Hmm, this is Manga??.......2003-01-31
Ok, not to sound to critical, but this is supposed to be an adaption from the Zoids series... it follows the storyline better than the NC0 one, and Ban is much cuter in this one, but there needed to be stricter adherance to the original storyline...
But those are my thoughts, otherwise it is fantastic!
CW: I liked it, but it is far more fun killing off Van..
Maelgwyn: Please leave my poor Ban alone, CW or Ill cook you up with any flames I get, muse. *groans* Why cant I get anther
A Great Book, But Kinda Short.......2002-08-10
In this book, a teenage boy, Van, his new-found partner zoid (a robotic animal with a will of it's own!), named Zeke, and a little capsule, which eventually will open up, go on a great adventure to stop Raven. Raven sets out to kill as many Zoids as he can. Although this book is b/w (black and white) it offers great depicted battle scenes. This book varies with the show which is on Cartoon Network weekly at 4:30. If you want a great cliff-hanging anime/manga book this is it! Written in English.
Finally A Zoids Manga.......2002-05-01
The first installment of the Zoids manga "Chaotic Century" tells the story of Van, a boy who wants to become a great Zoid pilot like his dad; and Zeke, a strange Zoid that befriends Van. Things turn nasty when a strange man in black appears, but you will have to read it to find out more. Overall this first installment was, although way to short to be called a manga in my opinion, a good read. If you like Zoids then you will like this manga. If not then you may want to seek a lenghier and more fulfilling read.

HOT! HOT! HOT!.......2004-06-06
I am a big fan of Ms. Salmansohn's books... After I read HOW TO BE HAPPY, DAMMIT and THE 8 MINUTES GUTS BUILDER...I started to look into her other books. This one is (like many of Ms. Salmansohn's books) both fun to read...and also very helpful. Basically it explains why (and how) to go about burning off your anger. You fill out the pages about the all the things that might make you angry and then you set them on fire. It really got me thinking about all the things I should be "letting go" of in my life. I recommend this book big time!

Cisco Catalyst switches, a common ingredient in many campus, metropolitan, enterprise, and service provider networks, are complex devices that require many configuration steps for proper operation. Not only are the required commands difficult to remember, but locating reference material on them also requires extensive research that is both time- consuming and difficult to complete in the field. Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration is a quick and portable reference guide to the most commonly used features that can be configured on Cisco Catalyst switches.
Derived from the authors' notes about how to configure a variety of Cisco Catalyst features during the course of their preparation for the CCIE(r) exam, Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration is an indispensable tool that helps you perform the most popular deployment tasks. From the first page, the authors zero in on quick facts, configuration steps, and explanations of configuration options in each Cisco Catalyst feature. The different variations of the Cisco Catalyst operating systems (COS and Cisco IOS(r) Software) are shown together for side-by-side comparison, making it easy to move from one Cisco Catalyst platform to another.
The book presents concise implementation advice for families of Cisco Catalyst features, including configuration fundamentals, Layer 2 interface configuration, Layer 3 interface configuration, VLANs and trunking, Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Layer 3 switching, multicast, server load balancing, access control, switch management, quality of service (QoS), and voice. Additional appendixes provide you with critical details on well-known ports and addresses, specialized switch modules, VLAN extension, and a cabling guide. The quick reference format allows you to easily locate just the information you need without searching through thousands of pages of documentation, saving you time and helping you to get the devices up and running quickly and smoothly.
Whether you are looking for a handy, portable reference to more easily configure Cisco Catalyst switches in the field, or you are preparing for CCNA(r), CCNP(r), or CCIE certification, you will find Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration to be an essential resource that will save you hours of research time.
Customer Reviews:
beginners level.......2006-03-05
I'm not writing this to discredit the book. I think it is very well done. I just think it should be made clear that this is a beginners level book. There is a lot of emphasis placed on translating cat os into native. There are also numerous examples of how to configure various topologies. I think it is very well done. However, anybody who can read and use the univercd, will have a wealth of knowledge, far beyond what can be contained in this book, within a few mouse clicks.
