Book Description
With sharp humor, Rubin expounds on everything from fast food to bovine plastic surgery. Nothing is sacred in this udderly funny cartoon book.
Book Description
There's some new and fascinating material here from the extraordinary mind of that well-known author and sailor, John Vigor. One glance will convince you that this is not at all your usual boating book. It's quirkyfunny in some chapters, serious in some, and quite over the top in others. And yet, as experienced boaters will realize, it's really a book about safety at sea. This is the basic thread that runs all the way through it, supplemented with plentiful advice about how you can improve your odds of survival in various circumstances.
Some of it may not be standard advice, of course. Vigor's famous "denaming" ceremony, for instance, doesn't look like boating safety advice at first glance. But it is. It protects you from bad luck at sea, and sailors the world over have recognized this. The ceremony is the most-requested article on several Internet Web sites and has been translated into several foreign languages.
But Vigor's fertile imagination doesn't stop there. In this book he also introduces us to 19 other prayers, rituals, and ceremonies that boaters might need at some timeeven the rites for burying a person at sea.
This unique collection also includes four riproaring curses you can use against other boaters or boatyard owners who charge too much. Do these curses contribute to safety at sea?
"Why yes," says Vigor. "They let you blow off steam. They calm you down, lower your blood pressure, and allow you once again to make the rational decisions that lead to safe navigation."
Better keep a copy on board. You never know when you'll need a burial ceremony.
Or a good laugh.

Book Description
Before the tumultuous events of the 1960's ended his long life, "Sambo" prevailed in American culture as the cheerful and comical entertainer. This stereotypical image of the black male, which developed during the Colonial period, extended into all regions and classes, pervading all levels of popular culture for over two centuries. It stands as an outstanding example of how American society has used humor oppressively. Joseph Boskin's Sambo provides a comprehensive history of this American icon's rise and decline, tracing the image of "Sambo" in circuses and minstrel shows, in comic strips and novels, in children's stories, in advertisements and illustrations, in films and slides, in magazines and newspapers, and in knick-knacks found throughout the house. He demonstrates how the stereotype began to unravel in the 1930s with several radio series, specifically the Jack Benny show, which undercut and altered the "Sambo" image. Finally, the democratic thrust of World War II, coupled with the advent of the Civil Rights movement and growing national recognition of prominent black comedians in the 1950's and '60's, laid Sambo to rest.

Book Description
If you used iPhoto when it first came out, you'll remember the way it slowed to a crawl once you loaded it with about 2,000 photos. Compare that to this year's model: iPhoto 6 can handle as many as 250,000 images and still have the power to run a host of suped-up features. Its new software engine lets you make changes with a drag & drop editing tool, find photos with a robust search feature, and manipulate images without affecting the originals in your master library. You can also:
- View and work on full-screen images
- Make quick edits with one click
- Work with RAW images
- Create cool new calendars, greeting cards and books
- Post photos online with the new iWeb application
- Use a method of sharing called "Photocasting"
Apple makes it all sound so easy: just drag this, click that and you're done. But, as intuitive as these features are, you can still get lost, especially if you're new to iPhoto. Not to worry. iPhoto 6: The Missing Manual gives you plenty of undocumented tips & tricks for taking advantage of the new version and every little feature packed into it.
It's the top-selling iPhoto book for good reason. With wit and objectivity, David Pogue and Derrick Story start you out with a crash course on digital photography, complete with tutorials on buying a camera, composing brilliant photos in various situations (sports, portraits, nighttime shots, even kid photography), and making digital movies. From there, you'll dive into every detail of iPhoto, from camera-meets-Mac basics to storing, searching, editing, and creating books, calendars and greeting cards. You'll learn to build a personal web site built with iWeb, and discover "Photocasting"-the new service that allows. Mac subscribers to publish photo albums online so that others can use the photos, even if they work on PCs.
With iPhoto 6, you could add 1000 photos a month for the next 20 years and not fill it. With iPhoto 6: The Missing Manual, you can get going in no time.
