    Book Description

JUST WHEN YOU thought you could take birdwatching seriously again, those freewinging funsters Ben, Cathryn, and John Sill have taken another laugh-out-loud look through their bizarro binoculars. The world of ornithology will never be the same. This time even the birdwatchers themselves aren't safe. In Beyond Birdwatching, the Sills have turned their wicked wit on the entire world of birdwatching in a hysterical parody of your favorite birding magazine. Beyond Birdwatching offers the familiar magazine features, but with a twist: " a crossword puzzle in which every answer is "bird" " an in-depth look at ornipsychology, the latest silly psuedo-science (Type T birds are thrill seekers, including the Western Surferbird, attracted by the call "surfs up, surfs up" " ads and reviews of such wish-we-had-'em tools for birding as Insta-Insects (freeze-dried bugs for your birdies--just add water!), Avian Aromas (draw birds to you with specially designed pheromones), and bifocal binoculars

Buy this book and laugh your head off or give it as a gift to any person you would wish to see with a laughed-off head. It's funny, actually... Plus, I can really recommend the one time magnification binoculars advertised in there, no more looking in the wrong side seeing everything so annoyingly small... Tea kettle tea kettle...

        Book Description

In a groundbreaking work of "New Americanist" studies, John R. Eperjesi explores the cultural and economic formation of the Unites States relationship to China and the Pacific Rim in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Eperjesi examines a variety of texts to explore the emergence of what Rob Wilson has termed the "American Pacific."

Eperjesi shows how works ranging from Frank Norris' The Octopus to the Journal of the American Asiatic Association, from the Socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason to the travel writings of Jack and Charmain London, and from Maxine Hong Kingston's China Men to Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon--and the cultural dynamics that produced them--helped construct the myth of the American Pacific. By construing the Pacific Rim as a unified region binding together the territorial United States with the areas of Asia and the Pacific, he also demonstrates that the logic of the imperialist imaginary suggested it was not only proper but even incumbent upon the United States to exercise both political and economic influence in the region.

As Donald E. Pease notes in his foreword, "by reading foreign policy and economic policy as literature, and by reconceptualizing works of American literature as extenuations of foreign policy and economic theory," Eperjesi makes a significant contribution to studies of American imperialism.

Where would graphics professionals be without Visual QuickStart Guides like Photoshop 7 for Windows & Macintosh? Economically priced, they offer a lot of bang for your buck--hundreds of screen shots, all precisely annotated, step-by-step instructions for virtually every feature and menu, numerous insightful tips and sidebars, reference pages filled with keyboard shortcuts, a thorough index for pinpointing just the right problem area, and much more.

This latest entry is one of the best. The authors have the ability to clearly articulate what each tool and feature does, why you might want to use it, and how it works, all in a concise form--usually in eight steps or less. However, perhaps due to the multitool versatility of Photoshop, this QuickStart Guide may not the best starting point for all beginners. These are not tutorials that take you from simple ingredients to complex outcomes. Instead, the authors put the tools in your hands and help you discover what you can do with them on your own images. An analogy would be that this book is like a great car manual, but not necessarily the driving lessons. You have a problem in a project, look up the appropriate keywords in the index, and apply the steps to work out a solution.

For the experienced user, this is a fabulous reference to have on hand. (Especially those Mac users who've upgraded, since most screen shots are from OS X.) It takes readers through all the many parts of Photoshop: color management; resolution; making selections; compositing (moving, copying, sharpening and blurring, cloning, and more); using layers; the history palette (including using snapshots and the history brush); adjustment layers; working with color (including levels and curves and the spot color channel); painting; blending; masks; paths; type; filters; actions; preparing images for print or for exporting to other applications; optimizing for the Web; and making slices, rollovers, and animations. And new features have a "7.0!" call-out--for example, the new File Browser or the Healing Brush and the Patch tool, to quickly bring you up to speed with version 7.0. --Angelynn Grant

            Book Description

Adobe Photoshop is one of those programs that both dazzles and dismays: You can do extraordinary things with it--as long as you don't get lost in its maze of palettes and toolbars. Luckily for you, with Photoshop 7 for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide,, that needn't be a problem! If you're ready to take on image editing in Photoshop 7, this straight-ahead visual reference is the place to start.

