Ramsland becomes jaded with these poor folk by the end of the book.One gets the feeling that it would be easier to find a 'real" Vampire working the Graveyard Shift at your local 7/11 than in all of the S&M clubs she visited.

Represents the local 'scene', however............2004-12-02

If you were to go to all these clubs and such like she did, you would find many characters like the ones in this book. Hell, looking through the pic section I surprisingly saw people I know! So there should not be any debate on authenticity along those lines.

However, it aims to shock the reader - and only suceeds in this towards the end in my opinion. It doesn't divulge into the lives of those who are part of a more focused community, for many it's part of a spiritual journey or part of their being since (and before) birth. True many individuals do spend time at these clubs - The music, dress, and BDSM are all aspects of other things that many enjoy. In short, these "Modern Vampires" was welcome in those ones before they were numerous enough to have their own clubs / events.

She mentioned the role-playing games but didn't once state how it influenced the writing of the Black Veil and later caused controversy, those claiming to be "living vampires" feeling as if it would make them seem like roleplayers themselves. Though even in Houses beliefs can be diverse, but they are nevertheless united.

And I don't remember any mention of Psychic vampirism and such.
Many practitioners practice both Psi and Sang.

I have heard that Ms. Katherine Ramsland recently did an interview with Don Henrie ( Vampire from SCIFI network reality show ) [...] hopefully she has asked him some good questions.

All in all, interesting work, which deviated from the point a bit (exploring underground tombs in France with partying goths)
but nevertheless would surprise many who had no inkling these communities exist.

This book was very informative and helpful and I would recommend it to others who have handhelds and don't know its full potential. I am not very "follow the directions" literate but the book was easy to follow and step by step for the dummies in all of us!

Not a bad book but the Axim is pretty self explanatory without it. It may come in handy if you want to use yours for a GPS or want to add something cool to the CF slot like a camera. Other than that, I probably could have learned just as much surfing the Web for other users.

Axim X51V Second Edition.......2006-03-15

xim Handheld Second Edition. I thought it was a hardcopy of the Axim X51V manual that dell no longer offers so I ordered it form amazon. Well, this Second Edition was not really a manual but a hard copy of what the Axim X51V can do. It is a very nice book but since the Axim is very new to me I needed a manual of everything I could do with the axim including on how to accurately work the wireless capability. I enjoyed reading this handheld second edition and it did help me a lot in understanding the axim. But, of course it was not a true manual that is very murch needed but not offered anymore by dell because people would loose their manuals and want replacement manuals that are probably expensive to reproduce since the manual would be so large. In closing I do believe as the Dell Axim Handheld Second Edition book goes it is very nice but still it does not in detail train a person in "How to Do Everything" like a Axim X51v manual would do it you could still buy one. Without more detailed information about the operating system and its methods, this book is a useless waste of time. I threw it in the trash after 15 minutes.

This book does not offer what I was looking for, namely some in-depth information on the Axim PDA. There is a lengthy chapter devoted to the stupid games you can play on this device. But I was hoping to learn how (if at all possible) you can create a shortcut to rotate the display. Or how to always have Word and Excel start up at a predefined zoom level. Instead the book tells you how to play BallBreaker.

He writes with too much evenhandedness and too little anger about what's happening to The West to suit me. Even so, there's no doubt that he cares deeply about what's being lost. This book ought to be required reading for anyone who crosses the state lines of NM, CO, WY, ID or MT.

The dark side: insightful and honest.......2006-11-08

Anyone interested in reading about the glamorized West - artist retreats in Santa Fe, Denver socialites, ski resorts in million-dollar-home settings - will probably be disappointed in this book. Frank Clifford instead takes the reader to isolated outposts where people are just barely surviving: a sheep rancher north of Vail who lives in a ramshackle trailer; one of the last residents of Jeffrey City, WY, who is sick from years of working in the now-closed uranium mines and is too poor to see a doctor; a park ranger in Yellowstone hellbent on stopping illegal hunting practices along the park's isolated boundary; a trapper in New Mexico who sometimes goes six months without human contact; a Canadian environmentalist fighting a losing battle against gas and timber companies; a group of Blackfeet Indians trying to maintain ties to their ancient culture on their reservation near Glacier NP; a ranch family in southern New Mexico frightened of the drugs and violence along the border.

A few things unite most of Clifford's subjects: a fierce independence; a hatred for governmental interference, especially when it interferes with their livelihoods; and a similar disdain for "outsiders" who they feel look down upon them as inferior people, hicks, and want to impose restrictions on how they can and should use the land (i.e. environmentalists). Clifford, who is a journalist from California, must be commended for not taking a position for or against his subjects (he realizes both sides have valid arguments) and for becoming one of them, even if it's only for a short time (he rides horses with his subjects, helps them with their cattle and sheep, etc.). The book will definitely take the wind out of the sails of anyone who pictures the West as merely a drop-dead beautiful mountain backdrop to be enjoyed while sipping red wine on a dude ranch porch. This is the real deal, the other-side-of-the-tracks picture where people count pennies to survive the year and every cow or sheep lost to a grizzly bear or coyote means they go a little bit deeper into debt. It's an eye-opening book - one of the best on the West of today that I've come across. Highly recommended.

Incredibly interesting.......2004-09-22

I am normally not a non-fiction reader, but this book caught my eye in the bookstore and I'm still recalling stories from it almost one year later!

The stories are told from such a raw human perspective, it's hard not to empathize with each of them. I live in the Rocky Mountains (not far from the Divide) and think about the issues related to life up there frequently as I view it through my windshield every day on my drive to and from work. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in knowing more about the history and present-day issues faced by people along the Divide.

Reporter gets embedded in the Rockies.......2003-09-01

Clifford is a journalist and it shines through in this book. His observations are clear and unbiased. In fact, there are few stories where he's not riding a horse, sitting in a pick-up truck or walking with an outfitter or cowboy. The stories jump all over the map along the Continental Divide of the United States. One moment you're taken for a morning coyote hunt outside of Jeffrey City, WY and the next plunged into a gathering on the Blackfeet Reservation.

The geography he travels is seen through the eyes of the long time residents who are rooted in the land. Their fortune at the mercy of the natural forces that get bigger, stronger, and more unpredictable the deeper you go into the terrain. The natural forces of weather and wildlife are but one part of the picture that Clifford paints. What makes this book unique is the author's ability to put each story in a larger context.

For the Western United States that larger context is... change. Sensing this change, Clifford takes us to meet people that are fighting to hold-on to a uniquely Western life-style. A life-style as honest and straightforward as the writing in this book.