Customer Reviews:
A beginner's bible for iPhoto 6.......2007-05-13
As a beginner with digital photography, there is a great deal of iPhoto that is intuitive;however, there are so many options and errors that can be made,at least in my limited experience, that this book is a constant reference guide. I previously purchased "Switching to Mac,The Missing Manual",and found it so valuable that I bought this "Missing Manual".This series of books has been both informative and entertaining.
Best book on iPhoto and Digital Photography.......2007-03-19
Some say lightening can never strike the same place twice. The Missing Manual series proves that wrong. David Pogue and the O'Reilly gang constantly hit the mark and spark creativity and knowledge in a variety of programs.
IPhoto 6 covers absolutely every aspect of digital photography on your Mac, leaving few stones unturned. In order to make sure you get the great photos you need and minimized the editing needed in iPhoto, Derrick Story and David Pogue make sure you buy the right digital camera for your needs and tells you the basics of lighting and composition. After reading that chapter, I looked at my own iPhoto library and understand why I liked certain shots and why others ended up on the digital darkroom floor.
After explaining how to buy a camera and create great photos, the authors take you through the steps of using iPhoto in logical order: importing, managing, outputting and of course backing up. More technical manuals need to do this. Instead of taking you through the features, they take you through the workflow.
The writing was typical of the series: clear, understandable with plenty of screen shots to explain the concepts. While I consider myself an expert on iPhoto, the book was full of subtle tips and tricks to shave hours off my digital photo management.
The strength of the book was definitely the extensive chapters on what to with your photos after they are in iPhoto. Photos are meant to be shared, not locked up in your hard drive. He went over not just the specifics of all the printing options such as photo books and calendars, but also using iMovie, iWeb, and iDVD to share the photos with the world.
The final chapters covered some more advanced options such as AppleScript and Automator. Unlike other Missing Manual books that simply point you to the website to download utilities, Pogue and Story explained some of these programs and how they can help you expand your iPhoto capabilities. The Appendix was definitely the icing on the cake handling practically every iPhoto error and it's solution, as well as walking you through the basics of every iPhoto menu command and its implications.
My only complaint was somewhat weak coverage on desktop printing of photos. I always get confused about the way to feed the photo paper and how to configure settings to get the proper output. iPhoto, the printer's software, the printer, and Mac OS X must all be in alignment to print properly. These days, I simply upload it to the drugstore website and print it there. Printing to services other than Apple's wasn't really covered either.
While iPhoto basics are simple and quick to learn, "iPhoto 6 the Missing Manual" helps you become the hands down master of digital photos on your Mac. Others will tremble in fear of your massive knowledge after reading this book cover to cover.
Pros: Covers every aspect of digital photography and makes everyone an iPhoto wiz.
Cons: Needed more coverage of desktop and third party printing of photos.
DUH! IT'S A NO BRAINER!.......2007-03-17
ANY question you might have, any project you might conjure up.....this book has all the answsers in the most easy format. A must have if you have an iMac and a digital camera!
Perfect introduction and Overview.......2007-01-15
Might not have much for experienced power users - but for me as a Mac newcomer it did the trick. iPhoto is easy to use and most things you can figure out by yourself, but this book is a big timer saver in doing so and has also some tips that you otherwise might not have figured out
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-12-14
Do you need help with your photography skills? If you do, then this book is for you. Authors David Pogue and Derrick Story, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that is designed to serve as the iPhoto manual.
Pogue and Story, begin by covering buying, using, and exploiting your digital camera. Then, the authors cover the fundamentals of getting your photos into iPhoto. Organizing and filing them, searching them, and editing them to compensate for weak lighting. Next, they cover the many ways iPhoto can present those photos to other people. Finally, the authors cover a miscellaneous potpourri of additional iPhoto features, including: turning photos into screen savers or desktop pictures on your Mac; exporting the photos in various formats; using iPhoto plug-ins and accessory programs; managing Photo Libraries; backing up your photos using iPhoto's Burn to CD command; and, even getting photos to and from camera phones and Palm organizers.
This most excellent book provides an invaluable grounding in professional photography. Perhaps more importantly, this book gives you all you need to know about digital photography!

- iPhoto 4 pulls photos from your digital camera and then helps you organize and present them--as a slideshow, Desktop picture, screen saver, email attachment, Web page, DVD, printout, or hardbound photo book.
