We received the book on a Saturday and read it cover to cover that evening! My husband laughed so hard that the couch shook! As we moved from page to page we chuckled, smiled , and laughed til tears came ....Leigh Rubin is a comic genius!. There are many levels to his insighful, powerful cartoons. The various levels of humor make his books appealing to every person...and also make the books fun to read over and over again. We see different aspects of the 'joke' with each reading..making the purchase a real bargain ! I encourage you to try this one ...and then expand your "Rubes" library...we certainly have ! :)

I bought this book for my dad because he's into politics. I read the book myself and a lot of the quotes made me go, "Huh?" That's exactly what the quotes in this book will do to you. Many politicians, I guess, have said things that don't make sense or are just downright dumb. For example, there's the one about the politician who tries to order a Chablis at McDonald's. A Chablis at McDonald's?! Helll-ooo! Where did he think he was, anyway? Sadly, politicians have also said things that are downright racist or sexist, which shows how ignorant they can really be. And these are the people who are supposed to be representing us.

Sure, we know how dumb things find a way to get into our politicians' mouths (Monica excluded), but this very funny book just shows how repeatedly dumb some politicians can be. Although I am Republican, I found most of the humor in Dan Quayle's quotes, of which there are many. The scary thing is we continue to elect these people to office to represent and lead us. Makes you think.

Very funny -- I think someone already said here that it was frightening and I agree. But it is very funny nevertheless. It makes you realize that many politicians are worth being scared about but you laugh at the same time. I guess it makes it less painful, right?! Anyway, this is very funny whether you are a conservative or a liberal because both sides seem to be equally represented and both are saying very stupid things. Whatever side you're on, I am willing to bet it is here if you want to make a point!

I was disappointed as I had thought this would be very funny, but it wasn't very much so. I agree with the ho-hum comment as this was quotes I'd seen before and not very interesting as they were old. I had thought and hoped with a new election there weould be something new, but it was all the old Quayle and Reagan and Dole and such. And that is so lame and old!!! I expected new quotes from Gore and Goerge W. Bush. This seemed very dated already, unfortunately. But then, I guess it's because it takes along time to publish a book, right? Whatever, it is a shame, since this was a good idea. I just wish it had worked better, no offense.

I'm a political junkie, so thought this would be fun -- But I've read these quotes already in another political humor quote book I got last summer, "The Stupidest Things Said by Politicians"

Coincidence? Maybe - I mean, how many stupid things can anyone collect...but, all in all, it's pretty uncanny....and pretty much the same thing, even down to the descriptions. I was hoping for more, not that I'm complaining, but this was the same stuff I just read a few months ago!!! I must admit this book really disappointed me on that level, since I had seen these quotes before and, for that matter, more of them. I must admit I was more pleased with the other book, since this was pretty much a rehash, but I did like the fact that it split out demo and rep quotes, even if they were ones I knew before. All in all, though, I was really unimpressed; I mean, how many Dan Quayle quotes do we need to pay for, since they're free on the net?!?!? And isn't that a little bit tired?

I am one of those that gets too hot and serious at election time, and this book was the perfect antidote for me. I laughed so hard I got a three-hour case of the hiccups. I'm glad someone out there is keeping track of the funny and very human side of politics.

The information I wanted when I bought this book is there. This book will be like my Unix in a Nut Shell book. Heavily used, heavily book marked, with dog eared pages as I keep going back to various sections for additional information.

That is the sign of a good book. Well used.

Snort made easy!.......2006-03-10

O'Reilly's "Managing Security with Snort and IDS Tools" by Cox and Greg is a practical book that succinctly describes the basic functionality and utility of implanting Snort. The book does an excellent job at discussing the different configuration parameters when deploying Snort.

In particular, I was impressed by:
* Page 35 - A 5-page list detailing the different options available via the command-line.
* Page 69 - Details some of the techniques used to evade IDSs.
* Chapter 5's description of preprocessor configurations was a valuable tool to a newbie of UNIX.
* Chapter 10 description of ACID as a Snort IDS Management Console.

The only area I wish the authors expanded on was in Chapter 7 "Creating Your Own Rules". This area can easily be supplemented from documentation on the web.

The book has a natural bias toward elevating open source tools (I am fan of open source tools). Appreciating that fact, I must admit I have used this book when I have been describing the value of open source tools. Overall, I think "Managing Security with Snort and IDS Tools" is a valuable addition to anyone's Snort arsenal.

One of the better discourses on Snort.......2004-12-28

This is basically a book about intrusion detection using all open source tools. It starts with an introductory chapter that explains the problem of defining an intrusion and why it is becoming more and more of a problem. It follows up with a chapter on network traffic analysis including packet sniffing and using tcpdump and ethereal. Then comes the meat of the text - installing Snort. Of course to really understand how to use Snort you have to understand how attacks occur and the common methods used. The authors provide a really nice chapter on this subject. After that come five chapters on configuring, deploying, and managing Snort rules, intrusion prevention strategies, and tuning. Once Snort is up and running the authors examine the use of ACID and SnortCenter as Snort IDS management consoles. Either of these products drastically decreases the burden of analyzing what has happened and is happening on the intrusion detection forefront. The book ends with additional tools for Snort IDS management and implementation strategies for high-bandwidth situations.

There are other very good books on Snort but one of the things that makes this one particularly valuable is that it also looks at other open source tools and provides a good basic background on intrusion detection theory. Managing Security with Snort and IDS Tools is highly recommended for those in charge of intrusion detection and prevention in a network environment and planning to implement a system their self.

Excellent description of Snort.......2004-10-10

Up to this point, I've only use simple firewalls for my home network. Not that I think there's anything really worth hacking on my home network, but I thought I'd spend a little time learning about intrusion detection. This book is great for several reasons. First, it is well put together and easy to follow. Second, it describes in detail the open source project Snort. Finally, it satisfied my curiosity about IDS (Intrusion detection systems) - I'm not an expert, but I now understand the concepts.

Even though the book did not mention OS X specifically, it was easy to get snort compiled and installed on my Mac. There were a few tweaks I had to do, but if you're familiar with "configure; make; make install", it should be a snap. (Likewise, fink or darwinports can get you going with Snort as well). Any other flavor of Unix/Linux would be that much easier to install.

Beyond just describing how to install and configure Snort, the book does go into some detail about how networks are attacked and how Snort goes about alerting you to possible intrusive behavior. There are also numerous reference to web sites and other books to find more information. It also goes into detail on various other tools that augment and complement Snort.

I first found this book in a dumpster behind a school. I was 6 years old and read this book. Many of the concepts were easy enough to understand as a youngster. I will never forget the concept of 3phase electricity that I grasped from that book. Thanks to this book I have put instrumentation on the International Space Station and work with Femtosecond laser systems.

My all time favorite basic electricity book........1999-06-15

I'm a power plant operator. I've had to take basic electricity courses for job promotions, (after taking a written test). This is the only book written (that my co-workers and I have had to study) that you can learn from on your own. The other books seemed to be written for a classroom setting, with an instructor.

I am always on the prowl for books which can help untangle the somewhat complicated world of alternating current. In particular, how inductive and capacitive reactance interact in AC circuits. Anyone who has tried to teach AC theory will appreciate the problem. The complex nature of the subject lends itself to explanations which are shrouded by arcane formulas. Frequently these formulas are simply presented as "facts" and the students grind out pages of impressive calcuations which they barely understand. "Electricity 4" lays bare the magic behind RCL circuits in clear, easy to understand language. Yes, the formulas are still there, but they are not the heart of the explanation.
