Book Description
From Errol Flynn to Kevin Costner to Daffy Duck, the bandit of Sherwood Forest has gone through a variety of incarnations on the way to becoming a cinematic staple. The historic Robin Hood-actually an amalgam of several outlaws of medieval England-was continually transformed by oral tradition to become the romantic and deadly archer-swordsman who "robbed from the rich to give to the poor." This image was reinforced by popular literature, song and, in the 20th century, cinema. This volume provides in-depth information on each film based on the immortal hero. In addition, other historical figures such as Scottish rebel-outlaws Rob Roy MacGregor and William Wallace are examined. Nollen also explores nontraditional representations of the legend, such as Frank Sinatra's Robin and the Seven Hoods and Westerns featuring the Robin Hood motif. A filmography is provided, including production information, and the text is highlighted by rare photographs, advertisements, and illustrations.

From literature to legend on the screen........2004-08-06
As with his books on ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON and SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, Nollen's ROBIN HOOD: A CINEMATIC HISTORY explores the transformation of a piece of literature into a motion picture, but here the author goes back 1,000 years to provide a look at how history becomes legend becomes literature becomes drama becomes film. The author does an impressive job of following the tale of Robin Hood over a huge period of time--the work of a proper historian who also knows film like the back of his hand. First, he provides a beautifully written, novelistic history of Britain at the time of the Norman conquest, then presents his choices for the "real" Robin Hood (with convincing arguments about William Wallace and Robert the Bruce), then moves into early plays and operas, novels and finally the films, including comprehensive sections on Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, Disney, Kevin Costner (heaven forbid!), Patrick Bergin, and the "Scottish Robin Hood" films--BRAVEHEART and ROB ROY. As always, a fabulous read with many great photos and frame enlargements. A beautifully bound hardcover book worth the price!
Several books in one.......2003-06-18
There are several theories and much speculation about whether there was a real Robin Hood or a combination of heroes and characters that compose Robin Hood. Understanding these theories help to understand the cinematic robin hoods.
The first half of this book is not the cinematic Robin Hood but a tight and cohesive history of great Brittan with an emphasis on the origin of the Robin Hood legends.
The second half of the book that covers the Cinema does just that. Not only does it cover the actors that play Robin, but all the people and props that go in to making the legend.

a nice academic introduction.......2001-06-25
robin hood is really best appreciated viscerally, not intellectually. but this book manages to do a nice job of combining the two by analyzing the character thru his cinematic history.
delving into the fairbanks and flynn versions is to be expected, but nollen also explores the legend from viewing several other works, many of which might not be known to you. he also does a fine job of tying in the scottish counterparts (rob roy, et al) and explaining their impact on the popular conception of robin.
all in all, a fine book of film criticism, and a nice addition to the robin hood bookshelf.