Veteran authors Elaine Weinmann and Peter Lourekas are back with a completely revised edition of the guide that's become the standard for Photoshop instruction in classrooms, homes, and offices. Through clear, concise instructions and a multitude of screen shots, this book steps you through the basics of photo editing, manipulation, optimization, and correction. It also provides complete coverage of all that's new in version 7: native Mac OS X support, a new painting engine that facilitates wet and dry brush effects, and more--all in a task-based format that constantly reminds you of where you are in the program and what you're trying to accomplish.

            2 out of 5 stars Layout...??.......2006-02-18

This book, as well an several other Peach Pit Press books, did a great job of immediately losing my interest. The layout doesn't seem to flow from one section to the next. It seems like the author thought of a new topic at random, and dumped that information in the book with no consideration for logical order. In general, it seems that most of the Peach Pit Press books that I've read follow this "shuffling of information" approach.

1 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2005-12-05

This book is not for beginners. Very confusing and poorly written.

I don't know if it makes a good reference because I'm new to Photoshop, but I do know one thing, this book does not teach a beginner anything.

            I am taking it back.

OK you're still using PS7 and want to get up to speed.
You want all the technical details and tips and even some background on print design.
You want a couple of exercises and clear examples.
You want to go from beginner to a confident intermediate level.
And you want a shelf reference to PS7.

2 out of 5 stars It's mostly black and white.......2004-11-19

How can you do a great Photoshop book in black and white? Turns out, you can't. There is a lot of good reference material here, but it doesn't connect very well. And the full color section at the middle of the book that you would expect to have the color versions of some of the examples had artwork from a variety of artists.

I recommend O'Reilly's Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One instead.

            1 out of 5 stars What a mess.........2004-03-05

                Book Description

The Lebanese civil war has made the study of Lebanon a difficult endeavor. The complexity of Lebanese society is the result of a unique political system and a richly diverse populace. This volume will help those who wish to delve beyond the superficial journalistic accounts of Lebanese society and culture. Entries encompass information about various subject areas, including political leaders, poets, artists, actors, writers, musicians, singers, important events and places, political parties, militia groups, foreign interests, and military elements. It is important to note that this dictionary does not exclude women, as is often the case with historical works on Lebanon. It escapes the narrow confines of a male-gendered history of Lebanon. Many of the personalities presented in this text are not presently known to English readers, and the volume easily bridges the widening gap between Arabic and English approaches to the study of Lebanese history. It also offers crucial information about rarely discussed issues such as AIDS, homosexuality, and prostitution, and delineates the ethnicities that exist in the country, making clear the balances of power that propelled Lebanon into civil war and dragged it back toward peace again. The volume includes an extensive bibliographic section with sources in Arabic, English, French, and German. An essential volume on a country that has occupied center-stage in the last decade of Middle Eastern politics.

1 out of 5 stars A subjective and pugnacious reference work..........2005-10-28

As Hilal Khashan, of the American University of Beirut said: AbuKhalil explains his goal: to "provide essential information in order to grasp the realities of an exceedingly complex country and, in passing, to dispel some myths and illusions." Sounds like he will provide (p. ix).authoritative and even-handed definitions and avoid the divisions that continue to mar Lebanese life. Were it only so! Instead, his dictionary is riddled with assertions and accusations that insult the reader and Lebanon alike.

AbuKhalil freely derogates those whom he dislikes. Kamil al-As'ad, the most powerful southern Lebanese leader of the 1960s and 1970s, comes off as a politician "known for his indulgence in earthly pleasures and for his contempt of the very Shi'ite peasants he ostensibly represented." Sulayman Franjiyyah, president of Lebanon during 1970-76, is an "uneducated Maronite." AbuKhalil's entry on the Beirut Arab University announces that its "quality of teaching is considered low, and its graduates are not favored in employment."

