A must have for your Ziggy collection.......2002-11-01
This book is wonderful! A must have for any true Ziggy collector. The book displays so many items that I have never seen before. Now I am able to search for these new items and hopefully make my collection as great as the one in the book.
Doesn't Do ZiGGY Justice.......2000-05-03
I found this book poorly done. The photos are bad all around. Some are dark, cropped wrong etc. There are not enough Ziggy items. I know you can't fit everything into a book, but come on. There are hardly any mugs, candles, magnets, wrapping paper, dolls, nic nacs etc. Also the values are way off. I have been collecting ZiGGY for years and have a very large collection. I hardly found things that I had in the book. She puts in pictures of things that are broken. This book is not professional. I have been waiting for a ZiGGY book and I bought this one. Once again Ziggy is let down.
Love this book!.......2000-02-16
I was so thrilled to see that someone finally wrote a book about Ziggy collecting. I have been a Ziggy collector for years and I know there are a lot of other Ziggy collectors. Andrea has tons of great pictures of all the types of Ziggy collectibles that where produced over the years. As a collector I now know which items I have and which items to keep looking for. A must have for any Ziggy collector.

Book Description
The Arcades Project is the unfinished, final work of influential cultural theorist, critic, and historian Walter Benjamin. Until 1999, this huge, unruly manuscript, which provides a more complete picture of the diversity of Benjamin’s work than formerly available, had not been fully translated into English. Benjamin Now is the first collection of essays in English to focus on The Arcades Project.
While this essential text’s title refers to its ostensible subject—the nineteenth-century shopping arcades of Paris—The Arcades Project is a mass of cultural, political, and social material presented in the form of a vast montage. Benjamin Now reconsiders the significance of his theories and writings in light of this final project. The contributors gathered in this special issue—several of whom participated in the translation of The Arcades Project—include leading scholars from modern culture and media studies, comparative literature and literary studies, art history, philosophy, cultural studies, and film studies.
Contributors. T. J. Clark, Howard Eiland, Peter Fenves, Tom Gunning, Michael Jennings, Claudia Brodsky Lacour, Kevin McLaughlin, Philip Rosen, Henry Sussman, Lindsay Waters, Samuel Weber, Peter Wollen

Excellent Writing Style.......2007-09-16
As a retired computer application trainer as well as a programming teacher, I find this book superior to MANY computer books of most ANY genre. Unfortunately many "techies" suffer from some deficits as writers.
First, though they may know their content very well, when they begin writing about their subject, they tend to skip steps that will confound a beginning learner or assume some nebulous prior knowledge or what must seem to them as perfectly "obvious" information or sequences. Mr. Finney doesn't make this all-to-often made error. He also follows the tried-and-true educational practice of - "Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them". It allows the reader to feel the scope as well as the details of what's being taught.
Second the writing style is very relaxed. The reader doesn't need to feel that they are learning in a large lecture hall. The style is person-to-person.
Third, He writes in English. That is to say, the writing is grammatical and well organized. That might seem like how things SHOULD be. I've found many technical writers simply don't - or can't do this! It seems to be well edited. Homonyms haven't snuck in because the words could pass by a spell checker. His early English teachers must have cracked his knuckles to develop this trait. (I keep wanting to write publishers to ask them if they would like me to do a final edit before they put their books on the street. It's embarassing to us as a culture. OK, I'll get off my soap-box.) This book is refreshing.
I got both volumes of Mr. Finney's books for my grown son, since he is interested in going into this field. I think he'll get them when I'm done. More than likely, I'll end up getting an addutional set for him. I want to keep these!
Keep up the good work, Ken!!
Very Good Book.......2007-08-24
I think the only thing this book does wrong is clarify it is not for noobs and that you should have read the first book to know what is really going on. This a great book for A. Mid Level Programmers or B. Very Persistent Beginners. :0) It's far better than the forum and helps you pinpoint what you need; else you wouldn't know what to look for.
If you have Torque, get this book
Not a Beginners Guide?.......2007-02-02
You will find the on-line documentation at Garage Games more helpful.
A beginners guide it is not. Code is too buggy.
A Torque reference? Not exactly. It tells you what tools you can use with the Torque engine but the Torque parts themselves are to buggy especially if you are new to programming.
The code very seldom works without tweaking. You better have programming knowledge if you want to tweak the bad code.
It is good as a general reference book for people who want to know what kind of tools to use for programming and what are some of the components for developing a game.
Can you go from start to finish and develop a working demo from the book or one of your own? Not unless you are an intermediate to advanced programmer.
where is my sttuf?.......2007-01-22
I did not receive the book. I would like to know what is happening.
Trial version software.......2006-04-02
Book explains the basic's about making programs such as games! BUT SOFTWARE INCLUDED WITH BOOK, is ONLY TRIAL VERSION OF 30 DAYS --UNLESS YOUR PRO! SOME of the game making tools you CAN'T access. BOOK STATES ALL IN ONE, BUT information isn't all in book!