- iMovie 4 turns those old, seemingly endless home movies that bore everyone to tears into short, fun, tightly edited highlight reels that friends and family actually beg to watch.
- iDVD 4 transforms your iMovie productions and digital slideshows into Hollywood-style DVDs that play on everyday DVD players.
- GarageBand is the all-new program that turns your Mac into a digital music-recording studio.

His authoritative, witty, all-inclusive iLife '04: The Missing Manual gives you the essentials of every program in the iLife '04 suite. Pogue highlights the newest features and improvements, covers the capabilities and limitations of each program, and delivers, in one volume, countless goodies you won't find anywhere else: undocumented tips, tricks, and secrets for getting the very best performance out of each and all of these life-changing new applications. iLife '04: The Missing Manual: it's your guide to livin the iLife!
Customer Reviews:
The book that should have been in the box........2004-11-22
Under the general name of iLife, Apple includes five software packages that are oriented to your creative expression and entertainment. While the programs are nifty, the documentation that comes with them is somewhat less than outstanding. David Pogue, has created a series of books called "The Missing Manual." In this manual, he provides what is missing for the iLife software, the missing manuals.
The five software packages included in iLife include: iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, and GarageBand. Mr. Pogue highlights the newest features and improvements of iLife '04, covers the capabilities and limitations of each program within the suite, and delivers countless goodies not found anywhere else: undocumented tips, tricks, and secrets for getting the best performance out of every one of iLife's life-changing new applications.
First figure should be more prominent.......2004-09-26
I have trouble believing the basic premise of the book. That Apple bundled together 5 very useful programs (iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, iDVD and GarageBand) into something it calls iLife, and then released it with no hardcopy instructions! Granted, Apple is generally considered to be a very innovative company. Its products like these here are typically the most intuitive in the computer industry. But surely it is arrogant to omit a manual. If nothing else, it voluntarily cedes revenue that passes to the author of this book. An Apple shareholder might reasonably be upset.
You can read the book as a very natural continuation of Pogue's other successful books on the Mac. He shows how Apple put together a very coherent group of programs. Pogue demonstrates a higher level synergism, aptly summarised by the first figure in the book. It shows the 5 programs as vertices on a circle. Directed arcs are drawn between these vertices if data can be transferred in that direction between them.
This figure is so compelling and succinct that it should have gone on the cover. Or at least reproduced on the inside cover, so that you can easily and often refer to it, whilst going through the text. [Think of a chemistry book, with the periodic table on the inside cover.] It neatly encapsulates the entire reason for the book. Think about it. Without discussing the ability to transfer data between the programs, we really have 5 separate programs. The book would then cleave into 5 nonintersecting portions, each of which would be outweighed by other more comprehensive books devoted to each program. The figure and its elucidation give meaning and value to the book.
Reasonably deep, meant for intermediates.......2004-09-17
The book has reasonably in-depth coverage of the five iLife applications in iLife '04: GarageBand, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD. The content is not step-by-step for beginners but rather for people that understand the basics of Macintosh applications and have some experience with the applications. The text is well written and illustrations are used effectively. All of the applications, save iDVD, are covered thoroughly. But that's ok since IDVD gets short shrift in every manual.
For true beginners I would recommend buying the O'Reilly manual for the application that you are likely to use the most. For example, I think photographers will get a lot out of iPhoto 4: The Missing Manual. What's the difference? There is more exposition, which eases the learning curve, and there are more tips and tricks. But if you are a Macintosh user with a reasonable amount of experience who is looking for a book that covers all of the applications at a reasonable level, then this book should appeal to you.
For genuine beginners I would also recommend looking at Peachpit Press' "The Macintosh iLife '04".
