They had more in common than just a scream, whether they faced Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde, King Kong, the Wolf Man, or any of the other legendary Hollywood monsters. Some were even monsters themselves, such as Elsa Lanchester as the Bride, and Gloria Holden as Dracula’s Daughter. And while evading the Strangler of the Swamp, former Miss America Rosemary La Planche is allowed to rescue her leading man. This book provides details about the lives and careers of 21 of these cinematic leading ladies, femmes fatales, monsters, and misfits, putting into perspective their contributions to the films and folklore of Hollywood terror—and also the sexual harassment, exploitation, and genuine danger they faced on the job. Veteran actress Virginia Christine recalls Universal burying her alive in a backlot swamp in full “mummy” makeup for the resurrection scene in The Mummy’s Curse—and how the studio saved that scene for the last day in case she suffocated. Filled with anecdotes and recollections, many of the entries are based on original interviews, and there are numerous old photographs and movie stills.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT BOOK BY MANK.......2005-09-30

As in his brilliant Women in Horror Films of the 1930's, author Gregory William Mank provides 21 interviews with some of the women from classic horrors of the 1940's. And this book is nearly as outstanding as the 30's book. I say nearly only because the 1930's produced such pioneering classics of the genre like Frankenstein, King Kong, The Mummy, and Dracula, while in the 1940's, horror films had become almost exclusively "B" films. Mank has meticulously researched not only the films these actresses starred in, but their entire career, providing a filmography for each.

The Beautiful Evelyn Ankers is hailed as the top scream queen of the 1940's, starring in classics like "The Wolfman" and "Ghost of Frankenstein", and not so classics like "Son of Dracula", "The Mad Ghoul" and "Weird Woman." Lon Chaney Jr., always a bit of a gruff individual, delighted in scaring Evelyn when he was in full Jack Pierce Wolfman makeup.

Peggy Moran starred in only one horror, "The Mummy's Hand" which was the first, and best sequel to the 1932 classic. It's interesting to not that Moran actually met actor Tom Tyler, who played the mummy Kharis, out of his mummy makeup due to shooting schedules. Anne Gwynne is another interesting actress who did a number of horror films including "Black Friday", the 1941 "Black Cat" and "House of Frankenstein." Gwynne speaks fondly of "House of Frankenstein", particularly of her scenes with John Carradine who played Dracula. She felt it was one of her best performances.

One of my favorite actresses to read about was the sensuous Louise Albritton. Her most noted role was playing opposite Chaney Jr. in "Son of Dracula", and completely stealing the show. As the morbid southern Belle Kay Caldwell, she actually weds the count but plans on betraying him to live the life immortal with another man. It is Albritton that really carries this film as Chaney was terribly miscast.

While Albritton probably gets the nod for greatest Femme Fatale of the 1940's, the nod for single most chilling scene goes to Virginia Christine. Playing the reincarnated Princess Ananka in "The Mummy's Curse", she rises from the muck and mud of a bayou swamp, looking like a zombie out of a George Romero film. It's a very effective and well done scene.

Other women highlighted in the book include Elena Vedrugo, the beautiful gypsy girl from "House of Frankenstein"; Lenore Aubert from "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein", Simone Simon from Val Lewton's Classi "Cat People" and Jane Adams, who had this distinction of playing the only female hunchback in classic horror history in "House of Dracula".

The book is filled with many great photos from these films as well as many photos of the actresses today. They provide many amusing and informational anecdotes and this book is a must have for fans of classic horror.

The two volumes of WOMEN IN HORROR FILMS (1930s and 1940s) are a wonderful addition to the serious horror collection.

Both volumes are constantly referred to in my writing on the subject of the Golden Age of Horror.

Tops in research is Mr. Mank

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and well-written account of a bygone era........1999-08-23

Gregory William Mank, who earlier has profiled Lugosi and Karloff, turns his considerable writing skills and knowledge to the distaff side this time, profiling such disparate talents as Maria Ouspenskaya and Louise Currie. Mr. Mank manages to bring the reader back to the mad-cap days at Universal and RKO with an authoritative yet never dull narrative that is peppered with asides from his large cast. This marvellous book concludes with a survey among well-known authorities of the genre to nominate the decade's best performance by an actress/supporting actress in a horror film: Allow this reader to add his choise: Frances Dee as the gutsy "I" of "I Walk With a Zombie."

1 out of 5 stars More Than Nausea.......2003-05-20

This hodgepodge of anecdotes will undoubtedly prove fascinating to the legion of Carson worshippers, but for those who are somewhat less enamored of Carson, it will serve to confirm that most of Carson's guests were as stale, uninteresting, and boorish as the great Carson himself - this one is for rabid Carson groupies only.

