The impact of the European Community (EC) and EC law on taxation is becoming increasingly important. EC law influences not only national tax law but also tax treaties. This book focuses on the question of whether anti-abuse provisions in tax treaties conflict with EC law, especially with the fundamental freedoms contained in the EC Treaty. The Compatibility of Anti-Abuse Provisions in Tax Treaties with EC Law deals with this issue from the perspective of Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Though most problems arise with regard to the limitation on benefits clauses contained in the tax treaties concluded between EC member states and the United States, the book also addresses the compatibility with EC law of other anti-abuse clauses and assesses the consequences of a possible conflict. This title is published in association with EUCOTAX (European Universities Cooperating on Taxes), a network of fiscal institutes of several European universities which initiates and coordinates both comparative education and comparative research on taxation. Its projects and programs include winter courses, guest lectures, joint research projects, international conferences, and the exchange of researchers from various countries.

There is an immense tax treaty network between European Union Member States and third countries. These tax treaties are bilateral conventions, governed by international law. At the same time, these agreements are part of the internal law of the various Member States. European Community (EC) law has supremacy over domestic law and, therefore, over tax treaties as well. Consequently tax treaties must conform with EC law. This book examines the areas of tension between EC law and tax treaty law. Since most rules of primary and secondary law are directly applicable, they can substantially impact the implementation of tax treaty provisions and consequently result in serious practical ramifications. As part of its analysis this work devotes particular attention to the growing number of decisions of the European Court of Justice concerning fundamental freedoms and direct taxation. Sadly, this amazing, mind-expanding collection of work is out of print--it shouldn't be. I first came across this book in college, and never in my life had I seen such a funny, audacious, shocking, honest and passionate collection of work--especially by female cartoonists. For those of you who think female-oriented cartoons means "Cathy", this is a must-read. True-blue underground work that could put R. Crumb to shame--the "bad-girl art" in the title isn't an exaggeration. Some of the greatest cartoonists today come together in this volume--Mary Fleener, Carol Lay, Carol Tyler, Julie Doucet, Krystynne Kryttyre and more. I also recommend this for people who think comic books mean men in tights. Try to find this book! It'll knock you flat.

I have the AFI's 1931-1940 Catalogs set. I have also been an AFI member for 4 years. The catalogs are for any serious film buff! You can literally find any American actor or actress in movies you never knew that person played in. The researchers have watched the films or read the production notes and found so many unbilled extras that later became famous. I look forward to the volumes 1941-1950 which I just ordered. The wealth of knowledge is AMAZING!

This AFI Catalog is an absolute must for the serious film student, movie buff or collector. The first two volumes contain an alphabetical listing of every single feature film produced in the United States from 1931-1940. All the information you could need to know is given for each film. Everything is included: production dates, studio, director, producer, cinematographer, screenwriter, the entire cast, a brief synopsis of the film, production notes, genre, subjects and more. Nothing is left out. The third volume contains an extremely extensive index. Every personality, studio, subject and even shooting location is methodically indexed. It costs a pretty penny but is well worth it. It is truly one of a kind. Nothing else comes close!

Three cheers for the Nutshell format! There may be no better printed style for command-line environments, like the Internetwork Operating System (IOS) that runs on Cisco Systems routers. Cisco IOS in a Nutshell documents the most important bits of the frequently arcane IOS command line from aaa accounting to write, thereby providing a valuable resource to everyone who works with IOS. The reference section--which makes up about 60 percent of this book--summarizes each command (again, they're not all covered, but the ones that aren't are pretty obscure) with a statement of its scope (global, interface, line, or whatever), followed by generalized syntax summaries in the style of Unix man pages (these indicate the legal combinations of switches and parameters). Then, a detailed discussion of each switch and parameter clarifies what each is for. The whole reference section is alphabetical, with lettered dark boxes on the pages' outer edges that are easy to scan while flipping pages rapidly.

Prior to the reference section, the author explains how the IOS interface refers to and controls aspects of routers, such as lines and interfaces. He does a great job of it, too--you could do far worse than to read his explanations before going to work under IOS for the first time. The other great value of this early section is in the author's discussion of how to configure a new router by bringing interfaces, data-communication protocols (like TCP/IP), routing protocols (like Border Gateway Protocol, or BGP), and services like Domain Name Service (DNS) online. I bought this book for my Master's research paper on Cisco IOS.

I have found this book to be a good source on IOS's architecture. It has approximately 120 pages dedicated to general internetworking fundamentals such as differences betwen RIP, OSPF, and EIGRP.

The rest of the book is dedicated to IOS commands and proper syntax usages. This is a great reference book and good overview of networking concepts.

Are you a network administrator who is using a Cisco router in an IP environment? If you are, this book is for you. Author James Boney, has written an outstanding 2nd edition of a book that is for everybody who has to deal with Cisco's routers.

Boney, begins by covering the Cisco user interface. Then, he discusses several methods for uploading a new IOS image. The author continues by covering most of the configuration items that make routers more manageable and easier to tame. In addition, he shows you how to use line commands. You would never know it by today's amazon.com sales rank where currently it is ranked 1,102,030!!!! Like most of the others who have reviewed this book, I found it to be superb. Charles Slack takes us back to nineteenth century America and one mans obsession with an idea. Many folks bought into his idea for a time and some of them lost a lot of money in the process. Most people considered him a fool. But Charles Goodyear devoted most of his working life to perfecting the art of vulcanization. His efforts resulted in a product with literally thousands of commercial uses. It is a truly remarkable story told in a most engaging manner. Never mind the best sellers.....give this one a try. I guarantee you that you won't be disappointed.

