3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Lazarus Churchyard inhabits a very twisted world. He, and a few offsiders work as troubleshooters for hire, of a sort. They get involved with monsters, and magic, and the occult, because they are some of the people that can deal with that sort of thing. He, himself has the odd superhuman abilities that give him an advantage in this sort of work.

5 out of 5 stars Stylishly ultraviolent and wickedly funny.......2000-03-15

Lazarus Churchyard, as far as I can tell, was a character who appeared in Heavy Metal and possibly even less mainstream books. He is an older brainchild of Warren Ellis from his pre-Stormwatch days.

Lazarus is technically immortal. The vast majority of his body was shorn away at the genetic base level and replaced with highly resilient intelligent plastics capable of adapting to any situation in approximately the time it takes for a thought to be fired from the brain to another part of the body. At the time in which we see him, he's been alive for approximately 400 years, in which the world has seen plagues, revolutions, ethnic cleansings, and corporate takeovers of sinister proportions (much like "The Company" so often referred to in the "Alien" series). We are presented with four misadventures in the life of our antihero as he consumes prodigious quantities of drugs and wishes for death while casually dispatching anyone who gets in his way or those which he maintains strained friendships.

The language is short, sweet, and stylish. Ellis creates a futurespeak which tastes familiar if you've read "A Clockwork Orange" but is an entirely different creature of its own. "Creation" is the preferred slang of Lazarus' time, but we are thankfully spared the task of having to decipher it ourselves.

If you're a fan of Ellis' later works, you can't help but notice shades of "Transmetropolitan" begging to be fully fleshed out.

The art is dark, depending heavily on shades of purple and red. At times seeming almost amateurish, one cannot help but be struck by the masterful sequencing and panelling choices, not to mention the skill at which "the gutter" (as Scott McCloud put it) is used.

Although out-of-print, "The Lazarus Churchyard Collection" can still be found in some out-of-the-way places (I found my copy in the bargain bin of a Newbury Comics in Boston). It may also be possible to find the original printings of these stories in back-issues of Heavy Metal.

I highly recommend this collection for the serious Ellis fanatic or those who are simply looking for a good comic read.

Woodstock, the Human Be-In, the Monterey Pop Festival, the Summer of Love, hanging out with the Beatles, Dylan, Ginsberg, Joplin, Warhol, Cher, Leary, the Velvet Underground - photographer Lisa Law was there for it all, chronicling a cultural revolution and taking readers along for the ride. "Law has produced a book of depth, beauty, and impact - she has captured the heart of the '60s." - Publishers Weekly

5 out of 5 stars Lisa was there and knows............2000-01-10

Lisa Laws wonderful photographs bring the Sixties back to me in all its chaotic vigor. Several of her photos are in my book, Sleeping Where I Fall, and besides being a great pal, she has been an avid and persistent chronicler of her time. It's a treat to see once again, friends, heros, and icons "as they were" ...uncreased by age, and borne aloft by promise and hope.

5 out of 5 stars Flashing On The Sixties.......1999-11-29

Because I was not a professional photographer but a participant of many of the events that stand out so well in the sixties, I was able to capture intimate moments behind the scenes of the movers and the shakers.. the icons of the Sixties, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Nico, Janis Joplin, Big Brother, and the Holding Company, Otis Redding, Tiny Tim, Timothy Leary, Dennis Hopper, Coretta Scott King, Andy Warhol, Harrison Ford, Cher, Peter Fonda.. and events like Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock and the Human Be-In. Stories and interviews included give one a feeling that they were there sharing those special moments frozen in time. An introduction by Ram Dass lets the reader know how important this history is. Because of this book, the Museum of American History at the Smithsonian exhibited a show of 63 pieces of my work which you can see on line and they hold a permanent collection of 208 images for all time. If you wish you were there or you were, you will love this book. It is now out of print with the Chronicle Books label but will soon be out again in the year 2000 with Square Books.

