          Book Description

Born in South Carolina, White spent his childhood as a "lead boy" for traveling blind bluesmen. In the early '30s he moved to New York and became a popular blues star, then introduced folk-blues to a mass white audience in the 1940s. He was famed both for his strong Civil Rights songs, which made him a favorite of the Roosevelts, and for his sexy stage persona. The king of Café Society-also home to Billie Holiday--he was the one bluesman to consistently pack the New York nightspots, and the first black singer-guitarist to act in Hollywood films and star on Broadway.
In the 1950s, White's bitter compromise with the blacklisters left him with few friends on either end of the political spectrum. He spent much of the decade in Europe, then came back strong in the 1960s folk revival. By 1963, he was voted one of America's top three male folk stars, but his health was failing and he did not survive the decade.
Written in an engaging style, Society Blues portrays the difficult balancing act that all black performers must face in a predominantly white culture. Through the twists and turns of White's life, it traces the evolution of the blues and folk revival, and is a must read for anyone interested in the history of American popular culture, as well as a fascinating life story.

It's a shame that so little is made of Josh White these days. He was a seminal figure in the early folk boom, an accomplished Piedmont style bluesman, and one of the most popular folk artists of his time. In his early days he backed Leroy Carr and recorded some fine blues. Later he fell in with the New York folk scene recording for Moe Asch. During this period he recorded with the Almanac Singers, Leadbelly and the Union Boys. His later Electra records were part of most folk enthusiasts collections. Elijah Wald did a great service in writing this book, shedding much needed light on a vital but overlooked career.

3 out of 5 stars Hoping for a bit more........2007-08-23

Although this is a good book with valuable information, I think it is a bit vague and short. A good idea is to get 3 different books on their respective topics. Nessus and snort have nothing to do with eachother and snort is more powerful than Ethereal. Its work buying if you have the money and has some decent tips and tricks.

                  5 out of 5 stars MOST EXCELLENT!!.......2006-05-24

Are you a network security administrator who has Nessus, Snort and Ethereal up and running? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Brian Caswell, Gilbert Ramirez, Jay Beale and Noam Rathaus, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you how to customize, code and torque Nessus, Snort and Ethereal to their fullest potential.

Caswell, Ramirez, Beale and Rathaus, begin by covering the inner workings of NASL. Then, the authors shows you how to debug NASLs. They continue by showing you how to use extensions and custom tests. Next, the authors cover Nessus' include files implementation of the SMB protocol, followed by Nessus' include files implementation of Windows-related hotfix and service pack verification. Then, they underline the steps that must be taken so that Nessus can incorporate support for NTLM. They also present several tools to automate and simplify plugin creation. Then, they help readers understand Snort code. The authors continue by showing you how to write your own custom Snort rules. They also show you how to navigate the Snort source tree. Next, the authors show you how to modify the Snort source code to solve an otherwise difficult task. Then, they show you how to enable Ethereal to read from new data sources. They continue by showing you how to program your own protocol dissector, either linked into Ethereal or as a plugin. Finally, the authors show you how to take advantage of Ethereal's that open source programmers have created for collection of dissectors.

The authors of this most excellent book provide the inside scoop on coding the most effective and efficient Snort rules. More importantly, after reading this book, you will be a master at coding your own tools to detect malicious traffic.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of Jay Beale's Open Source Security Series.......2006-03-16

I've read and reviewed the three previous books in Jay Beale's Open Source Security Series -- Snort 2.1, Nessus Network Auditing, and Ethereal Packet Sniffing. I liked all three of those books, and I'm glad to say that this fourth book -- Nessus, Snort, and Ethereal Power Tools (NSAEPT), is a worthy continuation of Jay's series. NSAEPT is a unique resource for anyone who wants to extend Nessus, Snort, and Ethereal. The book could save programmers hours of work, and it should be the first step for those looking to contribute to the development of all three projects.

It's unfortunate that an uninformed three star review has been the only commentary on NSAEPT until now. Of course the book is not for beginners! Why write another introductory book, when the three earlier titles serve that role (and more)? NSAEPT is strong precisely because it starts where the other three books end.

I learned quite a bit reading NSAEPT. For example, Part I shared advice on using Nessus to audit hosts directly, by examining Windows registry keys, package databases, or Windows PE files (.exe, .dll) directly. I appreciated the discussion of creating NASL checks that were more protocol-aware (for MySQL) or that could speak NTLM authentication to IIS Web servers. Ch 6 even gave tips on building NASL generators.

