Book Description
Comic genius Sam Henderson is one of the funniest people in comics. His Magic Whistle series has been nominated every single year since 1999 for the Harvey Award for "Special Award for Humor," and Sam was nominated for an Emmy for his writing for SpongeBob SquarePants. Henderson's drawing is intentionally crude, but it has the same kind of energy you see in the work of today's best gag cartoonists. Extremely low-brow humor that almost parodies low-brow humor - it is enjoyable on either level.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond Existential.......2006-09-04
Excellent book! Sam Henderson never disappoints; simply put, he is a genius. His deftly-drawn characters and absurdist humour speak volumes of the human condition ... not unlike the works of novelists Samuel Beckett or Jerry Stahl.

Terry Gilliam's own selection of the funniest and silliest of Python oeuvre.
Customer Reviews:
Picked by Terry Gilliam.......2003-03-04
This whole "Pocketful of Python" series strikes me as just a bit odd. Much of it was released to mark Monty Python's 30th Anniversary, and it seems like something of a cash-in. After all, it's just portions of other Python books crammed into several volumes in a slightly new way.
That said, I have gotten an awful lot of enjoyment from the series (hence the four star rating.) This selection of material edited by Terry Gilliam has some very good material. There are very few copper bottom Python classics in it (other than the Prince in the Tower), there are some of my favorite unappreciated bits, like The Old Storyteller, Adventures of Walter the Wallaby, What to Do When Meeting the Royal Family, and the German Lumberjack Song.
In addition, there is a preface by Eric Idle (at the back of the book) which is probably the funniest of the "Pocketful of Python" series.
not just for brits.......2002-08-08
since i saw "holy grail" 6 years ago, (i was 10) i have been hell bent on finding everything the pythons ever did. unfortunately most of my friends don't share my enthusiasm for british comedy, but i think it should be known that the occasional american recognizes comedic genius when she sees it. for all those who live in areas where mention of the pythons is scarce, this is a must have. you'll be quoting them in your head at school, at work, on the bus, wherever. just ignore the people who turn and look when you burst out laughing.
This is Abuse....Stupid Git.......2002-01-03
Well, what CAN be said? It is good to see humour spelled with a pair of U's (per the King's English). Whilst doth contain numerous funny bits, perhaps the American palate is not suited for wit which possesses intellectual subtleties.
For our American friends I recommend Rosanne Arnold, fluorescent plaid sport-coats (with matching white 5cm/2" belt), premium Wisconsin 3 week old processed cheese slices, Napa Valley's finest blush and a domestic rum tipped Colt cigar.

Book Description
Academic superstars Andrew Ross, Edward Said, and Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Bad boy filmmakers Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, and Brian de Palma. What do these influential contemporary figures have in common? In Cool Men and the Second Sex, Susan Fraiman identifies them all with "cool masculinity" and boldly unpacks the gender politics of their work.
According to Fraiman, "cool men" rebel against a mainstream defined as maternal. Bad boys resist the authority of women and banish mothers to the realm of the uncool. As a result, despite their hipness -- or because of it -- these men too often feel free to ignore the insights of feminist thinkers. Through subtle close readings, Fraiman shows that even Gates, champion of black women's writing, and even queer theorists bent on undoing gender binaries, at times end up devaluing women in favor of men and masculinity.
A wide-ranging and fair-minded analysis, Cool Men acknowledges the invaluable contributions of its subjects while also deciphering the gender codes and baring the contradictions implicit in their work. Affirming the legacy of second-wave feminist scholars and drawing as well on the intersectional work of third-wavers, Cool Men helps to reinvent feminist critique for the twenty-first century.

