      Book Description

The adventure series concludes in this extra-length full-color edition.

All good things must come to an end, and with this 50th volume in the Prince Valiant series the most ambitious comic strip reprint project ever attempted comes to a close. We celebrate with an extra-long final installment, which covers the last story arc that Valiant creator Hal Foster wrote and laid out for artist John Cullen Murphy before retiring from the series.

In this installment, Arn and two companions are sent on a mission to find out if Vikings are planning to invade the Isle of Man. Danger abounds, and yet all's well that ends well and the end of the album (and of our series) finds Valiant's entire family reunited one last time in the glory that is Camelot!

With its thrilling continuities of a fictitious knight in the era of King Arthur's Court, Prince Valiant set a new standard for the serial drama when it debuted in 1937. There had been continuity strips, and even strong elements of adventure, before Hal Foster started drawing comic strips, but approximately 35 years after the birth of the artform, it was Foster who introduced illustrative techniques—and the sensibilities and standards of such illustrative greats as Howard Pyle—to the comics page. Realistic depictions and sophisticated compositions had been curiously absent before him. He is still considered, 21 years after his death and 66 years since Prince Valiant debuted, to be comics' supreme classicist, and the strip continues to live on in over 100 newspapers across America.

          Book Description

This collection of film reviews and essays focuses on the role of women in films during the 1970s and 1980s. The author, a widely published film critic, examines the shifting portrayals of women from the almost anti-progressive treatment of women in the early 1970s through the integration of more progressive professional women in the films of the late 1980s. She shows that most of the important movies of the period were about women and that these films seemed to reflect the momentous changes that women were going through in the society at large. McCreadie's in-depth analysis of women in cinema is augmented with personal interviews with leading female actresses of the period including Jane Fonda, Kathleen Turner, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, Sally Field, Anjelica Huston, and others. Taking a chronological approach to her subject, McCreadie shows that the late 1970s saw some radical breakthroughs in roles for women in such movies as Annie Hall and Coming Home--perhaps reflecting the outcries earlier in the decade that women were not being treated progressively in current cinema. These more progressive and sometimes shattering images of women were in some cases even more advanced than the society the films were attempting to characterize. Throughout the early 1980s there was a sharp retreat from this position as movies like Ghostbusters and The River showed a definite backlash against feminism and gains made by women. Finally, in the late 1980s, the focus has turned toward more progressive and accomplished women in cinema although, even here, McCreadie argues, there is sometimes a conservative or reactionary hue to even the most advanced role models offered by film. Students of film, women's studies, and popular culture will find McCreadie's analysis fascinating and illuminating reading.

Casting Couch Confessions is a collection of erotic stories loosely linked by the theme of the gay porn movie industry.

Old favourites like Simon Sheppard, In Touch's editor Alan Mills, Dominic Santi, the incomparable Barry Alexander and editor Dave MacMillan rub shoulders with newcomers such as Ruthless, David Logan, George Dibbs, Bill Crimmin and many more.

There is humour, romance, tenderness, insight and plenty of hot, horizontal action.

If you've ever wondered how porn stars audition for a part. If you've ever daydreamed about bumping into your favourite screen hunk in the supermarket. If you've ever wondered if porn actors are as hot between the sheets as they seem on the screen, this is the book for you.

                            Book Description

One of the most significant developments in the popular culture of the past decade has been the popularization of elite tastes for mass audiences. Blockbuster museum shows, high-concept literary adaptations, widespread interest in interior design, and superstar opera singers all suggest that the relationship between high art and popular culture is undergoing a profound transformation. But what does this marriage of good taste and popular culture really mean?High-Pop is a collection of newly commissioned essays that explores this cultural formation across disciplines and media - from film, television, and interior design/material culture to publishing, music, and museum exhibition. Drawing on contemporary instances of a global phenomenon, nine leading thinkers explore a number of important issues central to cultural criticism: the increasingly unsettled relationship between the public and private spheres; the blurring distinction between consumer culture and aesthetic value; the impact of high-pop on our cultural identity; and the nature and the future of popular culture itself. An edited collection with a genuinely polemical agenda, High-Pop does nothing less than issue a challenge to the project of cultural studies to focus on all but ignored forms of mainstream culture.