3 out of 5 stars For Carson Fans.......2002-06-01

"More Than Laughter" gives an insider's look at how guests were lined up in the early days of The Tonight Show. The author, Sy Kasoff, was the Head Talent Coordinator, and later Associate Producer for the first four years of Johnny Carson's reign, starting in 1962.

Kasoff's book is a collection of anecdotes of booking various guests and what they were really like. Henny Youngman was a nice guy, Bob Hope did not have an entourage, Tommy Smothers worked without a net, Buddy Hackett was surprisingly professional, and so on. Along the way, there are enough stories and reactions of Carson and McMahon as to provide personal perspectives on these men the drier ones offered by other biographies out there.

Why the three star rating? First, the book needs the help of an editor, as some things we may say verbally just don't work in print as sentence fragments. Second, it is of most interest to Carson fans and less so to outsiders. While it is not a deep, analytical work, it is a pleasant light read, and I do recommend to Carson/Tonight Show fans.

3 out of 5 stars Good Idea But Some Slight Flaws.......2004-05-10

This older book delves into "hedge magicians" for the World of Darkness in general, not just Mage: the Ascension. Unfortunately, its nowhere near as good as the revised edition, but theres still some good info to be found here. The introduction makes a point of how "sorcerers" have been overlooked by "True" Mages, and also tries too hard to make distinctions. Basically, the introduction gives a look at what "hedge magic" is and why people practice it, as well as what its like to play as a seeker after occult knowledge (from the point of view of an Arcanum investigator). It then closes out look some "basic rules" (ie sorcerers aren't members of Crafts, they don't work True Magic, etc) which are basically artificial distinctions that few Mages pay attention to anyway.

The next chapter takes a look at Sorcerer societies. Five groups get full write-ups complete with histories, magical styles and connections to other supernaturals, including the high ritualists of the Ancient Order of Aeon Rites, the Balamob Mayan shaman, the Mormon mystics of the Nephite Priesthood, the Nigerian Uzoma priests and the new age Thal'hun. Minor groups like the Irish Fenian, Mogen ha Chav kabbalists, Dozen Priests of the Pythian Order and others also get brief mention. However, as good as the full write ups are, some of the things have now changed with the metaplot (ie, Balamob and Uzoma joining the Dreamspeakers, Nephites becoming Choristors and the Thal'hun disbanding and being reabsorbed into a new group called the Star Council).

The next chapter covers character creation, including a handful of new Traits, Archetypes and Backgrounds, as well as some appropriate Merits and Flaws. Some of the stuff is a bit overpowered though (immortality for instance), but most of it fits the mood and themes of the World of Darkness. Theres also a chart for converting "hedge magic" into Disciplines, Arcanoi or Spheres (for sorcerers who die, Awaken or are Embraced). Its an okay system, but again slightly unbalanced. Following this is an entire chapter on "hedge magic" covering casting, systems and common foci and styles. Theres also over a dozen Paths (and associated rituals), magical effects such as shapeshifting, divination, speaking with spirits, alchemy, healing, controlling elements, making magical items and so forth. Unfortunately, the Paths aren't always well defined.

Theres also a chapter of templates, like the shapeshifting hitchhiker, antiquarian, street prophet and secret agent/witch. Nothing interesting, but it seems like all of the sorcerers in this chapter are not members of any of the above described groups. The appendix includes sorcerers of note, like Cagliostro, the wandering African Uzoma thief Taneela Rangi Ya Fedha and the disturbingly mysterious "Gretchen", as well as some cool magical items like the love poppet, vision skull and a demonic mask. In addition to a character sheet, theres also a decent bibliography and list of websites. Overall, this is a good book, especially if you want information on things like the Balamob, Nephites or Uzoma. Otherwise, just save your money and buy Sorcerer revised. You get more up-to-date systems and mechanics (including way more paths), plus it meshes up better with the current setting.

          4 out of 5 stars A Decent Mage companion.......2002-07-21

Despite the complaints of some of the other reviewers, the Mage system is not complex - it is only slightly more difficult than anything else. However, as far as WoD: Sorcerer goes, not every spellcaster in the WOD can act as a Mage - that is, not everyone can bend reality at a whim. The Sorcerer book discusses the rigid paths of magic studied by mortals. While it does not take into account new canon (see Sorcerer:Revised), it's systems are more simplified than the new Sorcerer book, and in addition, lists a /great/ deal of Rituals. Anyone that wishes to run a game based around dark and gritty magic (something to the effect of Call of Cthulu magic), ought to pick up this book. /Don't/ buy this book just because "Mage hurt my wittle head".