5 out of 5 stars The archivist of the Sixties, Lisa Law gives THE overview........1999-11-14

A comprehensive and colorful overview of the counter culture and the communities of the Sixties. This book is a must for the collection of any 60's culture enthusiast. Come to know the personalities of the sixties intimately through the progressive accounts in this book. The photographs are amazing! See for yourself....

Puzzles in perpetual motion—that’s what these are! Many of these bright brainteasers focus on ingenious, moving mechanisms, including an ancient Greek door-opening apparatus that featured one of the earliest uses of steam. Check out a perpetuum mobile invented by a famous American mathematician and see if you can successfully explain its theoretical principle of operation. A cartoon depicts a classic Lewis Carroll conundrum: there’s a monkey hanging on a tree holding one end of a rope while a bunch of bananas balance the other end in a state of equilibrium. What will happen if the monkey starts to climb? Other problems deal with gears and levers, while still more shift to number, counting, and calculation challenges.

"The combination of this book and its associated virtual computer is fantastic! Experience over the last fifty years has shown me that there's only one way to truly understand how computers work; and that is to learn one computer and its instruction set-no matter how simple or primitive-from the ground up. Once you fully comprehend how that simple computer functions, you can easily extrapolate to more complex machines."
                                      -Fred Hudson, retired engineer/scientist

"This book-along with the virtual DIY Calculator-is an incredibly useful teaching and learning tool. The interesting trivia nuggets keep you turning the pages to see what's next. Students will have so much fun reading the text and performing the labs that they won't even realize they are learning."
-Michael Haghighi, Chairperson of the Business and Computer Information Systems Division, Calhoun Community College, Alabama

"At last, a book that presents an innovative approach to the teaching of computer architecture. Written with authority and verve, witty, superbly illustrated, and enhanced with many laboratory exercises, this book is a must for students and teachers alike."
-Dr. Albert Koelmans, Lecturer in Computer Engineering, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, and the 2003 recipient of the EASIT-Eng. Gold Award for Innovative Teaching in Computer Engineering

Packed with nuggets of information and tidbits of trivia, How Computers Do Math provides an incredibly fun and interesting introduction to the way in which computers perform their magic in general and math in particular. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a virtual computer/calculator called the DIY Calculator, and the book's step-by-step interactive laboratories guide you in the creation of a simple program to run on your DIY Calculator.

How Computers Do Math can be enjoyed by non-technical individuals; students of computer science, electronics engineering, and mathematics; and even practicing engineers. All of the illustrations and interactive laboratories featured in the book are provided on the CD-ROM for use by high school, college, and university educators as lecture notes and handouts.

I am a hobbyist and have found this book invaluable. I have a Computer Science background and so have no problems with the concepts. Even if you do have problems with the concepts, the Labs are a walk-through
and one can then kind of 'get it'.

I'm a university Professor in France and one of my courses is on 8-bit microcontroller programming.

In the past I used to use the 68HC05 as an example but for students who are not familiar with reading datasheets the investment in time was just huge. Although good and free simulators exist, these were hard for the students to find and install.

This book changed my student's life and considerably eased my life. The proposed microprocessor has all the features of a real one without the useless complexity drawbacks and heavy documentation. Students better like it than 68HC05 and there are plenty of examples that they can play with. A collection of slides for educators even avoids to have to compose your ones.

I highly recommend this as standard material for teaching microprocessor programming.

Just in time for the electoral smackdown between Gore vs. Bush, comes this small book written by a Tennessee college professor. Borrowing from a nineteenth century tradition when teachers presented students with handbooks that served as "a brief guide to the essential elements of the American Creed," Dr. George Grant has compiled such a compact anthology. This primer for citizens includes twenty-six golden oldies, including The Mayflower Compact, the U.S. Constitution, Paul Revere's Ride, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, the Sullivan Ballou Letter, and Patrick Henry's Liberty or Death speech, as well as mini-biographies of the founding fathers and the presidents.

I will admit, though, that my first thought glancing through the book was not a patriotic one but a financial one. This sounds cheap, but why pay ten bucks for documents that are freely obtained from any library, many web sites, or any number of civic-minded organizations? For example, a buddy gave me a 55-page booklet that contained the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Washington's Farewell Address. Recently, a Washington D.C. think tank mailed me, gratis, a similar booklet printed on lovely ivory-colored paper.

Maybe it's all part of a clever, vast conspiracy to foist upon overentertained Americans a Gideon's Bible-sized history of their Republic, in the hope they'll actually read the thing and - presto- know the truth. Of course, such enlightened souls will weep at how unconstitutional and banal politics has become in the age of Oprah. But I digress. What sets Grant's book apart from the pack is that he offers food for thought not usually served up in such compendiums. For instance, an 1895 speech, delivered by Booker T. Washington, the black educator who was born a slave, titled "Atlanta Exposition Address" is a welcome addition. As is Theodore Roosevelt's "The Man With The Muck-Rake." Reading Teddy's speech, delivered before the House of Representatives in 1906, makes one realize that he might very well be the original compassionate conservative.

Another gem is the "The Forgotten Presidents." It profiles the thirteen men who preceeded George Washington in the fifteen-year period the country operated mostly as a confederated nation. The first of these presidents was Peyton Randolph of Virginia who began his term in 1774, and the last was Arthur St. Clair, a Scot, who was elected `president' in 1787.

Grant's sketches of the official presidents are balanced, but I am going to nitpick at least one point. Professor Grant, the phrase "The business of America is business" was not uttered by Calvin Coolidge. Rather, Coolidge said, "After all, the chief business of the American people is business." And then he added, "Of course the accumulation of wealth cannot be justified as the chief end of existence." (I live near Coolidge's old stomping grounds in western Massachusetts, and we residents are in the business of fiercely

defending ol' Cal's legacy whenever the opportunity presents itself.) The Pocket Patriot makes for an easy-to-use reference guide for a homeschooling student, aspiring presidential candidate, armchair political quarterback, or new U.S. citizen.

Radu Ioanid's account of the destruction of Jews and Gypsies under the regime of Ion Antonescu, based upon privileged access to secret East European government archives, is an unprecedented analysis of heretofore purposely hidden materials. He builds an accurate perspective on Romanian policies of racism, anti-Semitism, and Jewish extermination during this extraordinary period in world history. Published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. With a Foreword by Elie Wiesel. Invaluable...monumental...no comparable work in any language has documented this important history with the thoroughness, skill, and analytical sophistication this book demonstrates. --Leo Spitzer, Dartmouth College

Area studies may be the next area of creativity and productivity in Holocaust studies. Raul Hilberg has written on the whole -- masterfully, brilliantly and enduringly. Leni Yahil, Lucy Dawidowicz, Martin Gilbert and others have also written on the whole offering differing perspectives but attempting to grasp the whole. The next generation may, of necessity, be more restricted and more restrained in their writing. More documents are available and thus more can be known of each specific area of study, of victim groups, of regions. Many younger scholars do not have the mastery of languages that was common to their elders, most especially to the Eastern European Jews who mastered several languages before they left home.

Radu Ioanid is an excellent example of the promise of area studies. A Romanian native, he has written of the Holocaust in Romania. This work, originally written in French, is translated into English because of the generosity and commitment of the Holocaust Memorial Museum and its determination to make a study of Romanian Jewry available. It has assisted in the publication of two works on Hungarian Jewry including an important condensation of Randolph Braham masterful study of The Politics of Genocide: The Holocaust in Hungary.

