Book Description
Reviled by the public and disowned by most of its authors, the poll tax is the most celebrated disaster in post-war British politics. This book tells for the first time the full and gripping story of the policy that toppled the century's longest-serving Prime Minister and brought grandmothers
into the streets in protest. Drawing on unique access to the often conflicting accounts of many of the leading players, the authors paint an extraordinary picture of the journey of the poll tax from conception to demise. The authors assess the light the affair casts on the workings of British
government, and draw conclusions that are just as compelling as the events they describe. Looking at each of the main government institutions in turn, they show how the entire episode undermines the conventional wisdom about the workings of British government.

Checks and balances.......1996-12-17
Failure in British Government: the Politics of the Poll Tax by David Butler, Andrew Adonis, &
Tony Travers
Anyone who advocates changing our system of government to a parliamentary system should
read this book before he sticks his other foot in his mouth. It reads almost like one of Dr. Dörner's
experiments. It is a story of how some seemingly intelligent politicos come up with an idea that
can charitably be called assinine and push idea right through all the so-called checks and
balances of government in order to make it policy. Neither the Opposition, the House of Lords,
the Monarch, the press, nor the civil service lifted a finger to stop it. Indeed, the only opposition
officially given to the poll tax was from the fringes of the far left. Nevertheless the poll tax of
1990 produced the same effects as the poll tax of 1381: riots in London (the same parts of
London even), widespread tax evasion, government finances in shambols, and the end of some
promising careers.
"What a botch up. What a bloomer. What a gaffe, bungle, goof, fluff, fiasco, boner,
clanger, howler and flop. What a fatheaded, boneheaded, dunderheaded, muttonheaded,
knuckleheaded, chuckleheaded, puddingheaded, jobernowled wash-out of a cock-up,"
opined the editor of the Sunday Times with typical understatement. It was so awful that some of
its participants defend their actions by pleading incompetence and its leader, Thatcher, still
hasn't learned the lessons from the disaster. (The lesson: Progress comes not from
implementing bad, old ideas but bad, new ideas.)

Beautiful Production Needs Better Narrative.......2006-11-04
Back in 2001, Israeli writer Keret's collection "The Bus Driver Who Wanted to be God and Other Stories" was one of my favorite books of the year. So, I was psyched to see that he'd taken one of its stories ("Kneller's Happy Campers") and hooked up with well-known NY-based illustrator Tomer Hanuka to create a graphic novel. The story originally ran in segments in Hanuka's comic book, Bipolar, and here gets a really nice square format treatment in rich black and metallic silver ink on a lovely paper stock.
The story opens from the bottom of a grave, as protagonist Mordy informs us that he committed suicide. Immediately thereafter we learn that he is now "living" in a kind of afterlife inhabited solely by those who have killed themselves. It's very much like the "real" world, only most people walk around scarred by the manner in which they killed themselves (for example his sidekick sports a large bullet hole in his forehead). The exception are "Juliets" -- those who used methods such as poison or ODing, that left them unmarked. In any event, 20something Mordy leads a slackerish afterlife, holding down a crummy job at a pizzeria, and going to the same bars every night and never meeting anyone he connects with. The problem is that he pines after his presumably still living ex-girlfriend, who was ostensibly the reason for his suicide.
About a third of the way into the story, he learns that she also killed herself, and so he drags his pal Uzi off on a quest to find her. They drive out into the countryside, pick up a gorgeous hitchhiker, and end up at a weird kind of kibbutzish place where people can perform little miracles. The plot gets even more surreal after that, and sort of disolves into nothing. The problem is that while there are flashes of bizarre brilliance here and there (including a cameo by Kurt Cobain in which everyone finds him annoying), people who commit suicide are essentially unsympathetic narcissistic characters. It's pretty much impossible to care very much about Mordy or his quest, and so while Hanuka's art is top-notch, one can't help but wish for a better story. In many ways it's the kind of story that probably actually works better in its original prose form, where the reader's imagination is left with a little more leeway. Still, it's very nice as an artistic piece, for those who appreciate such things, and I will check out another of Keret's graphic adaptations, "Jetlag".
This story is also available in prose........2006-10-17
Actually, I do not own this graphic novel.
However, the prose version of it is the last story in Keret's "The Bus Drive Who Wanted to Be God," where it is titled, "Kneller's Happy Campers." Read it!
Be sure to read Keret's other collection of short stories, available in English translation, "The Nimrod Flip-Out."

Hilarious bestseller. A must read for moms, dads, and kids........1996-07-06
This is a collection of captivating tales from the bright side of family life. You'll find yourself greatly encouraged and deeply touched as you identify with the wild and wacky things that come hand in hand with the adventure of family living. With 21 short stories, award-winning author and columnist Phil Callaway shows that our blunders and bloopers can turn into life's greatest blessings. You'll agree with Bob Hope's joke writer Martha Bolton: "'Honey, I Dunked the Kids' should be retitled 'Honey, I Just Wrote a Bestseller." I enjoyed every page. You will too.'" An added bonus: every chapter is illustrated with hilarious cartoons from syndicated cartoonist John McPherson

Book Description
No national film industry on earth seems to have been subject to more constant surveillance, re-definition and re-direction than the Australian. This title reflects the remarkable diversity of Australia's feature film output since 1990 as it balances familiar box-office successes with many lesser-known movies. The book tracks some of the thematic shifts which have accompanied the re-definition of Australian filmmaking over several important issues, including gender and ethnic relations, the portrayal of masculinity, national identity, the landscape and environment used in films and the connection between cinema and television. The collection draws together both new and established writers in the field from Europe and Australia and includes a comprehensive filmography listing Australian feature film output in the 1990s.

I also think this is Undergraduate thesis..........2002-11-04
It's really hard to understand why this has got a series of 5 star rating...
I feel really sorry to say that "this is really disappointing book" because I had been looking forward to read it.
But this only provides poor analysis, poor theoretical ground, and poor argument.
Yes, there are surely lots of things to say about Barbie, but I think you can chose another books.
Blonde Bombshell.......2002-06-04
It's so refreshing to see this outlook on Barbie with all the propoganda out there telling us this is how we should look. We're so highly influenced by everything we read or see that sometimes we lose sight of the importance of what's on the inside, not the packaging. It is important to "give kids" and "the world" a more realistic perspective of this over-advertised icon. Thanks and admiration go to the author!
Not Another Blonde!.......2002-02-07
I just finished reading this book basically because I knew of the author and wanted to see her work. I was really impressed with the writing, and so much so, I passed it along to my fiance, who in turn started to pass it to her friends. If you are into deep talks on image, perspective, or just Barbie, it's great. I honestly didn't think I would be able to understand it or get much from it because I'm a guy not into dolls, but I really took a bit away with me. I just wonder if the author ever wanted to be a blonde?
Deep Thoughts.......2002-02-07
On behalf of a study group working on a paper regarding the Barbie fascination, we found this research book perfect. We have covered the Barbie book range from texts in libraries to texts in major book stores, and have found that most of them out there are about Barbie fashion and how many times can you hear about her measurements. This book had it all. The author really covered all the basics but then took a deep personal look into what the doll truly means to women in society today. She made really interesting comparisons and gave us a full bibliography. You can tell that when writing this, she also covered all the books out there because many of hers listed as research we also found, but she truly gave her work a different spin. We learned more from her book than any other, started quite a few great discussions in class because of her insights and we were able to write an A+ plus paper that is being featured in our monthly literary newspaper. It's highly recommended by our class. Oh and other college students like us, if you want a great example of a top thesis, get this book for that reason too.
Thank you!.......2001-03-04
As a graduate student going for my masters I just want to thank you for this intriguing, in-depth, and amazing book. I have been researching Barbie for the past three months now and thankfully found this book that was a godsend in helping me analyze this icon of American culture. As for the past review I can't help but wonder what school this professor teaches at because I would like to warn his or her students to drop the class! Sounds more of an immature high school student with a grudge than of high-class well-educated professor. If you wish to dive into the world of Barbie this is the book for you!

Among the best for puzzle fans........2002-09-14
Crossword puzzles in this series are some of my mom's favorites.
They are wire-bound, making it easier to lay them flat and get down to business. But she would prefer they be laid out on single pages, and have larger type.
The puzzles are challenging without being overwhelming. These are roughly comparable to those found in the NY Times and LA Times, in both level of difficulty and in their design.
A pretty safe bet for fans, but no 5th star for the reasons above.
What's a five-letter word for five stars?.......2001-06-23
This series is easy to read and laid out conveniently. The puzzles are challenging without being insane. These are my mom's current favorites, and I would recommend them to fans of the crossword puzzles appearing in the NY Times or LA Times.