A computer is dandy, and two computers mean fun for the whole family. But to get the most out of your investment in computer equipment--which is to say, printers, scanners, digital cameras, and high-speed Internet connections as well as computers--you need a local-area network. PC Magazine Guide to Home Networking shows you how to hook your machines together in a simple Local-Area Network (LAN), using a wired or wireless switch with built-in router functionality (it's the router that enables you to share an Internet hookup). Its instructions are easy to follow, and Les Freed places emphasis on the tasks (like sharing printers and broadband links) most people consider most important. When those jobs are done, he moves on to more obscure subjects like hybrid wired/wireless LANs and unusual firewall configurations.

This book will prove useful primarily to people using Windows XP (and maybe some older versions of Microsoft Windows as well), though some of the illustrations that show how to configure a simple router (both D-Link and Linksys devices are shown) will be universally handy. One handy feature: A "Home Networking Cookbook" that shows, step-by-step, how to configure a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and do other network jobs. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to set up a simple home network that allows file-, printer-, and Internet connection-sharing. Sections address security through firewalling, networked data storage, and VPNs.

Networking—it's not just for the office any more. Here's how to get all your electronic devices on the same team

Ready to plunge into creating your own home network? You couldn't ask for a better guide through the networking maze than PC Magazine contributing editor Les Freed. From why you should network to whether you need a switch or a hub and how to hook in your Playstation, reading this book is like having Les drop by and set the whole thing up for you. And you don't even need to move those back issues of PC Magazine off the couch.

Directed at a very general audience. Freed does not assume you are proficient with either hardware or software related to building out a home network. He gives careful exposition of a wired ethernet LAN and of the increasingly popular wireless LAN.

For the wired LAN, he really does start from the basics. There is a closeup photo of an RJ-45 connector, as a good example. This is one of those things that computer professionals have known for years. And once you know something like this, you've subsumed the knowledge so thoroughly that it is axiomatic. So it's easy to forget that for many people, RJ-45 is forbidding gibberish. That is just one case. He follows it up with a photo of common cable tools. In other words, you can take this book to an electrical supplies store and find the items. Some of you may laugh at this. But there are people out there who really need this basic advice. (Perhaps you?)

Most of the book is this way. Broad appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide - even if you are not a beginner.......2004-07-09

This is a very thorough guide to the variety of home networking options available. Both wired and wireless networking is covered (in their own chapters,) and it offers good advice on selecting equipment, as well as complete step by step instructions for setting up the network, installing computers and other machines (like TiVo, Media Servers, networked DVD players and more,) sharing internet access, printers, all the configuration and troubleshooting - everything you need to get up and running with a home network.

But for me, the thing that really sets this book off from other home networking books is the Home Networking Cookbook section. This part provides instructions and setup for a dozen different network configurations ranging from the basic LAN with router, to separate modem and router locations, to expanded wired LAN with wireless access points, secure remote access configurations and more. This alone was worth the price of the book as in each configuration it outlines the equipment needed, the network layout, configuration and setup.

If you are new to home networking, this book is perfect for you and will get you up and running in no time. If you are a bit more experienced, you will still find the troubleshooting and configuration sections useful, and for me the Cookbook section was the quickest and easiest way to set up a variety of configurations.

                            2 out of 5 stars Basic information.......2004-06-19

This is an OK book for a beginner who knows little or nothing about networking. It does describe the various types of home networking available today, with a lot of information about wireless technologies. It could have been better organized by covering ethernet and wireless in separate sections. It is neither very clear for one getting started in home networking nor very helpful for one with basic knowledge who is looking to establish a more complex home network. It is an easy read and the "tips" inserts are helpful--really the best informative parts of the book. However, unless you are brand new to computers and networking, that is about all that is useful. Otherwise, save your money.

Using a wide arrangement of visual tools, this atlas offers a detailed overview of the experiences and important events surrounding Americans of Asian descent. Long neglected in general studies, Asian-American history resources have been scarce. Featuring detailed maps and authoritative text, this book tells the story of not one group of people but many. Photographs, line graphs, charts, chronologies, box features, and maps help explore the cultural, historical, political, and social history of Asian Americans. Coverage also profiles key events and issues in their homelands, especially those factors that influenced their movement to the United States.

There are books that are fine and attractive volumes, books that are valuable for their purview of other cultures, books that stand alone as art. This atlas, in truth a working volume and nothing to be set aside in some sterile cabinet, is all of those and then some. There are a couple of books that joust for the title of the most beautiful and well-conceived in late 20th century bookmaking -- without a doubt this would be one of the very few.

A colleague of mine in graduate school first turned me toward Conklin's work; since then, it occupies a place in my pantheon of the most important works of mainstream cartography even produced, right up there with *The California Water Atlas* (produced in 1980 at vast expense to the State of California), the Richard Kagan-edited *Spanish Cities of the Golden Age*, and perhaps some of the Princeton Architectural Press volumes of the late 1990s.

And, y'know, that should count for something. An atlas isn't easy to produce, it's costly and it requires an almost impossible amount to labor. To end up with something so spectacular as the Conklin *Ethnographic Atlas* is an ultimate tribute to him and to his team, as authors, but even more, to Yale University Press, which originally printed the atlas -- although they also allowed it to go out of print, for which we can only mouth the phrase "shame."

Buy this if you can, consult it in a [really good] library if you can't buy it, and in either event, cherish the knowledge of place and of experience that such a work offers.

5 out of 5 stars Review from John Klock.......2000-03-09

This atlas is a work of art and a national treasure. This ethnographic atlas is for serious students of Ifugao and the Philippine Cordillera Central. The atlas is also a model for world-wide ethnographic studies. There is not another precedent for such a work. In order to truly appreciate his in-depth analysis of Ifugao agriculture, down to the rice pannicle, one has to see how complex Ifugao agricultural life really is. Rarely in this world do we find individuals as dedicated to their scholarly work as Mr. Conklin.

                                Book Description

With more than one hundred four-color maps supplemented by photographs and reconstructions, the Historical Atlas of the Vietnam War provides the first major visualization of that war as well as a penetrating and comprehensive analysis of the conflict based on both U.S. and Vietnamese postwar accounts. The atlas begins with an overview of the foundations of the Vietnamese nation-state, including its almost two-thousand-year struggle to break free from Chinese domination and its century-long fight to gain its independence from French colonial rule, and sets the 1954 partition of the country and the subsequent American involvement there in their cold war context. U.S. involvement is examined in depth to provide an understanding of why America intervened and why, despite its battlefield successes, it ultimately failed to obtain its political objective: a free and independent South Vietnam. Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr., examines the many anomalies of the war, including why the United States bought the Communist propaganda line that relations between China and Vietnam were as "the lips to the teeth," when Vietnam actually felt betrayed by its Chinese "ally." Unlike most U.S. writings on the war, which end with the 1968 Tet Offensive - a failing analogous to ending the study of World War II with Stalingrad or Guadalcanal - Summers' essay draws on North Vietnamese sources to explode the notion that the war was an indigenous South Vietnamese uprising. He details the destruction of the Viet Cong guerrillas in the Tet Offensive and tells how the war was primarily a conventional one waged by the regular armed forces of North Vietnam during the last seven years. The atlas examines the curious effect of the U.S. antiwar movement, the "Vietnamization" of the war, the Americans' cynical abandonment of their Asian ally, and the final North Vietnamese multi-division blitzkrieg that led to the fall of Saigon in 1975, as well as Robert McNamara's self-serving apologia that the war was militarily unwinnable from the onset. Given the strong emotion involved, many of the Vietname generation may continue to be wedded to their prejudices. But it has been said that those who came of age after the war know there is a skeleton in the family closet and now want to be let in on the secret. An examination of the forensic evidence, the Historical Atlas of the Vietnam War is the closest we have yet come to a thorough autopsy of that debacle.