Many entries do not even minimally contribute to the understanding of "an exceedingly complex country" but deal with such subjects as agriculture, Beirut International Airport, and a mental asylum. Amusing entries abound on such Lebanese dishes as kibbi, qawarma, and tabbulah. But then, why did he leave out shawarma, humus tahini, and baklava?

AbuKhalil displays negligence; the entry on Tawfiq Yusuf `Awwad (1911-?), a literary figure killed by a Syrian shell in 1989, finds a question mark by the writer's year of death. Shouldn't a dictionary writer look up something so elementary? Ilyas Sarkis, Lebanese president during the 1976-82 period, died vaguely in the "1980s," not in 1985. Errors of fact abound: the Muslim conquest of Lebanon in the seventh century, he rewrites as "Arab." He miss-labels the moderate, Association of Islamic Charitable Projects as "fundamentalist." He provides a population figure for Beirut in 1996 (the 407,403) that is mysteriously lower than the 1975 figure (475,000). He asserts that Ely Salem, a politician and academician, completed his graduate work at the University of Cincinnati, whereas it really was at the University of Indiana.

Abu Khalil's work does not dispel "myths and illusions" but, to the contrary, it represents a setback for scholarship. The last thing this country tormented by political divisions needs is a subjective and pugnacious reference work. But that's what it got.

Would you believe that you can turn a TV set into a copier machine? Burn a candle underwater? Give artificial respiration to a fly? Create a square egg? Turn a grape into a fireworks display? You can!

You Gotta Try This! is packed with fifty safe, hands-on science experiments that seem too incredible to be true -- but are. And they're so much fun to perform that you'll be trying them out again and again.

Written by Vicki Cobb and Kathy Darling, the award-winning authors of Don't Try This at Home! and four other best-selling children's science books, this high-energy activity book helps you discover just how amazing -- the world of science can be.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful treat from Vicki Cobb!.......2007-08-06

I don't know the authors, but I can't say enough about how fun and inspiring these books are for children - I recommend them to homeschoolers all the time. I wish I'd had books like this when I was little - my son had a ball with them, and they got him reading far more than he would have otherwise. I can see that the reviewer who had an unfortunate experience must have been under a lot of stress when she wrote the review, but I hope the family referred back to the book later and had some fun with it. I'd suggest that people take advantage of the cool feature Amazon offers where they can "look inside" or "search inside" the books and see for themselves what fun there is to be found in them!

5 out of 5 stars Blood on Your Hands and Code Red.......2002-04-29

What a fun and easy way to encourage science for those of us who are "scientifically challenged!" Just a note: in my area Kinko's does NOT carry the Wausau Papers Astrobrights Galaxy Gold. They do carry other colors, but since Galaxy Gold was specified in these two experiments, I did not purchase another color. Did find it at Office Max. The "Blood on Your Hands" worked great and was really fun! Have tried "Code Red" twice unsuccessfully. Any suggestions? I really want this to work!

I am very sorry that the woman who tried to do the project we called "Flameless Fire" failed to get the expected results and condemned the entire book for it. I can assure you that it does work and I have used it in many teacher inservices. Perhaps she didn't mix in enough oxygen. In any case, the experiments I put in my books have been tested by me. But they are not "fool-proof" recipes. Conditions vary and often people don't follow directions. I also intend these experiments to be the beginning of an adventure into science, not just solve a problem for a kid who needs to fulfill an assignment.

                    1 out of 5 stars handwarmer didn't work.......2001-04-04

My daughter age 9 wanted to be in the school science fair. So we looked at books from the library and picked "You Gotta Try This" because of the handwarmer experiment. We tried several times and the only warmth we got was from wishful thinking, plus a big black mess from smashing charcoal. Maybe we did something wrong, but I was hoping for something foolproof. Now we gotta think of something else in 2 weeks. HELP--PLEASE!
