It was not the best Asterix I've read........2003-12-09
As a child, I read all of the "classic" Asterix books in Swedish. As an adult now living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. In addition, this time I am also reading the new ones, like this one, and I am still enjoying it.
This book was not as entertaining as most of the other Asterix books are. Maybe because it is really a movie made into a book. There is another similar, slightly shorter, but much more entertaining Asterix story called "The great crossing". I have to admit that "the great crossing" story book fell apart (the pages fell out), while this one did not. Is that Murphy's law, or an abberation? If you cannot buy another Asterix, then it is still worthwhile buying this one.
I find that children the age 5-13 usually really enjoy these books, not just mine. These comic books are a great way to teach children ancient history. Naturally, the adult needs to help with the differentiation between fiction and history. From these books, my kids have learned about the Roman Empire, the ancient Greeks, the Vikings, the Goths, the Phoenicians, ancient Gaul, ancient Egypt, and the ancient Mediterranean world in general.
pick a different asterix book.......2001-01-01
i have all the asterix books and am a big fan. that being said, dont buy this one. its a cheesy "book of the film" version with sub par illustrations and dialog. get the real version, Asterix and the Great Crossing instead.
it was truly witty.......1999-01-03
I found it to be a good read. My childeren loved it. There were some things that they would not understand unless they had been told.

Book Description
The Dave Barry of the hiking scene, Ron C. Judd gleefully punctures the rainfly and raises blisters as he lays down the rules of engagement in God's Country. A punchy collection of lists, true stories, jokes, and actual useful information, this witty, wide-ranging guide covers necessary and not-so-necessary topics, including tips on surviving woodsy nightmares like poison oak, park rangers, and the dreaded Family Camping Trip; a field trip to REI's flagship store, the mother ship of camping gear; the oxymoron of RV camping; outdoor hygiene basics— dig it in or pack it out?—and getting oriented by means of a map, compass, GPS, and the campground satellite dish. The book also provides a rundown on equipment, from choosing footwear and backpacks to weighing the merits of the Therm-A-Rest Deluxe.

Numbers Puzzles Galore.......2002-03-11
This is a good book if you like numbers puzzles.
It contains different types of puzzles such as
grids, sequences, logic and many others.
They can be difficult at times; with a little
patience, they can be solved.
Made me wish I was Einstein........2001-02-06
Not much I can say about this book... It's full of VVVery difficult number puzzles... at least for me. Okay, so I don't get 'A's for my grades at school, but I think that even you might find it a little difficult. The way I see it, you will need lots of paper, patience and time, say 30 minutes or so to solve even the easiest of these.
Why? Because basically, you are asked how many combinations can be formed from such and such. Example: How many ways get 31241 by adding prime numbers only? This is not really what the problems are like in the book, they are far more complicated than that.
For me, it's just too much. I can't even do 1 single problem. I can't even look up the answers because uses some sort of a legend that I can't understand. But if you have an above average intelligence or are mathematically gifted, you will probably find some obscure short cut to the problem a la Gauss. For the rest, forget it.
Word of warning: these are purely number problems. I can't tell if logic will help or even plays a part in this book, but the problems are NUMBER problems.

Customer Reviews:
Cool.......2007-04-28
This is a very cool book, lots of fun to read and browse. High quality glossy paper and tons of pictures. Highly recommended.
Very comprehensive.......2007-04-26
I've been designing games for a while now and started programming them. This book was a good book to reference games to see what I could and couldn't program.
As for the actual content of the book... the author makes the material interesting. His organization of the book could have been better. It goes in chronological order (most of the time). The visual design of the book is outstanding. The appendix in the back is good.
Its a great book for the most part.
This book is so awesome.......2007-03-19
I learned SO much about the video game industry. I wasn't all that interest in video game history at first. I was looking at this book for nostalgia purposes. I was reading a friends copy and I got hooked. Luckily, I found it used on Amazon.
If you think you'd be remotely interested, buy this book!
Absolutely terrific! A must read for videogame fans........2006-11-29
An amazing and comprehensive picturebook of all electronic games through history (not just "video" games). This book has some great photos of consoles and game prototypes you may have never heard about -- like the Atari Game Brain and Cosmos. It's just packed with images on thick glossy paper. My only complaints is there were no images of the very first videogame, "Tennis for Two". The book is also so thick and heavy, I don't know how long the binding will last under multiple readings. But these are minor gripes. A must have if you are interested in the beginnings of electronic entertainment.
Amazing Book!.......2006-03-11
It's a very colorful book, full of information and ilustrations. I am argentinian and I understand it all perfectly. Very recomendable!