Part II, covering Snort, gave better advice on writing Snort rules than what was found in the earlier Snort 2.1 book. I thought this part was the weakest of the three, however. I would have liked to have seen many more examples of using advanced Snort rule options. Table 8.10 should have said that the + flag means "match on the specified flags, and allow any other flags." Also, I thought the author miscommunicated the purpose of the stream4 preprocessor when he mentioned dropping UDP and ICMP traffic. That's an issue when running inline, not passively as most people use Snort.

I really liked Part III, which examined Ethereal. Ch 11 offered great guidance on reverse engineering an unknown trace format, namely iptrace from AIX 3. Ch 12 mentioned an undocumented tethereal flag (-G) that was new to me. I enjoyed learning about tap modules in Ch 13, and I did not know that Ethereal uses the wiretap library to read traces -- not libpcap.

I subtracted one star from my review for a few reasons. First, NSAEPT features some really annoying formatting problems in many of the code listings. Every place the characters "FI" (any case) appear, they are changed into a single nonsensical character. I stopped counting the number of times this happened. For example, where one should read "Filename", we see instead "Xlename". The same seems to have happened with "FL"; e.g., "Flags" becomes "Xags". The reference to libpcap and "Chapter 1" on p 159 should instead point to Ch 11. I thought the inclusion of material from Brian Wotring's Host Integrity Monitoring book as Appendix A was unnecessary. Brian's book is great, but I don't think readers need 30 pages from another title. Is that just padding?

Format-wise, NSAEPT features smaller fonts than one sees in more recent Syngress books. I thought the font was a little small, but in some ways an improvement over the jumbo text seen elsewhere. I also thought the paper used to print NSAEPT was much better than other titles. Compare NSAEPT with another 440 page Syngress book, Securing IM and P2P Applications for the Enterprise, and you'll see the latter book is much thicker.

Overall I recommend NSAEPT to anyone who wishes to do more with Nessus, Snort, or Ethereal. NSAEPT is definitely a book for power users and developers. It's great to see a new book that starts with original material and avoids rehashing what's already been written.

3 out of 5 stars Not for newbies.......2005-10-21

Very in-depth, however, not for someone who is just starting out on Snort, Nessus, or Ethereal. New to Snort, Nessus, or Ethereal - Buy something else. Expert on Snort, Nessus, or Ethereal already? - good book.

I have read most of the books published on the subject of Elite or Special Forces in the last twenty years and I have never been so impressed by a book by a new author to me. Richard Bennett seems to be prepared to rattle more than a few cages and question much that has been previously accepted as holy!

                  A Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Upsetting the official applecart.......2003-08-11

'Elite' Forces is a breakthrough and will be thoroughly hated by all those who wish to prolong the many myths surrounding Special Forces. Bennett is kind to those who really deserve the title and scathing about the rest. He has obviously upset the applecart of both the authorities and all those 'authors' who believe their version of publicly available facts are the only truth. Bennett has done a fine job in sifting through the available literature and largely sorting the wheat from the chaff. Those authors whose material he seems to believe is correct he accepts at face value, however an awful lot of the rest the is simply discarded. This is by far the best compendium on the ELITE FORCES ever assembled. It might annoy and will undoubtedly infuriate many established so-called experts, but in the end the truth is paramount and those that complain most about Bennett's views are probably those with the weakest case. Get this book and be prepared to have your eyes opened to the truth. Ten out of ten for me.

                  1 out of 5 stars Bad Review.......2003-04-08

The author credits a couple of websites in his references section but does not mention that the majority of his work was lifted from these sites verbatim without permission. Some decent material, but you can get it for free with a simple web search.

His original material is fraught with errors and slanted viewpoints and reflects the knowledge of one not familiar with Elite Forces in more than a cursory manor.

                    Book Description

All along the Mississippi--on country plantation landings, urban levees and quays, and the decks of steamboats--nineteenth-century African Americans worked and fought for their liberty amid the slave trade and the growth of the cotton South. Offering a counternarrative to Twain's well-known tale from the perspective of the pilothouse, Thomas C. Buchanan paints a more complete picture of the Mississippi, documenting the rich variety of experiences among slaves and free blacks who lived and worked on the lower decks and along the river during slavery, through the Civil War, and into emancipation.

Buchanan explores the creative efforts of steamboat workers to link riverside African American communities in the North and South. The networks African Americans created allowed them to keep in touch with family members, help slaves escape, transfer stolen goods, and provide forms of income that were important to the survival of their communities. The author also details the struggles that took place within the steamboat work culture. Although the realities of white supremacy were still potent on the river, Buchanan shows how slaves, free blacks, and postemancipation freedpeople fought for better wages and treatment.

By exploring the complex relationship between slavery and freedom, Buchanan sheds new light on the ways African Americans resisted slavery and developed a vibrant culture and economy up and down America's greatest river.

                    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2007-04-20

Having grown up back in a day when we were taught Antebellum life was a monolithic experience for African Americans, books like this - opening an entirely new door on that era - always fascinate me even though by now, I know better. For example, who knew that some slaves hired themselves out on steamboats for a few weeks or months with no intention of escaping, but simply as respite from the hardships of plantation life?

The title is obviously a play on Mark Twain's nostalgic memoir. Though Buchanan does find some similarities between Twain's liberating experience of the Great River and the opportunities afforded African Americans by the western rivers - for example, mind broadening mobility, communication networks, accumulation of assets by both slave and free persons through labor or trade, and of course, escape routes for fugitives - he notes the dark side absent from steamboat nostalgia is the fact that the horrible "Second Middle Passage" broke up families and transported thousands of slaves in deplorable conditions into the Deep South.

Whether exploring the lives and culture of steamboat workers, free black travelers, abolitionists or scoundrels, the author draws upon the experiences and observations of many individuals through a variety of primary and secondary sources (including slave narratives and travel accounts) demonstrating how multifarious and uncategorizable the experiences of these men and women were. Even many of the laws and customs attempting to control black movement were circumvented in this fluid economy.

Buchanan's writing is concise, and his narrative flows smoothly. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in maritime history as well as those interested in African American Studies.

5 out of 5 stars Important contribution to the study of black antebellum life.......2005-04-18

Thomas Buchanan follows David Cecelski's study of North Carolina's black maritime sailors with this excellent study of black steamboat workers on the Mississippi. Buchanan describes the culture in which the free black and enslaved steamboat crewmen lived, their importance to the southern antebellum economy, as well as, their impact on the institution of slavery. It is in this area that Buchanan an important contribution to our understanding of African American resistance to slavery.

John Hope Franklin and Loren Schweninger's book on runaway slaves is the most extensive treatments of the subject. Unfortunately, they give short shrift to the importance of the Mississippi River and the steamboat trade as a means of escaping slavery. Buchanan corrects this omission by arguing that African Americans, both free and slave, were a vital part of the steamboat industry's labor force. Runaway slaves from throughout the South often made their escape by blending in with other black steamboat workers and riding steamboats out of slavery. Although aware of the problem, and although numerous measures were enacted to stop it, Southerners were never able to completely stop the flow of slaves escaping by riverboat.

In addition to this book, Buchanan has written two articles on this subject. I recommend all them to anyone interested in the study of African American antebellum life.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating read.......2004-12-12

Buchanan weaves the compelling narratives of slave, free black, and white workers and passengers on Mississippi steamboats with extensive archival information.

He shows how the river network and steamboat work allowed them to craft multiple ways to resist slavery, poor labor conditions, and the separation of families.

This is a history book with broad appeal to non-historians as well.

                              Product Description

No one really knows where nanotechnology is leading, what its pursuit will mean, and how it may affect human and other forms of life. Nevertheless, its research and development are moving briskly into that unknown. It has been suggested that rapid movement towards 'who knows where' is endemic to all technological development; that its researchers pursue it for curiosity and enjoyment, without knowing the consequences, believing that their efforts will be beneficial. Further, that the enthusiasm for development comes with no malicious intent but rather from simple ignorance. Contrary to that commonly held perception about the collective pursuit of technological development, there are individual research scientists and engineers who are quite willing to reflect on the meaning of their work in nanotechnology. Nanotalk is a book of conversations and explorations with thirty five such nano-research scientists and engineers who share their ideas, experiences, perceptions, and beliefs about their work, humanity, nature, change, and the future of the world with nanotechnology. Precisely because of the unknowable nature of nanotechnology research and development, conscientious foresight and ethical reflection are warranted every step of the way. Not only do nanotechnology research and development represent enormous financial commitments, but they also require a profound leap of faith regarding its possible outcomes. Using these conversations as the basis of reflection and deliberation, the author explores the possible significance of nanotechnology to humanity and how it might be pursued conscientiously and ethically.
