Book Description
The companion to the funniest film ever made about rock bands.
Rob Reiner's hilarious "rockumentary" about an aging British heavy-metal group has reached legendary status since its release in 1984. Largely ad-libbed by lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), lead singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer)-as well as a succession of drummers whose careers were cut short by spontaneously combusting, drowning in somebody else's vomit, or other untimely deaths- This Is Spinal Tap chronicles the band's latest American tour in a cunning satire of rock and roll culture.
Now, just in time for the theatrical re-release of This is Spinal Tap, as well as the ensuing video and DVD release, comes The Official Companion, featuring:
Fully illustrated text
A complete transcript of the film (much of the film was ad-libbed, so an ordinary screenplay can lack entire scenes)
Never-before-seen stills from cut footage
A comprehensive A-to-Z Guide featuring everything you've ever wanted to know about This Is Spinal Tap
Don't miss the chance to see behind the scenes of one of the most riotous and memorable satires of our time!
Customer Reviews:
Value to the "Tap" fan.......2003-10-14
"This is Spinal Tap: the Official Companion" has some worth to the die-hard Spinal Tap fan, but won't really mean much unless you are a big fan of the famed mockumentary. It has some good points, but overall an unsatisfying book.
The book starts off with a comprehensive timeline of Spinal Tap, followed by a meticulous transcript of the mockumentary, transcripts of the film outtakes, song lyrics ranging from goofy ballads to hard-rock fiascos like "Sex Farm." Finally there is an A-to-Z that lists not only stuff in "This is Spinal Tap," but all the rock bands that influenced it.
One of the problems with the book is the transcript. It's a good transcript (it includes ad-libs, stammers and stuff like that) but still only a transcript. It includes all the words but none of the action, which means you need to have seen the movie to understand anything at all. The song lyrics are pretty well-documented, but have some flaws. What's more, there isn't much background info to them. Why not tell us what's up with the kiddie ballad "All The Way Home"?
The A-Z reference is both tiring and informative. Wading through a sea of rock trivia that is half fiction and half fact can be a headache. But it offers more insights into the cut scenes from "This Is Spinal Tap," not to mention the influences behind it. (For example, Jeanine Pettibone was influenced by Anita Pallenberg as well as Yoko Ono)
It's not bad, but it fails to be good. Die-hard Tap fans may be interested in the lesser-known bits of trivia, and can use the transcript to identify what that drowned-out line was. But beyond that, it isn't a particularly useful guide.
Like Derek's trousers: Lacking solid, satisfying content.......2000-09-29
This one's a mixed bag, and ultimately disappointing as an official reference.
While the transcript of the film (complete with stutters and stammers) is still a fun and funny read, it's the parts detailing the dialogue of the outtakes that fans will find most interesting. A lyrics section contains a few rare songs ("Back in Harness," "Just Spell My Name") but does not offer any information on them.
The A-Z portion is written not by the book's timeline & discography scribe Chip Rowe (author of the excellent 'Spinal Tap A to Zed') but instead by British TV/film critic Karl French, who seems to have compiled the list based on whatever source materials were in his house before the deadline. Most of his bibliography is British in nature, thereby ignoring some excellent American magazine interviews (Guitar World, Marshall Law, etc) and their respective anecdotes. While the A to Z section--the meat of the book--still contains some gems on Tap elements and personalities both real and fictional, it could be more logically organized ("Racism: see bass"; the entry for bass contains an obscure Derek conversation about Pakistanis but not, say, Derek and Nigel's thoughts on racism from the actual film), omits some things I was very eager to get the official word on (No mention of how the rare song "Goat Boy" came to be, what its lyrics are, or why it has yet to be released) and is just plain incorrect in some cases (From the entry for "Big Bottom": "I'd like to sink her with my *flesh* torpedo"?).
However, there is enough redeeming content here to make fans want to pick it up--the color plate sections, featuring rare photos, is appreciated, and Michael McKean's all-too-short "prepilogue" introduction is an enjoyable, heartfelt tale about the entire project's origin. More of stuff like that from the people who created Tap and less subjective noise from French would have made this "companion" not only "official" but comprehensive as well.

Book Description
With The Incredible Internet Guide to Comic Books & Superheroes, you can go directly to the web pages that have what you want.
