A Little Misdirection Never Hurt, Right?.......2002-07-23

Okay, so the title is completely misleading. After reading the title, I picked up this book expecting to learn about how past winners made it that far, from how they selected the best contests for their screenplay to their techniques in entering. I expected a book full of success stories and testimonials I could look to when feeling a little discouraged. But it's not what I got.

I would describe this as a market listing more than a how-to book. It provides information on more than 150 screenplay competitions, with the usual market directory information: entry fees, categories, sponsors, contact information, deadlines, rules, etc. But when it comes to making that leap from an overwhelming list of contests to THE contest that is best for a screenplay (if such a thing exists), the pickings are fairly slim here. The book contains a smattering of short interviews and features on specific contests, but the focus here is on where to go and not how to get there.

The fact is that contest information is available (and often more current) in the trade magazines and on numerous websites. This book might provide a good place to start searching for the right contests, but ultimately it hasn't filled any need that I wasn't able to fill elsewhere.

Effective advice, but I would have liked more.......2000-07-18

For the price of this book, there isn't a lot of information presented here. But the author, Erik Joseph, does at least provide an overview of what to expect when entering a screenplay contest.

The first part of the book describes structuring. I was skeptical about this section in particular since I've seen some great screenwriting books devoted to this. And, the author doesn't really go much into structure but scratch the surface, relying on quotes to guide the novice screenwriter.

But Mr. Joseph does at least cover what the screenwriting contests consider standard formatting for screenplays. So I'd say his advice on formatting was effective and helpful.

As for the screenwriting contests themselves, Mr. Joseph provides a one page overview of 42 screenwriting competitions. This section could definitely have been condensed. I think about every screenwriting journal out there lists these contests frequently in their respective publications ("Creative Screenwriting," by the way, is my personal favorite of those publications).

Further along in the book are a few interviews. I always like interviews in screenwriting books, and I will sometimes buy a screenwriting book just for the interviews. However, these are very short and terse and could have been more effective (I guess not everyone can interview like Barbara Walters, so I'll cut the author SOME slack).

An excellent chapter (only two pages though) is entitled "Good Examples of Bad Screenwriting." It contains actual samples of bad writing in submitted entries. Examining those atrocities was very helpful. However, I thought the author could have expanded on these a little more or explained why he chose specific ones for inclusion (are these frequent mistakes? how can one best avoid them? what are good sources for further refinement of grammar?)

Overall, I will give "How to Enter Screenplay Contests & Win!" four stars because it is effective in its discussion of screenwriting contests. However, I would have liked more advice and a longer book (it's 170 pages; but a lot of the pages are partially blank). And the cover of the book was not up to par due to the advertising blurbs on it that were entirely superfluous ("over $3 million in guaranteed cash!" on the front cover; and "win millions of dollars with your movie idea!" on the back cover).

In short, I'd like to see a second edition of this book that is expanded upon. However, I do think the product as it stands now is effective in accurately describing screenwriting contests and motivating aspiring writers to enter them.

Not a book to learn from - ok for intermediate plus level players.......2006-10-24

The book has some good sections, but some parts are covered better in other books. It's not a bad book, just not a great book. It wasn't particularly fun to read (ok there were a few amizing quips).
Many of the tips were in the form of "In this situation with X do Y"

Of all of Eddie Kantars books I liked this least.
I'm not sure who its aimed at.
Its not presented in a way that someone who is unfamilair with the material will learn it. It's more geared towards someone who already knows the material and is looking for tips. It may help you identify some mistakes in your knowledge of fundamentals. The problem is the tips don't always explain why.
"Do it" as opposed to "This is why you should do it" is not all that helpful.

I much prefered Kantars Modern and Advanced bridge defense (Big Red) to his defensive tips book for teh same reason. An abridge version of technical (and dry) material doesn't do the subject justice and is not fun to read. I'd rather read a longer book that includes the "why".