A Readable History.......2003-08-20

Some pieces of history just do not seem to be the stuff of entertaining books - such as the history of rubber. Mr. Slack turns this bit of history into a thoroughly entertaining and informative book. Of course, he had the whacky Charles Goodyear to help along the way. To say Goodyear was obsessive would be to understate the case.

Mr. Slack weaves the efforts of Goodyear and his rivals to make rubber a useful commodity into a compelling read. Goodyear's successful efforts - after years of amusing failures - are purloined along the way by a rogue's gallery of figures. The title would imply a greater role for Hancock than he appeears in the book, but Mr. Slack shows his scientific methodology and buusiness sense in contrast to Goodyear's lack thereof to great effect.

As we watch Goodyear trip and fall repeatedly on his way to stumbling onto the answer, Mr. Slack explains the science behind the experiments well. Adding to the book is Mr. Slack's ability to give the historical perspective. He relates well the times and the burgeoning industrial age, so that when the answer to production of rubber is found, its impact on the age is comprehended by the reader.

A terrific and well-written history. Strongly recommended.

Great Book.......2003-01-17

I do not often write a review of something I have read, even when it is either good or bad, but when a volume as exceptional and enjoyable to read as this one comes along, it deserves praise. I particularly enjoyed the way Mr. Slack put the era in context and he was not hesitant to go off and explore and explain the background behind the players. He gives little stories that truly flesh out those individuals or companies whom touched Goodyear's life. My only complaint is that the book was so short! This is one that could have been expanded and I dare say it would not have been dull in the least! I also wish Mr. Slack would write more! Great work!

A Noble subject for sure.......2002-12-08

Very interesting that 2 books would be published in one year on this rather obscure history. I've yet to read the Richard Korman bio published earlier, but plan to. I was not at all familiar with any of this amazing story of rubber, and I'm glad I spent the time to find out. Reading this story of Charles Goodyear left me hungering for more. Certainly, the author has the facts and has done the full research, and it seems mostly to be on the page, but I think in the hands of a greater power, the subject and its huge meaning to our world today could have been better amplified. The book seems more geared to the academic mind set, and could come off a bit on the dry side. At this point, I don't know of a better book on the subject, and since it is well-researched, if you want to learn about the story of rubber, this is a good starting point!

Goodyear sacrifices all the comforts he has; he begs and borrows shamelessly from his friend and family. He is thrown into debtor's prison more than once. His family sickens from lack of heat and proper nutrition. Against all the odds, the crackpot genius does discover the long sought process and then his REAL troubles start.

If Charles Goodyear thought that no one wants to be your friend when you are unsuccessful, his list of enemies Is nothing compared to when he has success in his grasp. Out of the woodwork come charlatans and crooks all ready willing and able to steal the victory laurels from their rightful owner.

This is the kind of story that fill the headlines today and makes us all lament about hoe much better things were in the `old days'. The more things change they more they stay the same.

This gem of a book contains 50 informative accounts, each 2-4 pages, summarizing a particular incident that changed the course of history.

Titles include "The Kamikaze That Saved Japan", "How William Became the Conqueror", "The Scholar Who Tamed the Vikings", "The Only Man Who Ever Beat Hannibal", "Why Sir Walter Raleigh Lost His Head", "The Barbarian Who Created France" and "Why Leif Ericsson Ignored America", among many others.

Perhaps because of their brevity, the focused accounts pack punch. This book is best read a couple pages at a time before bed, then savored, then memorized.

These historical accounts are arranged into a series of short stories (about 2,000 words each). Each is interesting of its own, but serves also to make a moral point applicable to business, or life in general. A nice little book to keep about the house if you'd like to take a break to a short account of history which is educational and fun.

The Herbal Vade Mecum is a very good materia medica for the practising herbalist. Uses are given, dosages aren't, so you need to know your plants before you use this book.
Beginners might not do all that much with it, except for the teensy little fact that they'd get solid practical sensible cautions for the listed plants instead of the usual overly theoretical overcautious ones.
Were I a beginner, I'd buy it for that alone. No pictures, but then there are lots of picture books out there.

This highly informative, attractively priced reference packs tons of information in a well-written, accurately designed collection of herbal information book. Reccommended for botanists, pharmocognicists and horticulturists (to mention a few), this book rivals industry 'greats' such as 'Tropica' and 'Exotica' (which run hundreds of dollars) AND has a much more digestible price. The design of the book makes it easy to use at your desktop or in the field. Bravo Mr. Skenderi! Someone finally got it right!

An excellent quick reference for the professional herbalist. It is in the same niche as other quick reference books such as Potter's Encylcopedia or Lust's Herb book, but far superior to either, because 1) it has many more herbs 2) it has up-to-date and accurate details on plant chemistry 3) the author has mined the wealth of herbal literature in German, Italian, and French 4) it contains reasoned judgements on safety considerations lacking in the other books in its class, and 5) it accurately describes the most important actions and most important uses, in a well thought-out section, instead of giving long lists of theoretical or minor actions. I have used this book as a great reference about almost anything I write about America's endangered ecosystems. It includes an excellent discussion of the Arctic National Wildlife Range for instance. But it also includes really basic stuff, along with quality references, about our natural world that makes it a marvelous resource. A great buy!