If you are familiar with only one of these operating systems and require knowledge of the other. This is a good buy. I always had trouble trying to interpret the logic used the catos. But, concerning gaining a deeper understanding of switching, I didn't get anything from this one.
A good book at showing Cat configs.......2006-02-03
CiscoPress's "Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration" by Hucaby and McQuerry is a very strong attempt at documenting the configuration implementations of Cisco switches. Any Cisco Switching book is going to need to make a decision as soon as the first page - and that is how best to document the two separate and totally different versions of Cisco Catalyst operating systems - COS and OS. This book takes a different tact - and one that I think works very well. Instead of splitting up the two OS domains and describing each in their own respective sections - the authors have decided to show how to implement both types of commands at the same time. This little difference is profound in the way it helps demonstrate the use of each command and eliminates redundancy found in other all-in-one switching books.
It is important to note that this is not a Switching-101 book. You definitely need a decent understanding of the various subjects - Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP), Virtual-Trunking Protocol (VTP), etc... The book does a good job at discussing the different implementations of Vlans and Trunking (Chapter 6).
One reassuring item to note is that I did not find any typos in the book. I have used this book while studying for my CCIE R&S lab (I think a lot of CCIE candidates forget that the `S' in R&S stands for Switching). I have also used this book for real-world implantations. I feel the utilitarian value of this book is much higher than Hucaby and McQuerry's similar book on Router configuration.
I give this book 4 pings out of 5:
!!!.!
Excellent Reference for Everyday Switch Administrators.......2003-11-09
I am a network engineer and use the Catalyst 2900, 2950, 3500 and the 4000's on a daily basis. We do a lot of VLAN configurations, trunking using 801.q, static port access, along with other various switch configs. This book has been indispensable for my daily routines. There has not once been an instant where I couldn't find the answer to what I was trying to accomplish when configuring a Cisco Catalyst Switch. This also gives you the commands for COS and IOS and also tells you which switch supports what and which switch doesn't (example: the Catalyst 2950 supports 801.q by default, where others support ISL by default). I highly recommend this book for all your switching administrative needs.
A must for Engineers.......2003-04-14
The author has put together a very clear and concise book which is essential for engineers. Whether using it as a reference or to read it cover to cover it is well worth the purchase. A+
Great Book!.......2002-11-24
This book covers 2900 Series up to 6000 Series Catalyst Switches including Catlayst 3500XL and 2900MXL Series. This book is not for CCNA wannabe's, cause it doesn't include Catalyst 1900 Series. Besides, you should know Cisco Switching before attempting to read this book. This book is more help on your day to day Cisco Catalyst administration job.
This book beats Cisco LAN Switching (CCIE Professional Development). It covers those topics that Cisco LAN Switching lacks - from Switch Functionality, SE Configuration, creating VLANs & Trunking, STP, Multilayer Switching, to QOS. More examples than LAN Switching.
This book, together with the Cisco Routers for IP Routing Little Black Book (by: Innokenty Rudenko) and Remote Access for Cisco Networks (by: William Burton and Bill Burton), your daily administration of Cisco devices will be easy as you have never imagined. Of course you need at least a CCNA Advanced Level or a CCNP level to use these three books.
I'm a CCNP/CCDA supporting Internet Data Centre / Internet Service Provider Core Routers/Distribution Switches/Access Switches and I found that this book is valuable to my daily administration tasks. I highly recommend this book for Cisco Catalyst administrators.
Book Description

Colts, and this new book covers all the details with a stunning amount of new information taken directly from archival sources. Heavily illustrated, and featuring important serial number data, this book will be a must-buy for all martial Colt collectors and historians of the Spanish-American War.
Book Description
What can the successes and failures of the twentieth century teach us about an uncertain future in the twenty-first? Bill Emmott argues that the best way to think about the future is to look back at the past, at the forces that have shaped our world and at what they tell us about the things that really matter. Two questions ultimately rise above all others: Will America continue to lead the world and to protect its peace? And will we continue to accept capitalism or will it be challenged once again? 20:21 Vision provides the answers that matter for all our lives in the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
worth reading, but becoming less relevant as years pass.......2005-10-03
I will summarize my thoughts briefly on Bill Emmott's book.