4 out of 5 stars The War in Graphic Detail.......2006-08-31

All in all, this book is a pretty good narrative of the entire Vietnam War. The text is simple and concise, thus making it a relatively easy read. It is about 213 pages long but the reader will only read half these pages as the other half contain full page maps. The book is broken into seven major sections. Each section starts with a short narrative. Thus, the reader has a quick understanding of the upcoming battles.

The only shortcoming of the text is that the descriptions of the various battles are sometimes too brief. The Battle of the Ia Drang is essentially described as the Americans landing on an NVA Regiment, a battle ensued, the Americans called in air strikes and won the day. The reader is forced to look at other sources for any meaningful description of the battle.

Nevertheless, this book has some very good qualities. The often vague battlefield descriptions are overcome by excellent graphic maps. These full color maps provide a clear detail of the various units in a battle as well as their line of attack or retreat. The book also contains a good selection of photographs relating to each specific battle. Finally, this book is more than a collection of maps, pictures, and brief battlefield narratives. It also describes events and organizations such as MACV, the Green Berets, and the assassination of President Diem.

Bottom line: this book is a quick easy read about the entire Vietnam War. Although the battle narratives are weak, they are compensated by excellent graphic maps. This is a good addition to any home library about the Vietnam War.

This is a beautifully illustrated book with battlefield plans of the Vietnam Wars and details of all the troop movements. It places the reader right at the center of the war zone. The text on the left handside details the events involved at the time while maps are drawn on the right handside.

The texts are concised, focused and give the reader a clear and broad picture of the war.

2 out of 5 stars Problems with the Maps.......2000-05-28

Too many things are shown in the wrong places on the maps.

The most hilarious example is on page 97. Laos had two capital cities: the royal capital of Luang Prabang, where the (purely ceremonial) king lived, and the administrative capital of Vientiane, where there was an actual government. On this map, Luang Prabang has been moved across the border into North Vietnam (a very strange place for the royal capital of Laos), while Vientiane has been moved across the other border into Thailand. The same map also has the town of Vinh, in North Vietnam, shifted westward from its actual location near the coast; it appears on this map to be closer to the Laotian border than to the sea.

Flip one page back to look at the map on page 95, which shows the Tonkin Gulf Incidents and the U.S. air strikes of August 5, 1964. This map has Vinh in the right place, but Hanoi has been mislocated; it is shown as being southwest of Haipong (Hanoi is actually northwest of Haiphong). More important, the map shows Hon Gai, one of the targets of the U.S. air strikes, as being right next to the Chinese border. Hon Gai is actually well to the southwest of the location shown; if it had been close to the Chinese border, Lyndon Johnson would not have approved the strike against it in this operation. The location shown for the aircraft carrier Constellation, which launched the planes for the strike against Hon Gai, is also seriously inaccurate.

A small inset map on page 95 shows the tracks of the two U.S. destroyers Maddox and Turner Joy, on the night of August 4, 1964, and the tracks of objects that appeared on their radar, believed to be torpedo boats attacking them. The track shown for the supposed torpedo boat designated V2 bears no resemblance to any track that shows in the records of the destroyers, and the track shown for V1 does not bear a close resemblance to any track that shows in the records of the destroyers.

I have not found so many errors in other maps in this atlas, but I have found more than I liked. The one thing an atlas is absolutely supposed to do is show things in the correct locations on the maps.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1998-12-09

Adds a new dimension sorely lacking in other good books about Vietnam. Good historical coverage all the way back to pre-history, sharp clear graphics and comprehensive coverage. I was there in 1968-69 and think this book is a valuable addition to anyone's Vietnam collection -- or a fine place to start if you are just learning about this country and its wars. Kudos to Colonel Summers, the author, for producing such a fine atlas.