Cisco Systems has lately become aggressive in promoting applications of the IP network infrastructure equipment that the company has traditionally sold. Cisco CallManager--the subject of Cisco CallManager Fundamentals--is essentially an IP-based Public Branch Exchange (PBX) that enables companies to carry their voice and data traffic on a single network infrastructure. This book explains how CallManager (originally developed by Selsius Systems) goes about providing call-control services to IP telephony devices and performing reliably as a corporate telephone switch, and offers insight into how the product may evolve. The volume provides systems architects, engineers, and implementation technicians with the details they need to build strong CallManager systems.
Written by members of the CallManager development team and extensively edited for accuracy, Cisco CallManager Fundamentals uses prose and remarkably clear network diagrams to make its points. People looking for a detailed understanding of how CallManager works will find themselves delighted. While technicians looking for click-this, click-that procedures will be generally disappointed (such didactic techniques are not typical of Cisco Press books), they will find a fair number of sections that explain, in general terms, how to do such administrative work as loading users' names into a CallManager database and routing calls to emergency numbers. --David Wall
Topics covered: All aspects of Cisco CallManager, versions 3.0x and 3.1, of interest to the people who design, implement, and maintain the IP telephony solution. Matters of system architecture (with plenty of information about hardware and network requirements), call routing, media processing, and reporting are all covered. Does not include details of CallManager's integration with the Intelligent Contact Manager (ICM) business-rules engine, or much information on external Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) applications.
Book Description
Exposes the inner workings of CallManager to help you maximize your Cisco IP Telephony solution
- Learn how to deploy and manage a CallManager solution
- Understand how CallManager processes information through detailed architectural examples and descriptions
- Understand the components that make up CallManager call routing through the use of basic to advanced examples that solve enterprise call routing problems
- Learn detailed information about North American and international dial plans, trunk and station devices, media resources, managing and monitoring CallManager, and call detail records
Cisco CallManager Fundamentals provides examples and reference information about CallManager, the call processing component of the Cisco AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video, and Integrated Data) IP Telephony solution. Cisco CallManager Fundamentals uses examples and architectural descriptions to explain how CallManager processes calls. This book details the inner workings of CallManager so that those responsible for designing and maintaining a Voice over IP (VoIP) solution from Cisco Systems can understand the role each component plays and how they interrelate. You'll learn detailed information about hardware and software components, call routing, media processing, system management and monitoring, and call detail records. The authors, all members of the CallManager group at Cisco Systems, also provide a list of features and Cisco solutions that integrate with CallManager. This book is the perfect resource to supplement your understanding of CallManager.
Customer Reviews:
WARNING! This book is outdated!.......2006-02-22
One of the other customer reviews for this book (which may have been removed by now because I have complained about it) says: "This book has been updated to include the 4.1 version, a big improvement over the old book which covered 3.0 or maybe 3.1."
But clearly, that customer was referring to the 2nd Edition of the book - this book that you are looking at is the First Edition; in other words, it IS the old book which only covers version 3.1. I know, because I just bought it for $20 and now I will throw it away and buy the 2nd Edition.
Thankfully a New and Updated Edition to Cover v4.1.......2005-11-04
Thankfully, a new edition. This is hands down the best book available on using the Cisco CallManager system. Unfortunately the first edition came out in 2001, since then the software has gone through at least five revision levels. This book has been updated to include the 4.1 version, a big improvement over the old book which covered 3.0 or maybe 3.1.
The biggest point about this book is that it covers the inner workings, the architecture of the system. This is often helpful in understanding just what it is that you're doing. Of course it also covers all of the standard user interface tools like management, monitoring, reports and everything else.
This is hands down the best book on the CallManager, if you have to manage one of these beasts you have a much harder job on your hands if you don't have this book. My only real negative, please guys, don't wait for six software releases to go by before you do a third edition.
Great Book, but not updated.......2005-08-02
This is a great book for the new Cisco Phone administrator, but please realize that although it is in its 7th printing, it has not been updated. I ordered this book and found that most of the information I was looking for was on items added after CCM 3.1 (which is the version that is covered in this book).
Better than any other CIPT book in the market..........2004-03-01
I studied this book for my CIPT exam. Even though this book itself does not suffice to pass the exam, I could not have done without it either. It provides a clear understanding of CallManager and other CIPT components. All the pictures and graphics are well designed. If I have to criticise a couple points, I would say there are a few organization flaws. Titles could have been organized more effectively. Another improvement could be deviding Route Plan chapter. This chapter is very long compare to others.
Overall, I strongly recommend this book for those who want to understand "Fundamentals of CallManager." Also, if you are studying for CIPT, you should consider "Cisco IP Telephony" book along with this.
As far as practice tests concerns, neither books have enough questions for practice. I had to find a third party question bank to study and it helped a lot. "Cisco IP Telephony" book has some practice questions at the end of each chapter, but I can almost gurantee you that they don't help on the actual test.
Good luck to everyone...
A Very Well Docemented Book That Is Clear And Easy To Unders.......2001-12-08
I did the CIPT training course hoping that it would be enough to pass the exam. Although the instructor was excellent, the documentation was not. It did not couther certain topics in detail, and was hard to follow. As I had to pass the exam for myself and so that the company kept its Cisco Partner Status I had to get some good documentation.
Although I am only half was through this book I am finding it excellent. It goes into good detail on the information, which you have to know, whilst not sending you to sleep on information, which is not relevant to call manager, networking, or telephony. I am confident that once I have read the book a few times I should be able to pass the exam without too much trouble. Cannot say this about the Cisco training documentation.

Book Description
The essays assembled here represent forty years of reflection about the European cultural past by an eminent historian. The volume concentrates on the Renaissance and Reformation, while providing a lens through which to view problems of perennial interest. A Usable Past is a book of unusual scope, touching on such topics as political thought and historiography, metaphysical and practical conceptions of order, the relevance of Renaissance humanism to Protestant thought, the secularization of European culture, the contributions of particular professional groups to European civilization, and the teaching of history.
The essays in A Usable Past are unified by a set of common concerns. William Bouwsma has always resisted the pretensions to science that have shaped much recent historical scholarship and made the work of historians increasingly specialized and inaccessible to lay readers. Following Friedrich Nietzsche, he argues that since history is a kind of public utility, historical research should contribute to the self-understanding of society.