Invaluable book of the finer points to the game. #30 tells you when you DON'T respond 4 card suits up the line! This book is crammed with bits of wisdom that would take you 10 years to accumulate thru your own experiences. Make life easy! Let Eddie tell you. The comments are brief. Excellent examples. Basic OpenType introductions are included in English, French and German. Small icon shows glyph supported indicates the range of using of each typeface.

I have zillions of fonts on my computer, but only have the essentials loaded in my Font Book, so this guide helps me find the fonts I want. It is essential for anyone who needs special fonts or someone who is, like me, picky about which fonts are used in a project. There is a section at the beginning of the book that has an easy guide to types of fonts, then there are sections with fonts grouped according to their characteristics such as serif, sans serif, script, etc. Then in the back, each font is listed and a the entire font family is printed as well as a sentence, too, so you can see how it looks and flows. I love it.

Adobe's fonts are so widely available in the otf format (they explain it in the book) that I try to use them whenever possible. This book makes it easy to find the fonts I need.

Much like a dictionary of useful font styles. Very helpful for graphic design work and web page design when looking for specific type to blend in with graphics. Especially good for advertising brochures and flyers. Also contains Greek alphabet and numerous symbols.

An interesting artifact.......2006-09-22

This is an unaltered reprint of a book published in 1912. It's primarily interesting as an example of what amateur scholars (especially in Britain) were putting out in that era. Cranky and usually hilariously offbase, but often fun to read. The author's etymological speculations are remarkable: a supposed root AK is the basis of Heracles, zodiac, yak (the animal), akbar ('great' in Arabic): ironically, the correct etymologies of these items were already well-known in 1912, though not, it would seem, to Mr. Bayley. The author's analysis of the Cinderella story will leave your head spinning!

One of the best books I have found to truly outline symbolism in not just religion but also in myths, fairy tales, legends and signs. I greatly recommend it for its incredible depth and insight.

Harold Bayley's work will imortalize this scholar. His global linking of myth, legend and fact is a milestone. This wreat work was written long before the word "diffusion" was outlawed from scholarly endevour. Bayley correctly points out the global scale and diffusion of myth, legend tales and symbolism. The sections concerning Lugh, Hu, Stonehenge and Avebury are must reading for every scholar of the ancients.

A weird, wonderful and cranky book. The author advises you to skip the first few chapters because they are a bit obsessive and not very interesting to most people (they are actually fascinating, but it's great to see modesty in an author). The symbolic meaning of watermarks is explained, but that's just the start, soon the book gets in full swing going off on fascinating tangents left right and centre. Ancient myths, the masons, rosicrucians & templars .Lots of highly speculative etymology of words like "cucumber" (translated as "mighty-fire-father" if I remember right). Smashing stuff. Read it and be confused

One of the most important books I own.......2005-12-13

This is the only book I know that discusses the general theory of elasticity without resorting to tensor calculus. It is an algebraic development of the nonlinear equations of elasticity that apply when strains and deformations are not assumed to be infinitesimally small.
Most textbooks on classical elasticity and strength of materials typically qualify everything at the outset by specifying that the theory is only valid for infinitesimally small strains and deflections. And then they go right ahead and apply the theory to problems in which the strains and displacements are finite - small but finite. If you've ever worried about where the limits are and wanted to know what to do when linear theory breaks down, this is the book that tells you.
Furthermore,it isn't just an academic novelty. I have actually used a version of Novoshilov's nonlinear elasticity equations to calculate the deflection of a beam under tension.

Excellent introduction text..........2001-04-06

If you want to learn the non-linear theory this is the book to start with for the following reasons: - It devellops in the same way as the book on classical elasticity, by Love. - It does not use tensorcalcus to derive the formulas, exept for one paragraph. - The derivation of the equations are very clear and precice, omitting only the easy (obvious) steps.

The only drawback of this book is that there are few practical applications, it's sole purpose is the development of the theory.

You can find the references to this work in any paper in nonlinear mechanics! Book is small, but it's cool! I like to have it my home library.
