Maybe I was unclear as to what I was buying (into?) here, but this book was a real disappointment.

Truly little, with fairly juvenile humour, as far I'm concerned this book is only suitable for toilet-side reading material or, if really stuck, a stocking filler. But giving it a miss altogether would not leave a huge gap in your life.

I bought this book, based on the two reviews that had been posted here, to give to a freind that practices Feng Shui. Thank God I read it first. Feng Shui IS funny and would make a great subject for a truly funny book. The book, Wrong Shui, is not that book. In other words, the concept of a funny book about Feng Shui is great. Through lack of finesse this book simply offends.

A book that stands the test of time.......2006-11-28

It stood the test of time for me anyway, since I used to read this book in bed every night when I was about 14 or 15 and marvelled not only at the world of the Beatles but at the way that Schaffner's words opened up a realm of ideas whose breadth I could only intuit at the time. I just finished rereading the book again, 25 years later, and it still strikes me as elegantly written, passionate, honest, insightful and at times very humorous. (The way he speaks about McCartney's solo career is particularly funny). In 1977, he wrote, "As usual the wild card of the lot is John Lennon."

I think this is the book about the Beatles we all wish we had written. My copy is in tatters, and has a torn-up dust-jacket with the Rubber Soul fish-eyed lens photograph. I will never part from it!

Gestalt Beatles.......2005-05-17

I have loved this book for years. Nick Schaffner has done a superb job of sharing his personal love for the Beatles from both an objective and subjective standpoint. Not only does he make personal references in re the Beatles, he also details the history of the band and the recordings they had released up until this book was published. Certain references, such as the Beatles' hair length being comparable to then-president Jimmy Carter (1976-80) are what "dates" this work; other than that, this excellent book is a timeless classic.

When I was in the 9th grade, I wrote a paper on the breakup of the Beatles entitled "The Gestalt Beatles: The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts" and smile today as I think of how much I wanted to be a paperback writer. There is no doubt that Mr. Schaffner has inspired countless hordes of fans in this manner. I think of my old term paper because the writing in this book is greater than the sum of its parts - the combination of objectivity and subjectivty make for a very well rounded presentation indeed!

I had the pleasure of meeting Nick Schaffner at a Beatles' convention and he graciously autographed my copy of this book. He also shared stories about the Beatles and offered words of solace to fans still mourning John's death. This book deserves a place of honor and is a must-have for the avid Beatles' fan. Please read this book and share it with somebody. You will be glad that you did.

A Labor Of Love.......2000-04-25

This book must have taken Nicholas Schaffner all his energy to write. It's a wonderful account of the lads music from their rise to fame in 1964 to their solo careers in 1977. Schaffner cares most about the music and he definetely knows his stuff. He's not escatic about Sgt. Pepper, which is an overated album, and he mentions a forgotten George Harrison masterpiece, "It's all too Much". Schaffner writes in a dry witty factual style focusing on the Beatles albums, their influence on rock music, the ups and downs of their solo careers, and anaylizes their lyrics. There are pictures of all the Beatles singles and rare pics of the beatles infamous butcher cover. This is my favorite Beatle book.

Getting into Shapes.......2005-12-08

In the current Digital Age, the world can be explained as a sequence of 1s and 0s. Simplification must be reassuring, otherwise why would some silly ad by the Ad Council tell us that the human body is 70% water? In geometry even the most complex shapes are said to be functions of circles, squares and triangles.

Not so according to the Chinese, inventors of gun powder, kung fu and qi qong, who have their own way of unraveling the rich tapestry of life into simpler elements. With the tangram, which surfaced about 200 to 300 years ago, all shapes or "silhouettes" - 1,600 of which are presented in this book and "game" - are made of seven pieces: five triangles, a square, and a rhomboid. Following the examples in the book, the "player" will be able to arrange them not only into geometric designs, but also into images of plants, animals, humans, and maybe even your late Aunt Nettie.

At first glance "playing tangram" may look like an easy pastime for children from age 6. However, "reading," that is properly interpreting and then building the shapes actually takes a lot of patience. Tangram is an ideal solitary activity for adults marooned on a rainy day. Exercising the mind and solving the puzzles is guaranteed to keep you sharp and promises to prevent old Mr. Altzheimer from visiting too early. This game provides excellent training for eye-brain coordination, and in Europe close to one million tangram books have been sold in the past two decades.

One word of caution though: this game is highly addictive. Should you decide that this is the perfect gift for a child, consult with its parents or legal guardians first. And remember, when it comes down to it, we are all just the visible manifestations of zeros and ones - with a lot of H2O thrown in.