Customer Reviews:
Just for John Q. Public.......2005-12-20
Okay, well I don't usually write reviews, but I have to step in and call out John Q. Public. His reviews seem to be everywhere and are perhaps the most zealus, nonsensical ramblings I have ever read. If you cannot find a website with accurate information on comic characters, then you have not looked hard enough. The fact that Mr. Public suggests going to the movie theater to find out information on heroes belies his true ignorance and, quite frankly, stupidity.
Excellent source for finding info on the net.......2001-10-18
This book does a tremendous job of organizing websites for virtually any category you can think of regarding comic books and superheroes. If you're not looking for anything specific, it will still supply you with untold hours of webtime just surfing around. All this plus my Marvel Superheroes Classic RPG website is listed in it.
Essential Reference Guide for Comic Book Collectors and Fans.......2000-11-28
Unless you have read and remembered every issue of every comic book character that interests you, this book will greatly add to the pleasure and profit you enjoy from comic books.
As comic book publishers have gotten better at pushing for profits in recent years, story lines have become more complex and appear in more titles. As a result, it is easy to lose the chronology. What an incredibly nice surprise it was to find 207 fine-print pages of chronologies in this book! All of the most best known D.C. and Marvel characters are covered, as are some of the independents. For example, Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Golden Age covers three large pages of fine print type.
These chronologies have two uses. One is to follow the story line as a fan. The other is to help anticipate which comics will next rise rapidly in price. When the prices for the parts of the story before and after a comic are doing well, you can generally assume that this comic will as well. People who don't know the chronologies are at a disadvantage to collectors who do when the missing piece falls into a different title.
Another strength of the guide is that it integrates material in the form of information about the characters themselves with original art, comic books, figures, games, merchandise, cartoons, television, and films. Some of this material will tell you about upcoming plans for new products.
You can also access art that you can download to use as screensavers and icons, making your own computer much more fun to use.
If you are attracted to the writers and illustrators, they are presented, as well.
If you would like to chat on these subjects, you can locate fellow fans on-line.
The book also points you to search engines that have been optimized for comic book and super hero character searches.
A major benefit of this guide is that it takes you straight to the screen that has the material you are looking for. As a result, your time on-line will be shorter and more productive.
If you are not a comic book or super hero fan, you should consider giving this book as a gift to someone who is. It will be much appreciated. One of the best gifts any one ever gave me was a limited edition hardcover version of my favorite Uncle Scrooge comics that a read as a boy. I still treasure and enjoy it. Here is your chance to be very thoughtful, at a much lower cost.
After you have finished using the guide to increase your fun and profits, I suggest you consider where else a good understanding of chronology could make a difference to your enjoyment and profit. Perhaps you should consider the order of the development of characters in novels you enjoy reading. Or, in addition, what is the best order to read Shakespeare's plays in?
Get the order right, and your progress will be irresistible!
"Must" reading for all comic book enthusiasts & collectors........2000-04-04
In The Incredible Internet Guide To Comic Books And Superheroes, Jim Flowers takes the reader directly to websites featuring superhero and comic book characters, titles, artists, writers, films, images, audio, videos, software and more. This detailed and comprehensive guide features more than 1,300 character appearance chronologies, over 1,900 websites indexed by subject and category, a section on the X-Men feature film; as well as information on future Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman films. The Incredible Internet Guide To Comic Books And Superheroes is also a significant and highly recommended time saver for dedicated fans, allowing them to even bypass the main page of websites to go directly to the specific information they are looking for.
Great Guide for anyone interested in comic books!.......2000-04-03
This really is a great book. There are sections with links to great sites about specific characters, heroines, teams, etc. No more search engines and broken links for me!

Customer Reviews:
gradeschool .......2007-08-17
Mark Joyner and his colleagues would never stand a chance at working for a premier marketing agency. I mean premier as in Fifth Avenue or those that handle the accounts of fortune 100 companies. Any executive at a top tier corporation would loose his job for accepting this `gurus' advice.
