One of my old-time favorites.......2003-12-02

I saw the six episode OAV for Please Save My Earth long ago, fan subs and all. The series immediately captured my heart, and has been one of my all-time favorites for years. It's truly masterful storytelling, and the first volume is too hilarious for words ^^

Since I find the synopsis provided by the site unstatysfying, I'll help you out. Alice is a really shy, passive girl that just moved to Tokyo from far-off Hokkaido. She has an odd gift for communicating with plants and animals, so the urban setting doesn't thrill her much. To top things off, she's not fitting in at school, and her bratty (and cruel!) seven year old neighbor, Kobayashi Rin, torments her constantly. She ends up overhearing an (coughcough) *odd* conversation between classmate Ogura Jinpachi and his (coughcough) *friend* Nishikiori Issei. Alice, embarrassed to no end, runs off, but not before she steps on a leaf, notifying them of her presence. Later, Alice takes Rin to the zoo, where she runs into these two again. In an effort to clear up the misunderstanding, Jinpachi takes Alice and co. to a nearby coffee shop and begins to explain their situation. Turns out, he and his buddy Issei have been having dreams in a common setting since middle school, involving the same people and times. In this dream life, they are alien scentists living on a moon base, studying the Earth they adore from afar. Alice, fascinated by their story, is swept up in the magic of it all. But when an accident occurs, and feelings are running amok (as should happen in the shoujo manga world), Alice finds herself wrapped up in this "story" far more than she could have ever guessed...

Saki Hiwatari is truly a master of crafting a story and it's characters. Issei is my favorite because I'm in a situation so similar to his, I can truly relate to it. Her characters are so real, and the story is so magical and compelling. It takes some practice remembering all the names (Shion Mokuren Gyokuran Enju Shushuran Hiiragi Shukaido, say THAT 5 times fast!), but it's really easy to get into once you get the hang of it. PLEASE don't let the old school art deter you (PSME is from the 80's, after all...), it's really charming in it's own way, and it improves as Hiwatari-san gets closer to her characters.

For fans of the old OAVs- READ THIS. It has more comedy and more filler, and it actually FINISHES THE STORY!! The 6 OAVs could not possibly convey all that happens in this manga (spanning 20 plus volumes!!). This is a must-read, you heard it straight from the Otaku's mouth.

This is a wonderful collection of humourous stories in the subgenius mythos. From big players such as the Rev. "Stang", to New Wave musician Mark Mothersbaugh (from DEVO), many authors have attempted to caputre the essence of SLACK provided by JHVH1 through his Earthly minion, BOB! Get your 'Frop here! (Watch out for the Stark Fist of Removal. Slack be Eternal!)

I really enjoyed reading this book. Cary Grant might be very complex and
difficult person to live with.Yet he is gentle and kind.That is enough.I
simply feel sorry that Maureen Donaldson didn't marry him.She Couldn't

I give this book 5 stars because there are not too many books that keep me awake at night. Usually even a good book puts me to sleep sooner or later. Not this one.

Maureen Donaldson had a four year relationship with legendary Hollywood actor Cary Grant from 1973-1977 after he had retired from film making. Her descriptions of meeting and first getting to know Grant made me feel like I was almost experiencing it with her. I could definitely identify with her feelings of awe and being overwhelmed that Cary Grant was interested in her. I would have felt the same way. As she got to know him and spend more time with him, she saw that he was only human (aren't we all). In fact, he was very human, with many of the same fears, insecurities and childhood hurts that so many of us have to deal with ourselves.

I agree with other reviewers who feel this book is not a trash Cary Grant book. I don't think that was her intention. I don't think less of Grant now than before I read the book. From everything I have read about Grant in this book and elsewhere, it seems he had a very rock-solid core to him. He comes across as a very loyal friend, surprisingly generous at times (when the mood struck him), tender-hearted and kind.

Maureen tells in her book how Grant read a daily devotional each day of the year out of a Christian booklet he had a subscription to. After they broke up Maureen said she continued the practice of reading those daily selections herself.

She took Grant to an Alice Cooper concert (with Grant in disguise). He hated it, but the fact that she talked him into going proves to me that he really cared about her. A man his age going to an Alice Cooper concert? That is love.

I do wonder why she wrote this book. I guess I should not try to speculate. According to Maureen, Grant tried to get her to marry him and even enlisted Jennifer Jones and her last husband to offer their home as a wedding site.

Even after reading the whole book I still can't help but think Maureen was nuts not to marry him.

I've just finished reading this and i'm a little shellshocked. Not because I feel Grant has been villified but perhaps merely because it shows such a debonair and enigmatic idol of mine as a true fallible human being.

Like the other reviewer commented, I too thought it seemed to be written with a fair amount of objectivity. It did not come across to me as a bitter and delibrate attempt to trash or undermine Grant. It does come across, however, as a bit of a tacky and harrowing romance novel, even the presentation of the book conveys such an image.

I think if you're a Cary Grant fan that wants to find out a little more about Archie Leach and is willing to accept the fact that their view of Cary may be tarnished in the process; then go ahead and read this, it is an interesting and (from what I can tell) balanced read.