Brain stimulating game.......2003-09-08

I had been on the lookout for some sort of "game" that would help me work on and re-develop better spatial and visual memory skills among other things. I had had a serious head injury in a car accident in 1979, and suffered some "difficulties" as a result. Rehabilitation with a cognitive psychologist at U.of I. in Chicago, IL, started Oct.2002, made me "aware" of the potential for tracing new neural pathways doing work such as with the tangrams. I found the book absolutely marvelous. It has the solutions, which were VERY HELPFUL, and key to my buying the set, and it was PORTABLE, something important for someone who takes buses a lot like I do. I found the history and inmense variety of puzzles really interesting and quite challenging for me. I am tremendously grateful to the authors for having published such a book, for a)including the ANSWERS, b) including diagrams which show very clearly how all of them form one piece, and for the tremendous number of different puzzles. The set has proved to be a "boost" in helping my brain re-learn and re-develop the skills somewhat "damaged" in the car accident. An excellent, excellent buy!!!

Not very interesting.......2001-12-15

It's not a good book. OK, the introduction is very enlightening.
But the convex tangrams are not interesting(56 pages)!
The figures are given without names. Some pages are almost empty
with a single figure.
The others books i have are more interesting.
The "Tangram (Scholastic Discovery Box)" also by the same author
is more attractive!

GREAT MIND SHAPING GAME.......1999-07-02

This game is wonderful. I skipped the philosophy in the book and got straight to the puzzles. Several shaped pieces have to be formed into the solid shape they give you on the page. We go back and do some of the puzzles over and over again because there are SO MANY (like several hundred) puzzles to start with that you never get it mastered. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the book, too. Great gift for the engineer or other visual puzzle person.

Best visual logic book on the market.......1999-03-04

The TangramBook by Joost Elffers shows you the logic of the visual language and the way you can think without words. Best used before the age of 11 but its magic works at all ages.

Great for the expert mindstorms developer.......2004-07-02

This is a very well written book. You can tell from the text that Mr. Sato is an expert at Mindstorms.

Unfortunately, the book covers chapter after chapter of project parts and programming code that do not ship with the $200 LEGO Mindstorms: Robotics Invention System 2.0 718 piece kit. If you are really into Mindstorms and want to hand-code your programs outside the supplied GUI interface using downloaded languages, this is a great book. But, if you just purchase the Robotics Invention System 2.0 kit, then this book is not going to help much unless you download more software from non-lego web sites, and purchase even more lego hardware. I returned the book.

GET THIS BOOK!

I've been waiting for this book for a few months now and I must say it was well worth the wait -- even if all you want to do is to build MIBO. Jin Sato really is the master, and it's alot easier to have him tell you how to build MIBO than it is to figure it yourself. It's quite a complicated model but an amazing challenge. The introductions to the various software are great too, and it's great to see things through Sato's eyes.

Most Helpful Resource I've Found.......2007-08-13

This is an outstanding book! It brings together information on so many aspects of a search for WWII information it has become invaluable to me. I found the most helpful aspects included the many full color pictures, the charts of organization, and the explanations of the many documents I found in my father's papers. Some of the sample documents and forms were small reproductions and did require a magnifying glass to see clearly but the information was so helpful, I didn't mind. The book also gives clear information on where various documents are located and how best to access those sources. Having this book months ago would have saved me hours of time.

My only disappointment is that there is no index. When I go back to the book to refresh myself on a topic, it is not always easy to find what I am looking for through the Table of Contents. I would hope any future editions would include a good index. That one complaint aside, I think this is an excellent book and I would recommend it highly for anyone searching for records.

Everyone who wants to know what their relatives did in WWII, this is the book. It has amazing clarity, pictures, scanned documents with explantions, unit histories, etc. Wish I had this book a few years ago. What took me months to figure out, this book had it all.

Finding Your Father's War - An Excellent Reference Guide.......2007-01-01

Jonathan Gawne's latest book "Finding Your Father's War" follows in the tradition of outstanding military reference books authored by this hard working researcher and historian including his Normandy Campaign benchmark reference guide "Spearheading D-Day", and easily will be become his most successful general interest work. The text and illustrations are clear, easily followed, and apply directly to assist anyone who is interested in researching a family member, friend or veteran's Service to his or her country during World War Two. Each section walks the reader through different research and documentation sources so as to allow one to become fluent in the often confusing and jargon heavy military records and in the end be able to reconstruct an overview of Service from available sources. The quality of the publication is excellent with the color pictures and illustrations numerous and sharp, while the text typeset is easy on the eyes. Casemate has done an excellent job in putting this book together, and has done justice to the quality of the author's work. Plus at a very reasonable price unlike many military books which are often priced out of the range of the average reader, this should be an outstanding success for both the author and publisher. Bravo to both for doing such a great job!