20:21 Vision begins as an entertaining read and keeps one's attention throughout the book, even to the post-logue. The book discusses two themes, the rise of Capitalism and its future, and the rise of America and its future. As you can imagine, Capitalism and America are tightly entwined, but Emmott's book also discusses capitalism's successes and failures in other countries and the effects of globalization.
Bill Emmott clearly has his biases. He is pro-globalization in the same was as Thomas Friedman. He believes globalization will build an inclusive world where all can participate in a free market. However, he does admit that government must play a role to make those free markets fair, and that even the free market of the US has governmental controls that work well. Bill also takes a balanced view to the environment. To me, it seemed rather optimistic to expect that market forces will choose to uphold environmental values or that there isn't as much risk to the environment as some believe. I suppose I'm just one of those environmental doomsayers, and Emmott admits he is an optimist in a chapter on 'Paranoid Optimism'. I would love to believe in his future-vision for globalization and the environment, but I find it all too rosy and unlikely.
His chapters on the cause of terrorism were well-founded. In addition, I enjoyed the lessons on economic ups and downs that are a part of Capitalism, as they help me understand why recessions/depressions happen.
Sadly, this book is already out of date in mid-2005, as any future-looking book will be. An particularly relevant example of the inability to predict the future was the mention that some environmental scientists believe that there could be more hurricanes if the temperatures of the ocean rise above 26 celsius. Emmott writes that the effect of ocean temperature on weather remains to be seen. In 2005, there were more hurricanes than any previous year, and the US was rocked by two major hurricanes back to back. Global warming is having an effect on US politics even while the administration denies its existence.
Extrapolation is a pessimist's crutch.......2005-07-04
That's the central point of this book by the editor of the Economist (the best newsmagazine in english). We cannot assume what afflicted us yesterday will necessarily afflict us tomorrow; the day after, and so on. That's the problem too many suffer from, and not just in today's world. It is a recurrent proclivity that people incline to, probably because it's the path of least intellectual resistance. Folks bemoan pollution, amongst other things, and extrapolate certain figures into self-perceived doomsday scenarios. The problem, according to Bill Emmott, is that too many people are more inclined to see the faults of capitalism than its benefits. It is the only system capable of responding to ever changing situations, stimuli, and new opportunities. Inherent in such a system, of course, is its destructive nature---competition is going to produce successes and failures; companies, industries even, will be eclipsed, over time, by other competing forces. It's a regenerative cycle; and not without painful effects. The job of governments, thus, is to mitigate such pain without overly stifling the system that gives rise to it---for it is this system of capitalism, warts and all, that is responsible for the phenomenal improvement in western societies and substancial gains almost everywhere else. While reading other reviewers of this book it struck me that many were, seemingly, not at all keen on "Capitalism" itself and thus were writing to criticize the system and/or Mr. Emmott for his (hedged) praise of it. The problem for such folks is that they want all the growth that capitalist market forces generate, but with none of the side-effects of it; as if one could have the results desired while removing the drive that creates such in the first place. Mr. Emmott, however, does believe we can mitigate some of the negative side-effects herein, but only that; to be too proactice with regulation and/or central planning is simply going to kill the golden goose, so to speak. Progess is not inevitable, but opportunity does exist---and not just for the part of the world that is already wealthy. And what accounts for the divide between the wealthy world and the poorer is that the former has actively embraced such opportunity. Our global sysyem is not a failure because all haven't shared in it equally. It has been remarkably successful actually, and not because of exploitation either. Colonialism and imperialism were not the cause of the West's success, as Dinish D'Souza has argued. They are the result of that success; thanks to the natural embrace of science and technology by capitalist systems. The system, in other words, is not loaded against any possible participants. Look at the achievements made by many previously dirt-poor states in Asia and---more recently---India, Brazil and Mexico. Embrace of market forces does work and is why states interested in growth eagerly wish to join the World Trade Organization. The idea that because the global economic system bears an American imprint it is an exploitative one, thus, is a canard. China, amongst others, did not embrace the WTO to be exploited. If anything, America is but an enabling power and is, moreover, "the first preeminent power in history whose ideas, if they triumph, would bring about the loss of its dominance." America, ie., wasn't hurt economically by enabling Japan & Germany to recover after WW2. Riches, after all, are not a zero-sum game: the pie grows biggger and bigger through increased globalization. Globalization equals a more stable world & a more stable world is possible as long as America remains engaged & remains willing to deal with threats to such a world. The author hopes, in addition, that more and more participating states will partake of the opportunity to embrace the free, market-driven world & break out of their ideological cul-de-sacs which heretofore have confined them to poverty. It's Bill Emmott's vision for the Twenty-first century. Cheers!
Mr. Emmott is bearish on China.......2005-06-24
I think Mr. Emmott is wrong to be bearish on China. Among those who are bullish on China are:
Thomas Friedman, the thrice-winner of the Pulitzer Prize from the New York Times, whose book THE WORLD IS FLAT shows why China is succeeding.
Jeffrey Sachs, the noted international economist, whose new book THE END OF POVERTY forecasts China to continue its incredible economic performannce well into the middle of the 21st century.
Joseph Stiglitz, the former World Bank economist, Clinton's chief economic adviser and Nobel Laureate in Economics whose books have nothing but praise for China's economic management.
Clyde Prestowitz, the former Reagan official, whose latest book predicts China will rule the world economy.
Jack Welch, the former chairman of GE, whose new book WINNING tells Americans to expect further triumphs of the Chinese and how to benefit from them.
Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft, who never ceases to be impressed by China's economic performance.
China.......2005-04-30
In his new book, WINNING, Jack Welch (of GE) says that when MBA grads sought his advice, he told them to pay attention to biotech, and to learn everything about China because this country will "permeate every aspect of business in their lifetimes." Bill Gates is quoted raving about China by Thomas Friedman in THE WORLD IS FLAT. And in THE END OF POVERTY Jeffrey Sachs plots a graph in which China continues to grow at this exponential rate well into the middle of the twenty-first century. So, while people like Bill Emmott belittles China, other people take a different view.
But it's not just a matter of "authority," whoever that is. Bill Emmott's views do not fit the facts. China is far from small. Its gross nominal GDP has just overtaken those of Britain and France and is now the world's fourth largest after the US, Japan, and Germany (from the latest CNN reports). Even if the pound jumps a few percentage points over the dollar, China is at least overtaking Britain and leaving it farther and farther behind. China's PPP is twice that of Japan. Its GDP growth rate is now estimated by the IMF to be in the 8-9% range, in line with estimates done by the UN, the World Bank, private research firms like CSFB, HSBC and Goldman Sachs - so we need not take the word of the Chinese government for it. This rate of growth is twice that of the US, and at least three times that of Europe. The IMF also estimates that China was responsible for 10% of the world's economic growth last year, just behind the US in overall impact. China controls the world's second largest foreign exchange reserves (after Japan's), not counting those of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Its trade performance now makes it the third largest trader in the world, after the US and Germany, and overtaking Japan since 2004. As of today China is America's third largest trade partner, according to the US Dept of Commerce (after Canada and Mexico) but Japan's largest trade partner, while the EU, the US, and Japan are China's largest, second, and third largest trade partners respectively. Its rate of growth in international trade may well make China the largest trade partner of both America and the EU, in addition to Japan, within a decade. Some recent reports already found China the largest trade partner of some South American countries (like Brazil), replacing the US. China is the world's largest producer of steel (according to the International Iron and Steel Institute), making more steel last year than America, Japan, and Germany put together. China is the world's largest consumer of steel, naturally. China is now the world's second largest consumer of oil (according to the Energy Information Administration of the US Dept of Energy), and is one of the key factors in the doubling of oil prices within the last couple of years. China is a major factor in the oil markets worldwide. China is also estimated to be running the second largest defense budget in the world, even though it is still many times smaller than that of the US (CIA).
