Mechanized monsters populate this edgy work by a manga master.
Customer Reviews:
Matsumoto continues to work on his masterpiece...........2003-05-16
I love Matsumoto's work. Maetel is one of my all-time favorite characters, as is her friend (and in the movie "Maetel Legend", her sister) Emeraldas. Harlock is...interesting, but kinda cool. Tetsuro, well...he's okay.
The plots are incredible! They really make you think (and I'm not just talking about the blurbs at the end of each segment!). There are very few manga that can do that.
I reccomend this series to any and every anime/manga fan!
This is good, but I feel as though I am missing something..........2003-04-16
I have liked GE 999 ever since I started readng it in Animerica magazine. So, I got this book, but discovered that this is actually the *sequel* to the *first* adventure of Maetel and Tetsuro. I got this information from the biographies of the characters and the clues in the story. As a result of not havign read the first series, I am a tad bit lost. Can someone tell me WHY they chose to publish the sequel in English before they translated the first series? It doesn't make any sense!
Anyway, the characters are fun and I enjoy their adventures. But the blurb at the end of every chapter is too deep and confusing for me to understand.
I like this, and I will look up the first series--right after I find out who started this translating mess in the first place.
Galaxy Express: The Greatest Manga Ever!!.......2001-02-15
In the distant fututre, ayoung boy named Tetsuro steals a boarding pass to a train called the Three-Nine. After emabarking, he meets a woman named Maetel, who bares a striking resembelance to his deceased mother. A grand journey begins that will take Tetsuro to the edge of the universe and back. He will meet many friends and enemies in his journey of wonder.
Buy this book!.......2000-10-30
Despite the artwork which will turn off fans of superhero-style comic books, Galaxy Express has a style unto its own that needs to be appreciated by a more mature reader. The story is excellent, the social commentary is superb, my only problem is the SLOW release schedule. This book easily ranks equally alongside the other great (translated) mangas of our times, including Nausicaa, Lone Wolf and Cub, Dominion, and Adolf... Buy this book!
DAMN it's good!.......2000-06-16
Here's a summery of the 18 volumes, NO spoilers^_~
"You think Tetsuro Hoshino has seen the last of the Gallaxy Express? Starting where the 2 part movie left off, Maetel sets Tetsuro back on the path to Manhood (NOTE, he is VERY young) & the trail of goals, making new friends & discovering the ones he'd thought gone, learning the harsh lessons of reality in the endless sea of stars. Mysteries come to light, only to be darkened by a new challenge or question or an old memory, & the entire gallaxy asks only of Tetsuro to survive & NEVER to forget.
Leiji Matsumoto, the creator, is second in popularity only to Hayao Miyazaki (Kiki, Totoro, Laputa, Lupin), & has one many awards for his interconnecting series.
This is one the whole family should watch because it's sincere, complex, inovative, provocative, dramatic, & contemplative above everything else. It's a helluva good story/plot that makes you think about the facts of life & its challenges. It has nothing corny or cliche, a literary masterpiece(despite the craappy artwork). It teaches about achieving goals, following hopes & dreams & beliefs, finding ones purpose in life, & keeping promises.
Personally, I wouldn't trade MY collection if you offered me 3 times what the whole set is worth^o^
His writings are like.......Pringles. "Once you pop, you can't stop."

Laughing as you go.......2002-09-12
There's only one thing worse than a new convert to science fiction--you know the type, 30 years old and just now reading Dune and Stranger in a Strange Land and Foundation for the first time and blathering on about it like they had just discovered God. No, there's only one thing worse than such a person, and that's a new convert to anything else. So let me confess this now and get it off my chest before I quit breathing--I'm in love with travel books. Oh, it may be an infatuation. I think of those radio dedications like "To John, we've only been together for a week, but I know that it's love, and that we'll be together for the rest of our lives." Right now, however, it feels, smells, and tastes like love, so who am I to try and avoid the conclusion? Travel books, you say, you mean like Let's Go: Europe 1990. By your very words you commit the unpardonable sin of not understanding just who my elusive new mistress is, a problem which I must remedy at once.
But I have to admit, like the new convert, that I don't know much. What may seem wonderful and new to me, you may have had read to you on your mother's lap. So be it. There are so many more of you out there that this can't help but be. Instead, I'll write this like I wish someone would have written to me about a year ago (or even earlier), and if it suffers for a lack of knowledge, well, then, I will cringe along with you when I reread it a few years hence. S.J. Perelman writes about travelling like the above was written about reading: a lot of style which attempts humor (some working, some not), telling you more about the writer and very little about the subject. I found it interesting, but you may not.