Book Description
Although African American soldiers and sailors have fought in every U.S. war from the War of Independence to the War on Terrorism, their contributions are rarely and, at best, erratically recorded in encyclopedias of American military history. Most Americans would be hard-pressed to name even a few of the many heroic black servicemen, who have distinguished themselves in the annals of military history. While a public figure like Colin Fowell is well known, and many people are now aware of the black regiment depicted in the movie GLORY, few have heard of David Lamson, When he was close to sixty years old, this African American captain of a small local militia successfully routed British reinforcements near concord at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Even fewer know about the "buffalo soldiers" (as African American cavalry units were once called) who rescued Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders in the famous battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish American War. This book is teeming with essential information that has been overlooked in other references.
William Weir's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY is designed to provide long overdue recognition to the outstanding accomplishments of hundreds of African American servicemen. More than three hundred entries will not only delineate the achievements of individuals and military units, but will also highlight important, often forgotten battles, wars, legislation and policy, organizations and movements, and historical incidents.
Thoroughly researched and historically accurate, with numerous illustrations, this comprehensive and substantive reference work is written to be accessible, engaging, and informative for all readers.
Customer Reviews:
Long Overdue.......2004-12-10
I live out in the west where the Buffalo Soldiers (so called by the Indians because the tightly curled hair of the soldiers matched that of the buffalo). When I picked up the book I first looked for and found stories of the famed 24th Infantry Regiment, one of the black regiments founded right after the Civil War of mostly veterans and freed slaves.
From there I found myself fascinated by the stories of individual African Americans in military service. It is clear that the colored, then negro, then black, then African American soldiers have more than earned their place in the sun. I can only hope that this book shines that light.

Book Description
"When the Tree Flowered is John Neihardt's mature and reflective inter-pretation of the old Sioux way of life. He served as a translator of the Sioux past whose audience has proved not to be limited by space or time. Through his writings, Black Elk, Eagle Elk, and other old men who were of that last generation of Sioux to have participated in the old buffalo-hunting life and disorienting period of strife with the U.S. army found a literary voice. What they said chronicles a dramatic transition in the life of the Plains Indians; the record of their thoughts, interpreted by Neihardt, is a legacy preserved for the future. It transcends the specifics of this one tragic case of cultural misunderstanding and conflict and speaks to universal human concerns. It is a story worth contemplating both for itself and for the lessons it teaches all humanity."-Raymond J. DeMallie, editor of The Sixth Grandfather: Black Elk's Teachings Given to John G. Neihardt. "A warm and often moving piece of literature which can be appreciated for its literary value and for its insights into Sioux culture."-Richard N. Ellis, Rocky Mountain Social Science Journal. Soulfull Search.......2000-11-08
This book was recommended by my sister-in-law, who is 1/2 Lakota Sioux. I wanted to understand more about the culture, the language, the inner feelings of the Sioux. This depiction, from a Lakota who went through the changes from freedom to confinement in his formative years, was sobering. I happened to find a 1951 version at a library and am now ordering the updated version to keep. I will be reading it again. I cried when I realized what my ancestors had done.

When The Tree Flowered.......1999-12-12
Neihardt's best prose work, from material gathered at Pine Ridge Reservation in the forties from Eagle Elk and other Sioux Indians. It draws delightful pictures of Sioux life, weaves in charming Indian folk tales and legends, and describes an enlightened society where generosity was the way to status and young men chosen to hunt for the poor were honored. The gently humorous wisdom that pervades the culture comes to life.
"....for the Great Mysterious One meant all things to be round--the sky and prarie, the sun and moon, the bodies of men and animals, trees and the nests of birds, and the hoop of the people. The days and the seasons come back in a circle, and so do the generations. The young grow old, and from the old young begin and grow. It is the sacred way."
Book Description
Many people believe that during the Middle Ages Christianity was actively hostile toward science (then known as natural philosophy) and impeded its progress. This comprehensive survey of science and religion during the period between the lives of Aristotle and Copernicus demonstrates how this was not the case. Medieval theologians were not hostile to learning natural philosophy, but embraced it. Had they had not done so, the science that developed during the Scientific Revolution would not--and could not--have occurred. Students and lay readers will learn how the roots of much of the scientific culture of today originated with the religious thinkers of the Middle Ages. Science and Religion, 400 B.C. to A.D. 1550 thoroughly covers the relationship between science and religion in the medieval period, and provides many resources for the student or lay reader:
Discusses how the influx of Greek and Arabic science in the 12th and 13th centuries-- especially the works of Aristotle in logic and natural philosophy--dramatically changed how science was viewed in Western Europe.
Demonstrates how medieval universities and their teachers disseminated a positive attitude toward rational inquiry and made it possible for Western Europe to become oriented toward science.
Includes primary documents that allow the reader to see how important scholars of the period understood the relationship of science and religion.
Provides an annotated bibliography of the most important works on science and religion in the Middle Ages, helping students to study the topic in more detail. BL