Ioanid's work has many virtues. It is detailed and precise. His mastery of the material is evident throughout. His interpretations are sound, his methods are clear. Perhaps the two most important virtues of the work are that it is virtually without competition for Ioanid has reviewed and reported on new documentation that has hitherto been virtually unavailable for anyone to see. Too little has been published in the English language regarding the fate of Romanian Jewry. It is a story worth telling because it does not fit into the general pattern of destruction. Romania was allied with Germany. Some of its population and a large part of its Jewish population - the Jews of Northern Transnistria -- was given to Hungary by Germany in 1940, and thus its Jews remained relatively untouched by the "Final Solution" until the fateful days following the German invasion of Hungary in March 1944. Between May 15th and July 8th 437,402 Jews were transported to Auschwitz on 148 trains. Though originally Romanian - Elie Wiesel among them - their fate is regarded as an essential part of the Hungarian story, not the Romanian one.

The shape of Ioanid's chapters tell much of the Romanian story: Massacres at the Beginning of the War, Transit camps, Deportations and Other Mass Murders, Massacres in Transnistia, Life in Transnistria, the Survival of Romanian Jews. What scholars have long known but few non-professionals realize - and what Ioanid documents in precise detail -- is that for the most part Romania did not rely upon German assistance or initiatives to solve its own Jewish problem. They "took care" of their own Jews, mimicking some of the German formats, but in essence avoided the unique German creation of the death camps, instead transporting the Jews to Transnistria. Romania was not necessarily less ruthless to its Jews than the Germans, only significantly less disciplined and methodical, less technologically inventive. Those not murdered by Romanian troops, or those who did not die along the way, lived under such harsh conditions that their chances of survival were imperiled until Romanian adjusted its policy to the new reality that Germany was certain to lose the war. They then presumed that there was more value in living Jews than dead Jews. Living Jews could be exchanged for money or political advantage. Dead Jews were of little value, except for the fact that the land was Judenrein for unlike the Germans, Romania did not recycle Jewish bodies.

Along the way, the Romanians initiated pogroms, such as the one in Iasi. Romanian troops participated in the Einsatzgruppen murders along with SS troops, In Bessarabia, northern Bukovina and southern Ukraine - the most prominent murder sites were Bogdanovka, Dumanovka and Acmicetcka and of course Odessa.. They deported Jews from their homes in cattle cars, copying the German deportations of Jews from ghettos to death camps, but the Romanians did not have death camps at the end of the journey of these Jews. Thus, they were held captive in these trains without food or water in unlivable conditions until they died, and were then buried in mass graves along the railroad tracks. The majority of the Jews were deported to Transnistria, where they were held captive until they died. More than 150,000 Jews died there. And the Jews in old Romania were held for a ransom that was not forthcoming - until many years after the Holocaust when the Jews of Romania were ransomed from Communist rule, in a story that is still largely untold.

Ioanid is not only plowing fresh land, describing the fate of Romanian Jews that is little understood, but he is also relying on documents that have only recently become available. One of the major contributions of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and its recently retired chairman Miles Lerman has been international agreements to copy documents relating to the Holocaust in countries that were formerly behind the Iron Curtain. Ioanid and the director of the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies Paul Shapiro were deeply involved in these efforts for almost a decade and the fruits of their impressive labor are to be seen in the collection of the Museum archives and in the benefit that scholars such as Ioanid reap, from this newly available material. Only two scholars, Radu Ioanid and Jean Ancel of Yad Vashem have spent the time reading this vast documentation and Ioanid's work shows the benefits of such detailed documentary research.

The timing of his work is also fortunate. There have been efforts by Romanian nationalists on the right, who were long silenced by Communist rule, to rehabilitate the reputation of Marshall Antonescu, the Romanian ruler during the Holocaust. Monuments have been erected and new words of praise have seen their way into print. Ioanid's work will ensure that the full record of Antonescu will be known in the West and the revisionist history will not be fueled by ignorance in the West.

The Holocaust in Romania is difficult to read emotionally as Elie Wiesel put it in his foreword because the behavior of the Romanians at their own initiative without relying on the Germans marks an anguished chapter in the history of the Holocaust. In Ioanid, the Jews of Romania have found a historian whose intellect matches his dedication to detail and his passion to tell the truth that he uncovers.