An Amazing Amount of Information.......2006-11-12

The sheer amount of detail in this book is amazing. I was in the army, and I've been a student of military history for more years than I like to remember, but there was a very large amount of information in this book that I hadn't seen before.

Example: There is on page 41, a color picture of the shoulder patch for FUSAG, the First US Army Group. OK a shoulder patch isn't unusual. But FUSAG was the fictious army that General Patton commanded in an attempt to confuse Hitler. Did anybody wear these patches? Were they worn by a few just on leave to 'prove' that the unit existed.

In addition to a description of the Army as it existed at that time, (No Marines or Navy in this book.) this book goes into great detail about how to find records, how to identify any momentos the serviceman might have kept, and web sites that are dedicated to preserving the history of particular units.

This book is beautifully printed, mostly in color on high quality paper, somewhat of a surprise to see in a paperbound book.

An Essential and Must Have Resource!.......2006-10-24

Incredibly, American World War II veterans are dying at a rate of between 1200 and 1500 per day. In nearly every case, an old photograph, a set of dog tags or a tattered shoulder patch kept in an old shoebox are all that remain from a silent "Greatest Generation" who saved the world from tyranny. Dad, or granddad may have never talked about the war, but succeeding generations are yearning to know just where he fit into the bloodiest conflict of the twentieth century. But where does one begin? How does one attempt to decipher a complex array of government and military documents? Where did dad or granddad serve, and what campaigns and battles did he partake in? What do the ribbons, medals, and other insignia on dad's uniform in that old photo mean? In _Finding Your Father's War: A Practical Guild to Researching and Understanding Service in the World War II US Army_, Jonathan Gawne answers these questions and much more.

Gawne, himself the son of a World War II veteran and author of several books on military related topics, narrows his research to the US Army and US Army Air Corps. In the opening chapters, Gawne delivers a succinct outline of World War II, a capsulation on the organization, training and recruitment of the US Army, its branches of service, ranks, and the difference between combat and non-combat units.

The author then delves into the complex array of Individual Records, and describes in detail the paper trail a soldier accumulates from recruitment to discharge. Gawne reveals what is an MOS, what the numbers and letters on a soldier's serial number means; the information found on his dog tags, his pay record, death records, and explains the Army mail system. Here, as in all chapters, examples of actual records are generously sprinkled throughout.

Gawne then details and shows examples of Organizational Records such as duty rosters, morning reports, periodic, and after-action reports. He points out the intricacies of military time, symbols on military maps, T/O & Es, code names, and what it means when a document is deemed "classified." The author then illustrates how to find records, locally, submit requests by mail, as well as how to navigate and conduct research at the National Archives.

Gawne's chapter of "tangible evidence," describes in minute detail what those items found in the shoe box are, and what they signify. The author illustrates every accoutrement revealed in that old wartime photograph: everything from service and rank insignia, campaign ribbons, unit and personal awards, even headgear are meticulously described. Follow-up appendices delve deeper into unit organization, insignia, vehicle markings, and official Army abbreviations, just to name a few. A useful bibliography and side-bars throughout lead the reader to the most significant literature and internet resources for further research. The absence of an index would be the only nit-pick that could be applied here.

The book itself is a rare gem in today's corner-cutting publishing world. Printed on high-gloss museum quality paper, and utilizing mostly color photographs, this book is as pleasing to the eye as to the intellect. The plethora of organizational charts, illustrations, and photographs are arranged nicely, and never cluttered. The half inch thick book weighs a ton, further evidence of the quality of its construction. The price tag is surely reasonable for the quality.

This book is essential and a must for anyone planning to undertake research into a World War II veteran's service. Gawne has rendered a valuable service to the amateur and professional historian alike. I wish I had this work at my disposal when I started out on the same journey twenty-eight years ago. Way too "wordy"!!.......2007-03-29

I used this book for a class. I'm a history buff and a Graduate student in Secondary Education. I tried to read this book and struggled! The writing style is just too wordy. I had a hard time pulling out the actual facts and data from all of the inflated language! I usually do well with reading all my text books, but this was the worst I had in 5 years of college! If you have to use this book, BEWARE!!
