The Kennedy Obsession
John Hellmann Manufacturer: Columbia University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0231107986 |
Book Description
-- Gary Owens, Canadian Review of American Studies
John F. Kennedy was not only a president, but also a symbol for America's most cherished ideas. In The Kennedy Obsession, John Hellmann takes a thoroughly original approach to understanding Kennedy's star power and his carefully crafted public image. Tracing Kennedy's self-creation as diligent scholar, bashful hero, and sensitive rebel-cued by cultural figures such as Lord Byron, Ernest Hemingway, and Cary Grant-and the images of Kennedy in the aftermath of his assassination, Hellmann reveals the painstaking transformation of private life into public persona, of a man into perhaps the major American myth of our time.

Oswald's Backyard (Oswald's Backyard)
Leslie Bramm Manufacturer: JAC Publishing & Promotions ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1933159057 |
Product Description
In his backyard, Leo Oscar is the United States of America. Naïve, petulant and ultimately violent. Leo is at the center of our national obsessionthe search for identity. He battles between idealism and a desire for fame. The television, the media, is his ultimate confirmation. The play is set in New Orleans, September of 1963, in and out of Leo Oscars mind. He has managed to create a political commotion around himself that lands him a shot on a local TV talk show. It is the day the show airs, and it has become Leos passionhis big break. However, Leos story is complicated by a television that wont work, the arrival of some unexpected house guests, and the return of an old friend. Leo is frustrated and humiliated until it is inevitable that he lashes out. While the events in this play may closely resemble the real life Lee Harvey Oswald, this is fiction. The play does not address or rebut any particular conspiracy, but instead explores the psychological landscape of a young American man, driven to extremely desperate actions.

Book Description
This volume brings together the work of twenty scholars who have tried to examine the nature of the encounter between Europeans and the other peoples of the world from roughly 1450 to 1800, the Early Modern era. This volume is world-wide in scope but is unified by the central underlying theme that implicit understandings influence every culture's ideas about itself and others. These understandings, however, are changed by experience in a constantly shifting process in which both sides participate, and that makes such encounters complex historical events and moments of discovery.

How the Laser Happened: Adventures of a Scientist
Charles H. Townes Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195153766 |
Book Description
In How the Laser Happened, Nobel laureate Charles Townes provides a highly personal look at some of the leading events in twentieth-century physics. Townes was inventor of the maser, of which the laser is one example; an originator of spectroscopy using microwaves; and a pioneer in the study of gas clouds in galaxies and around stars. Throughout his career he has also been deeply engaged with issues outside of academic research. He worked on applied research projects for Bell Labs; served on the board of directors for General Motors; and devoted extensive effort to advising the government on science, policy, and defense. This memoir traces his multifaceted career from its beginnings on the family farm in South Carolina. Spanning decades of ground-breaking research, the book provides a hands-on description of how working scientists and inventors get their ideas. It also gives a behind-the-scenes look at the scientific community, showing how scientists respond to new ideas and how they approach a variety of issues, from priority and patents to the social and political implications of their work. In addition, Townes touches on the sociology of science, uncovering some of the traditions and values that are invisible to an outsider. A towering and energetic figure, Townes has explored or pioneered most of the roles available to the modern scientist. In addition to fundamental research, he was actively involved in the practical uses of the laser and in the court cases to defend the patent rights. He was a founding member of the Jasons, an influential group of scientists that independently advises the government on defense policy, and he played an active part in scientific decisions and policies from the Truman through the Reagan administration. This lively memoir, packed with first-hand accounts and historical anecdotes, is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of science and an inspiring example for students considering scientific careers.Customer Reviews:
