You don't even have to like the normal pokemon to like this book! If you like cute stuff, then this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Magical Pokemon Journey 3.......2003-05-05

This comic book is so cute. It is great for younger kids between the ages 10-12. There is some gross mushy stuff in it that I could have done with out but other than that it is wonderful

3 out of 5 stars BEST POKE COMIC EVER!!.......2002-04-14

Hazel, a ditzy-lovesick kinda gal, is in love with the handsome skilled Pokemon Trainer Almond... He would actually BE skilled if Hazel would let him catch any Pokemon.
So basically Almond hates Hazel for not letting him catch any Poke's.
But then Grandpa, an old man, tells Hazel that if she catches Pokemon for him he'll prepare a Love Potion for Almond.
So Hazel tries to catch Pokemon (Although she didn't catch many) to win the Love Potion and Almond's heart! But many other characters soon appear making Hazel's quest easier/harder than ever! HILARIOUS COMIC!!!!!!!! READ IT EVERYONE!!

But this issue is bad comparing to the others really.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-11-21

In this book, there are 6 'chapters' plus 2 bonus stories and 2 bonus bounuses.

What happens in the 6 chapters is that a new character, Walnut, appears, and he's a ninja. Then, Almond wants to record the daily life of Jigglypuff in a journal, with disastrous results. Also, Hazel celebrates the anniversary of when she first met Pikachu (kind of like in the third short movie ^_^). Hazel and co. also celebrate their second Christmas. And then, they go on a potato hunt, to find the pink potato! (But then, I can't exactly remember the order of all these stories.... ^^;;)

In the bonus stories, Hazel tries to find her lost picture of Almond, and a Psyduck is asking a lot of weird questions (like why carrots are orange).

In the bonus bonuses, Yumi Tsukirino (the author and artist of this lovely manga) tells how she played 'Hey You, Pikachu!'. And she also retells traditional Japanese folktales using the characters of MPJ. ^_^

All in all, if you're a big fan of Pokemon, and love cute things, then this series is a must buy for you. And this graphic novel is no exception. ^_^

    1 out of 5 stars Intelligent??.......2006-04-25

That anyone can read this book and conclude that it is an intelligent presentation is, well, not very analytical. This book is about as deep as a thimble flattened by a steam roller. Save your money, don't throw it away. I wish that more evangelical Christians were using their education to write thoroughly researched books without borrowing from others like C.S. Lewis (who was not an evangelical). Giles is not original, but then neither is Rick Warren in his "Purpose Driven Life" (he just borrows from tried and true psychology and mixes Bible verses in with it). So I wonder, "Who is reading this stuff?" Maybe some of the kids (the ones who are doing any reading at all), or some who put Harry Pothead down for a minute to read something else?? The church has gone a long way in my lifetime and it looks like it's just about to jump off the intellectual cliff!

1 out of 5 stars What else is...new?.......2006-04-18

First it was Michael Savage, then Laura Ingraham, then...or was it Laura then Michael along with everyone else? What I mean is that Giles churns out a book that says everything that other conservative popular radio hosts and writers have already said, but says it with no persuasion whatsoever. I am much more engaged with a Limbaugh, or with a Laura (when she doesn't stammer when reading something), than by Giles. Virtually all of the liberal nutty ideas are once again given to us in a rush job. The book reminds me of a high school term paper, filled with hysteria which clearly affects pellucid argumentation. Give me a a good argument without hype and name-calling. Thank god the conservative movement has the Buckleys, Kudlows, Hansons, Kolakowskis, et al. Save your money and invest it in writers who, over time, will have real cultural and intellectual impact.

5 out of 5 stars Lasering the Liberal Left.......2004-09-27

Doug Giles turns his pen into a laser as he identifies and analyzes the Liberal attack on all aspects of our society. He shows how every sector of American life -- politics, culture and church -- is under attack, as the Left seeks to change us from a nation of independent-minded, God-fearing individualists to collectivized, entitlement-demianding atheists.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2004-09-23

This book is an incredible jab to the gut of the best that the liberal left has to offer against Christianity, Culture, and the political rhelm. Giles is a master of satire while maintaining an strong and intelligent voice in the political debate. I highly recommend this book!

1 out of 5 stars Self-Promoting Bambi Lake is more accurate.......2007-06-18

This book is pure fantasy. I do not know anything about the original Cockettes, but have met quite a few of Ms. Lakes "friends" and associates from the late 80's/early 90's San Francisco "End Up" (a bar)/ "Popstitutes" (performance group) crowd of people that were loosely affiliated with each other. She had a reputation with these people (Im not naming names here...) for making things up and generally causing a commotion for no reason, as well as being extremely moody, unpredictable and unstable. The book itself is a series of vignettes told in the first person, ostensibly to impress and amaze the reader with the fabulosity of its author. Obviously, I am neither impressed nor amazed. Except for the actual subject matter, it reads like a series of tall tales told by a reasonably intelligent 6th grader. If you are interested in purchasing a fictional book about the adventures of a truly interesting transgender female, I earnestly suggest "Sick Burn Cut" by Deran LUDD. It has a lot more depth and complexity to it than Ms. Lake's self-promoting fantasy life.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and slighlty delusional.........2007-03-08

book by legendary SF Trannie Bambi Lake - she wrote some great songs, the best being "Charlotte Rampling" which was later covered by Kiki and Herb (Justin Bond & Kenny Mellman) in their stage show...

5 out of 5 stars Smart, enjoyable, and truthful (I don't know about factual).......2004-05-05

I became curious about Bambi Lake after hearing Justin Bond sing several of her songs in NYC. She's a marvelous songwriter. The book was great--really evoked a particular time and energy that just doesn't exist right now in queer life. The book is witty and fabulous--also touching and smart. I can't attest to the factual basis of all her stories, but they certainly ring true in the larger sense. The book was money well-spent.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous........2002-05-25

Loved it. Best of all is Bambi's own story, which is compelling. A must-read for anyone with gender confusion!

      5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down..........2001-11-01

An engaging narrative that makes it difficult for the reader to put down. The fantastic quality of this book is not just the history and the story..but how much the author's voice, wit, wisdome and beauty, comes across..loud and clear..it is like having a 200 page conversation with Bambi in your boudoire..telling you all about the glam, the glitz, dish, and the juice of her fabulous life.
Ultimately, it is a book that shows how to be true to oneself with dignity and a sense of humor.- in other words Unsinkable to circumstance and time.....a la the Unsinkable Ms Lake...

5 out of 5 stars True Gems of Programming Wisdom.......2005-03-28

Intended for the intermediate to advanced game programmer, this is a book that will literally have something for everyone. It contains sixty-two 'gems' that is, articles on how to some particular aspect of game programming. Sophisticated game programming is probably the most complex programming there is. And this book goes into some pretty sophisticated programming details. It is written by a collection of the best in the business today.

                    For instance:

3.1 - Ten Fingers of Deaty: Algorithms for Combat Killing
                    5.11 - Heat and Haze Post-Processing Effects
                    7.2 - A Simple Real-Time Lip-Synching System

There is no question that the main driving force for faster computers is to make for more realistic gaming. And the faster computers allow more sophisticated programming to be done to make the grass wave realistically.

This is probably not a book you're going to sit down and read from cover to cover. You'll probably scan through and read the ones that are applicable to just what you need to do next. But then in a couple of weeks, in a couple of months....

                    5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" compendium.......2004-07-09

Featuring contributions from expert, professional game developers, Game Programming Gems 4 is an in-depth and recommended reference and resource filled cover to cover with essays, each covering everything from general programming and debugging to mathematics, physics, aritifical intelligence issues, graphics, network and multiplayer concerns, audio, and so much more. Game Programming Gems 4 is not a standard instructional textbook; rather, it is a supplementary guide packed with the latest cutting-edge insights to creating quality games - most code is written in C++, but some Java and Python are also represented. A "must-have" compendium of insight, discoveries, tips, tricks, and techniques for every serious game programmer's library. An accompanying Windows CD-ROM contains source code, listings, and demos to complement the articles and essays.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource to add to your collection.......2004-06-26

This book contains a lot of really useful tidbits that are helpful to anyone in the game programming or simulation fields. It should be on everyones shelf as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but overpriced.......2004-05-25

The original games gems was a really good book, but I found Game Gems 2 and 3 to be less cutting edge and common knowledge topics. Games Gems 4 is back to covering cutting edge ideas and topics.

Games Gems is kind of like a recipe book with all kinds of little coding ideas/tricks. I will say that some of them I have not seen anywhere else. I was most impressed with the articles about shadows. My biggest complaint other than price is that I would have like to see more of the articles have both OpenGL and DirectX source code. This book is geared toward intermediate to advanced level programmers. The retail price of $70.00 is really high for a book even if it is a hardcover.

4 out of 5 stars Good addition to the series.......2004-05-21

The latest in this series of highly successful books delivers 60 new articles covering diverse game development topics. Once again, the articles are written by an impressive group of people that collectively represent a substantial amount of game industry experience. The writing style and editing is very good, as usual, with a professional but casual tone, making the articles easy to read.

Although all of the topics are relevant to game development, because they are typically very narrow in scope, your mileage will vary depending on what exactly you're working on. This is true for the entire series. It's likely that you won't be reading the book cover to cover, but rather a handful of chapters here and there as you need them. This fourth volume is particularly useful in that respect because it includes a comprehensive index of the first 4 volumes

Another noteworthy change is the addition of a physics section. Given how important physics has become in game development, this is a welcome addition. It's also interesting to see a couple of chapters that use Python and Java (though only one for each) for the sample code, rather than the C++ used for most of the chapters. DirectX is used for much of the sample code, with OpenGL being used in a few of the graphics chapters.

This volume does have a few shortcomings, which again are typical for the series. Due to the length of the articles (about 5 to 15 pages each), some of them were a bit too short to cover the topic with sufficient depth. This is pretty subjective, since many people may be satisfied with a more high-level explanation, but it seems to me that the series would be better served with a smaller number of slightly longer articles that go into greater depth.

I also think that the price of the book is rather high. True, it's hardbound, but similar books have been published (notably, GPU Gems, which is hardbound, the same length, and printed in full-color) with notably lower prices. Since the book covers such a broad range of topic areas - only a handful of which will be of interest to you - the value of this book is diminished somewhat.

Despite the price, this book is still an important part of any complete game programming library. If you have the previous volumes, you'll want to pick it up for the index if nothing else.

                      Book Description

Submarines have progressed from the crude steam-driven craft of the Civil War to silent nuclear transports that can cruise for months without surfacing and carry intercontinental missiles mounting multiple warheads. Go back to the earliest experimental submersibles, the notorious German U-Boats of World War II that nearly destroyed the Allies' efforts, and follow the progress of over 280 other types. Notations are also included on civilian uses of subs as well as every important underwater weapon, for a truly comprehensive reference.

..This is THE book.....whatever it lacks in physical size it makes up for INSIDE the covers!

A full history of all major submarines from their inception to the present from ALL countries is what you find. A plethora of stats, comments and marvelous illustrations await you on this voyage. At the end of the sub listings are the ordinance they all use which is a great addendum to this already fine publication.
Mr Jackson has done himself (and the navies of the world) proud with this book.

A must have for anyone interested in the "dark deep"!

                        Book Description

Brilliant and bedraggled, the picaresque Jewish philosopher Solomon Maimon was one of the great thinkers of the eighteenth century. Now the definitive English version of Maimon's remarkable Autobiography, the 1888 translation by J. Clark Murray, is available for the first time in paperback, enhanced with a new introduction by Jewish studies scholar Michael Shapiro.

Wry and spirited, shrewd and unrepentant, Maimon alternated between nomadic destitution and intellectual swordplay among the Jewish elite of Berlin. The son of a petty merchant in Polish Lithuania, Maimon was a child Talmud prodigy who became increasingly antagonistic toward the Jewish establishment and receptive toward the secular philosophies of Spinoza, Hume, Leibnitz, and Kant.

A perpetual outsider, Maimon observed with an equally sharp eye the excesses of his time and the vicissitudes of his own life. Parallel to his own development as a thinker in the company of Moses Mendelssohn and others, Maimon conveys the physically wretched but spiritually vibrant Polish ghetto, the beginnings of Hasidism (which he denounces as antirationalist), and the world of the wealthy Berlin Jewry who enthusiastically embraced the ideas of the Enlightenment.

Combining philosophical discourse with personal anecdotes that shift abruptly from the tragic to the hilarious and back, Maimon's Autobiography indelibly portrays one man's devotion to truth on his own terms regardless of the cost to himself or others.

Solomon Maimon is known in the history of German Idealism as the person to whom Kant himself attributed the deeper understanding and penetration of the main problems of his Critique of Pure Reason. Moreover Maimon's internal criticism of Transcendental Idealism and his proposed solution to its major, according to him, problem paved the way for the theories of the post Kantian Idealists. So he was one of the thinkers who helped the thansformation of 'critical' to 'dogmatic' idealism. Now this may seem to many a step backward but this is another story.
In this small book just a few pages are devoted to Kant's reception of his manuscrispts. What we have instead is a concise, well written with brevity, wit and humor recounting of the memorable events of his extraordinary life. The form of the narrative is similar to that of a bildungsroman. He tells how he left the confines of his backward, isolated and ridden with prejudices small hometown in Polish Lithouania in search of knowledge.
Maimon was a man of exceptional intelligence and that was obvious not only to himself but also to his countrymen whose high esteem he commanded from a young age due to his excelence in the talmoudic studies. Yet he grew sceptical towards the latter and set out to seek rational and scientific enlightenment in Germany. In this endeavour he even managed because of his destitution to follow a beggar for six whole months, "two such heterogeneous persons were nowhere to be met in the world, I was an educated rabbi, he was an idiot".
His story from successes to misfortunes hovers from the hillarious to the tragic and reveals a personality of a genius whose naivety in social relationships and incistence never to pursue anything but knowledge kept him in almost constant destitution.
It is enjoyable reading and also contains much information about the jewish intellectual world in 18th century Europe.

5 out of 5 stars A rich historical document .......2005-02-06

This autobiography seems to me more important as a historical document than as a work of art. Maimon despite his great intellect and his courage in going where his mind led him does not seem to me to speak of himself or his life with great psychological depth or insight. I too think that he did not understand truly the nature of the Hasidic movement he criticized harshly. Still this is an important work as a document which gives insight into the Jewish world of his time.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, possibly not by Maimon.......1998-10-26

This is an amazing book and I am surprised it is not better known. It tells about the life of a Polish Jew who escaped from what he considered the stifling atmosphere of Polish Hasidic life and went to Germany to become part of the German Enlightenment. He translated Kant into Yiddish for the edification of his compatriots back home. The scenes depicting Maimon's marriage at the age of 12 and of Jewish life in eighteenth century Poland are very memorable. Someone told me recently that this book might not actually have been written by Maimon at all but by the "editor," the German writer Karl Philip Moritz, who apparently had a similar life. Perhaps that is why the book has not been reprinted.

                            Book Description

With extraordinary chutzpa and deep philosophical seriousness, Solomon ben Joshua of Lithuania renamed himself after his medieval intellectual hero, Moses Maimonides. Maimon was perhaps the most brilliant and certainly the most controversial figure of the late-eighteenth century Jewish Enlightenment. He scandalized rabbinic authorities, embarrassed Moses Mendelssohn, provoked Kant, charmed Goethe, and inspired Fichte, among others. This is the first study of Maimon to integrate his idiosyncratic philosophical idealism with his popular autobiography, and with his early unpublished exegetical, mystical, and Maimonidean work in Hebrew. In doing so, it illuminates the intellectual and spiritual possibilities open to a European Jew at the turn of the eighteenth century.

                                        Book Description

The doll is dead. Did Ken do it? Six stories of miniature crimes illustrated in gorgeous color reveal real CSI techniques.

Thomas Mauriello, preeminent expert on crime scene investigation, has been teaching modern CSI techniques for 26 years--how to "peel" a crime scene on a tiny scale including pulling back the bed sheets, turning over the victim, examining the body, etc. Now he uses his tried and tested crime scene dioramas to bring the science of modern crime investigation to everyone. Each of his six miniature crime scene dioramas contains clues to preliminarily determine cause of death--accident, suicide or homicide. A large photo of the dollhouse scene including murder weapons, victims, obvious clues and red herrings introduces each crime.

The text, written by bestelling author and award-winning journalist Ann Darby, takes the reader through what the detective learns when he arrives at the scene to the key questions and clues and then finally to the investigator's explanation of what really happened. After the first wide-angle photo, five follow-up photos focus on key clues spreading out through the remaining chapter. A total of 36 full-color photos from a professional photographer provide stunning visual compliment to the six investigative narratives.

The photos in this book are wonderful sharp. Each murder scene has a full photo of the room in which the murder took place with plenty of photos of clues. The format for each model contains a "story line" and goes into detail re the clues & evidence with accompanying details. I enjoy the story lines as they make the scenes more real - kind of like CSI but without finding out who-dun-it. The dioramas were made by the author as a teaching device for crime lab students. Because the aim of these dioramas is help his students "peel" a crime scene, the stories do not contain the answers to the mysteries.

Did you ever buy a book that absolutely exceeded your expectations? Well, you won't get that feeling from this book.

Although the introductory material was quite interesting (i.e., how the dollhouse-crime scene technique is used in training forensic science students), the remainder of the book is slow-paced dribble with scant references to actual photos of the dollhouse crime scenes. I just expected so much more; the introductory page to each of the scenarios shows the actual dollhouse scene that accompanies the vignette, but they are too amateurish, and anyone who has ever watched a complete 60-minute episode of any prime-time cop and/or court show would be able to describe the scene and investigation, perhaps with even more vivid detail and creativity than the author of these drab tales. C+ at best.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Incisive Examination.......2004-07-09

The epidemic of doll-on-doll crime is a fading memory, as real in America's collective memory as the crack epidemic and the O.J. Simpson trials, and all that's left is for the books to come out, letting us look back at those terrible tragedies that riveted the nation. Books like Ann Rule's "The Vinyl-Coated Killer" and Joe McGinnis' "How, Now, Mistress Doll" were excellent contributions to the genre. Now, "The Dollhouse Murders" adds a different perspective by telling the story of six deaths through the eyes of the investigators.

Author Thomas P. Mauriello has taken pains to disguise the names and locations of these crimes, to the point of changing the detective's name to "the Detective." But no matter, these stories retain their dark edge of madness and tragedy, and the plethora of crime-scene photos adds a visceral kick in the gut to even the most jaded true-crime aficionado.

Doll-on-doll crime may occur on a smaller scale, but that doesn't make them any less horrific. There's the attempted robbery at the family store. Amid the cash register and grocery shelves, two men lay dead. We follow the detective as he works the scene, attempting to deduce the chain of events that led to the tragedy: a cracked pane in the pastry case; the pattern of money thrown from the till; the splatter of blood-like paint by the corpses. These are the red threads that must be knitted together to create a satisfying narrative.

Readers interested in learning step-by-step how a scene is "processed" will see that there is no one right method of working, and explains why some crimes don't get solved, how guilt cannot be proven. Clues are gathered using observation, intuition and an intimate knowledge of forensics, such as the way blood gathers where the body meets the floor, or what the size of the entry wound implies. Miss a clue, and the narrative will still be created, but it won't be accurate. Fail to look around at the right time, or fail to keep an open mind as to suspects, and you have another JonBenet Ramsey case on your hand.

Murder freezes a moment in time and the detective is its archivist. "The Dollhouse Murders" opens a window into the lives of dolls, seeing them at work and at home, in places we never see. By placing their deaths in the context of their lives, Mauriello is also issuing a plea for empathy and tolerance, in effect, putting a human face on the vinyl victims. But even more, these are taut, grim tales of violence and death, told with an eye for observation and an ear for detail that recall the best of Joseph Waumbaugh, Ed McBain and Elmore Leonard. These stories pack a punch. And Judy.

                                        5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2003-11-08

In light of the recent trend on televison and in movies to whet our appetite for crime scene investigation methods, I found "The Dollhouse Murders" to be just what the M.E. ordered. I discovered there's still much to be learned, and the dollhouse scenarios, so cleverly contrived, are full of details which the other mediums of delivery simply don't have time to explore. Mr. Mauriello and Miss Darby have wedded their talents admirably and with seamless success.

                                        A great read!