Now why does his book have so many positive reviews? Why is Mark Joyner a millionaire?(?) Respectively Mark Joyner knows something about marketing and the psychology of influence. But then isn't this true with any charlatan? Some people see glamour working on the fringes of society as hustlers. I find respect and dignity to be a much stronger capital than a hustled buck. So yes, using advice from this book will make you `possibly' give you influence but following these characters will cost you `power' in the end.
So what do I mean by `these' guy's? I've identified about a dozen `gurus' that preach the secrets of brainwashing or hypnotic marketing that rely on each other. You can find their reviews on this book somewhere in here, and they'll mention their own book. I have accidentally purchased a couple of these books.
This book along with those written by the other guru's have one thing in common. They regurgitate information from a respectable source. In this case the regurgitation
Is fourth class and perverse. I believe seventy five percent of it comes from a single source and the other twenty five percent is therefore completely meaningless. I say this because (Mr.) Joyner relies on the principals of a single scholar in the field of social psychology specifically exploring the principals of persuasion. There are so many more principals and cutting edge studies out there that Mr. Joyner's singular `academic' resource demonstrates how questionable of a expert he is.
Now to his credit he has applied these principals to his own success and shares them. What is effectively going on is the Internets version of a super hyped INFOMERCIAL. If you're a respectable business owner and you take the advice of Mr. Joyner and his inner circle you'll loose the respect of your clients eventually and then your personal dignity. If you do as Mr. Joyner has done, you may read the influence theories in a textbook on social psychology and simplify it, perverse it, then regurgitate it into a poor and incomplete marketing strategy and sell it at three hundred times it's worth in hype. You'll indorse Mark Joyner, he'll endorse you in return. You'll apply what you learn and get some poor needy people to (commit) to your insights, effectively forming a psuado business cult. As much as a genius you think you may be your not going to crack Wall Street and forget pulling the strings at capital hill because you'll have no power `hustler'.
I buy a lot of Marketing, business, and `academic' books on influence. It is inevitable that I buy a bad apple here and there. Mark Joyner has reduced himself beyond any `Gentleman' to sell you on his AUTHORITY as a former officer of this country.

Book Description
A Path to Combinatorics for Undergraduates is a lively introduction not only to combinatorics, but also to mathematical ingenuity, rigor, and the joy of solving puzzles. This unique approach to combinatorics is centered around unconventional, essay-type combinatorial examples, followed by a number of carefully selected, challenging problems and extensive discussions of their solutions. Topics encompass permutations and combinations, binomial coefficients and their applications, bijections, inclusions and exclusions, and generating functions. Each chapter features fully-worked problems, including many from Olympiads and other competitions, as well as a number of problems original to the authors; at the end of each chapter are further exercises to reinforce understanding, encourage creativity, and build a repertory of problem-solving techniques.
The authors' previous text,
102 Combinatorial Problems, makes a fine companion volume to the present work, which is ideal for Olympiad participants and coaches, advanced high school students, undergraduates, and college instructors. The book's unusual problems and examples will interest seasoned mathematicians as well.

Right Wing Tripe.......2004-08-19
Pendley has written a book full of tales of people who are act out of greed and self-interest. If Pendley and the people in this book had their way America would have no public land, no protected forest, and noise pollution from the many many roads they'd build thru our pristine wildernesses would destroy any wilderness experience.
Pendley and the people he celebrates have a view of the future that looks forward no farther than next week. They are trying to destroy what we cherish. Because true liberty is the freedom to go where you want and experience our great country in its natural state...not whats left over after corporate interests have taken their toll.
Finally...........2000-08-30
Thank goodness there is finally a counterbalance to the eco-craziness that has blindly trampled individual liberty. Pendley clearly argues a point one would think was obvious: people are important. This work is a powerful antidote to those who would prefer to see the West (among other areas) people-free. This book is bound to annoy, and hopefully educate, the droves of band-wagon armchair ecologists in America today.
Yecch!.......1999-06-30
'It Takes a Moron' would be more like it; this incredible- literally- compendium of semi-fictitous tales of the selfish, the ill-informed and the misguided virtually defines the term 'wise use'. If you think people who fight on a daily basis to preserve wildlife, wild places, clean air, clean water, the ozone layer, the oceans, our forests etc. etc. are the 'enemy' and find resistance to their efforts 'heroic' you might enjoy this drivel by James Watt's bestest buddy. Probably not.