Just what I was looking for.......2007-03-23
This book doesn't contain a lot of jargon. It has pictures of how to do things and explains things in non-technical terms. Great for beginners but also useful as a refresher when you haven't used some aspect for awhile. Well laid out index so easy to find what your looking for. These people have done a good job. Hope they bring out another one more advanced.
Great book for Newbies - Like Me!.......2006-10-17
I had no idea what the interface looked like or ANY idea about how to use 3DS Max; I just knew I want to learn how to do animations.
Well, I know this book isn't going to have me making 3D animation movies, but it does give a great insight into the program's basics.
Lots of hands-on exercises, just as I like. Lots of pictures too. The authors do an excellent job of spelling out the basics and telling you exactly what you need to do to complete an excerise. And, as you move further along in the book, they "neglect" to tell you how to do something they've already covered - just like a teacher would do in class. It forces you to explore, reread (if you don't understand a subject) and practice with the program - what you need to do if you're ever going to learn to use 3DS Max.
A very well written book about the basics of 3DS Max 7.
Excellent beginner book for 3ds max........2005-07-17
I highly recommend this book to the beginning 3ds max student. It was very helpful to me, as it explained more of the basics and gave more detail behind the steps. Also, the tutorials frequently used diffent tools to accomplish the same task. This showed how to use the graphical interface, quad-menus, toolbars, etc.
I found it the best of several books I bought to get my feet wet with 3ds max. It really helped with some of the basic lighting and material concepts. While, this book doesn't even begin to touch all the features of 3ds max, it was a great primer and I'm glad I read it.
Great for Beginners!.......2005-06-07
This book is perfect for those just getting started in 3ds Max 7. There are a lot of easy to follow screen shots to accompany the text so it is possible to still follow along when you're not in front of your computer. It is written with plenty of step by step explanations of what you are doing and why as well as a great accompanying disk to help with tutorials. It even tackles some of the more difficult aspects of 3d modeling such as composition, the dreaded material editor (it even throws in a side bar about UVW unwrapping) and lighting. It is written with the beginner in mind and does a great job explaining concepts and procedures without insulting your intelligence. It may, however, be a little below intermediate users, it can be a great tool to brush up on fundamentals. I can't recommend this book enough for those looking to get their feet wet in MAX.
Perfect for newbies.......2005-05-23
The book by Till & O'Connell is great for newcomers simply because it doesn't attempt to give you too much information but only what new users might need to learn the basics of max 7. I had never turned on max 7 and within a week I was amazed as to how much I had learned without having any previous experience with 3d softwares. This should be the first book you buy if you are starting from scratch with max 7.