Book Description
The Najdorf Sicilian (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6) is the most important, popular, and talked about opening in chess. Its name is synonymous with such luminaries as Tal, Fischer, and Kasparov.
As would be expected by the preceding three names, Black plays soundly for a win, with a full-scale battle developing with no scope for drawish simplifications. The Najdorf includes many famous variations that have practically made players' careers, such as the Poisoned Pawn, the Polugaevsky Variation, and the Gothenburg Variation, introduced disastrously as a team weapon by Argentine players against Soviet Grandmasters in 1955.
Kasparov has relied on the Najdorf in all of his World Championship matches. But not only World Championships hinge on the Najdorf, it has proven itself in millions of games as the ideal work-horse for club and tournament players. In this comprehensive book GM Nunn covers all of its variations in detail.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference for the Najdorf after 6.Bg5.......1998-08-22
John Nunn's newest reference work on the Najdorf covers all positions after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5. This edition expands significantly on his previous Najdorf work published in the mid-80's. In the ever-changing world of the Najdorf, it is essential to have the latest reference for any player rated above 2000. If you want to play the 6.Bg5 lines, then you need this book. John Nunn sets the standard that others are measured by when it comes to opening books. His works are full of original analysis and useful tidbits. Sometimes he does profess to enjoy a certain line over another and is not very clear on why (example: the Nb3 line of the Poison Pawn variation of the Sicilian), but generally he backs everything up with convincing comments.
A comprehensive guide for the tournament player.......1997-10-01
John Nunn has obviously put a lot of effort in writing an up-to-date comprehensive manual for an opening where theory is constantly in the making and ignorance can spell disaster. This is no small feat as he went through 18.000 games to produce this book on the aggressive 6.Bg5 continu- ation. We await the "sequel" where the rest of the variations will be discussed with great anticipation! All of you who feared sharp openings such as the Najdorf can now fearlessly wade through the main lines thanks to this book. A must for the tournament player who wishes to include the Najdorf Sicilian in his or her opening reper- toire.(in memoriam Miguel Najdorf) George Baltzopoulos
Just a correction on your catalog's description.......1997-08-27
The "Complete Najforf" has the wrong "Book Description," e.g., "The Dutch (1.d4 f5) is a superb weapon..."

Not wath Iwas expecting.......2007-02-06
It's like an old book. I was waiting for more on Solaris 10.
Great book for New or Old System Administrators.......2006-06-08
The breadth and depth of knowledge in this book is amazing.
I've been a unix admin for 12 years and bought the first edition
quite some time ago. It still sits within reach and I often
carry it back and forth to work as it's that useful. I highly
recommend this book for those who like a practical hands-on
approach. If you are looking at if for one thing you're
interested in (jumpstart for example), buy it. The other
topics in there are so well written that they will perk your
interest. If you really want to get into the nuts and bolts
of say, jumpstart, just download the free pdf's from sun's
site (sun has several pdf's of 300-700 pages on jumpstart alone).
Uh wow: Written by an true experienced solaris admin.......2005-10-19
This book is amazing as its not a rehash of points you need to know about to pass the Solaris Certified Sys Admin exam. Instead this is a true to life list of common issues/solutions a REAL sys admin would face in day to day work. The basics of hardware is fantastic and I wish I had this info at the start of my career. Webflash/jumpstart.. fantastic and now part of my server environment. NIS ... fantastic...... DYnAMIC RECONFIGURATION! VOLUME MANAGEMENT!!! This is a True System Adminstrator's Book. Note this won't help you pass to SCSA as if you need to read up on the format of the /etc/passwd file then this book is not for you.
If you are interviewing for a Solaris admin job... get this book!!! Forget any of the exam cram or study guides for the SCSA as its all BS.
A+!!!!
Good book, but needs errata on wiley site........2005-08-20
I think the second edition of the book is fine, except for a couple of errors in the script examples. Although the errors seem trivial there should be an errata published on Wiley's website showing the corrections.
Great Book for Solaris Beginners.......2005-08-01
This is a very good book for people who know other flavors of Unix and is just starting to work on Solaris. The authors give good examples and real applications and time saving tips so you don't have to waste your time since they already went through that experience !!!

Book Description
The third volume in the "timely and ambitious" (Boston Book Review) New Press Postwar French Thought Series. Since 1945, the innovative approaches of a group of French scholars have profoundly altered the study of classical antiquity. Drawing on work in anthropology, religion, psychology, philology, and the new history, Antiquities offers major critical texts that have transformed the field of classics in the last half century. With seminal essays by Louis Gernet, Jean-Pierre Vernant, Pierre Vidal-Naquet, Nicole Loraux, Marcel Detienne, and their colleagues (many newly translated for this volume), Antiquities provides a rich perspective on society, politics, myth, gender, literary genre, and everyday life in the ancient world. An introduction and extensive notes explore the impact of a range of disciplines on these influential classicists' thinking.
Book Description
While historians have tended to accord the Celts a place of minor significance in comparison to the Romans, The Celts firmly aligns the Celtic peoples as the primary European precedent to the Greco-Roman hegemony, restoring this culture to its true importance in the development of European civilization. An expert in Celtic studies, Markale regards myth as a branch of history, and explores mythological material to reveal the culture that gave rise to it. The alternative historical vision that emerges is both convincing and exciting.
⢠One of the most comprehensive treatments of Celtic civilization ever written.
⢠A cornerstone of Western civilization and the major source of its social, political, and literary values, Celtic civilization occupied the whole of Western Europe for more than a millennium.
⢠Unlike the Middle Eastern forerunners of the Greco-Roman world, Celtic civilization is still alive today.
Customer Reviews:
Celts.......2007-04-08
This book was not at all what I thought it would be. Way too much mythology and not nearly enough real history (much less archaeology-not that you ever find much of that in these types of book), and even the few slivers of real history are still thoroughly laced with myths and speculations. The book does not put enough focus on the Gauls, and virtually ignores the Celt presence in the Classical world outside Gaul. Overall, a very strange book. For someone looking for information on who the Celts were or what they did, there are many better books out there.
Good overview of Gaulish Celts.......2005-10-27
I have a strange liking for books by Jean Markale. No matter what strange tangents my spiritual/historical leads me on, Arthurian, Celtic, Cathars, Jean Markale seems to have a book on it. On some weird level, he and I must think and wonder in the same ways and so I find his books fascinating.
One thing to note about Markale that you should remember before reading him and that is he is described as a poet, philosopher, historian and storyteller and this must be kept in mind when reading him. His scholarship seems good, but his creative mind takes him places that no strict historian would travel. Nonetheless, he is a good read and a writer that makes you think with his very intelligent style of writing.
That being said, I enjoyed this book for its somewhat Gaulish focus on Celtic deities, worship and history (and the subject seems to be prioritized in that order). This book is one of many of Markale's great tomes.
Perhaps the worst book on the Celts I have ever read.......2005-04-05
Overly pedantic yet having sparse foot notes the author makes many statements without backing them up with their sources and the material noted in the bibliography is woefully outdated.
It is not only overly pompous but reads as though it written by someone with their own personal ax to grind. And when the author trys to present factual material many of what is presented as fact runs contrary to other Celtic scholars whose credentials are far more extensive. (such as the reasons for the Saxon invasions, and when the author describes the Saxon invasion of Britain there is never again a mention of the Romans).
Ancient Celtic art, my humble opinion some of the most beautiful art mankind has ever created, is both barely mentioned and when it is disparaged. The Hallstatt period is barely mentioned and when it is the dates of the period are wrong! (this is both important and basic information).
And yet there are many "sins of omission" of factual material. There is too much time spent on myth while barely skimming the surface when it comes to archeological evidence as well as classical Mediterranean sources.
There is also a great amount of picking and choosing by the author such as concentrating on just several tribes and forgetting the rest.
A great amount of arcane history is detailed in some parts whereas other significant parts of the history of the Celts are totally neglected. The book is a mess as it jumps around from Freud to Jung to ancient Greek philosophers (even Cocteau is brought into the mix) and wastes much time on dubious philosophical musings and half baked psychological interpretations by the author.
It reads as both being bombastically scholarly yet smacks of New Age philosophy.
Not recommended - especially for the beginner.
the power of myth.......2003-07-12
It seems that the quest of this book by Markale is to explain the Celts through the power of their myths. Noble goal, indeed, and Markale succeeds in describing the history and the emmense influence the Celts had on Western Europe...even by today's standards.... a great deal of which he does by recalling mythical incidents. His history, as always, is nearly flawless, unbias, and interesting.
But I got somewhat bored with Markale's constant comparisons of Celtic myth figures to Biblical and Greco-Roman figures. Back in the days of Charles Squire this may have been necissary, but I found it tedious in this work. Not just tedious, but irrelevant and not slightly irritating.
If you can get past the many subtle personal commentary and criticism, the work has great merit. Markale is a notable historian and I especially recommend his work "The Druids".
The Celts: Uncovering the Mythic and Historic Origins of Wes.......2001-08-16
Jean Markale's The Celts is a must. It is one of the most informative books on the Celts that I have ever read. Along with his King of the Celts, Women of the Celts, and Merlin, one is transported into that world of the Celts to find what beautiful, intelligent, magnificent people they were. The amount of research and sources in his books is truly unbelievable. These books are very close to my heart.