Book Description
The Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, more commonly known as Libya, rests at the intersection of three worlds--Arab, African, and Mediterranean. Early African trade routes passing through Libya linked Central Africa with the North African Coast and the cultures of the Mediterranean sea. Libya's present-day strategic location, combined with its extensive oil reserves and revolutionary leadership, have kept this sparsely populated state at the forefront of nightly news for nearly three decades. Much is discussed yet little is understood, and Libya remains an enigma in world affairs. Its internal and external policies often provoke wide-ranging sentiment, from praise to anger to fear to outright scorn. The third edition of the "Historical Dictionary of Libya" provides a much needed update on the old traditions and new developments of modern Libya. The book covers the early periods of Libyan history, adding background on many of its current internal struggles and much of the impetus of its modern political positions. The United Kingdom of Libya was the first North African area to achieve statehood (in 1951) and emerge from under the auspices of the United Nations. In 1969, the Revolutionary Command Council seized power from the monarchy and redirected the policies of the former regime. This book provides a valuable frame of reference to investigate the policies of the two radically different governments of 20th-century, independent Libya. Other significant changes have occurred with this edition. New entries have been added, particularly concerning the social and economic system of Libya after 1991. Additionally, outside influences on Libyan history have been clarified. Crucial entries such as The United States, Qaddafi, Chemical Weapons, September Revolution, and Revolutionary Committees, have been completely rewritten to present the most accurate, up-to-date information available. The bibliography has been expanded considerably to incorporate new material published in recent years. Several appendixes have been added to the third edition of the " Dictionary" to provide easy access to background information and detailed, focused studies of Libya. Finally a series of maps, also newly added with this edition, provide visual reference to the territorial disputes in which Libya has been embroiled during this century. So much of Libya is shrouded in misinformation and mystery. This third edition of the "Historical Dictionary of Libya" goes farther than ever to provide a concise, handy source of accurate information on one of the modern world's most enigmatic states. Reviews of the Previous Edition: "A major contribution of this work is the comprehensive and very well organized bibliography...a useful work for both the specialist and the amateur." --MESA BULLETIN "...important...As a very basic introduction, outline, and ready reference tool for modern Libya, this edition is highly recommended." --CHOICE "...a remarkably accessible assembly of useful information...a good buy." --LIBYAN STUDIES
Book Description
The history of mapping from prehistoric times to the present.
This book explores how maps were developed and why they reveal as much about the people who created them as they reveal about the world. Throughout the ages, maps have reflected religious beliefs, disseminated propaganda, expressed cultural attitudes, and promoted new theories.
Through accessible text and color images, the book traces the fascinating history of cartography. The ancient Greeks were brilliant cartographers whose mapping skills were honed as a result of the global conquests of Alexander the Great. Their understanding of a spherical Earth and how to depict it on a flat sheet of paper was nearly lost during the Middle Ages.
The book explains why in the 15th century, the value of sea charts rivaled gold as a primary target for buccaneer captains. Later, maps became status symbols among wealthy merchants who built vast fortunes thanks to thriving trade routes made possible by reliable sea navigation.
The World Through Maps is abundantly illustrated with historically important maps to explain the development of cartography. Significant maps include:
Aboriginal Dreamtime map
Ancient Greek maps including Ptolemy's map
Medieval maps of Europe
Ortelius's Atlas, World Theatre
Early maps of the New World
Lewis and Clark's maps of exploration
Modern maps in the age of satellites
Contemporary maps are so accurate and plentiful that they are often taken for granted.
The World Through Maps is a lively book that tells why this was not always so.

A tour de force.......2004-07-30
In The World through Maps: A History of Cartography, geographer John Rennie Short demonstrates a keen sensitivity to maps' undeniable appeal through an expert selection of 200 maps, reproduced in full color, and all representative of mapmaking's heights from Paleolithic times to the present. Short draws upon recent scholarship in the history of cartography (Making Space, 2004; Mapping the Republic, 2001; and Alternative Geographies, 2000), producing a multifaceted study that extends the latest thinking in cartography to a general audience. Short's other major areas of specialization--globalization, urbanism, and environmental concerns-make him uniquely qualified to address with authority precisely those issues that exist at the nexus of cartographic representation. The confluence of Short's research interests and popularizing instincts distinguishes The World through Maps from other standard books about cartography for the general public, which often focus primarily on simple chronology and description, usually with an antiquarian emphasis. By presenting a body of knowledge relating to how maps and their makers have produced the world, its contested realities, and its competing claims, Short acknowledges that those spatial appetites currently endowing new energy to social theory persist way beyond the academy. In recognizing and addressing this widening interest, The World through Maps raises the bar for all future books on the history of cartography intended for the general public.