4 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2000-06-17

WoD: Sorcerer is a great book, detailing a system for"hedge wizards," IE, sorcerers you don't have to break yourneck reading the Mage book to understand. The seven or eight Sorcerer lineages bring all kinds of fresh occult material to a World of Darkness where you thought you'd seen everything (just because you know what vampires, werewolves, and wraiths are). With juicy descriptions and a bunch of "hedge paths," of magic, WoD Sorcerer brings much-needed mystery and diversity to any WoD game. It has rules for awakening or being embraced *after* sorcerous study, too, so if you really want to complicate your Vampire or Mage chronicle from the start, this is your book.

5 out of 5 stars A true to life (sort of) Supplement.......1999-12-19

I am of an alternative religion, and have always striven to bring my characters to be as close to my true self as possible, and this book lets me turn my self into a realistic, playable character. As has been said, they don't have the overpower complex magic of Mage, but do have an edge over other mortals. In the end, if you want to play a mortal with a chance of survival, this is one of the best books for it!

          5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......1999-09-17

Hedge Magic was much a better idea for magic than true magick. It was a lot simpler to understand and a much better new type of magic

5 out of 5 stars Nicholas Rodgers Review Is for the Wrong Book.......2006-08-20

The book that Nicholas purchased is a training manual for WEB I version 6.5. It is a Power Point presentation that is designed to self-train or to train others. It comes with the presentation on the CD so it can be presented through a projector.

This book (ISBN: 0972263616) is a textbook designed to be used as a reference (as it has many examples) or to teach oneself how to use Business Objects 6.5. I assure you that there is no Power Point presentation with this book.

The WEB Intelligence XI training manual will be available in about a month. It is a very good book to train yourself or to train others. It will also have a CD with the Power Point presentation, so that it can be presented through a projector.

1 out of 5 stars This is a Powerpoint presentation printed and bound........2006-08-14

This book looks like someone made a really long power point presentation and printed it out and had it made into a book. It could probably be useful for a teacher, but for a student it's not very useful. In addition, you must have full access to the businessobjects software in order to use the examples. In addition, this book has absolutely no coverage of the XI R2 web/java interface whatsoever.

          4 out of 5 stars A keeper.......2006-08-14

As a person that went from an occasional BusinessObjects user to a power user I found this reference book to be concise, well organized and with very good illustrations. Thanks to this book I was able to flatten the learning curve and create professional reports and assist other users in a vey short amount of time.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Business Objects Training & Reference Tool!.......2004-05-03

I've been following Robert Schmidt's books since Business Objects version 4.1, and he continues to impress. Business Objects is a very powerful query tool, but putting the information in a formatted, concise report can prove difficult. Robert Schmidt does a fantastic job of walking a user through the different types of reports, while giving helpful hints (and warnings about potential pitfalls) along the way.

In addition, this book has an excellent section on using formulas and variables. The author does a superb job explaining context operators, and how to use them to display the data at an appropriate level of detail. Report developers seem to struggle most with this concept, but Robert Schmidt does a very good job of breaking down contexts and making them easier to understand.

I've attended official Business Objects training sessions, and none have come close to providing the level of information available in this book. At 550+ pages, this book is really a complete reference for creating Business Objects Reports. Best of all, this book represents an outstanding value - 10X the information of official Business Objects training at roughly 1/10th the cost!

I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who develops or uses Business Objects reports!

5 out of 5 stars Best text to learn Business Objects Ver. 5 or 6.......2004-04-29

Business Objects is a powerful, yet sometimes perplexing tool. Many of the nuances and very powerful features are just not covered in training or the vendor manuals.

In this text, Robert Schmidt creates a truly useful tool to learn the product, for novice to advanced. His first book was very good, but this one is spectacular - it covers not only what you really need to know to be effective with Business Obejcts, but also the important differences in the latest version of the product (v6). Most major releases to products require investing time in a certain amount of "re-learning" the tool; this book hits the right points for understanding what is really important. I've been using the products for over 6 years, and this is "hands-down" the best and most comprehensive text I've seen, yet it does not give up readability for use by people new to the product.