The Seventh Volume of The Story of Civilization! .......2004-09-02
In this, the seventh volume of the unparalleled series "The Story of Civilization," Dr. Will & Ariel Durant have compiled a compelling rendition of historical fact covering nearly a century of Europe's past from the accession of Elizabeth I of England in 1558 A.D. to the death of Descartes in 1650 A.D..
The reader will be treated to vivid historical recounts concerning: Phillip II of Spain and his "invincible armada." Elizabeth I of England, the "Virgin Queen." The Hapsburg Family. The Thirty-Years' War. The Puritan Revolution in England. Spain's fierce struggle to subdue the Netherlands. Europe's disillusionment following the brutalities of the religious wars. Cardinal Richelieu of France. And much, much more including plates and maps.
The Durants have created a prose which is free-flowing and easy to understand. This book, designed to stand alone or within the series, is a masterpiece of historical accuracy to be enjoyed by professional and layperson alike. I rate it as five stars. Superb!
Attack of deconstructivist, relativistic nonsense.......2004-05-15
Fortunately, a PH.d is not required to both enjoy and be educated by the Durants monumental achievement. They are the authors who literally built the Simon & Schuster company. (I hope Carly Simon sends flowers to their graves every year as they largely generated her families fortune!)
It is important to remember that Will Durant was an experimental academic himself (c.f. the "Ferrer School"); and he knew that nothing was so stupid that it could not be found in Academe or academics. He himself is amazingly free of this crippling disease of "institutional" scholar an expert in philosophy as well as history. He was born in 1885, and educated at a time when Truth was still a concept (self-serving misreadings of Nietzche aside) and historians were unafraid to voice opinions other than one's attacking anything and everything not conforming the usual left-wing fad of the moment.
The aesthetic is indeed stunning. The flow or eloquence is rarely interuppted over nearly 70,000 pages of written text. Of course mistakes of detail abound. As I've said in other reviews, the biggest problem area is that of the military. Too often the Durants take, especially ancient, but also more recent military histories at face value. This was due to two reasons: little interest in detailed military history and preference for things "cultural." And sensing their weakness in battle narratives (as opposed to say Keegan or Tuchman or Gibbon), they are largely absent; the concentration is on their causes and effects; the effects of battles nearly always being ephemeral.
To condemn them for "lack of perspective" or "bias" is to reveal one's own. Unlike some reviews, the Durants made every effort to balance controversies by offering both sides. If they drew a conclusion contrary to your sacred cow, it is not an indicator of bias or error (much tho' the Left attempts to conflate the two).
In certain obviously indefensible activities (the Spanish Inquisition, the genocide of Jews before the First Crusade, the Church's deepfrying heretics, Louis XIV's brutal expulsion of the French protestants (Huguenot, a corruption of a German word, "eidgenossen") the Durants' condemn it with the precision of Gibbon and the moral outrage of Barbara Tuchman or Robert Conquest.
Somethings are evil and can never be anything else. To forget that is to invite the next generations of Lenins, Stalins or Hitlers.
The Durants understood the role "bias" far better than a thousand puerile academic critiques (tho' I realize that is largely a redundant remark) and compensated for it by the effort as well as their method of "integral history" which seeks to weave the entire history of European civilization into one seamless, if not stream of conscious, narrative flow.
It succeeds brilliantly and one finds it difficult to believe that any other such "generalists"--historians these days tending to bury into the infinitesimal and cherish minutiae, thus condemning themselves to present and future obloquy--will flash so brilliant across the literary heavens any time soon.
You should always check for youself if you have doubt. The Durants are almost always right and the mistakes are those of haste or, perhaps, the preference (or distaste) for the particular subject. (It is, for instance, difficult to feel much but revulsion for Charles V and his son Philip II and their policies of tyranny, blood and bigotry).
Read with a mind open to learning, not with crosshairs seeking weakness to exploit.
Colorful Storytellers.......2003-09-12
The Durants are gifted storytellers, however sometimes it seems they're more concerned with the art of the tale moreso than the veracity of the facts. That is not to say they are inaccurate, rather that aesthetics dominates their work. My reason for making such a claim is that it seems their spin is more of an interpretation of history than a simple conveying of facts. That spin is based in a materialistic mindset. They see historical figures as being motivated primarily by shallow concerns, which I don't think was the actual case. With that established, there is a lot of material covered in this book which makes for fascinating reading. The era of the King James Bible is described. The Puritans took the Bible as their guide for daily living. "Toward 1564 they began to be called Puritans--as a term of abuse--because they demanded the purification of English Protestantism from all forms of faith and worship not found in the New Testament" (pp. 23-24). The majority of the London Protestants and of the House of Commons were Puritans.
Private libraries among the well-to-do in England were common at this time. Interestingly, public libraries were rare. John Lyly wrote a book in 1579 proposing to show that "mind and character can be formed through education, experience, travel, and wise counsel" (p. 67). The Durands mention "old Parr", who in 1635 was presented to Charles I allegedly still in good health at age 152. There is a lot of history covered in this book. I would recommend reading it with an eye of receptivity to the facts, while disregarding the commentary inserted throughout, and taking into consideration the bias of the historians.
Another excellent volume of the series..........2002-01-29
Will and Ariel Durant shine again in their seventh book of their history of European civilization. The given detailed attention to Shakespeare, Elizabeth I, Henri Quarte, Phillip II, Montaigne and many others.
The prose sparkles with wit, verve, pith and an unflagging interest and love for the subject of history and the homeland of my ancestors.
Highly recommended.
Great read and great reference.......2000-04-27
7th volume in Durant's great Story of Civilization, this chronicles European history from the reign of Elizabeth I to the Thirty Years War, including the stories of Mary Queen of Scotts, Henry IV of France, and Cardinel Richelieu.

Customer Reviews:
Math Yellow Pages Rev. Ed. for Students and Teachers.......2003-04-06
I just bought this... it is HELPFUL, in a big way! There are NEVER enough hours in the day to read all the materials you need to, in order to make sure your covering everything you need to teach your students!! This book takes the guess work out of it. There are two pages in the front with check lists, then in the back of the book are explanation in case you don't recgonize the items on the check list, one example is given of each item. Plus, after the check lists there is a page or two of all of the terms (vocabulary used for this subject) and after that each symbol is shown with the meaning of the symbol. This is much more then a dictionary however, it's as easy and quick to reference as if it were a dictionary. Students will no longer have to wait for an answer to there question while you run to see which book has that answer. Explanation are clear and easy to understand. The vocabualry lists could be given as spelling tests each week while covering a certain part of a subject. If you could see how full and yet uncomplicated this book is... it's a keeper! And one I will be using daily! One more thing, the pages while pacted with information aren't small unappealing print, they are visually appealing and not run together with other information so there is no confusion, like in other guides I've tried to use. I know I will be buying more of these yellow page books, to help take the guess work out of covering each subject throughly. Good luck! Stacey