This book provides much needed information on how the biggest campaigns of both the Indochina War and Vietnam War,referred too (rightly)as the Second Indochina War,were fought. Here you will find detailed maps and narratives showing the development of a given battle or campaign.

This book dispels the idea that somehow the military operations in Indochina could not be traced in a clear, coherent way.THE HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE VIETNAM WAR does just that thanks to excellent, high quality graphics and maps and authoritative commentary from STANLEY KARNOW and HARRY G.SUMMERS.These two historians(in my opinion the top experts on Vietnam)make this book something much more than just a book of maps. From pre-colonial to post-war Indochina, from coverage of set piece battles to Phoenix Program and Naval Forces,to the anti-war movement,My Lai and congress,HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE VIETNAM WAR is THE new reference about the war.

Buy it with confidence.I did and i am not dissapointed.

                                Book Description

Historians of the African American experience after Reconstruction have tended to imply that the black elite served only their own interests, that their exclusive control of black institutions precluded efforts to improve the status of African Americans in general. In Leading the Race, Jacqueline M. Moore reevaluates the role of this black elite by examining how their self-interest interacted with the needs of the black community in Washington, D.C., the center of black society at the turn of the century.

Immediately following Reconstruction, black elites did concern themselves with creating social distinctions, but, Moore argues, the conditions of Jim Crow segregation quickly forced their transformation into a racially conscious group. Studying this transformation in detail, Moore focuses on Washington, D.C., whose leading men and women would be equalled in brilliance only by those of Harlem in the 1920s.

The small group who made up a black social elite in Washington from 1880 to 1920 faced many challenges to their economic and social status. The rise of segregation and disenfranchisement of African Americans in the South led to disillusionment with the Reconstruction promise of biracial cooperation and assimilation, and the end of Home Rule in the District cut the few political ties between blacks and whites.

In the struggle to maintain their status, the black elite created new strategies of racial advancement that tied them inseparably to the black community while establishing their claim to lead it. This new elite became more open to men and women of exceptional abilities and achievements, basing judgments on merit rather than on family background or skin color. As these blacks lost faith in assimilation, they began to build a solid community base from which to speak out against racism.

Something different in ethnic studies, Jacqueline M. Moore's Leading The Race provides an examination of the transformation of the black elite in the nation's capitol from 1880-1920. While historians generally imply that elite served their own interests which didn't improve the status of blacks in this country, Moore argues that this elite was forced to change its perspectives to become more racially conscious. Chapters consider influences on this change.

This work is a very excellent record of the social and cultural history of Black America's "social capital" during the late 19th century. Ms. Moore has done an excellent job in her research. Her work stands to join the ranks of such works as Williard Gatewood's "Aristocrats of Color"; Gerri Major's "Black Society"; and Stephen Birmingham's "Certain People: America's Black Elite", all of which reflect upon the glorious history of the black elite in Washington,D.C. during the late 19th Century. I highly recommend this one. I read it in one day!

                                  Book Description

This book revolutionizes how vision can be taught to undergraduate and graduate students in cognitive science, psychology, and optometry. It is the first comprehensive textbook on vision to reflect the integrated computational approach of modern research scientists. This new interdisciplinary approach, called "vision science," integrates psychological, computational, and neuroscientific perspectives.

The book covers all major topics related to vision, from early neural processing of image structure in the retina to high-level visual attention, memory, imagery, and awareness. The presentation throughout is theoretically sophisticated yet requires minimal knowledge of mathematics. There is also an extensive glossary, as well as appendices on psychophysical methods, connectionist modeling, and color technology. The book will serve not only as a comprehensive textbook on vision, but also as a valuable reference for researchers in cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, optometry, and philosophy.

Palmer has written an outstanding book for the technically trained reader, even if that reader has a casual interest in understanding the emergence of of human cognition from the physics of vision, to the function of sight.
Absent from the book is a cogent presentation of aesthetics of seeing. For that the interested reader should see John Gage's Color and Meaning.