Book Description
The Atlantic & Great Western Railroad was one of the earliest and largest east-west railroad projects in the United States. It was the dream of American builders William Reynolds of Pennsylvania and Marvin Kent of Ohio. By using the non-standard six-foot gauge, these men helped construct a trunk line connecting the Atlantic tidewater with the Mississippi River "without break of gauge."
Money for the construction came principally from European investors, like Don Jose de Salamanca of Spain, while Great Britain furnished the iron. A strong English support group included James McHenry, Sir Samuel Morton Peto, and the brilliant engineer, Thomas Kennard. This American-European enterprise represented an unique example of intercontinental cooperation in railroad history.
Reynolds was the first president of the Pennsylvania and New York divisions of the A&GW. This published history is the first published source on this important railroad.
With a memorable talent for detail and authority, Reynolds demonstrates how difficult it was to build a railroad against a backdrop of the Civil War. The lack of capital and resources, the scarcity of labor, the control of the oil market, and the endless struggle against hostile public opinion and fierce competitors like the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central posed challenges that were not easly overcome. Yet, as Reynolds states, "in the face of all these formidable obstacles, the enterprise was crowned with success."

Book Description
The University of Chicago Readings in Western Civilization (nine volumes) makes available to students and teachers a unique selection of primary documents, many in new translations. These readings, prepared for the highly praised Western civilization sequence at the University of Chicago, were chosen by an outstanding group of scholars whose experience teaching that course spans almost four decades. Each volume includes rarely anthologized selections as well as standard, more familiar texts; a bibliography of recommended parallel readings; and introductions providing background for the selections. Beginning with Periclean Athens and concluding with twentieth-century Europe, these source materials enable teachers and students to explore a variety of critical approaches to important events and themes in Western history.
Individual volumes provide essential background reading for courses covering specific eras and periods. The complete nine-volume series is ideal for general courses in history and Western civilization sequences.

Book Description
Since the publication of the first edition in 1966, Eye and Brain has established itself worldwide as an essential introduction to the basic phenomena of visual perception. In this book, Richard L. Gregory offers clear explanations of how we see brightness, movement, color, and objects, and he explores the phenomena of visual illusions to establish principles about how perception normally works and why it sometimes fails. Although successive editions have incorporated new discoveries and ideas, Gregory completely revised and updated the book for this publication, adding more than thirty new illustrations. The phenomena of illusion continue to be a major theme in the book, in which the author makes a new attempt to provide a comprehensive classification system. There are also new sections on what babies see and how they learn to see, on motion perception, and tantalizing glimpses of the relationship between vision and consciousness and of the impact of new brain imaging techniques. In addition, the presentation of the text and illustrations has been improved by the larger format and new page design. The thousands of readers of the previous editions of Eye and Brain will find this new revised edition even more attractive and enthralling.
Customer Reviews:
GOOD TEXT BOOK.......2004-07-21
The book is very good but it is structured like a text book. Its couching is a little heavy, not flowing like the divulgation books.
I found some mistakes. For example, the author says that the electric field and the magnetic field of an electromagnetic wave are out of phase (a diagram is shown) and that is not true. Since electromagnetics is not the field of expertise of the author, this is understandable and does not devaluate the rest of the book.
Classic work on perception, updated.......2003-09-03
This is the classic introduction to perception and psychophysics, and remains as readable and entertaining as it was 30 years ago when I read the first edition. Gregory's was one of the few books on the subject accessible to the non-specialist that tackled some of the more difficult topics, such as how the physiology and anatomy of the eye contributes to perception, as in the case of physiological optics, retinal receptive field geometry, ocular domimance and saccadic eye movements, as well as other traditional areas such as color perception, space perception, and so on. There are also very engrossing discussions of split-brain experiments and optical illusions, probably the most fun part of the book for most people, which are worth reading just for themselves. Overall this is still a great book and one that everyone should read to gain better understanding of how their own visual systems and brains work to enable us to see and perceive the many simple and complex aspects of the visual world. After reading this book you'll have much of the background to read David Marr's later book, entitled simply Vision. This important work contains discussions of more complex visual cortical brain mechanisms and of Marr's important work in that area. Marr discusses his important concept of the "primal sketch" for extracting line primitives, which relates to retinal receptive-field geometry, and then works up from there to more sophisticated spatial-frequency filtering algorithms and mechanisms--ideas that revolutionized our understanding of vision and the brain.

A great introduction to the psychology of perception.......2000-05-13
Who would have thought that a book about the mechanics, physiology and psychology of seeing could be such a riveting read? This is one of the best popular science books around, and I don't even think Gregory intended it to be a layman's book--it's just so well written and interesting that it will delight lay readers as well as its intended student audience.
Gregory starts with a short chapter intended to outline some of the less-obvious issues in understanding how we see. Here, as well as throughout the book, he uses optical illusions to make points. The next chapters cover light itself, and the structure and function of the eye and brain, including accounts of how the eye evolved. The rest of the book discusses brightness, colour, and questions such as "How do we visually determine size?" and "Can machines be taught to see?"
The book is full of accounts of intriguing experiments and case-studies. Two examples of many: Gregory and a colleague, Jean Wallace, worked in 1961-1962 with a man of 52 whose sight was restored to him after a life of blindness. The account of his slow and incomplete adaptation to the world of sight, and his ultimate slide into depression and death (he had been active and capable as a blind person) is fascinating and moving. Another example: Gregory discusses various researchers who spent some time wearing vision apparatus that dramatically changed their perceptions, such as Stratton, Ewert and the Paterson's. In these cases--where for example the wearer could see their own body suspended in front of them, or see everything upside down--the details of the adaptations of perception are thought-provoking and still not completely understood.
Strongly recommended.