Great job on this book - I don't even blink at the price when I look at the often minimal return on classroom training costing hundreds more. Why buy a lousy book for $50 or more? I've sent people to training for years with less return on the investment. Step-by-step examples are in every chapter, each has a logical theme, and where v6 has changed, he notes the change and gives some insight in what it means to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing spectacular but most informative.......2006-05-17

This little book provides the reader with a basic history of the Powatan starting with a bit prior to first contact with europeans (ironicly the Spanish) to Jamestown (proving ample insights into the minds of the cultures involved) to the modern age, including their experiences of the racial Jim Crow nonsence of the South. Nothing spectacular just the bare and basic facts. I did find the comparison of how the Powatans fared in comparison to the Tribes of New England most impressive.

Most informative and filling for the mind.

A good book to have for those interested in the region, or just the story of Jamestown and the beginning of America.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Look at the "Forgotten Indians" of the East.......2004-01-05

As the previous reviewer said, this book does a wonderful job examing the history of the Powhatana Confederation of Virgina through the past four centuries. Often forgotten about by the American public at large the Powhatans (actually several different Algonquian speaking Nations joined together into a single Confederacy) played a major role in US history almost from the beginning. Indeed, as the title suggests, Pocahontas herself was one of their most well known members.

Starting with an examination of pre-contact Powhatan life and culture, Rountree goes on to examine the first meetings between the Chickahominies and the Spanish conquistadors, early encounters with the British settlers, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and Indian removal. Especially interesting are the last couple chapters which focus on Indian rights activism in the last century. The Powhatan (like any of the other First Nations) never went away and have had to struggle to gain their own reservation, and even federal recognition. The book ends with a wonderfully long and detailed bibliography.

This book really tells of their struggles and triumphs, and more than anything else I would say that this book gives a wonderful background for understanding where the peoples of the Powhatan Confederation have come from. Anyone with an interest in Native American studies should definately check out this book and the others in the Civilization of the American Indians series.

5 out of 5 stars The Powhatan and English Cultural Differences.......2001-12-13

Being a descendant of the Wicocomico Indian Tribe, a chiefdom of the Powhatan Empire and a 7th great grandson of King William Taptico of the above tribe; Ms Rountree's book took me on a trip back into time and verified much of my previous research into my Native American Heritage.

This was a well written book on a subject that has been neglected for years. It discusses the terrible clash between Colonial America and the Powhatan Empire; a period that set the tone for the treatment of Native Americans in America for years to come and continues today. Considering the poor records that Colonial America maintained, Ms Rountree did an exceptional job in uncovering long lost information and at last brought to light the treatment the Powhatans received at the hands of Colonial America. The period of 1607 thru 1775 was the Powhatans "Wounded Knee". Ms Rountree did an excellent job in bringing to light much of the injustices done to the Powhatans.

For the Powhatan Empire researcher, this is a book that should be on your shelf.

I am a Geologist and recently visited Grand Canyon National Park and hiked to Phantom Ranch. I did not buy this book as a field guide but as an educational tool. It is written in easy to understand format and parallels the educational level of PBS or the Discovery Channel. I suggest everyone who visits Grand Canyon NP add this book to their library. For detailed geology there are more advanced books or you can visit the Grand Canyon Association web page.

            5 out of 5 stars A concise and well-illustrated overview.......2003-10-28

As can be seen from the previous reviews, whether one finds this book helpful really depends on what one is looking for. This is an excellent basic introduction to the geology of the Grand Canyon, with a preliminary background summary that places it in the context of plate tectonics, the movement of the North American continent northward from the equator through the Paleozoic Era, and the other major geologic forces that provided a backdrop for the deposition of the layers of sandstone, limestone and shale that we see today. Among its strong features are the imaginative illustrations that show the depositional environments through the geologic periods in which the various rock formations were laid down. The illustrations provide strong visual associations for learning the rock layers (Kaibab Formation, Coconino Sandstone, Redwall Limestone, etc.) that comprise the Grand Canyon. This isn't an advanced textbook, however, and someone looking for that would likely be disappointed. That doesn't mean that it's strictly for beginners, though. Even someone with a good background in Grand Canyon geology would appreciate the way this book ties everything together in a coherent and well-illustrated overview.

1 out of 5 stars There are better books.......2003-07-16

This book is not really that great. It is small and incomplete, the wrong size for taking into the field, and it doesn't hold up well(spine breaks and pages fall out). You are MUCH better off using an Audubon or Peterson guide. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Take it to the Grand Canyon with you.......2003-07-05

In addition to its beauty, the Grand Canyon offers a snapshot of earth's history in one place. This slim, concise, well-illustrated book is a great introduction to the formation and geological history of the Grand Canyon. It is short enough to read while you are at the canyon, or on the trip there. The writing is lucid, and no geology background is needed.