Customer Reviews:
It's all the information I was hoping to find in other books and didn't........2006-02-25
Clear but concise explanations of many of the features and functions you may already be marginally aware of, but may not understand how to use. These features are generally only mentioned in other books, but are more clearly explained here. I teach the Adobe suite, and feel pretty comfortable using these applications, but most of what I know has come from books because I live in an isolated area. Whenever a book comes along that helps me to understand features I haven't been using, I really appreciate it. Short on glamour, it is just black text on white pages; the techniques are most often presented in two page layouts with screen captures as needed. The book is small enough to hold on your lap or have next to the computer as you work. Reading and using one technique a day might be a great way to go through the book as opposed to just reading. Some tips will be of interest to new users, while others are aimed at the intermediate or advanced level, which is exactly how it's noted on the back cover. Easy reading, chapter headings make it simple to find what you need, but there's also a good index. I find the organization very helpful. There are general tips presented first, regarding the use of Bridge, and setting up preferences to work with the suite more interactively. Then techniques for individual application components are presented and I appreciate the inclusion of GoLive here since I use it. I know everyone else uses DW, but our school chose to go with the Adobe Suite way back when. I have been responsible for the extensive dept. web site and I found GoLive up to the task. And last, tips having to do with the use of Acrobat and Version Cue. I've been using Acrobat for years, but on a fairly rudimentary level and I didn't understand Version Cue at all, so this book has provided some terrific information there. All in all, I think this book is a bargain, excellent, much needed information presented in a simple format. Some tips may be over your head if you're just beginning, but later on you'll be glad they're here. Especially useful: tips on using Bridge more fully, the most useful and least understood aspects of Photoshop and Illustrator, using Master Pages and Frames in InDesign as well as creating books (something I need to do right now), CSS in GoLive (a special thank you for that), time-saving batch processing techniques, and Acrobat and Version Cue techniques that wrap up the final needed tips. This book is definitely not a rehash of anything you've seen elsewhere. It's all the information I was hoping to find in other books and didn't. This book is an excellent resource and I'll keep it handy. There isn't one thing in here I would consider filler. The subtitle is 100 essential techniques and that seems to fit the content perfectly.
It is Essential you buy this book........2006-02-01
"100 Essential Techniques" solved at least a half dozen situations right off the bat. George's writing style is clear and concise and his selection of techniques are those that you need to be aware of. Having flipped through the book several times reading what was intriguing, I am reading from front to back. I found that I could read this book on my comute and remember the simple steps on how to impliment the techniques when I was in front of the computer. Real sweet, what's next George?
Excellent.......2006-01-24
An excellent book, particularly helpful in discovering the new nooks and crannies of the CS line. It's definitely a book I wish I had sooner. It shed a lot of light on the Bridge as well as Version Cue that I just wasn't getting before.
I am familiar with George's style of writing and this book is no exception, to his casual yet informative tone.
So straightforward - a must read when upgrading! .......2006-01-24
This book was super helpful getting me up to speed when I did an upgrade from the pre-CS product line. It covers the basics, but also gets you into some of the more advanced time savers. There's a website for it too, which has been updated with a couple of new tips.
100 Essential Techniques- really essential!.......2006-01-23
Thank goodness! Finally, a resource that's quick access, a quick fix to my problems and helpful, succinct answers to my questions. A must-have for anyone using the new CS2.
Product Description
In this reissue of a highly praised intellectual history, which traces historical and anti-historical themes from Nietzsche, Croce, and Heidegger to Gadamer, Foucault, Derrida, and Rorty, David Roberts pinpoints tendencies toward overreaction in the postmodern turn, and shows how historians can deepen their self understanding and play a more central role in a postmodern culture. His way of rethinking such contested categories as presentism and relativism, master narratives and "others," enables us better to understand the cultural place of historical inquiry. Includeds a new preface that responds to critics and places the work within the changing framework of debate over postmodernism and history.
Book Description
This compelling narrative explains how Native Americans found themselves time and again betrayed by the ever-expanding white nation of the East, fighting for lands on the edge of the shrinking frontier. Long considered a classic, this edition features an introduction by Dee Brown, author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.
Customer Reviews:
Pleasantly surprised.......2006-12-13
After reading the other review calling the book revisionist...I was pleasantly surprised, by this book. I would call it very evenly balanced, presenting both sides of the historical record. Very equally balanced, and also extraordinarily well written. The author was a master of story telling. His historical accounts not only present events I had never heard of, they do it in such a way that you are informed and engrossed in the historical account.
Highly recommended for study of the Sioux, early Minnesota, plus many other tribes and states. (Osage, comanche, etc)

Forefather of justified Plains Indian revisionist history.......2006-01-22
Ralph Andrist, already in 1964, opened the doors for authors to follow, such as Dee Brown and "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."
Andrist tells the story facing eastward, part of his overall effort to incorporate the Plains Indian point of view into his story.
Putting the history of broken treaties and broken promises front and center Andrist paints a portrait of Plains tribes struggling to maintain an identity and way of life -- a struggle that continues to today.