This survey of the destruction of Jews and gypsies under the Antonescue regime from 1940-44 surveys a little-known era in Romanian history (indeed, much of the nation's history is little revealed to those outside the country). Chapters prove in depth a holocaust every bit as extensive as the German experience and reveals cruelty expressed on many levels in Romanian society.

I haven't read much of this book, because it contains images of the most awful thing I have ever seen, the 'death by a thousand cuts'. These pictures still haunt me, and the author uses them, claiming that they are disturbing because they represent somebody who is halfway between being alive and dead - I disagree - they are disturbing because they are scenes of an atrocity inflicted on a living being. (The victim was a woman who allegedly committed adultery in China, I'm not sure when the photos were taken but they look quite old).
Those four pictures have destroyed any faith I ever had in human beings, they will probably do the same to you if you are unfortunate enough to ever see them.

James Elkins has a wonderful way of opening our eyes to the world. He explains the way we see, or maybe what we don't see, in a witty and extremely accessible way. Elkins uses his knowledge of Art History and mixes it freely with neurology and psychology to bring us readers at a different level of understanding of the world. I'm already a true fan!

James Elkins is a masterful writer. His work is very philosophical, though he is an art historian. I heartily recommend all of his books, but The Object Stares Back is my favorite. The books makes me sad, angry, creeped out, proud, excited... Elkins is masterful, clear, and insightful. He forces you to reconsider your ideas about what it means to see and to be seen. Great book.

2 out of 5 stars Reads like a wordy blog from an art critic........2004-05-07

I was hoping for something more researched, like a compilation of several articles I have occasionally read in "Scientific American" and "Discover." Not only was this book merely opininated ramblings, the prose didn't make for easy reading. (For example, over half of his sentences begin with the letter "I." It gets dreary after a while.)

All in all, this book reads like a ten page research paper stretched out to book length with a lot of non-pertinent information and pointless conjecture tossed in. The photographs are interesting, although many of them (the polish woman with the arrows describing directions for putting on make-up, for example) provide just enough information to intrigue me, and then leave me with unanswered questions.
Considering how long this book is, I would have hoped he would have touched on refraction, color blindness, the sighted blind, optical illusions, etc. Instead, he mostly describes non-art objects the way an art critic would. He has a few interesting points, e.g. his brain has been permananty trained to recognize moth-like shapes because of a fondness for the insects in childhood, but even this interesting fact is couched in long, rambling prose.
If you've never ever read anything about vision, and don't mind that most of his conjectures aren't verified, you might find this interesting. If you, like me, were hoping for a layman's explaination of a fascinating subject, you will be sorely disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected but still a good and interesting read!.......2004-04-15

I agree with the other reviewers, however I do not feel that the book deserves a low review because people's expectations were not met. I expected a more scientific explanation of seeing, but this book is not about that. I was impressed by the writing of Elkins because it is very thought provoking and insightful. I would recommend this book to someone who is interested in seeing the world in a different way, because this book will encourage you to look at things a little more carefully and realize there is much we see, do not see, try not to see and try hard to see but fail to do so. Very interesting book!!!

                                        Book Description

No Turning Back is the story of how the environmental movement displaced a conservation movement’s century of success with a crisis strategy to change not only government policy but also American culture.

Kaufman finds the movement’s conception in the revolt of European and English romantics against both the rational mind of science and the Industrial Revolution. He traces the sparks of that movement to America, where it was nourished by Henry David Thoreau, still the writer most widely quoted by environmentalists.

While Thoreau declared that "in Wilderness is the preservation of the world," this book demonstrates the exact opposite: in civilization is preservation of wilderness.

Kaufman depicts an environmental movement crippled by its own fantasies and outlines a plan for building on the strengths of Western technology and culture to save the planet. To suggest that human beings can survive and thrive by rejecting precisely what makes them unique—namely, reason, planning, and inventiveness—is a recipe for disaster, Kaufman writes.

By debunking well-known environmental experts, No Turning Back generates much debate.