Stephen Palmer has written a marvelous book. Its well organized and written. It is suitable as a reference & text for those beginning and advancing to higher levels in Vision Science. The pictures, diagrams, graphs, charts, photos, and outlines are well placed and explained in the body of the text. Because Dr. Palmer is first a Neuropsychologist, the approach is more geared toward psychological mechanisms & psychophysics. The emphasis is less on Biological Approaches to Visual Function. This & Chalupa's 2 Volume Set should get novice to intermediate scientists going further in Vision Science!

As an interested academic in a completely unrelated field (chemistry) Palmer's book was only the second cognitive psychology text that I had ever read. It was an "eye opener." There should be awards given to authors who commit themselves and succeed at the task of what Palmer has done here. The book was comprehensive and didn't pull any punches, but was still very readable. The quality of the writing and organization leads me to assume that the man is a gifted teacher as well. The layout, glossary, index, and organization of the text were clearly constructed with the reader in mind. Five star reviews at Amazon.com should be reserved for books of this quality.

5 out of 5 stars A unique text for students and researchers alike........1999-05-14

This is an excellent book! Steve Palmer is perhaps best known for his work on perceptual grouping and perceptual organization. With this text, however, Palmer proves that his interests extend beyond these boundaries into the domain of perception as a whole. Palmer also demonstrates that his interests are not confined by one methodology either. Presenting findings from a number of perspectives is one of the things that excites Palmer the most, and he does it like no other. By making use of relevant research in neuroscience, psychology, computer vision and linguistics, to name a few, Palmer develops a unified text for the emerging domain of "Vision Science", a subfield of the larger interdisciplinary enterprise of Cognitive Science.

Palmer's book differs from other books on visual perception in three major ways. First, Palmer introduces the major theoretical perspectives to visual perception--inferential, ecological and computational-- early in the text and then places empirical findings throughout the text in the context of these perspectives. Second, Palmer presents findings from a number of disciplines in an integrated fashion. As opposed to having separate sections for neuroscience, computer vision and perceptual development, for example, Palmer presents research from multiple disciplines as it relates to relevant areas of visual perception, such as perceptual organization or object recognition. Third, and perhaps most importantly, Palmer resists the temptation to dichotomize. The discussions of the literature are sophisticated, presenting both the pros and the cons of different approaches to phenomena in perception, even venturing to propose novel theoretical syntheses at various points in the book.

For anyone who is interested in visual perception, neuroscience, computer vision, or just Cognitive Science in general, this is a book that you must have on your book shelf.

                                    Book Description

What does it take to change the behavior of people and businesses with respect to the environment? In the 1990s a group of social scientists gathered to discuss this question from their individual perspectives in disciplines ranging from marketing to theology and jurisprudence to psychology. Rather soon it became clear to them that they first needed to focus on basic assumptions about human motivation and rationality; otherwise it was impossible for, say, the economist who regards individuals as calculating maximizers of utility, to understand the sociologist who presumes they are role-playing or norm-guided beings.

Prompted by these debates on first principles, this volume gathers together some of the participants' perspectives on rationality. Wherever possible, the authors link the discussion of rationality to matching conceptions of nature and human attitudes toward it.

The colloquy is opened by asking what it means to act rationally insofar as human actions have an impact on the environment, and then proceeds to trace the history of `practical reason' from Aristotle to Rawls. The environmental crisis is portrayed as a crisis of paradigms, wherefore some of the sociological and cultural dimensions of rationality are explored.

Also addressed are, respectively, the means of environmental governance, as seen from an intersection of political science and economics; the concept and implementation of sustainability in environmental law; the ways that intervention strategies reflect assumptions about human reasoning and motivation; the mixed rationality called for by the complexities of environmental law, exemplified by the Convention on Biological Diversity; and an argument for supplementing rational choice theory with a theory of values in order to explain why people make so many seemingly illogical decisions.

This book is for anyone interested in multidisciplinary perspectives on rationality or the human dimension of environmental regulation.