The Rise and Fall of the Acclimatization Movement.......2000-10-06
In this interesting and well researched book, Michael Osborne outlines the development of the acclimatization movement in France under the auspices of the Société zoologique d'acclimatation. Osborne focuses on the activities and goals of the Société from its origins in the mid-1850's to the outbreak of the Great War. In addition, he compliments his discussion of the Société's endeavors in Paris with significant examinations of acclimatization research in "Greater France," especially Algeria. Although at times it is difficult to pin down, the author's thesis claims that the success of acclimatization activities had been dependent upon economic and political variables and not scientific ones. Osborne supports this position by pointing out that the Société's zenith coincided the reign of Napoléon III, a time when it enjoyed patronage from the highest political echelons. At the same time, he shows that the acclimatization movement experienced a devastating decline immediately after the collapse of the Second Empire in 1871. First, Osborne reviews the roots of the Société and its birth in 1854. Its original concerns were to promote popular natural history, nurture the exotic animal industry, expand the French diet to include colonial foodstuffs and horse meat, and to encourage environmental conservation. He also defines acclimatization as the imprinting of an organism with "modifications which render it able to live and to perpetuate its species under new conditions of existence (Osborne, 2)." After explaining the origins of the Société, he provides an exhaustive chronology of its presidents beginning with its first, Isidore St-Hilaire. Osborne next offers a panorama of the tumultuous relationship between the Société and the Muséum National d'histoire naturelle. Despite the fact that the Société developed out of the Muséum's staff and projects, the two quickly became bitter rivals until the turn of the century. Osborne attributes the sour relations between the two entities to Napoléon III's dislike of the theoretical mission of the Muséum and his personal interest in the practical usage goals of the Société's research. He frequently indulged the Société at the expense of the Muséum. The connection between Napoléon III and the acclimatization movement is one of many political associations highlighted by Osborne. He also emphasizes the importance of the Société's links with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of War. He devotes substantial attention to the contributions of Charles de Montigny, a leading French diplomat in Asia. Montigny is described as the greatest of the Société's "naturalist-diplomats" and he was responsible for channeling many specimens to the Société's collections, such as Chinese bamboo, Tibetan yaks and hundreds more. At the same time, Montigny recruited over 60 new members in Asia as well as many high ranking international notables such as most of the monarchs of Europe, the King of Siam and even the Pope. Osborne also gives a brief biography of the Société's second president, Edouard de Lhuys, who was also a three term Minister of Foreign Affairs. De Lhuys is noteworthy because he cemented the organization's favor with the government. The connection between the acclimatization movement and political actors is clear. The next point of interest in the book is Osborne's discussion of the Jardin zoologique d'acclimatation in Paris. The Jardin was originally an arm of the Société, but the two drifted apart and became distinctly different entities following the Franco-Prussian War. The Jardin was intended to be a place for research and public education. At the same time, it was to demonstrate "living proof" of exotic animals' ability to adapt to living conditions in France. As interest waned in acclimatization after the collapse of the Second Empire, so did the scientific mission of the Jardin. Due to financial problems, the Jardin was plagued by angry stockholders who eventually succeeded in turning it into an amusement attraction by the 1880's. A significant reason for its downfall rests in the loss of political clout as a result of the demise of Napoléon III. Osborne devotes an entire chapter to the acclimatization endeavors in Algeria. Both the military and then colonial administrations relied on the Société's research and insight in developing Algerian agriculture. Many of the colony's leading figures, such as the Governor-General were active members of the Société. However, the Société's advice and activities ended in repeated failures, resulting in a decline in interest by the colonial administration. Osborne puts forth an intriguing argument over the course of the book. On the other hand, his emphasis on political factors in the decline of the Société is inflated. Political factors undoubtedly played a role in the upheaval experienced by the acclimatization movement following the Franco-Prussian War. However, the development and rise of plantation colonies and "factory-farms" is a more logical cause of decline and is seriously underestimated in the book. Both plantation colonies and "factory-farms" decimated the raison d'être of acclimatization research more than any change in the political winds. It is evident that Osborne selected excellent sources. Many of his citations are primary sources, consisting of letters, notes and reports written by the presidents of the Société, such as Isidore St-Hilaire. At the same time, he offers a lucid historiographical comparison showing how his book relates to other work on this topic. Throughout Nature, the Exotic and the Science of French Colonialism, Michael Osborne presents a thorough history of the Société zoologique d'acclimatation from its creation to the years leading up to the Great War. It is certain that the Société benefited greatly from its political connections and was badly wounded by their disappearance. However, it is only logical that the advent of plantation colonies, industrialization and "factory-farms" played a very important role in the demise of the acclimatization movement.
Book Description
This volume, the first in the New American West Series edited by Elliott West, explores Alaska's vast national park system and the evolution of wilderness concepts in the twentieth century. After World War II, Alaska's traditional Eskimos, Indians, and whites still trapped, hunted, and fished in the forests. Their presence challenged the uninhabited national parks and forced a complex debate over "inhabited wilderness." Focusing on three principal national parks--Glacier Bay, Denali, and Gates of the Arctic--the author explores the idea of "inhabited wilderness," which culminated in the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980. Among other units, the legislation set aside ten national parks, nine of which allow Alaska natives, whites included, "customary and traditional" subsistence use.