The long-term outlook of China is favorable. China is not just some fad like the dot com mania that lasts just a couple of years and goes away. China has already been growing at a robust rate for the past quarter-century, and its long-term fundamentals are in place to sustain strong if not torrid pace for the next two decades, at least. By fundamentals we mean such things as savings rates, basic literacy rate, wireless communications, infrastructure, internet growth, age structure, birth-rate (China's population growth rate is lower than that of the US), and non-quantifiables like political stability, social cohesion, patriotism, the drive to succeed, and quite frankly plain greed (some of these non-quantifiables are reflected in the manned spaceflight program and in the Olympic Games performance). Nor is China exactly making a radical breakthrough: China is merely following upon the heels of success stories like Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The exact path which China is treading is not the same as these countries, but the destination is. China has no more "low-hanging fruits" to pick, but is relying now on the vast momentum of economic growth to overcome new problems like a shaky banking system and rural unemployment. In Jack Welch's colorful opinion, these problems are not mountains to climb but blips to be bulldozed by the economic growth and the sheer size of the economy which China has now grown to become.
Bill Emmott puts China's seeming success in historical perspective this way: "long-term decline followed by the revival of the last two decades." But his idea of "long-term" is just the last five hundred years. British historian J. M. Roberts sees it differently. He thinks the last few centuries are just an aberration in China's history. Who is more right? Roberts, because what Roberts has in mind is the fact that China was for some two millennia the world's most successful economy. In this long scale, the last few hundred years does seem what he calls "a temporary eclipse." Indeed, even after China fell behind the West in science and technology after 1500, the country continued to account for one-third of the world gross economic product up until the early 1800s. China's GDP in real terms is now at about 12% of the world GDP. And so even if China merely reverts to its historical impact, it still has a lot of room to grow in the future. And its pace will continue to be the envy of the world (and its major long-term downside will basically be the impact on the environment).
We can well understand that some people cannot stomach success (perhaps out of jealousy or racism). But you can't learn from your real or imagined rivals in this competitive world if you're in denial about the existence of this success in the first place.
Emmott claims China is peanuts in trade.......2005-04-19
The latest figures from the World Trade Organization show the following (in total exports and imports of both goods and services):
1. US - $2923.4 billion
2. Germany - $1949.3 billion
3. China - $1283.8 billion
4. Japan - $1248 billion
5. France - $1118.1 billion
6. UK - $1101.6 billion
In addition, China's trade growth jumped 36% last year, compared to about 10% for the world as a whole (which figure includes China's).
I don't know how any competent journalist can claim, as Emmott does, that China is peanuts in international trade, ranking behind the Netherlands (as he says in this book). The numbers show a very different picture. If any country is peanuts, it is Britain.
Emmott's doubts that China's GDP growth is real must be put in the same perspective. Indeed, in the light of such robust trade figures, verified bilaterally by other countries and finally by the WTO, it is difficult to see how China's real GDP growth can be as low as he seems to think.
Book Description
The California coast is one of the world's richest, most diverse habitats for intertidal marine life. It is also the site of one the world's greatest population concentrations and tourist destinations. Until now, the many millions of people living on and visiting California's coastline have gone without a guide to aid in exploring the abundant seashore life right under their noses. The Beachcomber's Guide to Seashore Life of California changes everything.
In a book that is as visually stunning as it is informative, Duane Sept dedicates full-colour photographs and thorough descriptions to each of the most common plants and animals to be found along the saltwater shores of California. Each entry includes the most useful common names for the species along with the scientific or Latin name; a description of its distinguishing physical features or behaviour; and information on its size, habitat and range. There are also sections on understanding tides and intertidal habitats, lists of the best beachcombing sites in California and tips on how to observe seashore life in an ecologically friendly manner.
Scientifically accurate, yet simple and straightforward in approach, The Beachcomber's Guide to Seashore Life of California is the perfect companion for every interested observer - the family or the school group, the Sunday beach-walker or the career naturalist.
Customer Reviews:
Good beachcomber resource.......2007-01-11
The photos in this book are incredible. I can't wait to take this to California on my next beachcombing experience. I like J. Duane's Sept's field guides. This is a good resource.

Book Description
This delightful guide divides the entire coast of California into specific marine habitats--sandy beaches, estuaries, bays, lagoons, and rocky intertidal zones. It then examines the unique features of each habitat, and identifies and describes the most common, conspicuous organisms that you are likely to find.
Customer Reviews:

Everytime I go beach combing and wonder what something is, I can find it with lots of great information about it in this book.