Let's all hope he was happy in the end.

I felt like I knew Cary Grant much better after reading this book. It seems to have been written with some objectivity. The book makes you feel as though you are right in the middle of their relationship. I really enjoyed reading about the details of the most dashing man of the classic movie era. There will never be another Cary Grant, unfortunately.

Beautiful explanation of hand valuation which has helped me atleast attain a thorough grounding of basic bridge principles. It is 2-3 years after reading this book , while playing serious bridge, that one realises the mark it is left.

Not Great, But Not Bad Either!.......2007-03-06

I got this book a few days ago because I wanted to use Studio 8 to design a site. The book has been helpful but no lifesaver. The example you build throughout the book is very simple and much of the book focuses on building the example, but does a poor job of explaining other design options to users. I think the biggest problem is that it tries to do too much in one book. I guess I can't blame the authors, because Studio 8 is quite big. What the book does manage to explain is well done and easy to understand. I don't think you will find a Studio 8 book with everything you need. I recommend you look into buying a different book for each of the applications within Studio 8 (Dreamweaver, Flash, etc)

Intro to Intermediate - Great Book.......2006-03-16

This books covers it. Whatever you are looking for, all of the applications are discussed in detail, their similarities and differences. The Projects are very useful and cover the full range of software.
The only negetive is the fact that you have to download all of the data files. There is no included CD. But that said, this book starts at the basics of all of the applications and moves though their functionality. Then moves to the projects that are carried through from beginning to end.
The language used is not Techie, but lighthearted for lack of a better phrase.
Easy to read and very informative.
Well setup, very easy to use as a reference.

Christian propaganda about the Vikings endures to this day........2004-09-30

'The Nazis adopted Viking imagary therefore the Vikings must be Nazis' - was the person who came up with that howler having a blonde moment at the time?

Apart from that gem, the Vikings:

- Interests' lay more in establishing trade routes rather than looting and pillaging cities.
- Had an intricate and surprisingly sophisticated civilization for their time.
- Were heathens (non-Christians) in a period of time in which the rest of Europe was largely Christianized. This was to change over time; some by peaceful adoption of the new religion, others by torture. Still, much of the negative history of the Norsemen was written by Christian scholars...
- Were strongly family-oriented, believing that their strength came from their heritage and the blood of their ancestors.
- Used an alphabet (called a "futhark") consisting of only 16 letters (a reduction of their ancestors' earlier alphabet of 24 letters.)

To this day, their influences can be felt in the language, arts, and literature of modern-day American culture.

Or are you more comfortable with the 'murderous barbarians' conclusion. If not, buy another book.

Fair.......2003-06-08

This book falls below what I would expect from Oxford (at least the traditional Oxford of yester-year). The pictures are nice as well as a lot of the text. The main problem with this book is the chapter "The Vikings in History and Ledgend." The author of this essay insinuates that those who take pride in their Viking heritage are Nazis. This chapter is full of inappropriate partisan politics and hurts this book. It reads like propoganda straight out of a typical ADL hate tract.
One reader has obviously fallen for this line (see below).
There are far-better books on the Vikings out there. Go for Gwen Jones for a more balanced account.

A comprehensive, intelligent history of the Vikings.......1999-04-07

This is one of the best books on the Vikings I've ever read (and I've read dozens!). With numerous contributors from many universtities, each chapter is written with detailed authority and offers a fresh perspective. The chonology at the back of the book is a bonus feature. My only criticism is that, depspite chapters on exploration to the west (what I consider to be the most important legacy of the Vikings), Sawyer still tends to let the British perspective of victimization by the Vikings dominate the book.

Subtle, difficult and underappreciated ideas.......2004-11-05

Several years ago, the science fiction author Isaac Asimov wrote a short story set in the far future. He depicted a time so advanced that the simplest arithmetic was done by computers, and forgotten by humans. And so it goes here, in Chang's book. He has done us a service by revisiting solved problems that have been solved for so long that their basic importance is no longer appreciated by practising scientists.

Consider your typical undergraduate textbooks that discuss heat and temperature. Very little mention is given about the bootstrapping problem. Without modern instrumentation, how do you define a temperature scale that is consistently reproducible? One might wonder why it took scientists of an earlier age so long to strive over such a simple problem. Were they stupid back then?

Not so. Chang shows that the problem is divided into two closely related parts. One experimental and one conceptual. The former relates to the search for fixed points, like the freezing and boiling points of water. Not as straightforward as it might first seem. And no, it was not the dependence of these on the atmospheric pressure. That was quickly discovered and accomodated. But other phenomenon like the supercooling of liquid water, which can push it below the normal freezing point, were harder to understand.

It turned out that the key conceptual problem is just as serious, if not more so. One runs into a circular pattern of logic. One way out is to follow Euclid's approach by starting with a small set of axioms that everyone accepts, and build from them. Anyway, the core of Chang's book is how this problem was tackled and solved. It took some of the most prominent scientists of the 18th and 19th centuries to tie this down. And that is the merit of this book. Chang helps us appreciate one of the foundations of our science.