Short's aim to sophisticate a nonprofessional audience's appreciation for the cultural significance of cartography is evidence of the utmost pedagogical dedication. He magnifies this instructive generosity through a text that is free of jargon, devoted to the clear expression of complex ideas and respectful of all levels of intelligent inquiry. For the novice, there is an introductory chapter on the language of maps. Apposite historical sidebars and succinct captions filled with an intriguing miscellany of information complete the supplementation necessary to support the new learner. The well-placed auxiliary texts combine with the chronological organization of the main text to comprise an encyclopedic primer of cartographic history. Furthermore, Short puts the reader at ease by personalizing the text with a sense of humor, well-chosen autobiographical anecdotes, and an occasional, strategic Socratic question.
Along the way of this book's very "good read," the reader will amass an astonishing amount of well-integrated knowledge regarding the historically important maps of land, sea, and sky created by the major protagonists in cartography for a variety of purposes, from metaphysical speculation to land speculation. The reader also will soon perceive that maps always have been "present at the creation," indeed have had large shares in that creation. Maps have generated, recorded, organized, and disseminated the cultural processes of dreaming about, moving through, charting, claiming, and developing territory. It is not long before the perceptive reader realizes that no place in the world is unaffected by cartography and that this has been the case ever since the first ephemeral hand gesture pointed the way. John Rennie Short masterfully narrates and illustrates both, as he says, "the story of the map and the story in the map." The World through Maps: A History of Cartography is a tour de force in terms of reaching a general audience because it not only appeals to a public understanding of geography but also elevates it.
Very disappointing.......2004-07-13
I do not wish to be as strident as the previous reviewer, but I generally agree with those conclusions. The book is very attractive but is filled with factual errors. It is a collection of very many (too many) short (just a page or a few pages) discussions of very disparate topics. There is no connection made. More disturbing than the factual errors is the overall lack of understanding of historiography that comes through. There are scenes described that could only have happened in an Errol Flynn movie. Great emphasis is given trivial issues whereas germinal events in carto-history are ignored. My overall impression is that the author is not knowledgeable in this field and has produced an error-ridden potboiler. I do not recommend this book to anyone, even rank beginners.
Rubbish.......2004-06-24
I have discarded my copy of this book. It is rubbish. The pictures are nice but the book is a chaotic mess of infobits that are unconnected. One canot learn a history of maps or mapping from this book. It is also full of errors. He seems to confuse Apianus with Munster and can't tell a Munster from a Schedel. and doesn't know the difference between a globe and armillary sphere. The book seems to be a compilation of unedited snippits submtted by students - there is no contextual wholeness. I have collected maps seriously for about 15 years and find this book irritatingly full of glaring errors. It is potentially damaging to anyone who wants to learn about maps.

Book Description
This superb volume describes the events and ramifications of a revolt within the political science discipline that began in 2000 with a disgruntled e-mail message signed by one “Mr. Perestroika.” The message went to seventeen recipients who quickly forwarded it to others, and soon the Perestroika revolt became a major movement calling for change in the American political science community.
What is the Perestroika movement? Why did it occur? What has it accomplished? What remains to be done? Most important, what does it tell us about the nature of political science, about methodological pluralism and diversity, about the process of publishing scholarly work, and about graduate education in the field? The contributors to the book—thoughtful political scientists who offer a variety of perspectives—set the Perestroika movement in historical and comparative contexts. They address many topics related to heart of the debate—a desire for tolerance of methodological diversity—and assess the changes that have come in the wake of Perestroika. For political scientists and their graduate students, and for those interested in the history or sociology of social sciences, this volume is essential reading.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you, Prof. Monroe, for tackling the taboo.......2006-12-15
An excellent overview of the debate that strikes at the wizened heart of a once-mighty discipline. The descent of political science (as practiced in the USA) into method-driven, statistical irrelevance reached a breaking point just a few years ago: the tide is now turning, thanks in no small measure to this book.