Book Description
Most studies of Jews in the period from Alexander to Trajan have concentrated almost exclusively on Jerusalem and Judea. In this book, John Barclay assembles and analyzes evidence about the Jewish communities in Egypt, Syria, Cyrenaica, Rome, and Asia. Barclay's ambitious goal is to describe, as precisely as the evidence allows, the varying levels of assimilation and antagonism between Jews and the non-Jewish communities in these areas for this 440-year period. With a concluding review of Jewish identity in the Diaspora as a whole, this book provides our first comprehensive and multi-faceted survey of Diaspora communities and Diaspora literature.
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly Informative And Very Readable.......2003-01-04
Although the title of this book is more like a subtitle and thus is not catchy or memorable, 'Jews of the Mediterranean Diaspora etc.', deserves to be widely read and studied by anyone interested in the development of Judaism and early Christianity. John Barclay is consistently even-handed and fairminded in his considerations of literary and archaeological evidence from the Greco-Roman period, describing a vivid picture of the diversity and unity of Jewish communities in Alexandria, Rome, Cyrene, Anatolia and Syria, as well as the shifting fortunes of these communities under the various regimes. A great deal of the pseudepigraphic literature is examined in detail. The chapter on Paul as a Jew in a Hellenistic society, though short, is more enlightening than several books. Barclay's assessments of, and disagreements with, other scholars work are such that scholarly writing could acquire a good reputation if others would emulate them. The style is as accessible as it is informative. Now I wish Mr. Barclay or someone like him would write similar books on the Pre-Exilic, Exilic, and Persian periods. I can dream, can't I?

Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind
ASIN: 0880642211 |
Book Description
Research into the brain in the last decade has dramatically changed our understanding of how we humans manage to escape our biological shackles by constantly re-molding ourselves in a near-infinite number of ways. Here one of the world's leading researchers of brain rehabilitation explains with remarkable lucidity the new discoveries to the general reader and the important implications this has for health and human potential.
Ian Robertson explains in fascinating detail how who and what we are is sculpted throughout our lifetime, second by second, by our interactions with the world, by our relationships with other people. Your brain is changed physically by the conversations you have, the events you witness and the love you receive. This is true all through your life, not just when you are an infant, writes Prof. Robertson. This process, which he calls sculpting the brain, occurs despite the genetic hard-wiring of Darwinian evolution. Indeed, evolution's gift to us, he says, is that we are no longer slaves of our biology, even if that biology hasn't endowed us with perfection. The evolutionary gift we have allows us to modify our inclinations in countless ways in a process which constantly shapes and reshapes us, as a trembling web of 100 billion brain cells fires off cascades of impulses which ultimately create the experiences which make us what we are.
Mind Sculpture shows:
Why your brain is physically changed by what you do, see, feel and think
How you can become physically stronger from the comfort of your armchair by carrying out mental exercises in your imagination
Why learning molds the brain structurally, growing new connections between brain cells
How education builds brain power it's not all down to genes.
How increasing your education over your lifetime will make you more likely to be mentally healthy in old age.
Why stress can cause brain cells to shrink or even die.
How keeping mentally active as you get older keeps your brain working better
Why love grows the brain
Customer Reviews:
Tosses out the old, negative myths about the brain.......2002-09-02
This is an excellent book about the latest research on brain structure, and perhaps the best thing about the newest information is how hopeful it is. Robertson shows that your brain is what you make of it, day by day. We can make new patterns and neural pathways in our brain all the way through old age, simply by putting new demands on it. This book is must reading for anyone who was depressed by the idea that their brain stopped growing and started dying at age 15. If you keep on using your brain, it will keep on growing.
Pointless waste of innocent trees.......2001-10-15
According to the cover blurb this book reflects the very latest brain research. In fact it is almost completely based on what is known as "Hebbian Learning", or as this author puts it (over and over and OVER again) "cells that fire together, wire together."
Is this new? Not unless you count research circa 1949 as new.
Despite the author's impressive CV, this book has a single message - brain cells don't regenerate, but the more you use your brain the more new connections it will develop.
Question is, how to you string this message out to over 250 pages? With lots of waffle and SERIOUS repetition. That's how.
Not even a total newcomer to the subject will be able to extract much from this simplistic, even patronising text.
Conclusion: Like the headline says, a pointless waste of innocent trees.
Highly Recommended!.......2001-04-18
This first-rate study of the workings of the brain is required reading for anyone interested in how advertisers influence consumers, how mental exercise can improve both mental and physical performance or how parents can stimulate mental activity in their young children. That probably doesn't leave out many curious readers. Starting with a basic explanation of how the brain initially forms, Ian H. Robertson logically proceeds into his explanation of mind sculpting, which is nothing less than the process through which the mind is continuously evolving. His treatment of the staggeringly complex topic is surprisingly accessible, enabling you to make the intuitive leaps from biological detail to the practical manifestations of these phenomena without handholding. In short, we [...] recommend that you read this book.
A must read........2000-09-25
Excellent summary of recent, direct explorations of how the brain works, such how it learns, and the implications of such knowledge to individuals, schools, governments, societies, and human evolution. The examples are fascinating. The writing, by a person of deep knowledge of his subject, is efficient, humble, and, at times, humerous, The author has successfully made some important, liberating, and inspiring information accessible to general readership.
